The Canadian hip-hop star wagered $300,000 on his home country to defeat Lionel Messi and Argentina on Tuesday night. He stands to be paid $2.88 million if Canada can pull off the upset.

Despite the Canadians being heavy underdogs, it's not a surprise to see Drake throw his support behind the team. He's from Toronto and makes no secret of being a sports homer.

Canada's run to the semifinal has been a pleasant surprise in the tournament. Head coach Jesse Marsch's team entered the Copa América 11th out of the 16 teams based on FIFA rankings.

This is Canada's first appearance in the Copa América. The men's national team is seeking its first title in a major tournament since the North American Nations Cup in 1990.

Tuesday's matchup will mark the second head-to-head meeting with Argentina in the Copa América. Canada lost 2-0 in the first game of group play for both teams on June 20.

That was only the second-ever meeting between the two countries. The first one was a 2010 friendly that Argentina won 5-0.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni announced Messi will be playing in the semifinal. The 37-year-old sat out the final game of group play against Peru on June 29 due to a thigh injury. He was back for the quarterfinal against Ecuador five days later and played all 90 minutes.

A Tanzanian man, Robert Maliaki Lukumay, has left his community in shock as he reportedly returns to life weeks after being run over by a truck and buried.

Robert previously believed to have tragically died in a road accident, reappeared alive and well in his village, sparking surprise and disbelief among his family and neighbours.

During his absence, he lost contact with his family and became homeless, unaware of the unfolding tragedy.

Upon returning to his village, he was met with shock as he discovered that he had been declared dead and laid to rest.

Robert expressed his disbelief and discomfort at the situation, admitting that he had yet to visit his own grave due to the unsettling feeling it gave him.

He also called for the exhumation of the buried body believed to be his, in order to clarify the mistaken identity.

“My wish is for the body to be exhumed so that the identity of whoever is buried is determined,” Robert said.

Robert’s mother, Flora, recounted the fateful day they received news of her son’s death in a road accident.

According to her, they went to the morgue, confirmed it was Robert’s body, and then organized his burial.

“On the day they were burying my son, we noticed the casket was shaking vigorously as it was being lowered,” the mother said in part during the interview.

A female biker was on Monday, July 8, killed by a containerised truck inward Iganmu Bridge area of Lagos state.

It was gathered that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle while in motion and the truck fell on a female biker while descending the Bridge.

LASTMA’s Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq revealed this in a statement via the authority’s official X handle.

The statement partly read, “Early this morning, operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency responders recovered the body of a female biker trapped under a loaded containerised truck in Lagos.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver, who was speeding, lost control and caused the truck to fall on the female biker. The driver fled the scene upon realising the severity of the accident.”

The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 am, noting that “immediately after the incident, LASTMA personnel called in other emergency responders including the LASEMA Response Unit (LRU), for a rescue operation.”

Giwa said the Lagos State Ambulance Service had taken away the deceased’s body. At the same time, the containerised truck was evacuated to clear the way for free vehicular movement on Iganmu Bridge.

He also added that police officers have been deployed to ensure security during the rescue operation.

The governor’s aide commiserated with the deceased’s family and “warned truck drivers to adhere to speed limits both within and outside the state.”

He also advised motorcycle operators, both commercial and private to obey traffic rules and regulations as stipulated in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

A CCTV footage has emerged online showing the startling moment a housemaid urinated in her madam’s mug in the kitchen.

The video has made the rounds on social media, attracting reactions.

In the video, the madam who spoke in Hausa language, said the housemaid has a room that is ensuite, yet decided to urinate in the kitchen using her mug.

She also mentioned that she pays the maid more money than she is supposed to. She further stated that the maid eats the same meals she makes in the house.

On Saturday, July 6, some gunmen kidnapped a chief priestess simply identified as Mrs Kuku and 11 others in Egbo community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident occurred at about 4: pm, Daily Post can report.

It was learnt that the priestess and her followers were under the bridge between Egbo and Ekrokpe communities carrying out sacrifices to her river goddess when the gunmen struck. She and about five of her followers/worshippers were taken away.

Prior to the abduction of the priestess, five other persons had also been kidnapped by the gunmen who came in through the bush.

The gunmen also escaped through the bush, it was gathered.

Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has issued a stern warning to corps members against sharing camp activities on social media.

During a visit to the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun, on Friday, July 5, Ahmed emphasized that posting camp events on social media violates the scheme’s standing rules and policies.

