I love Madonna’s father for not supporting his spoilt brat in a moment like this, since she can’t apologize and move on then she should dance to the trouble and shame she put herself in.

Thanks for the update ma’am

Madonna's case is a case of "when the dog wants to die, it doesn't even allow it perceive shit"

Let he face the wrath, she is too condescending and arrogant. I only pity Nwakama, she might be bad but doesn't deserve to be caught up in a murder case.

Please do something about the Anti spam bot banning authors in this section.

It's annoying.

I know of another author that eventually abandoned his story on this platform after receiving series of bans.

Do you want Rosemary33 to abandon hers too and add to the list of incomplete stories here?

You're a great writer, Madam Rosy.

The few first chapters of your story (before Mezie relocated out of the village) made me flashback and gave me some nostalgic feeling. You know, remembering the late Chinua Achebe's "Arrow of God and Things Fall Apart". That African setting of husbands absolute dominance and wives total submission in marriage. A time when wives dare not look directly at their husbands face when he's talking, especially when he is angry.

I just can't imagine what Akwaugo went through in the hands of Mezie who represented the aforementioned time. But I was elated for the introduction of Morgan, who to me represented civilization/ modernisation. Who through his undiluted love for Akwaugo shows that, a woman's potentials need not be hidden or suppressed, a woman need not hide under the shadows, a woman need not be relegated to the background or be trampled upon in order to make a good wife.

Whereas the former tries to hide her from the public eyes out of jealousy, the latter would go to any length to showcase her to the world.

For Madonna, I hope she pays dearly for her crimes. And for Nwakama (or what's her name again?), she's not worthy to be called a friend.

All in all, you're really good at what you do and I can see you going places, ma. Combining office work, wifely duties/ activities, motherly role and writing, no be moi moi, abeg. Your own multitasking is topnotch, ma. I pray God to continue to strengthen you.

And I want to advise that instead of using Gtbank and other known hotels, why not try manufacture your own imaginary banks and hotels, unless of course, you were paid to advertise their brands.
Just thinking aloud, sha.

God bless.

Chapter 40

“Okay, ma’am. You can now go in, she is ready to see you.”

Akwaugo put down the newspaper she had been leafing through for the past ten minutes she arrived at the police station without Morgan knowing. Not that she needed his permission to move around Lagos, but this particular visit would get him grunting and swearing under his breath.

Two nights ago, they’d had a mild argument about this and she had carefully avoided raising the topic again until this opportunity presented itself.

“I will be going to meet the event planner,” she had lied. Not totally, she had wanted to see the event planner and then visit the station after that.

“She can come here to see you. Why do you want to take the pain of going there?” He’d ask.

“I have to pick things from the store.” Not a lie, but not totally true. She had prayed he wouldn’t suggest sending one of the staff.

“Okay, just call me if anything comes up.”

That was it. And there she was, about to do what could bring the first serious quarrel in her relationship.

The pear-shaped female warder ushered her into the room that had only a wooden table and two chairs- one already occupied by a figure that had her head resting on her crossed arms on top of the table.

“Ten minutes,” The warder instructed.

Akwaugo nodded and swallowed hard. She didn’t think this through, or she wouldn’t have come. With her hand tightened around the handle of her bag, she waited for the figure to stir.

The bundle had her face to the other side of the room. Ignoring her with contempt as she had always done. For a brief second, Akwaugo felt like nothing. A nobody, a child before the city lady that had wanted to take her man at all cost.

Wasn’t that what the other woman wanted? Even from the other end, this woman still had a way of reminding her that she belonged to the trash, Morgan had made a mockery of himself by choosing her as a wife.

She scuffed further inside the room until she was very close to the woman and cleared her throat.

The lady languorously lifted her head, if she was surprised at seeing her, it didn’t show on her strong face. In fact, she regarded her with scorn she couldn’t miss in the crooked curl of her lips.

“Hi.”

Silence.

“Do you mind if I seat?”

The lady leaned back, her arms crossed around her middle, head tilted to the side, observing her with slitted eyes.

Akwaugo dropped her bag on the table, pulled the chair backwards, sat down and smoothened her dressed. The lady’s eyes dropped to her bag, regarding it wryly.

Even in this place, her eyes didn’t lose their flames and her strong jaw still depicted power and control. The lady had left her bag and was regarding her with such coldness that made her shudder.

“I am Akwaugo.”

Silence.

“You are Madonna, right?”

The lady turned her nose up and snorted.

“Morgan told me a lot about you.”

For the first time since she stepped in there, she saw the lady’s eyes widened and her lips curled up in a smile.

