The issue is not that she us from ur village. Everyone marries from his or her village. The issue is that u were not listening to what ur father was saying. He meant "the girl is from ur blood lineage which is popularly called IKWU. And no one marries his Or her IKWU. It is a taboo, unless it is done unknowingly. Ask ur dad again which IKWU u come from and let him be specific in mentioning it. Inquire from the girl's family if they are the same (note: some people's village ikwu is link to fatther and some are linked to the mother.
Therefore, if ur father tells u and ur ikwu are the same, please kindly leave her but if they are not same, go ahead and marry her. However, if they are not the same and ur father doesn't want u to marry her, inquire more, maybe she could be ur lost step sister.
Thanks
I don't know about that. Just that they said we're siblings since we're from the same village.

I had to open a new account for this, pardon me for Punctuation errors. I have to go straight to the point so as not to bore you... My story goes thus

I'm a young man of 25. I met this very beautiful girl, aged 23 now, we've dated 4 years now. She's so humble, the love grew out of nowhere. She does everything a woman would do for a man and I do everything a man will do for a woman.

I found myself not doing anything without her and she cannot do anything without involving me, we actually love each other very much.

She started pestering me to have a blood oath with her because she was scared I would leave her. I laughed it off cos I knew I wouldn't cheat on her, she is everything I wanted in a woman.

Trouble started when I brought her home to meet my parents, I was actually happy that I had found my wife...

When she left, my father asked me where she was from, and I told him and my father told me I can't marry her because she was from the same village with me and thereby related by blood thereby marrying her is an abomination that she was my sister so to say and said our kinsmen would not be Involved if I insist on marrying her... I felt my world crumbling down like a pack of cards...

I told my girl and she was like, it's an old tradition and nobody will dictate to her who she would marry and she loves me and there was no going back...

As a man, I thought about it and wanted to let her go because I wouldn't want the stigma to be on us and my unborn kids... I showed her some attitude to make her hate me but she didn't, rather she would rather beg me not to leave her even when I'm at fault. I feel bad anytime I do anything to hurt her feelings...

Now, I actually want to get her pregnant and damn the consequences, do a court wedding if the need arises and relocate with her out from our state and start a new life elsewhere...

Another mind is telling me to let her go so we can move on with our lives, or even be a fugitive for her... I however know she will hurt herself if I leave her... I'm very confused about everything, I seriously need help... Why is Igbo tradition this way? I found love with this girl, now everything is about to be stripped away from me, just like that... I seriously need an advice please...

I love this girl so much and she make me happy

Please move this to front page so I can hear from others please...
Op, if your problem is the fear that if you leave her, she may never find a suitor like you, then you got no problem because I am scouting for a second wife, so if she is light skin, averagely tall, has very flat tummy, protruding buttocks and full straight legs, then you can PM for further discussion on this....its straight to marriage, so you can be rest assured that she is in safe hands, as for you the guy, you will always find better looking, better behaved, better packaged ladies whenever you are truly ready to marry.....but you must put things in order first. Respect your tradition, hook me up with her if she meets the above criteria and you will be richly rewarded too angry

Waiting for your PM, and please don't let MrCork see this thread angry angry

IN MY OPINION, YOUR DECISION SHOULD BE SUPREME WHEN IT TURNS TO MARRIAGE AND NOT THE WISH OF YOUR PARENTS. YOU SHOULD OF COURSE BEAR IT IN MIND THAT IF THINGS DO NOT WORK OUT WELL, YOU WILL BE HELD CULPABLE.
YOUR DAD GOT MARRIED TO YOUR MUM BECAUSE HE LIKED HER I ASSUME. SO YOU SHOULD ALSO GET MARRIED TO THE LADY YOU SAY YOU BOTH LOVE EACH OTHER. JUST BEING FROM THE SAME VILLAGE DOESN’T BIOLOGICAL CLASSIFY HER TO BE YOUR SISTER. DID WAS IT YOUR FATHER THAT IMPREGNATED HER MOTHER? DO YOU GUYS SHARE THE SAME GRANDFATHER/GRANDMOTHER? HAS YOUR FATHER IDENTIFIED WHERE YOUR FAMILY LINAGE COINCIDES? IF NO, THEN HE SHOULD GO SIT DOWN AND ATTEND TO HIS WIFE’S AFFECTIVE NEEDS.
THERE ARE SO MANY COUPLES THAT WRONG FAMILY INFLUENCE HAVE SHATTERED. BEFORE THINKING OF THE NEXT STEP OF ACTION, YOU GUYS SHOULD BOTH GO TO THE LABORATORY FOR A HEMOGLOBIN GENOTYPE TEST TO SEE IF YOU ARE COMPACTIBLE. IF YOU ARE BOTH “AS”, THEM FORGET ABOUT LOVE AND FIND YOUR WAY.

