Stop the twists and misrepresentation. Tinubu did not dismantle any barrier. It was the NNPC that went to court to challenge the sale by Mobil to Seplat because they (NNPC) believed they had the first right of refusal as agreed in the JV contract. As a compromise to settle out of court, Mobil agreed and gave additional 10percent to NNPC and sold the remaining 30percent to Seplat (instead of the initial 40percent).
That is what resolved the problem. Tinubu did not do anything special or spectacular. Stop hyping people who have not done anything !

This was a deal that was being foot dragged for more than two years. The former President, NNPCL, SEPLAT, ExxonMobil couldn't reach a deal. They had to drag themselves to court. The case was in court till Tinubu came in, soon as the issue was brought before him, he called together all parties involved. Little wonder, he has been able to successfully dismantle the barriers surrounding the deal. Kudos Mr President.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative on alternative energy source has attracted over $1 billion in Direct Foreign Investments to the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority’s Liberty OGFZ in the last 17 months, the Chief Executive Officer of OGFZA, Bamanga Jada, has said.

Jada disclosed this at a sensitisation programme on CNG infrastructural development at the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zones in Port Harcourt.

This was just as key stakeholders in the transportation, environmental and oil and gas sectors have said the Compressed Natural Gas initiative of President Tinubu is one of the major drivers of industrialization.

Speaking at the sensitisation programme on CNG infrastructural development at the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zones in Port Harcourt, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, said the initiative remained one of the bold reforms of the President.

The sensitisation, tagged ‘Driving Sustainable Transportation: Accelerating CNG Adoption,’ was organised by Portland Gas in collaboration with the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority.

Addressing the stakeholders, the minister said CNG offered a cleaner, cheaper and more sustainable solution for powering vehicles, particularly in the transportation and logistics sectors that underpinned industrial activities.

Represented by a director in the ministry, Theresa Ogolo, Oduwole, said the event marked a significant milestone in the nation’s collective effort to drive sustainable transportation and transition to cleaner and more efficient energy systems.

The minister stated, “The adoption of CNG as a viable alternative fuel aligns with the Federal Government’s broader energy transition strategy. This strategy seeks to diversify our energy mix, reduce carbon emissions, and harness the economic potential of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves.

“Our presence here today, at Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone is deliberate and strategic. As a hub for innovation, investment, and industrial activity, Onne is ideally positioned to serve as a launching pad for this initiative.”

She said by developing CNG infrastructure within the zone, the government was setting the stage for widespread adoption across Nigeria and supporting a future where industries and transportation systems thrived sustainably.

Ogolo further said the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment is fully committed to fostering partnerships with stakeholders across the public and private sectors.

She added, “As witnessed today, the strategic collaboration between Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority and Portland Gas Limited on CNG adoption and development project is an initiative to promote the use of CNG as an alternative cleaner and cheaper energy source tailored towards contributing to the current administration’s transformative agenda.”

She said to achieve the transformative initiative; emphasis must be placed on engaging stakeholders in a robust and strategic sensitization and capacity building on CNG adoption.

She said transport operators, industrial players and end-users must be educated about the economic and environmental benefits of adopting CNG, adding that public awareness, policy alignment and coordinated implementation would ensure a seamless and inclusive transition.

She promised that the Federal Government would continue to provide enabling policies, regulatory support and investment incentives to accelerate CNG adoption.

The Programme Director/Chief Executive, Pi-CNG, Michael Oluwagbemi, appraised the impact of the initiative on the economy, describing gas as the fuel for industrialization.

He said, “Today we are changing the tide through President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

He added that the initiative had so far attracted $459 million.

Oluwagbemi said before the initiative, there were only seven conversion centres in five states, but that the number increased to 153 centres across 23 states.

The Managing Director of Portland Gas Limited, Folajimi Mohammed, commended President Tinubu for driving the initiative, adding that the Federal Government had demonstrated willingness to subsidise the cost.

He said, “In terms of subsidising the cost, the Federal Government has identified a few people who they have given the free kits already, so they will make sure the conversions are free of charge.

