Former IGP advises against banning SARS

A former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has advised against the ban of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mohammed Adamu on October 4 banned the personnel of the FSARS and other tactical squads of the force from routine patrols.

Other tactical squads affected by the ban include the Special Tactical Squad, Intelligence Response Team , Anti-Cultism Squad and other tactical squads operating at the federal, zonal and command levels were banned from carrying out routine patrols and other conventional low-risk duties notably stop and search duties, checkpoints, mounting of roadblocks, traffic checks among others.

Mr Okiro, who gave the advice in an interview with NAN on Thursday in Abuja, said that the squad should be rebranded and refocused for effective service delivery.

“The police management should go to the drawing board and retrain personnel of the SARS as it will be counter-productive to disband them.

“You cannot throw away the baby with the bathwater, if they have deviated from what they were established for they should be retrained and refocused,“ he said.

“Armed robbers will be happy that there is no more SARS in the country but are Nigerians ready for that?” he said.

He said that the squad had derailed from the primary purpose of tackling armed robbery that it was established for.

“Members of the SARS are doing things that are different from their training, “he said.

He called for stiff punishment for any member of the squad who violates the code of conduct to serve as a deterrent to others.

The former police boss said that it was unfortunate that the squad have now delved into cases of debt recovery and other matters aside armed robbery.

He called for adequate funding of the force for training and retraining of its personnel and to acquire modern equipment for effective service delivery.

Mike go and sleep

We Nigerians will prefer robbers to SARS...

Reasons cos When we see armed robbers we will know they are robbers, than having Police in form of SARS as thieves

The excesses of the bad eggs amongst the men of the SARS must be curbed.

The Nigeria Police itself has to be reformed and repackaged to reflect the modern policing system.

...but I kid you not, some of these cultists and criminals are still very much afraid of SARS.
I wish we don't throw away the baby with the bath water.

Let the government identify the bad cops and punish them accordingly

Okiro could not have said it better. SARS should be restructured and rebranded. Outright banning of the Organization will do more harm than good. Many criminals, robbers especially will have a free day to operate.

Sure this is the reason why I am against the total disbandment of SARS but I believe that they should be reformed. Our Police Force needs a total reform
The government should restructure the police system

Then they should be restricted to armed robbers & kidnappers while efcc remains in charge of cyber criminals. Summarily speaking, leave innocent citizens alone, stop extorting , exploiting & killings us. We say no to sars brutality!!! They are not Very useless people but very useless things.

You won't ask for SARS to be totally dissolved if you think deep enough.
By the time robbers terrorize people, I wonder the hashtags they'll use.

Restructuring is the best that can happen.

Most of the people who want SARZ to be eliminated are either yahoo boys or they benefit small giveaway from them.

I was in Lekki few months ago and I noticed that most of the guys riding flashy cars are into fraud.

Most are even driving cars without plate numbers. All the know is to bill their maga and when he pays they use the money to buy BENZ, Bleep dirty olosho, smoke weed and drink fake Hennessey.

SARS should continue with their good job.

Isaiah 55:6-7 KJV
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord , and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Christ Jesus is coming soon.

Nigeria has the worst set of humans on earth... these same sars will now turn to armed robbers at night( they already look like armed robbers) or set the public up by encouraging their armed robber friends to terrorize the nation so that our hands will b tied ...and will now asked them to come bk to our roads... we are in serious trouble in this country ... how can a fellow man do this to his fellow man