YOU FAILED TO TELL US WHAT YOU GUYS DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW YOU PLAN TO RUN THE FAMILY. WHAT IS YOUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION, WHAT ABOUT HERS? WITH THE NIGERIA I THINK I KNOW IT IS VERY UNLIKELY YOU ARE BOTH GRADUATES AND ARE GAINFULLY EMPLOYED. TO IMPREGNATE A FERTILE WOMAN IS NOT OFTEN A BIG DEAL, BUT THEREAFTER HOW WILL YOU RUN THE FAMILY? THINKING OF BUILDING A CAREER RIGHT NOW MAKES MORE SENSE THAN THINKING OF GETTING MARRIED.
IN MY OPINION YOUR DAD’S REASON IS FLIMSY AND SHOULD HINDER YOU WHEN THE TIME FOR SERIOUSNESS COMES.

Dear OP, in this world, everyone is everyone's sibling. We all stemmed from the same root. Do whatever makes you happy, man. But importantly, seek spiritual guidance from God before you proceed. Have a nice life.

At 25yrs is marriage supposed to be ur ultimate ambition in life have u finished ur education or are u successfull in ur business to take good care of ur own family? All these are supposed to be ur major worries besides I will advise you to listen to ur parents am also an Igbo man i come from a village with similar culture it's highly forbiden for us to marry ourselves. A couple based in the US who are both from our village once disobeyed this age long tradition despite all the warnings from his immediate family and elders from our village went on to conduct a church wedding in the US thinking that nothing will happen to them because they are living outside the country but at the end of the day the lady ended up giving birth to a cripple. Don't joke with some African cultures if u are not spiritually strong enough to withstand the backlash they can be very powerful.

Fool at 25. Go and marry your job if you have one cos obviously you ain't matured for marriage yet.
You should do more of flower boys things during wedding to gain more experience.
Nwa mkpi(small he-goat).

Don't be lazy
Make some findings n see if you are truly related and if you not then let your parents know about your findings and how you aren't related.

But don't ever make mistake to marry her outside ur parent consent...

Let me make it clear to you,it is not about the same village, it is about if she is from the same clan/ hamlet... The village geographical mapping may be different... You can have the Same L.G.A, then after that the same autonomous community then the same village, then the same clan $hamlet/family please try and confirm you can get married from the same village but not the same village with the same family, clan, hamlet ..because it is believed you guys have a common father.
And please don't go and do your own to avoid unnecessary spiritual problems...

Hey, you don't entirely understand what the op implies with his write up. That same tradition exist in my village and its not as if all of us in the village/quarter's are related. When I asked my grandmum she said our fore forefathers that's more than 1000yrs ago settled in that village as siblings and they keep procreating, so we're all related in one way or the other.
@op, if you ask me. I feel the tradition is thrash. If you know you're successful, a Christian and you are sure you won't need the help(in terms of politics, investment and other needs that may arise in the future) of your village people or community for anything in life or better still you are planning to leave Nigeria for good. Then you can go ahead and marry the girl.

What's the parents of the girl saying?
Oga I will support him to marry the girl if it's because of the Igbo caste system and shii. But this is totally different issue. It has to do with genetics and blood relationship. Moreover we don't know if the OP village are settlers just like yours or they are really siblings.

PS no town in Nigeria is a thousand years old. Whatever your granny told you is a lie

Somehow? How? Ask questions.. And seek the face of God.

