Good day. I am having serious issues with my car's acceleration. It has been in and out if the mechanics but it seems they don't know what to do. They cleaned and changed the fuel nozzle, etc but it's not solving any of the issues. Just yesterday, it got completely worse, the car went completely off twice while the ignition was still on, once was when I was coming down a bridge. The car misfires, it doesn't accelerate when it is supposed to and sometimes, when I switch on the ignition, it just raises it self without me placing my leg on the throttle. When it does this and I go ahead to drive the car, the brakes stops working. This has put me in danger, and I have resolved not to drive the car anymore till it gets resolved. Please, I need your help, I am based in Lagos.

Chat me up sir

Sign of Steering Rack Failure & Problems

Today cars uses what is called steering rack and pinion setup. It is the system that connects your steering wheel to the front wheels of the car.

We have the belt-driven power-steering pump and an electro-hydraulic pump: the motor pump unit (MPU).

This MPU combines an electric motor, the associated control unit, a gear pump and a compensation tank for the fluid – all in one single housing. By using multiple sensors, the control unit calculates the required steering assistance while taking the driving speed, steering torque and steering speed into consideration before actuating the hydraulic pump accordingly.

Symptoms Of A Bad Steering Rack

Loose steering

Steering wheel shakes

Clunking noise

Wheels don't return to center

Excess slack

Looseness in the steering wheel

Vehicle unstable on highway

I was called for a Lexus IS350, having Overheating issue. The car will run fine with the air conditioning working, but gets hotter in traffic without the AC.

Running scenarios; Driving the car with AC and idling in traffic was smooth with the temperature at 87⁰C but the Fan was not having breaks in between.
But on another scenario of running the car without AC driving was fine but the moment you are stuck in traffic the fan don't pick up until the temperature is at over 97⁰C and once the fan comes on it won't last up to 5 seconds. Which leads to the temperature going over 105⁰C.

After running diagnosis I went ahead to ask the owner question about the history of the overheating, from his narration, from the moment he noticed the issue to the point of contact of B-Automobile Nigeria Limited he has spent more from changing
* Radiator
* Thermostat
* Radiator Cover
* Fan

But from all the changes, the overheating issue was still lingering.
After carefully examining all possible causes from FAN RELAY to ENGINE COOLANT SENSOR to RADIATOR CAP & RADIATOR to THERMOSTAT to WATER PUMP.

I went ahead to run a hot water test on the Thermostat.
And finally we have our answer. The Thermostat that was suppose to open up at a certain temperature was not just doing that.

The issue most car owners neglect. The issue of your car EVAP - Evaporative Emissions Control System.

What Is The Function Of An EVAP?

The EVAP aims to contain any fumes from gasoline, avoiding spillage into the environment.
But the EVAP also keeps potentially dangerous fumes from entering the interior of your vehicle. It can also prevent the combustible fuel from causing a more serious problem in your vehicle’s systems.

Possible Codes Of a Faulty EVAP.

P0442 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected

P0455 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Leak Detected (large)

P0440 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System

P0446 EVAP Vent Solenoid Valve Control System

P0411 EVAP System Control Incorrect Purge Flow

Causes Of EVAP Leakages

● Faulty O-ring seals

● Defective leak detection pumps

● An inoperative purge valve

● A leaking vacuum hose or vent

● Leaks in the EVAP canister

● Breakage or leakage somewhere else in the system

● Gas tank cap

Solution is based on further diagnosis.

Dear all, kindly assist before I run into serious problems.
My car is a corolla 2010 bought toks 2018. All been good good till my ac developed fault in June.
This was in delta state. Electrician replaced the compressor with manual saying automatic isn't reliable, on my way back to lagos the compressor stopped working. I took it to mechanic in lagos who said its knocked. No oil ( oil leaked out) in August we replaced another compressor then the new mechanic advised to replace condenser aswell for good performance. He replaced those 2 and added a sensor from automatic compressor which he claimed was what spoilt the first manual compressor. ac worked well. 3 weeks after going to island ac cut off I called him and he asked I turn it off. I got to his shop he said the new compressor of 3 weeks is bad again plus valve is leaking. Got another compressor and valve ac worked only 3o mins for me to drive home. I turned on ac following day I got hot air. I went back to his place, he said compressor leaked oil claiming its my fan. My fan right from prlurchase doesn't run at full speed always only does that at intervals . Now today he cut 1 of the 3 cables supplying the fan making the fan to run at full speed. This im not comfortable with hence I'm here to seek professional help. I dont know what effect this fan modification can have on the system especially my engine. Please I need all advice I can get plus willing to have someone else take a look at this guys work before I run into serious problems. Please parson my long writeup . Name is jude number 08122649744. Desperately in need

I'm sorry to tell you this but ALL those techs are IDIOTS. your original compressor was likely fine and you probably just had a leak. Unfortunately you now have two choices. Have your compressor returned back to automatic by someone like us which WILL be expensive OR, have someone COMPETENT check for a LEAK and manage the modifications to your ac as is. You may be lucky and it runs forever.