He urged corps members to maintain good character and discipline throughout the three-week orientation exercise. He also encouraged them to stay focused and take full advantage of the skills acquisition program offered in the camp.

“The skills acquisition program is designed to make you self-reliant and not dependent on white-collar jobs,” Ahmed stated. “We are collaborating with stakeholders to provide grants, so please take this opportunity seriously.”

The Director-General assured corps members of their safety and security, stressing that camp officials would not assign them to unsafe locations.

“Your safety is our priority. Be vigilant and take precautionary measures to stay safe,” he added.

Ahmed also advised the corps members to maintain high standards of hygiene to avoid contracting diseases, particularly cholera. He encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors of the NYSC wherever they are posted.

“We want you to be good ambassadors wherever you are posted in the country,” Ahmed concluded.

Police have arrested a student of the Government Day Secondary School, Yola, Adamawa State, for allegedly raping a mad woman.

The suspect, Idris Alex Emeka, was caught pants down on the mentally retarded woman and remanded in a correctional centre.

The Chief Magistrate Court 2, sitting in Yola, ordered the remand of the defendant after he was arraigned before it for the offence of rape.

Magistrate Musa Alhaji Adamu, remanded the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the offence which contravened section 260 of the penal code law.

The prosecution said the 20-year-old randy student was caught in a sex romp with a mentally ill woman on the 26th of June, 2024.

In its First Information Report tendered in court, the prosecution alleged that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the mentally retarded woman for three consecutive times.

While arraigning him on behalf of the state police command, the prosecutor, Inspector Galeon Nimrod informed the court that one Habu Jibrilla came to Karewa Police Station and reported the matter.

Galeon said Jibrilla of the State Low-Cost Estate stated that he had caught the defendant having sex with his victim on the street by 6:40am and arrested him.

A Nigerian lady has been applauded on social media after bagging a first-class degree in mathematics from the University of Uyo (UNIUYO).

The graduate has been identified as Victoria Idobo.

A Nigerian primary six pupil simply, who was identified as Joshua, has drowned.

The boy was swept away by flood in Ikosi, Ketu area of Lagos State.

The pupil was returning home from school alongside his colleagues when the tragic incident occurred on Taiwo Street in Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos.

Reacting to the tragedy, Joshua’s mother, a fruit seller, wept, pulling her hair and lamented the loss of her only child.

“Joshua died hungry and cold. He was in primary six; he was supposed to write his common entrance exam,” she said.

The mother, who was clearly distraught, revealed that she had lost her home in a fire and was living in a temporary shelter.

She pleaded with the public to help her find her son, promising to do anything to get him back.

A witness, who is also a youth leader in the area, known as Oloyede, said he saw children in the rain and warned them to be careful because the area.

“But unfortunately, the plank that was used to bridge the canal was completely covered by water, and they fell into the drainage.

“I managed to swim and rescue one of them, but unfortunately, Joshua was swept away by the heavy currents and died,” he said.

A community leader, who spoke off the record, blamed the government for abandoning a project to channel the drainage, leaving the area prone to flooding.

“In January, the government started a project to channel the drainage, but they abandoned it, leaving us with this unfinished project. Every time it rains, the area is filled with water,” he said.

When contacted, Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, said he did not receive any report on the incident.

Efforts to reach the Lagos police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, did not yield result as he did not respond to calls.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has stated that in seven years time, people would not recognize the country.

The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State stated this while admonishing Nigerians to come together in support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its success.

Since his inauguration last May, Tinubu’s government has faced criticism for ending fuel subsidy on petroleum, leading to a significant increase in the cost of living and putting immense pressure on the people.

However, during the launch of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, Senator Akpabio emphasized that with the backing of the citizens, the Tinubu administration will thrive.

“I have no doubt that by the time the president is through with his tenure in the country, seven years from today, many people will not recognise FCT, they will not recognise Nigeria again,” Akpabio said on Tuesday.

“So, all I can say is: let us continue to pray for him and be hopeful that the challenges you see today, tomorrow, you will see them no more.”

The Senate President noted that the flag-off of the Abuja project signals the government’s commitment to the welfare of the residents of the FCT.

“This is for me, another major wonder of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. This is a way to cater for a city of this nature. This is a way to cater for the people of the area councils, the FCT residents and visitors alike,” the Senate President said.

