The Federal Ministry of Education has presented to the National Assembly a detailed proposal on its plan to reopen schools across the country.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, stated this on Tuesday when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education.

He was in the upper chamber to brief the federal lawmakers about his ministry’s plans for pupils who had been forced to stay at home following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nwajiuba refused to give details of the proposal, saying some people would misconstrue it as the ministry’s guidelines for schools reopening.

He said, “Children are asymptomatic carriers. Nobody can prove whether they can infect each others. Not even the health experts. Everything we know about it is what we read. There is nothing we discovered on our own.

“In the document we have provided, we have suggested how we can move our education sector forward in this pandemic period.

“We don’t want to make it (proposal) known at this period so that some people will not take our proposal for the guidelines for schools reopening.

“The documents were presented to you so that you can criticise and make inputs as major stakeholders”

The Minister, however, expressed concern over the decision of the Oyo State Government to reopen its primary and secondary schools despite the current rising cases of coronavirus infection in the state.

He said, “Why is Oyo State talking of reopening schools when it has just started recording an increase in cases of coronavirus infection?

“Just beside Oyo is Ogun State which was part of the three states under the FG’s lockdown since April and it’s not talking about schools reopening.

“As we speak, Kogi and Cross River states are not on the same page with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on the issue of testing while all their neighbouring states are conducting tests.”

The vice-chairman of the panel, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, who presided over the meeting, expressed the fears that the academic calendar could be distorted in public schools where no visible arrangement was being made to teach the children at home unlike their counterparts in private schools.

These people should stop pretending, are they saying that they are not aware that schools(private school) teachers have been conducting lessons for students and pupils in their compounds and even in school environment? The only difference is that the kids wear muftis.

Let them reopen schools cuz there's no difference if they're closed or open. If you can ease lockdown, why not extend it to the educational sector?

If the testing results and rate is what'll determine if schools will be reopened, then we seriously wasting our time.
Nigeria and the world at large have proven to be unable to curb the virus. What's the point of putting everything on hold and watch the state die.

All they can do is to enforce guidelines /requirements to minimize the risk of being infected.

Funny thing is many have contracted the virus and recovered unknowingly. I'm sure of this.

I seriously don't know what Kogi and Cross Rivers state are feeling like. I hope they know what they're doing sha.. as for reopening of school, it won't be feasible with the ban of interstate travel. If only the could ease that then this could be futile and tantamount to jumping the gun undecided cool

What if any teacher who is infected too passes it on to other teachers, do we want to start losing teachers to this virus? Are these people really thinking properly sef...how can parents afford school bills at the moment, no palliatives to keep their belly running sef, If the government wants to open school then they should be ready to sort bills as well but I'm very sure no parents is ready to lose their children at all..some places in Germany who reopened recently are currently going on total lockdown again due to re-infection...let parents take up the responsibility of studying with their kids for now till the Virus is under our feet...no need for the rush, lives are at risk

People saying school should not reopen should understand this. Everyone is exposed to this virus. Already the economy is opened. Markets are opened jam packed like ever without not much people taking cognizance of the coronaviru. But you sit there claiming you don't want your children to contract the virus, when actually you go to the market, move in public with the possibility of contracting the virus and infecting the same kids at home. I see no difference between this and their kids been in school.

I believe primary school and early secondary school teachers have more works to do. Aside face mask, there's need for them to conduct their wards in such a way that at least guidelines are followed to some extent. The very fact that oyinbo people that we are waiting for are still scrambling to get vaccine for themselves shows it's going to take long before any vaccine gets to us. Maybe late next year sef.. And this means we need to device our own way to survive and live life with the virus.

Schools needs to get opened now.

Rubber stamp Senate please accept it biko cos it's not easy for Private teachers.
The virus isn't going anytime sooner according to NCDC so we must learn to adopt measures such as PPE, hand sanitizers and washing of hands which will help curtail the spread of the audio virus