Boss what type of oil are you using?
Is there any sign of oil leakage around your engine or on the floor if parked?

That is a very deep and thick oil that doesn't just dry up.
First check for any signs of Leakages.
Is the car smoking?

Run comprehensive diagnosis first
Re: Mechanic Roundtable by Blackbishop(m): 7:53am On Oct 31, 2020
Honda Accord 2003 was diagnosed of misfiring by mechanics at Oyingbo market, the spark plugs, the coil and noozle was replaced yet no changes.

At a point the customer said they even suggested changing the fuel pump which they did but still no improvement.

B-Automobile was called after all the trials and after running a scan, all the 4 cylinders returned a misfiring code, which gave the idea of not the plugs or coil due to the history of changing all.

Without much talk I knew it was the VVT/VTEC pressure switch Malfunctioning but not throwing up any codes. I remove and replace with a tokunbo and voila the car was back to life.

Before any extensive spending run comprehensive diagnosis.

From my experience we need to work on a particular Solenoid. But if that doesn't work then I will advice to run another brainbox. Sorry for the late response.
Re: Mechanic Roundtable by Blackbishop(m): 2:42pm On Nov 12, 2020
Wow! It's been awhile since I last updated this page.

American Cars like Grand Cherokee Jeep are one hello of a problematic set of cars to be using here in Nigeria.

I had a 2005 Grand Cherokee Jeep at Ibadan which had a MISFIRING problem, after changing Coil pack and plugs and injector noozle still the problem persist.

I was tempted to change the gasket and grind the cylinder head just to eliminate the phases.

Not until the kick started stopped working, in the process of replacing I decided to check the entire wiring of the car and in the process we replace the BRAINBOX just to be sure and viola the car was working fine again.

This is just to educate most car owners if you are using a car that is not under the Japanese and Korea and some selected countries pls before spending a fortune to repair take a time to run all possible scenarios first before going for the complex parts

I was called for 2005 Corolla, not starting at the first attempt in the morning. I did some rough diagnosis and came to conclusion about the Fuel Pressure regulator, went ahead to change and noticed the OCV Solenoid was bad, after changing the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the OCV the car came up once but subsequently it still went back to the old pattern. Not starting at the first trial.

Here am trying to let most car owners who use YouTube very well to understand some basic technical issues here, stop assuming or over ITOOKNOW kills the morale of a Technician.

After all was done and the car went back to the old way, the customer was just angry and started saying some unprintable words that was suppose to make me react, but as a professional you don't react customers are always right, am I right?

I went ahead to check the Coolant Sensor which is been refer to as Cold Start Switch by local mechanics and remove the connector asked him again to start and the car started once and in fraction of a second not like before that it takes up to 3/4 second to start.

As a car owner never assume or believe you know the how. It causes confusion and you can never get a Solution from an angry Technician.

Tappet Noise

A tappet noise refers to the noise made by the Lash or Clearance between the Rocker arm and Valve stem in a car.
It also occurs as a result of the lash or clearance between the valve lifter and valve stem at start up for at least 30 seconds. It normally occurs if oil is not regularly changed or oil pump delay to supply oil.

The Tappet Noise can vary from start to continuous noise. When you start the car in the morning the Tappet Noise can come on for few seconds which makes the issue to be minimal, but when it is continuously giving the sound through out the driving period more attention is needs to avoid permanent damage.

Avoid using thick oil
If the oil is too thick then it will not pass through the tiny holes resulting in an increase in friction. The increased will not only lead to noisy lifters, but it may also increase the temperature a little bit. On the contrary, if the oil is too thin, it won't provide proper lubrication as well as padding.

In this situation we have the lifter as the main cause of the Tappet noise. Which can be fixed. But it is also important to differentiate between a knock sound and a Tappet Noise.

Tappet Noise comes from the top most part of the engine, mostly heard under the Valve cover and increases as the car is revved up.

Google key on key off jeep scan and post the codes.

A jeep can be used in Nigeria, you just have to know how to diagnose and not throw money at mechanics.

Because you can scan a jeep yourself without a scanner, search online for what the code means and there will be a youtube video on how to fix it

That is true but boss not all problems have the video on YouTube. If you doubt search for shift Solenoid for Hyundai Elantra 2007 Replacement. Then you don't advice people to use YouTube, naso Alhaji take burn brainbox thinking he was a super Mario of car issue.