“Even while I am away, he still thinks about me.” The lady muttered. “Can’t get over me now, can he? I am the one who brings the spark to his life, he can’t forget.”

A sense of satisfaction writing all over the lady’s face. “Why would he not talk about me, when he has such a bore like you by his side.”
It was her turn to become dumb now. She just sat there like a wet chicken listening to the woman.

“Pity…” the lady clung her tongue and shook her head. “He sent you to me instead of coming by himself, he couldn’t look me in the eyes and tell me to go to hell because I am still stuck in his head.”
She hid her trembling hands on her laps.

“He knows he would go rigid down there if he sets his eyes on me, he always does…” Lips pursed, the woman looked at her patronizingly, “He didn’t tell you how rough we used to have it even with you in the picture, everywhere my darling…everywhere. On his desk, beside the pool, in the car, he made me scream over and over again.”

Akwaugo felt burgeoning anger rose like a storm inside of her. Coming there was definitely a mistake, Morgan was right, this lady was supercilious, unrepentant and vile. She clung to the table, trying to calm the anger that had enveloped her.

“Tell me fine face, does he make you scream with pleasure when does it to you?” The lady asked disconsolately.

The metal door rattled and swung open, she glanced at the warder, pushed her chair back and stood up. Smoothening her dress, she stared hard at the lady who had an annoying supercilious curl to her lips.

“Yes, he makes me scream.” She started, “But better than that, I make him want to bury himself inside me forever. he may have had sex with you, what he does to me is love- sweet lovemaking. Adoring every part of this body, licking and supping like he would die if he doesn’t have it.”

The lady threw her head back and pealed out mocking laughter. Akwaugo calmly observed her, she saw the flash of sadness the lady was trying to suppress, the jealous glint in her eyes…

“You will bore him to death! You think he will want that forever? he will soon get tired and seeks for another game and I will be waiting.”

“I don’t know how you are going to be the one waiting…seeing that you are the one at the ugly side of life now and I am the one standing. Alive. Free. Happy. About to wed a multibillionaire.”

The lady glared at her, she could feel the detest, the seething despise, the dagger of hatred. But she didn’t care.

She had come to reason with the lady, to appeal to her to admit her wrong and plead for forgiveness. That was one of the criteria for pardon- Morgan had insisted. She didn’t want anybody punished, not Nwamaka, nor this venomous lady, but she wasn’t sure now. This lady deserved every punishment due to her crime.

“You are making a big mistake; this city will chew and spew you out like vermin. Morgan will leave you in the cold…you will see.”

“You are wrong Madonna. I am not a chicken that can be chewed and cracked. This city has welcomed me already with open arms, as for Morgan…my Morgan…we had weathered harsher climates together, I am not afraid of the cold and I assure you, he will be there with me.”

Hunched with both hands firmly on the table, she brought her face closer to the lady and whispered, “He may have slept with you, but I have him now, groaning and howling with pleasure every day.”
She saw the lady flinched.

“I came here to see how I can get you out, now I know why even your father abandoned you.”

“I don’t need your help!”

“Good. You are not getting any, child. Until you learn that you cannot always have candy.”

She grabbed her bag. Head up, shoulder high, she sashayed out of the room. Holding the welling bitterness within her until she entered into the car and shut the door.

“He was having it with her all this while.” She murmured. “He said he was waiting to perform the traditional rites, yet he was screwing her!”

She felt the firm grip of anger in her heart.

*
She didn’t get home until later in the night. And he knew better than to ask where she had been and why. His eyes followed her around the room until she disappeared into the bathroom, filled the tub and just sat on the covered toilet seat.

She didn’t know why it should bother her that he had been sleeping with the lady or any other girl for that matter, after all, they weren’t doing it until a few weeks ago, so he definitely wanted to satisfy his sexual urge somewhere.

Yet jealousy ate through her like a cankerworm. He had her, she would have allowed him to make love to her with or without the bride price, she’d begged him for it even and he’d declined.

Wiping her face, she peeled her lingerie and stepped into the already cold tub. She had not been this jealous before, not even when Mezie poked his manhood inside Okoye’s wife’s honeypot.

“Akwam, are you okay?” He pushed his head through the slight gap of the door.
For a brief moment, she wanted to ask him to step into the tub and bath her like he did yesterday, scrubbing her hair and massaging her scalp. Then he would do that thing he does in her carnal of lust, with his fingers and tongue.

“Hmm,” She nodded.

“How did it go with the planner?”

“Okay.”

“How much are we looking at, did she tell you?”

