COVID-19: FG Deploys Nigerian Researchers To Search For Cure by Islie(op): 7:29am On Mar 26, 2020

The federal government has deployed Nigerian science researchers to search for cure for COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking exclusively with THISDAY, the Director General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu said three federal government agencies are working hard to contribute to scientific knowledge and solutions for COVID-19.

The three agencies are the Nigerian Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), and the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Chikwe said: “Nigeria’s research agencies have announced that they are working hard, to contribute to scientific knowledge and solutions for COVID-19.”

He said on the international scene, the global community was also working very hard to identify treatment for the disease.

He said: “The World Health Organisation (WHO) is leading the efforts on clinical trials in some countries. This will enable us validate the safety and efficacy of drugs for COVID-19.

“There have been early promising results and we look forward to final validation. In addition, clinical trials began March 17 for a potential vaccine. This effort is coordinated by THE Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI) which is one of our close partners at NCDC.

“We are involved in these discussions, especially to ensure equitable access when solutions such as vaccines and drugs for treatment are available,” he added.

This sounds funny to me. Not like I mean to insult any body o, but I think it's better the FG disburse some of the money intended for this to buying Ventilators and hand sanitizers and PPE.

Then the balance should be saved carefully to import the Covid-19 virus vaccines when serious minded people eventually gets them ready.

While the Nigerian Institute of one thing one thing should kindly go back to its usually Hybernation. In fact they should all self isolate.

Science research field in Nigeria is dead.

Only 3 organizations to call upon? Can you imagine the mediocrity in a population of over 180 million

Instead of pouring millions of Naira to establish more science and technology innovation centers, we spend more on churches, mosques, electorals...

Anyways this is the country I find myself in, I will just try to survive and move to a developed nation or make it here.

Don't expect much from these institutions,since their inception what have they developed or produced?

Let me just be watching my CNN and BBC because that's where I get to see ppl behavior in the epicenter and rightfully replicate it.

If our dumb ašš FG is smart, we should be placed on lock down ASAP! I mean are we not seeing what's happening in NYC atm?

Heaven help those who help themselves.

joke of the century, we barely have 3 testing facility in the whole country and they have being giving conflicting test results, we have just 500 ventilators and they are being moved to Abuja, what exactly would a scientist do in a country decades behind in technology
