According to military sources who spoke with SaharaReporters, the Nigerian Army has dismissed six soldiers for allegedly fleeing during a Boko Haram attack.

The soldiers attached to the counterinsurgency operation in the North-East, known as Operation Lafiya Dole were said to have fled from the scene of a Boko Haram attack around Damboa, a community in Borno State during the month.

One of the sources added that over 10 soldiers were killed during the attack.

However, the Nigerian Army is yet to confirm the attack or acknowledge own casualties.

The source who spoke to SaharaReporters said the six soldiers were dismissed for withdrawing from the war front

Those affected are 19NA/78/0690 PTE OLANIYI EMMANUEL, 20NA/79/3745 PTE MASA'UDU ADAMU, 22NA/82/5192 PTE ABDUL AZEE SALEH, 22NA/82/ 1721 PTE MOHAMMED MOHAMMED, 22NA/82/1191 PTE ADAH TOYE and 22NA/82/1909 PTE HASSAN ABUBAKAR.

The source, however, described the punishment meted out on his colleagues as not right, arguing that they left the battlefield after running out of ammunition during the fight with the terrorists.

According to the source, sufficient arms and ammunition were not provided for them to fight Boko Haram terrorists; therefore, they soon ran out of ammunition.

Nigerian soldiers on the battle field often complain about being under equipped to face Boko Haram insurgents.

He also blamed the death of those killed on poor firepower and inadequate equipment to combat the insurgents.

“Boko Haram successfully infiltrated into our location during the month and caused KIA and WIA. So some of our colleagues fled during the battle and were all charged and dismissed for not retaliating,” he added.

Naja’atu Salisu, a 300-level Computer Science student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi passes away after being found unconscious in the bathroom on Friday morning, July 26.

Naja’atu had gone to the bathroom in the female hostel at the university’s Gubi campus to take a morning shower and prepare for lectures but was later discovered lying unconscious on the bathroom floor.

One of her roommates told Leadership, “She had completed her usual morning routine and had laid out the clothes she planned to wear to class before going into the bathroom.”

ATBU Spokesperson, Zailani Bappa, confirmed the incident, stating that Naja’atu was rushed to the university’s clinic for medical attention, but the medical personnel could not find a vein.

“She was then taken to the Trauma Centre of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical doctors,” he said.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, has asked all groups planning to participate in the proposed nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states.

He spoke while addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday.

He said this was to ensure the protest was peaceful.

Egbetokun said, “We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest.

“However, in the interest of public safety and order, we urge all groups planning to protest to provide necessary details to the Commissioner of Police in the state where the protest is intended to take place.

“To facilitate a successful and incident-free protest, they should please provide the following information: state the proposed protest routes and assembly points; expected duration of the protest; and names and contact details of protest leaders and organisers.”

The IG added that the information expected from the organisers also include measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements, as well as key identifiers for possible isolation of potential troublemakers.

He added that by providing the information, the police will be able to deploy adequate personnel and resources to ensure public safety.

He also said the police needed to know the specific routes and areas for the protest to avoid conflicts with other events or activities.

Other guidelines, as issued by Egbetokun, are, “Establish clear communication channels with protest leaders to address any concerns or issues that may arise; minimise the risk of violence, property damage, or other criminal activity.

“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly to guarantee a safe and successful exercise of their rights.”

The leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN has begged Nigerians not to go on hunger protest slated for August 1.

Instead, CAN urged the citizens to give President Bola Tinubu more time.

The association, who said it was not oblivious with the pain, anger and frustration that many Nigerians are experiencing, asked the citizens to explore other means of voicing their discontent.

The religious group made their position known in a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Friday.

While it acknowledged that peaceful protest is a constitutional right of citizens, CAN said experience has shown that the planned protest could be hijacked by hoodlums.

The statement reads, “As we navigate this period of crisis, it is imperative to uphold the constitutional rights of every Nigerian to peacefully protest and express their grievances.

“The right to assemble and voice discontent is a cornerstone of our democracy and must be protected and respected by all.

“Peaceful protests are a powerful tool for civic engagement, allowing the populace to communicate their concerns and hold leaders accountable. However, the anxiety related to the impending protests is heightening, especially given the volatile experiences in countries like Kenya and Pakistan.

“We must also draw from our recent history. The #ENDSARS and #RevolutionNow protests, though rooted in genuine grievances, were marred by tragic incidents where miscreants hijacked the process.

“This led to widespread looting, destruction of properties, and unfortunate loss of lives. These experiences have shown us that mass demonstrations can quickly degenerate into chaos if not properly managed and coordinated.

“In light of the planned protests scheduled to commence on 1st of August, CAN urges all Nigerians to consider alternative means of expressing their grievances.