He was the first guy to buy Toyota Fj cruiser in orlu market and later bought Honda Element. Now everything is gone.He is a mad man now because he committed an abomination by marrying a girl that is related to him by blood.i feel pained because this guy paid my flight ticket when I traveled to Spain in 1997,but there is no way I can help because the crase don enter market level. So for your own good, leave that girl and look for another wife to marry.after all there are so many fishes in the river.if you fail to listen to your parents and marry that girl, your own don finish be dat.

How do you know it was the marriage that made him run mad?

If the only relationship is that you come from the same village (ie you are not related by blood like cousins etc), go meet some elders in your village and find out if there is a way out.
In some Igbo villages, some rituals are performed to allow the marriage to happen.
Also, in most Igbo villages, the restriction only applies to some parts of the village. You are allowed to marry from other parts of the same village. Ask around to be sure.
As for the blood covenant, it's a sign of immaturity on the part of your girlfriend. Don't do it.

Be open minded. Damming all consequences is not the first option, do a thorough research on how much related you are. Love is overrated, marriage is overrated, as a matter of fact love is not what keeps marriage after 10years. It is responsibility and you would like to be responsible in making a decision that generates into marriage. The safety and sanity of the lady is very important as well should breakup be an eventuality. Get her totally involve in tracing your lineage, it may be because of your blood relationship that you are drawn to each other in the first place. Get educated, less emotional, let her snap out of it and assist her in settling down again but not at the expense of your dreams. Believe me, I was in your shoes 22yrs ago. I am happy but she does not talk to me again; that I can live with since she is happily married also.

in this situation, you're told that she's literally your own sister. Where on Earth is incest okay. This is what happens when family don't communicate and tell their kids where their root starts and ends. If you like, pregnant her, she will still be your sister and it's not changing the fact that you can't marry her

She is obviously not his sister, unless your definition of sister is different from what is in the dictionary.

When they tell Youths of this generation to know their root, Cultures and traditions they will insult you and call you archaic/ancient. My Dear incest is NEVER accepted anywhere even in the Bible. Trust me you won’t be able to handle the consequences. If truly you both are related by blood, don’t go ahead with that plan of yours because it will backfire.

People on this NL who doesn’t understand how related you both are or what your traditions are will tell you to damn the tradition and marry her. Remember they won’t be there tomorrow to bear the consequences with you. They have their sacred traditions they respect and uphold but will quickly thrash yours just to sound woke undecided

There’s a huge difference between CIVILIZATION and TRADITIONS. Some cultures and traditions are still powerful no matter how civilized or how religious the World is. Listen to the WORDS OF WISDOM, Listen to the WORDS OF THE ELDERS
There is no doubt you are very intelligent but you obviously don't know what civilisation means. It is not, as many erroneously think, a slavish acceptance of western culture and a concomitant repulsion for your culture.

I've read the post more than twice now and I'm still wondering where some persons got the idea it's an Ibo tradition.

To OP, I wouldn't advise you to disobey your parents neither would I tell you to leave the woman that you love. I only ask you to seek counsel else where. Truth is we don't have enough facts to advise you properly and so u are not misled, go else where. You have elders or senior uncles in your village, Right? Talk to them, tallk to a man of God too

PS: Your woman is too forward if u ask me. Imagine the guts asking you for an oath also boldly telling you no one can stop her from getting married to u. Forgive me but I find that awkward

If what the holy book says is anything to go by, then it’s safe to say that we’re all related. After all, we come from Abraham’s long line.

I also understand that different people have different cultures, some of which are not only silly but bizarre and seemingly crafted to ruin lives.

But I also realize that as Africans we hold tenaciously to our beliefs no matter how self-destructive they may be.

The Greeks and romans married their own blood siblings so their progeny would be pure-blood and the heavens didn’t fall.

In any case, I suppose you know what you want to do but you’re probably looking for some measure of validation.

Whatever you do, don’t make your decisions in anger, spite, hate or love for that matter. I find decisions made in that state of mind aren’t always in anyone’s self interest.

Shallom!
