For me i have no issue withy market being down for long, as it helps me to buy quality assets at a cheaper price but Devaluation is a no no for me. I was a big time victim in 2015/16 which saw my networth seriously decimated compared to my colleagues. I was actually full time learner then and unfortunately, i experienced it with my hard earned money instead of learning from others to avoid it. The senior friends and colleagues who were older saw it coming and used it to their advantage. Its so pathethic for some of us, sweating and working very hard to save crumbs to invest in naira assets with the hope of cash flow to pay our bills and other expenses that are funded in forex only to see such investment decimated when you tried to repatriate those funds. I was still lucky compared to an elderly friend in Aberdeen who had a good plan to establish a boutique in every capital of the 36 states and FCT, unfortunately this guy and his family was worst hit with the devaluation during that time, imagine them buying goods at the rate of 200+/GBP only to repatriate the funds back to Uk at the rate of 500+/GBP. They had to start closing down all the boutiques one after the other and worse of it all, the guy lost his lucrative job during that oil crises in Aberdeen. The family was hit both ways, the wife shedding tears and they were both depressed. Since that time, i fear DEVALUATION with every breath in me. Once i hear DE, i jaa without listening to the remaining VALUATION.

You are making a mistake.

You can always beat devaluation when you stay invested in the stock market if you consider dividends + capital appreciation.

The last USD/NGN devaluation was from 157 to 360. This is just 56% depreciation. Stocks have returned higher than this percentage between 2013 and now.

So no dey fear anything. The main thing is to buy low, stick with banks because na Dem go enjoy the devaluation via revaluation gains or petroleum marketing stocks because they must have imported at the current rate before devaluation (and subsequent increase in fuel price).

Oga RabbiDoracle is right. Its 56% depreciation. For example, $2293 into the country in 2013 and exchanged it for 157/$, that will give you 360,001 naira and if you want to repatriate same money today at 360/$, you will get just $1000 which means your $2293 in 2013 is now worth $1000 today. In essence, you lost (2293-1000)/2293 which gives 56% devaluation.

You can't have more 100% loss of a currency. Either it is 100% or 99.999% or lower.

It was in Zimbabwe that they had clear 100% loss where they changed the national currency to USD after a serious devaluation grin. (Awon were)

Even your pounds then only lost 50% (from 250 to 500). Some stocks beat that devaluation hands down! If you compute dividends from 2013 till last year and then add capital appreciation to it, you will see that you even had better gains.

So no dey fear those things. We(You) are (an) engineers. So we try to work around things to find solutions.

That was 2014 when oil price was seriously messed.

This goes to tell you that you should SECURE YOUR FUTURE YOURSELF! Not your employer.

The guy who turned to bouncer did not plan and prepare for that day. He was too relaxed. You started your plans long ago and now you are prepared for any eventualities.

Two weeks to go. If a company sells rights issue at about 150% of market price, and is not aggressively promoting the rights issue, its speaks volumes.