“We recommend giving the government more time to address these pressing concerns. This period should be used to explore other legal avenues that will not easily give hoodlums the opportunity to hijack the exercise to destroy our national assets or endanger lives and properties.

“Dialogue, petitions, and town hall meetings are viable options that can yield positive results without the risk of disorder.

“We call on the government to cut the cost of governance and expedite its efforts to alleviate the hardships in the land. The opulent lifestyle of political office holders must be addressed to demonstrate the sincerity of those in government to improve the living conditions of the people.

“Likewise, it is imperative that the government implements the newly approved national minimum wage to provide immediate relief to struggling families.

“Furthermore, specific measures must be taken to put an end to kidnappings, banditry, and mass killings that have plagued various parts of our country. The security and well-being of every Nigerian should be paramount, and urgent action is required to restore peace and order.

“We also call on the government to expedite its efforts to alleviate the hardships in the land. There is an urgent need for more refined and effective policies that address the root causes of the economic challenges we face.

“The government must deepen its consultations with stakeholders, including religious leaders, to create a more inclusive and comprehensive approach to problem-solving. By working together, we can devise sustainable solutions that reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.

The website created by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to accept job applications from Nigerians crashed on Friday due to unprecedented traffic.

The national oil company confirmed the outage in a statement on its social media platforms.

Daily Sun can report that this occurred hours after NNPCL announced it was accepting applications to fill existing vacancies in the organisation.

This newspaper further reports that the recruitment exercise became a trending topic on social media platforms, shortly after the announcement.

However, the NNPCL said, “Due to unprecedented traffic to the NNPC Ltd. career page from applicants applying for vacancies, the site is currently experiencing slow load times.”

“Our technicians are working diligently to rectify the problem as quickly as possible.

The Amnesty International, AI, has issued a warning to the Nigerian government.

It warned President Bola Tinubu’s administration against threatening Nigerians planning to protest against the current hardship and hunger in the country.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has allegedly spent N150 billion to buy a luxury Airbus A330 aircraft for presidential use.

Recall that recently the House of Representatives’ Committee on National Security and Intelligence recommended procuring new aircraft for the President and Vice President Kashim Shettima due to high maintenance costs and operational issues with the current fleet.

In particular, it recommended that a new aircraft be acquired for the president that would reflect the country’s prominent position in West Africa, Africa, and globally. Additionally, it proposed obtaining a new aircraft similar to the US Vice President’s Air Force Two jet.

In a report following an investigative hearing on May 20 into the state of the PAF, the committee highlighted that several aircraft in the presidential fleet are unserviceable and ageing, leading to increased downtime and operational expenses. The president’s 19-year-old B737-700(BBJ) is in annual maintenance, but the vice president’s 13-year-old Gulfstream Aerospace G550 is in good condition, Premium Times reported.

Apart from those two jets, the presidential fixed-wing fleet also includes a Gulfstream G500, two Falcon 7Xs, a Hawker 4000, and a Challenger 605. Three of the aircraft are reportedly unserviceable. In addition, the PAF’s rotor-wing fleet includes two Agusta 139s (both unusable) and two Agusta 101s, all operated by the Nigerian Air Force (NGR, Lagos) but overseen by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

In April, a government source informed The Nation newspaper that the president had approved the sale of three jets but did not disclose which.

Following this, Premium Times in a report said the government had offered around USD100 million for A330 from an unnamed German bank, valued at USD600 million due to its VIP configuration.

According to Premium Times, the aircraft was repossessed from an unidentified sheikh who had defaulted on a bank loan. Florida-based L & L International LLC and AMAC Aerospace Switzerland AG are reportedly brokering the deal. The Swiss firm has a longstanding aircraft maintenance contract with Nigeria’s Presidential Air Fleet (PAF).

The proposal was widely rejected by some Nigerians who claimed it was insensitive of the government to purchase a new presidential jet when the citizens face severe economic hardship.

Despite the outrage against the proposal for the new presidential jet, a Sahara Reporters report citing Empowered Newswire, said that the aircraft is currently in France and has been spotted at an advanced stage of preparation.

It said the plane has been assigned a tail registration that features the seal of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was reportedly ready for delivery.

The aircraft in question is an ACJ330-200, VP-CAC (msn 1053), registered as 5N-FGA.

It features a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom at the front, followed by an office and a conference and dining room. It also has an airline-style first-class and economy seating at the rear.

It said ch-aviation fleets data shows the 14.86-year-old jet is currently operated by AMAC Corporate Jet (AMK, Zurich) and was being in maintenance in Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg, CH. It was formerly operated by Saudi Arabia’s Mid East Jet (Jeddah International).

The Nigerian government has said the next stage of the recruitment exercise for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Federal Fire Service would begin in August with plans to conclude by the end of September 2024.