Akpabio also commended President Tinubu for picking Nyesom Wike as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), despite their different political background.

“So, I believe that you are a square peg in a square hole, and I must thank the President for having the eyes to pinpoint those who can perform and bringing them,” Akpabio told the gathering, describing the project as a hub that will help traffic decongestion, and tackle insecurity among others.

The FCT has seen an increase in insecurity lately, with kidnappings posing a significant threat.

However, Wike said, “When this is completed, what it means is that you have access to the place whether it is raining or not, you are sure of being conveyed on vehicles you can identify: you know who is the one in charge of the vehicle and it would take you to safely to wherever you are going.

“Again, it would reduce the incidences of one-chance [kidnappers parading private cars].”

Wike added that “in that case, it reduces insecurity”.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to ground activities on campuses nationwide from Thursday except the federal government pays the withheld salary arrears of their members.

SSANU said this in a communique at the end of its 48 regular National Executive Council meeting at the University of Benin and signed by its President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim.

On June 20, 2024, the university workers, through a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, gave the government a two-week ultimatum to pay the salary arrears.

In the letter jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and Ibrahim, the unions accused the government of neglect and insincerity.

SSANU, in its communique on Tuesday in Abuja, said despite all promises by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay the arrears, the federal government has continued to “dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.”

Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu promised to respond to the report when he was contacted.

“NEC in session once again expresses utmost dismay at the unprecedented level of Government’s insensitivity and deliberate resolve to cause chaos in the university system by adopting the divide and rule policy to set unions on a collision course through preferential treatment of one union over others.

Recall that SSANU and other unions were compelled by the government to embark on strike in 2022 over the government’s refusal to honour a collective Bargaining Agreement willingly signed by all parties. At the end of the strike, the then Buhari Government further signed an elaborate agreement among which was the non victimisation clause.

“However, the government made a selective payment of the withheld salaries. While we do not begrudge the payment made to our colleagues, we expected the same gesture to be extended to SSANU and NASU which legally complied with all procedures before embarking on the Industrial action. Despite all promises and media hypes by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay these arrears, the government has continued to dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.

“NEC in session deliberated on the matter and unanimously approved a long-drawn comprehensive industrial action after concurrence with the Joint Action Committee meeting of SSANU and NASU scheduled for Thursday 4th July, 2024, if the government fails to pay the four months’ salary arrears,” SSANU said.

The university workers also urged the federal government to resume the payment of the N35,000 wage award.

The union also urged state governments that are yet to commence payment of the wage award to commence payment with the arrears accruing therefrom.

The communique said: “NEC in session also deliberated on the irregular payment of N35,000 wage award to federal civil servants primarily meant to cushion the agonizing effects of fuel subsidy removal pending the approval and implementation of a new national minimum wage. The gross inability of the wage award to heal the excruciating financial wounds is further compounded by its stoppage in Federal Universities with three months arrears already pending. Many states are yet to effect payment of the wage award to our members in state universities thereby increasing their economic woes.

“NEC therefore calls on the Federal Government to immediately resume the payment of the Wage Award alongside the accrued three months arrears without further delay. NEC also calls on State Governments that are yet to commence payment of the Award to commence payment with the arrears accruing therefrom.”

Speaking on the ongoing negotiations on a new minimum wage, the university workers asked the federal government to comply with the demands of labour and hasten the process of negotiation, approval and implementation to be domesticated by both states, local governments and the organised private sector.

The union threatened to join forces with other labour unions to shut down the system if negotiation on a new national minimum wage was not concluded.

“NEC is aware that the Southern Governors Forum had a meeting to discuss an acceptable amount to be paid as National Minimum Wage across the Southern states, with a resolution that they should be allowed to discuss with unions on how to pay the NMW based on availability of funds. NEC further noted that the issue of NMW is on the Exclusive Legislative List and not on the Concurrent List, and so the federal government is to decide on an acceptable NMW.

“SSANU, therefore, rejects in strong terms the proposal of the Southern Governors Forum in negotiating the NMW with their respective state labour centres,” the communique stated.

SSANU also urged the government to as a matter of urgency reconstitute a new committee for the renegotiation of the SSANU/FGN 2009 Agreement as the issue was long overdue.

“SSANU has earnestly offered itself for the renegotiation process to continue and awaits the invitation of the Federal Government on the issue without further delay,” the university workers said.

The union applauded the effort of the federal government to reconstitute the Governing Councils of federal universities.

