In this Era of NIN, BVN and so on,, and with the amount of stress involved in doing even the simplest of things in Nigeria these days, changing of names on official documents had actually become very difficult.

First of all, you still have to swear affidavit as it used to be in the olden days, and then proceed to get the copy of the Newspaper Publication, and accompany all of these documents with your Marriage Certificate before you can even start to proceed with anything.

This is actually when your real stress starts.

You have to go to the NIN Office to change your surname, then you go to your bank in order to change your surname in the BVN, and then go back to change your surname in all your bank accounts, before going back to change the surname at your place of work.
(You might also have to go to your Network-Providers of your GSM lines in order to change your surname there, and also at FRSC Office in order to change your Surname on your Driving License)
..
After checking the stresses involved in all these, you would decide to continue answering your Maiden name in your official documents without even bothering to add the husband's surname.
You only answer your husband's surname in unofficial places that doesn't require ID-Card or Documented-Identity verifications.

..
Until that time comes when it becomes very very easy to change someone's name at one central source-point, and the change-of-name becomes Officially valid to be used anywhere and everywhere without being questioned, then people can comfortably and conveniently begin to change their names as they wished which still falls within the contents of the Law, and also, married ladies can easily change their surnames Officially to their husbands surnames without adding anything to it.
..
In Summary:
What I am trying to say is that the Nigerian system itself is making the process of Name-Changing very very difficult highly stressful, even for people who are very willing to change their own names due to some crucial important reasons.

The Argument In This Write-up Is Very Valid.
So Please, Stop Blaming The Ladies.
They Are Willing, But The Process Is Stressful.
..
Blame The Crippled System.!!

I am currently facing this problem right now... I have done the affidavit, I have done the news paper publication, I went to nin to do my registration and nin is saying that the bank has to change my name first on my bvn before I use that name unless I use my maiden name. And the bank is saying get the new name from the nin then we change it. Just imagine the fix I am in
Na Waa Ooo.
Why would the NIN demand that the name on the BVN should be changed first?
NIN doesn't require BVN..
Rather, it is BVN that requires NIN.
..
Why is it that our Nigerian system and our Government always making things very difficult for the citizens?
Who did we offend in this country?
NoToPile:
I have walked the walk it took me more than 6 months.

My eye saw wheen, GTB was using me to play ping pong because of BVN change.

First swear affidavit
Newspaper
NIMC - this one took less than a week for the change to be effected paid 1k charges.

After NIMC came out took it to the bank as a valid ID containing the new name, thats where wahala start. BVN change, they frustrated me to the extent that I had to carry my little baby to the
Bank.

Everything is so stressful in this country.
Na Waaa Ooo..!!
Nezzjnr:

Ohhhhh

I went with my International passport as govt issued ID

That change of name is seriously a big issue.... One man went to court to get an Affidavit... They told him to go back to Newspaper company get a name publication... He did so... He came back again to get his name changed... They told him to get a Govt valid ID.... He pleaded with his soul and blood... It fell on deaf ears.. He just threw the whole documents on the Customer care attendant table and left out of annoyance

A well aged man ooo.... It was seriously frustrating
I can relate very well.

OP,

You are right and it would get worse.

We need a central database for name change.

If you get married now, you change your name at the bank you did the BVN and advise other banks, change your name at NIN, Tax office, passport, work/school, voter's card etc.

We copied the West in means of identification, we did not copy their centralized database embarassed

It is because most of the men they are married to are average or poor men.

I haven't seen a woman married to an influential family complaining about the stress of change of name.