She stared at him. His handsome face, beaming with joy, unaware of the turmoil his little unfaithfulness had caused inside her.

“You have been sleeping with her.” She blurted before she could stop herself.

“What?”

Oh, God! She hadn’t wanted to throw the accusation at him like this.

He stepped fully inside the bathroom, “What did you just say?”

She broke the stare, focusing on somewhere above his shoulders.
“The lady in custody. Madonna. You have been sleeping with her.”
“What nonsense are you talking about?” He gritted.

“I saw her today, she spoke to me with disdain and…and an assurance that I mean nothing to you. She told me everything…your dirty affair with her in the office.”

Why was it so difficult to act strong and not meltdown like a baby? She didn’t want to shed a single tear because of this, but the warm liquid ran down her cheeks before she knew it.

“Get out of that bath before you catch a cold.” He was by her side in few two strides, scooped her out of the tub, set her feet down,
“Here.” He handed a large white towel to her.

He leaned on the wall. Battling with a lot of unspoken words, he watched her keenly until she sat on the closed toilet seat.

“One, you told me you were visiting the event planner, I guess you lied. Two, what the hell where you doing at the police station?”

“Visiting Nwamaka and the other lady.” She said flatly.

“For what? Why?”

She wanted to see how to get them out, now she knew why she was led to go there. She was bound to find out about his little secret one way or the other.

“Now it made sense, why she wanted me dead. You made her believe she has you… I am boring, she said. Did you tell her that?” She stared at him.

“Jesus! Woman! How are you so easy to deceive? All these while you can not trust me when I tell you I have only you?” He clenched his teeth. “How do I keep telling you how much you mean to me and that I will never hurt you, yet you disbelieve me?”

“I want to hear this from you, Nkem. While you asked me to wait till every tradition is settled, were you having it with her?” Would it make any difference? She was here now, in his house, madly in love with him.

“I will say this and God bears me witness; from the day I met you in the village, had you on my bed that early morning, I have never fancied any other woman, none had graced my bed nor any other place. I have not even professed anything to Madonna! I have not slept with her for once in her miserable life!”

He was raising his voice, anger boiled in him.

“I guess you will still choose to believe what you want to believe.”
He walked out. Leaving her sobbing silently in the bathroom.

*
He couldn’t understand. Why was it difficult for her to trust him? Why would she even think he would engage with another lady after he had professed his undying love for her. How bad was she battered that made her believe she wasn’t worth loving and sacrificing for?

He slammed the door leading to the study, flopped himself on the chair and groaned. There is no relationship without trust, yet she didn’t seem to trust him, or would he rather say, she was scared of trusting him?

He smashed his fist into the palm of his hands. “Why?” he gritted. Why would she not understand that she was his ‘forever,” and when he said he loved her, it meant there would be no other?

He didn’t know how long he stayed there when he came out, she was seated on a couch in the sitting room, her head leaned back, her eyes closed. He wanted to walk pass but on second thought, he had to settle this now.

He slipped his fingers into the mass of her natural curls, grabbed a handful and tugged gently. She opened her eyes. bending forward, he brought his mouth to his ears and said.

“I want you in the bedroom now.”

He released her hair and walked out.

A few minutes later, she ambled in. leaning by the door and avoiding his eyes. she was subdued like a small child who had done something naughty and been found out. He tried ignoring the surge of desire threatening to burst out from him, he wasn’t supposed to be thinking of sex when he was supposed to address the issue at hand. But Christ! He was having a hard-on.

“Come and seat beside me.”

She shuffled towards him, sat at the edge of the bed, a little far from where he was. Still huddled in a bathrobe, she fumbled with her fingers. He knew she had nothing underneath and tried to ignore that too.

“What can I do to make you know I will never have anyone beside you?” He started. “It hurts me that you chose to listen to a crazy woman, you believed her lies over what I have been telling you. If I want women, girl, I will have tones of them and wouldn’t hide the facts from you.”

She frowned, rolling one thumb over the other.

“You were not supposed to go there Akwam. You told me you were going to see the planner for god sake!”

“I did go to the planner. I only went to the station when I was through with the planner.”

“And you didn’t tell me? Why?”

“You wouldn’t agree for me to go, I was only trying to help. We could find a better way to help these two ladies instead of leaving them behind bars.” She lowered her gaze. “I was wrong; I am so sorry Nkem. That lady doesn’t need redemption.”

He heaved. “Come here, my love.”

When she moved in into his arms, he pushed the robe aside and stroked her flesh.

“You spoilt a good night for me, you know that?”

“What will I do to make it better?”

She knows what. Oh, and it sure would be good.