SSANU noted that the gesture would facilitate the smooth administration of federal institutions.

“However, NEC frowns at the non-appointment of educationist and experienced technocrats who could have contributed better to the development of our citadels of learning,” the union added.

An Ikeja High Court on Monday ordered the release of a man, Kazeen Adeshina, after spending 15 years in a correctional facility without charge or trial.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Oyindamola Ogala, while ruling in a fundamental rights enforcement suit marked No: D/16997MFHR/24 filed by Adeshina’s counsel, Mr Ben Okeke, held that detaining of Adeshina in prison without charge or trial was unjustifiable.

Ogala, in her ruling, said the arrest and continued detention of Adeshina in the custody of the Medium Correctional Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos without a trial was wrong, illegal and unjustifiable.

She added that it was a gross violation of the applicant’s fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

“As afore-stated, there is unchallenged fact that this applicant has remained in custody for about 15 years and is yet to be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.

“The presumption of innocence enshrined in our constitution remains sacrosanct and it is indeed a travesty of justice for this to occur withou administration of criminal justice, no matter where the delay emanates from.

“Counsel to the first respondent has exhibited correspondence to the police to transfer the suspect for arraignment since 2003 which has remained unattended to and it appears that this applicant has fallen through the cracks and thus remained in custody for such years without trial.

“The presumption of innocence in our constitution remains sacrosanct and it is clear to this court that no good cause has been exhibited necessitating the continued remand of the applicant and therefore this court finds that the applicant is entitled to the declaratory order sought,” she said.

The judge, thereafter, ordered the immediate and unconditional release of the applicant from the custody of the Kirikiri Medium Correctional Centre.

The applicant’s counsel, Okeke, had filed the suit against the Lagos State Attorney-General, the Commissioner of Police and the Controller, Nigerian Correctional Service, Lagos State as first to third respondent respectively.

The applicant had prayed the court for a declaration that the arrest and continued detention of Adeshina in custody without a a formal charge or trial was wrongful, illegal, unjustifiable and a gross violation of the applicant’s fundamental human rights.

The applicant’s counsel said: “An order directing the immediate and unconditional release of the applicant from the custody of the third respondent, Medium Correctional Centre, Kirikiri Lagos.

“An injunction restraining the respondents, their agents or privies from further breach of the applicants’ fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria as amended.

“An order admitting the applicant to bail pending his arraignment in court and for such further or other orders as this Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstances.

“The applicant filed in support of the application, the affidavit of urgency of six paragraphs as well as a supporting affidavit of 15 paragraphs deposed to by Joe Ameh, the Executive Coordinator in the office of Zarephath Aid dated the March 8.”

The applicant’s counsel referred the court to the provisions of Section 35 (1) of the Constitution and submitted that it was inferable that whenever a deprivation of right to personal liberty is sought pursuant thereto, such deprivation must satisfy two conditions to satisfy the approval of the constitution.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs is dead.

The actor died on Sunday, June 30, at the age of 82.

Recall that Jacobs, a multiple award-winning actor, has been battling dementia for some time.

In a recent interview, his wife Joke Silva said her husband’s poor health had changed him significantly, adding that Olu Jacobs is no longer the man she walked down the aisle with 37 years ago.

“It hasn’t been easy. There was a point of acceptance for me that everything happening is reality. It is like the person I married, 80 per cent of the time, is no longer there,” she said.

“But the thing is this: when he was there, he was an incredible father to his children and an amazing husband. He was practically my best friend.”

Silva said despite her husband’s health challenge, she has not stopped loving him.

“The husband I knew is no longer there for me. This man that is here is someone I still love, but love in a different way,” she said.

At least 103 Nigerians who were deported from Turkey over migration related issues, have been received by the Federal Government.

Some of the issues were expired visas, irregular migration, among others.

Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI stated this on Friday during the deportees’ profiling in Abuja.

Represented by Amb. Catherine Udida, the Director Migration Affairs in the commission, Ahmed said that the commission expected 110 deportees but received 103, all males.

“Some of them have been in the deportation camp for some months, and now that they are here, we are hoping to follow up on all the allegations gathered in their profiling.

“We will go through the profiling forms, because some of them have said that their passports were seized.

“We are going to follow up with the Turkish authority, because the passports are still the property of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he assured.

According to him, the NCFRMI is the mandate agency responsible for all returnees, irrespective of their status.