“We know that the CNG conversation is pretty expensive, but through the Ministry of Finance Incorporated, under the Credit Course Scheme, there is a fund called CALM, which is for automatic conversation, light and solar system.”

Henceforth, he said, the Onne Oil and Gas Zone would operate the conversation centre to accelerate CNG adoption for trucks and cars within the zone.

He enthused further, “The drive for conversation to CNG has been very aggressive by the present administration. The drive has been spreading very fast. As of today, we are not having issues of conversation, but refilling, which we believe that the adoption has been very high.”

On private sector partnership, he said, “Very soon, private stakeholders would be tackling the issue of refilling and is going on very well. If you qualify for that scheme they will give you the funds, almost like a form of a loan, over the time you will pay back.”

He asked the people not to be doubtful about CNG, saying that the initiative had come to stay.

He said already, Portland has opened about seven stations across Lagos, and Abuja and is currently in Onne to accelerate the process.

In his welcome address, the Managing Director/CEO of the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority, Bamanga Jada, commended Tinubu for his bold and crucial reforms into various sectors of the economy.

Jada said, “One of His Excellency’s many reform policies, is the Presidential CNG Initiative, an innovative and far-sighted programme introduced by Mr. President as a component of his palliative intervention to provide cheaper and cleaner fuelling alternative that will significantly lower the energy cost in the country.”

Jada said the free zone authority remained committed to driving and facilitating investments that aligned with Mr President’s objectives for industrial growth and economic diversification.

He said, “In this regard, we have specifically designated two of our Free Zones at Liberty Oil and Gas Free Zone, Akwa Ibom State, and the Orashi Energy Free Zone in Imo State for gas and green energy projects, with a special focus on gas processing and renewable energy resource development projects.

“In the last 17 months under the Tinubu-led administration, OGFZA’s Liberty OGFZ has attracted FDI worth over USD$1 billion.

“More importantly, today’s event reflects the growing confidence that President Bola Tinubu’s Reform Agenda is receiving from both domestic and foreign investors alike, and showcases the diligent role that our Honourable Minister is playing in advancing Mr. President’s mandates, especially in promoting the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas as a cleaner, efficient and more environmentally friendly energy source.”

He said Nigeria is acknowledged as Africa’s largest natural gas producer, with over 209 trillion cubic feet of proven natural reserves.

He added, “In recent years, the global energy landscape has undergone tremendous change. Faced with the dual challenges of increasing energy demand and urgent environmental concerns, we must seek solutions that are both efficient and sustainable.

“CNG stands at the forefront of this endeavour. It is a cleaner, more efficient alternative to conventional fossil fuels, and today, we take a significant step toward embracing its potential.”

Two harbour cranes, described as the largest ever in Nigeria, have arrived Onne Port near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South-South Nigeria[b].

[b]The two cranes from Germany have already been deployed for duty, with port community excited that the biggest ships can now call at Onne in Nigeria and that the economy would gain much from expanded operations at the ports. The expectation is that the turn-around time of ships would come down with these monstrous cranes, according to port operators at Onne.

The feat was achieved by the Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT), subsidiary of Internation al Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI, just commissioned the two new mobile harbour cranes at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) in Onne Port.

OMT also unveiled their $25m state-of-the-art container freight station to offer what they called value-adding services for importers and exporters.

Each of the harbour cranes has capacity to deliver 25 teus of containers per hour and an outreach of 20 containers across. These mobile harbour cranes said to be the biggest ever deployed in a Nigerian port will set a new standard by allowing larger vessels than ever to call Nigerian ports.

Speaking during the commissioning at the quay area of OMT Terminal at FOT, the Managing Director of NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, who was represented by Onne Port Manager, Abdulrahmon Hussain, applauded OMT for the investments.

Dantsoho has been touring ports in Nigeria urging operators to increase their investments and hitech as he said Nigeria braves to join global competitiveness starting from the neighbourhood (West Africa).

The MD said that in recent years OMT has gone from strength to strength and has shown its commitment to Nigeria’s economy.

