how do you know if a name has been backordered?

I check namejet, dropcatch and snapnames for a name and it showed 0 bids but when it supposed to be available on ED it showed "caught domain". I didn't see any bids.

You won't know until after the name drops. To be in safer side, you can backorder the name and if you're the only one interested in the name, you'll win it but if not, it'll goto Auctions.

Possible. Once someone keeps hitting the "register" button for a domain every 45 secs , if the name actually drops, the person has a good chance of getting it and it will show "Caught" on ED. I have "caught" more than 3 domains without backordering.

EDIT : There's also dynadot and SAV dropcatch.