“We equally have a programme where we train them and thereafter reintegrate them into the society”, the Federal Commissioner stated.

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) announced plans to arrest skitmakers releasing online content without approval. The board, led by Shaibu Husseini, issued a social media statement warning filmmakers and content creators to stop producing, promoting, and distributing unapproved content on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.

The statement expressed growing concern over the proliferation of content violating Nigeria’s censorship laws. “The attention of the National Film and Video Censors Board has been drawn to the activities of some unscrupulous filmmakers/content creators who are clearly flouting the provisions of the country’s law with impunity,” it began.

The NFVCB specifically targeted same-sex content, declaring it illegal in Nigeria. The board, responsible for censoring and classifying films and videos, emphasized the legal requirement for all content, including skits and music videos, to be classified by the NFVCB before distribution or exhibition.

Reminding creators of the 2014 Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, the board stated, “It is an offense to directly or indirectly make a public show (Exhibition) of same-sex relationships in Nigeria.” The board also reiterated that distributing or exhibiting any film or video content without NFVCB classification is illegal.

The NFVCB announced its collaboration with security agencies to identify and take legal action against those violating these regulations.

Promising soccer star slumps, dies during match in Oyo

Tragedy occurred in Okeho, Kajola Local Government Area of Oyo State when a promising footballer, Oyekunle Baaki, popularly known as Smart slumped and died during a football match.

Smart, 27 a player with United FC Okeho died on Wednesday night, while featuring in Eleniyan football competition between his team and Accurate FC, Iganna.

Star Potter gathered that the tragic incident occured during the extra time after the match ended goalless in the 90 minutes.

According to one of the fans: “Before the match commenced, he snapped with some of the players and uploaded them on his Snapchat.”

“He was alone, nobody was with him, he just slumped and people rushed to help him but he died before they got to the hospital.”

Mufideen Dallax , a community youth leader in Okeho while speaking with Vanguard said: “His death was shocking, I knew him to be a kind and resourceful person.”

A 50-year-old bricklayer who spent 24 years in prison for a crime he did not commit has shared his ordeal after he was released.

Lukman Adeyemi was just 26 years old when he accompanied a friend who had been invited by police to the police station.

His act of loyalty towards his friend led to him being detained. He ended up spending 24 years in jail and was only freed on June 14, 2024.

He spent nine years in pre-trial detention, followed by an unbearable 15 years on death row.

Narrating how he was detained, he explained that when he got to the station with his friend, during interrogations by SARS Police officers, he endured severe physical and psychological torment, leading to coerced confessions for crimes he knew nothing about.

Sharing his story with Vanguard, he said: "I am Lukman Adeyemi, a native of Iwerele, Iwajowa Local Government, Oyo State. I am a Bricklayer by profession. I was 26 years old when I had this problem.

"In August 2000, after returning home from work with a friend living with me, Ismaila Lasisi, we were told that the Police came to look for Ismaila and he was asked to report himself in the station.

“I immediately decided to follow him to the station, lo and behold I was arrested and detained along with him. I was tortured to the point of death over a crime I knew nothing about, right from the police station.

"I had a close shave with the death over a murder of a woman who was hired by some ex-friends of Ismaila Lasisi to fetch water for them at the construction site. The woman left home in the morning and she never returned home.

"Ismaila Lasisi once lived with them. He begged to come and live with me after he had a misunderstanding with these people in March. I knew these people from a far distance. Our paths never crossed in life for anything. This was how I was charged to court along with these people over an offence I never had any knowledge of.

"In 2009 we were sentenced to death. We filed separate appeals but the appeal failed to the Supreme Court.

"My story of innocence to whoever cared to listen fell on deaf ears, with many questioning, ‘If you’re not one of them, why mention your name?’ ‘If truly you are innocent why can’t court free you?’

"I felt abandoned by truth itself. I spent 24 years behind bars like 24 hours, a sleepless night that lasted for two decades.

"In June 2023 one of the officers of the Correctional Service, Deputy Superintendent of Correctional (DSC) AbdulKareem Awesu introduced my case to a Pastor and I spoke with him on phone.

"On 17th July 2023, a group Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation, CJMR, led by Pastor Hezekiah Olujobi visited us at the Ibara Correctional Service where they listened to all of us including the culprits who exonerated us. The organization went with all our judgement and shed light on our innocence.

"June 14, 2024, shall remain evergreen and memorable day in my life. Light shone upon me, rain fell on my head for the first time and I saw the moon for the first time.