This was made known by Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board in a Sunday statement in Abuja

According to him, the recruitment exercise, initially scheduled to end on June 15, 2024, was delayed due to recent manpower audits across several services under the Board.

“The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board wishes to inform the general public that it will commence the next stage of the recruitment exercise in August, and will conclude the exercise before the end of September 2024.”

Ahmed further apologised for the delay in completing the process, noting: “The board wishes to apologise for its inability to complete the process by 15th June 2024, as earlier intended.

“This is due to a nationwide manpower audit exercise carried out in the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Federal Fire Service, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, which was just recently concluded.”

All shortlisted candidates will receive notifications regarding the next stage of the recruitment process through their provided contact details, Ahmed confirmed:

“All shortlisted candidates will be duly notified of the next stage through their phone numbers and email addresses.”

Five persons were reportedly trapped in the rubble of an uncompleted building that collapsed in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.


The tragedy occurred around 8 a.m. on Sunday, throwing residents of the Sabo community into a state of shock as they thronged to the scene to participate in the rescue operation.


An eyewitness, Sani Isyaku, told Vanguard that emergency response officials were joined by residents in the effort to rescue those trapped in the building. He added that some individuals were taken out and rushed in an ambulance to the hospital, while others remained trapped in the debris.

Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, Kehinde Adeleke, said five persons were trapped in the collapsed building.

“Two persons have been rescued while three are still trapped within the building. The team requires the service of a crane to clear the rubble before any further action can be taken.

“While we await the crane, people are doing all they can within their physical capacity to break the decking and connected rods,” she said.

Fatai Mogaji, a young Nigerian man, is said to be on the run after committing a murder.

The man fled into hiding after he allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Opeyemi, multiple times in Lagos state.

According to the bereaved sister of the deceased, the late Opeyemi reunited with Mogaji, her ex-boyfriend, on July 10 at a club in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state and they went to chill together.

At about 5am, they got into an argument and Mohaji allegedly stabbed Opeyemi 22 times in different parts of her body.

Reacting to the news, the force spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, ordered the Lagos state police to commence an investigation into the incident.

Several students writing exams have been trapped after a school building collapsed around 11 am on Friday, at Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community of Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the sudden collapse of the structure led to panic, as students were caught under the debris during the examination period.

Immediate rescue efforts were mobilized to aid the trapped students, with emergency teams, including security personnel from the Nigerian Police and Army, swiftly arriving at the scene to coordinate the rescue operations.

As of now, the number of students affected and the cause of the collapse remain unclear.

Controversial Nigerian artist, Portable was seen in a video engaging in a brawl on the street with a motorcycle rider, whom he accused of theft.

The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board has announced the closure of its online portal for recruiting primary school teachers, with a total of 52,423 applications received during the application window.

The job application portal for recruiting 7,000 primary school teachers was opened on June 25, 2024.

A statement signed by Oyo SUBEB Chairman, Nureni Adeniran, on Thursday, said the job application portal was closed after the July 9 deadline.

He said, “We are impressed by this response which shows that people are truly keen and excited to work with the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board. However, we are compelled to close the portal, as the deadline has passed.”

Adeniran added, “We received not less than 52,423 submitted applications within the number of days of opening the portal. That was impressive.

“After shutting the portal, our team has started sorting out the applications to pick the suitably qualified candidates who will be contacted by the Board.”

According to the chairman, the basic education sub-sector is dear to Governor Seyi Makinde.

He advised applicants to be wary of fake news on the ongoing recruitment process, advising them to regularly check their e-mails and phones for more information on the next steps.

Adeniran stressed that after the applications are sorted, “the next stage will be the CBT examination. The date, venue and time scheduled for each candidate, will be sent to them through their emails and phone numbers.”

In another development, the Board has called for synergy between it and the Oyo State Local Government Staff Pension Board.

This was revealed during a courtesy visit to Oyo SUBEB by the local government staff pension board Chairman, Akeem Ige.

Adeniran said the synergy would assist in ensuring a faster process in the documentation of retired primary school teachers.

A Nigerian female student, Irene Awele has recreated the mugshot of popular crossdresser, Bobrisky on her costume day.

A 25-year-old woman, Endurance Japhet Gunat has passed on seven months after she tied the knot.

She died on Saturday, July 6 and will be laid to rest on Friday in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Her husband, Gunat Japhet posted her obituary on Facebook today.

A 26-year-old Nigerian student simply identified as Victoria, has been reported dead in the United Kingdom after suffering a seizure.

Nigerians in the UK Community confirmed the sad news in a statement on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Victoria, who came to the UK as a Master's student studying MSc Cyber Security, passed away on July 4, 2024.

“Dear Nigerians in the UK, we’re deeply saddened by the loss of a Nigerian in the UK who passed away on the 4th of July,” the statement read.
