If it is in Igboland, from what I saw and what I observed Kingship does not have ancestral linkage to gods of the community. The fact that the throne is rotated between two villages buttresses my earlier observation. Naturally, Deity can choose anybody irrespective of age or position in the linage. If it were in Yoruba land, Edo State, Benin Republic and most part of black Africa, I can never advice you to reject it because the repercussions are beyond explanation. If your wife knows the effect of rejecting it, she will look for wife for you. If you know the effect, you will never wish your enemy the effect.