He stated unequivocally: “This is a big victory for the company, for the NPA, and for the Nigerian economy. You see what OMT has done. The two harbour cranes will bring in more businesses to the country, more revenue to the FG, and to the investors as well as to others”.

He reiterated the dogged determination of OMT to continue investing in state-of-the-art equipment as well as to ensure ‘ease of business’, saying this is in line with the policy drive and vision of the present leadership of the NPA.

Dantsoho had visited the port the previous day and inspected the OMT location where he had emphasised continuous port investments to enhance smooth operations of the port and boost FG revenue.

The Onne Port Manager (Abdulrahmon Hussain) still speaking for the NPA MD, spoke of the need for collaboration between investors, government agencies, importers, agents and other stakeholders or agencies. “I want to thank OMT management again for this bold step in increasing your investment capacity in the Maritime/Blue Economy”.

He said with this kind of investment, if emulated by other operators, that Nigeria’s economy would boom and become a maritime hub in the Sub – African region.

Earlier, the Managing Director of Onne Multi Purpose Terminal, Jacob Gulmann, said the introduction of the new cranes for OMT operations is a major milestone: “These cranes are the biggest mobile harbour cranes operating across Nigerian ports and they will allow our customers (MSC and PIL) to bring in the largest vessels to call Nigeria”.

Gulmann commended the NPA for what he called its pro-active character and strong leadership in laying the foundation for the takeoff of Nigeria’s Blue Economy. He equally hailed the role of Nigeria’s Customs Service, the drug law enforcement agency (NDLEA), Customs agents, importers, the communities and other stakeholders for their contributions to the shipping industry.

He particularly commended OMT shipping line customers (MSC, PIL) and Nigeria’s end-customers (the importers and exporters) and agents for their show of support and patronage. “Without you, none of us would be in business. So, we wish to say a big thank you to all of you”.

In their separate speeches, Mike Ebeatu, chairman, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Onne Sea Port Chapter, picked out OMT for commendations for its continuous investments: “The right equipment will improve vessel dwell time and check-mate demurrage”, Ebeatu stated.

Chief Commercial Officer for Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Udi Goldberg, and Chief Commercial Officer for Pacific International Lines (PIL), Olawunmi Akinyemi, both complimented OMT on the large-scale investments in equipment and warehousing which they see as another indicator of ICTSI commitment to their customers.

C. C Nwokorie, Custom D/C, Admin, who represented Customs Area 11 Controller, Onne Seaport, Mohammed Babandede, said Customs were happy with OMT for procuring the two additional harbour cranes. “We are not surprised. What we are seeing here today is an organization (OMT) that decided to be serious in investing in what they believe in and are committed to address operational challenges. You did it, not only for your benefit, but for the benefit of all Nigerians “, he stated.

In an interview with Odigbo Blais Chigozie, CEO of Great Focus, he congratulated OMT on their two additional acquired Harbour Cranes.

The high point of the event was cutting of tape for the commissioning of the two harbour cranes at OMT terminal, FOT, ONNE Port by the representative of the NPA MD flagged by other dignitaries.

Also, the warehouse built and completed for stacking and storing of materials by OMT was commissioned by Customs Area 11 Controller, Mohammed Babandede (represented by D/C Admin, C. C Nwokorie.)

Among dignitaries that attended the historic event include Ports Authority Police DPO at Onne Port, prominent Bonded Warehouse chief executives such as Kingso and Godify

The Chairman of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Alhaji Hassan Aliyu Bena has said that Kebbi South under Zuru Emirate hitherto ravaged by bandits is now safe for farming.

According to him, contrary to some reports by certain security outfits in the state that at least 36 persons were kidnapped, the truth of the matter some group of women on their way to farm were blocked by bandits in attempt to kidnap them but some of them ran to meet security agencies who chased them away and rescued the trapped women.

“The attack was light not as reported. Our people have since returned to their farms and witnessed bumper harvest this year like never before”.

He said farmers now go to farm even at night because peace has returned to the area courtesy of Kebbi governor’s efforts through mass deployments of security personnel and adequate logistics.

“So we commend the governor for his commitment to ending banditry in Bena villages and other places in Kebbi State”.