"I never knew I could pay for the sin of another man. How could I have committed an offense and still boldly walk into a police station to report myself?

“I am grateful that the organization Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation intervened on my behalf, a beacon of hope in a sea of despair. Her belief in my innocence reignited the flame of justice within me, propelling me toward the possibility of redemption.”

Pastor Hezekiah Deboboye Olujobi the Executive Director of Centre for Justice Mercy and Reconciliation, CJMR, an NGO based in Ibadan shed light on the innocence of Lukman Adeyemi and Ismaila Lasisi.

He said: "Our attention was drawn to the complaints of these two people on their claim of innocence by the Welfare Officer DCP Awesu, who invited us to come and help these people assuring us of their innocence and the effort made through the legal process without justice.

"We came down to Ibara Custodial Centre, Abeokuta, to hear from them. The two perpetrators confided in us that truly, they were the ones who committed the crime and that the two people were totally innocent of the crime. We adjusted our seats to hear them very well.

“It was a long drilling of questions on their parts. But yet they insisted on their innocence. What they said carried no weight in my ears until I read through the judgement that convicted them. We obtained their judgements from both the trial court and the Supreme Court for our review. We noticed the presentation of the state before the appellate court could never allow the court to shift ground.”

Pastor Olujobi said he observed that “while reading through their separate judgements, it was a contradiction.”

Narrating how the release of both innocent suspects was facilitated, Pastor Olujobi said: “With all the analysis and the evidence in the record, we forwarded our findings to the office of the Attorney-General of Ogun State and the Committee for the Board of Prerogative of Mercy and they considered our appeal.

"It's not about their story, it is about the fact that the record corroborated their story."

Currently, Lukman Adeyemi and Ismaila Lasisi are at the CJMR Halfway Home for recovery and reintegration process.

According to reports, she passed away in the early hours of today after a long battle with an undisclosed illness.

The Alumni of the Mass Communication department at Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, have taken to their various social media platforms to mourn her demise.

Also confirming the incident, Fresh FM Osogbo has posted a condolence message on their social media pages.

The station wrote, “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Fresh FM Osogbo announces the untimely passing of one of our esteemed staff members after a brief illness.

“Taiwo Kekereekun, passed away today, Monday June 24th, 2024. She left behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and camaraderie that will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of working with her.

The richest family in UK has been jailed.

Four members of Britain’s richest family on Friday were sentenced by a court in Switzerland for exploiting Indian staff at their Geneva mansion.

According to AFP, the Hindujas — who were not present in court — were acquitted of human trafficking, but convicted on other charges in a stunning verdict for the family whose fortune is estimated at 37 billion pounds ($47 billion).

Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal Hinduja each got four years and six months, while their son Ajay and his wife Namrata received four-year terms, the presiding judge in Geneva ruled.

The cases stem from the family’s practice of bringing servants from their native India and included accusations of confiscating their passports once they were flown to Switzerland.

Prosecutors argued the Hindujas paid their staff a pittance and gave them little freedom to leave the house.

The family denied the allegations, claiming the prosecutors wanted to “do in the Hindujas”.

The Hindujas reached a confidential out-of-court settlement with the three employees who made the accusations against them.

Despite this, the prosecution decided to pursue the case due to the gravity of the charges.

Geneva prosecutor Yves Bertossa had requested a custodial sentence of five and a half years against Prakash and Kamal Hinduja.

Aged 78 and 75 respectively, both had been absent since the start of the trial for health reasons.

In his closing address, the prosecutor accused the family of abusing the “asymmetrical situation” between powerful employer and vulnerable employee to save money.

Household staff were paid a salary between 220 and 400 francs ($250-450) a month, far below what they could expect to earn in Switzerland.

But the Hinduja family’s defence lawyers argued that the three plaintiffs received ample benefits, were not kept in isolation and were free to leave the villa.

“We are not dealing with mistreated slaves,” Nicolas Jeandin told the court.

Indeed, the employees “were grateful to the Hindujas for offering them a better life”, his fellow lawyer Robert Assael argued.

Representing Ajay Hinduja, lawyer Yael Hayat had slammed the “excessive” indictment, arguing the trial should be a question of “justice, not social justice”.

Namrata Hinduja’s lawyer Romain Jordan also pleaded for acquittal, claiming the prosecutors were aiming to make an example of the family.

He argued the prosecution had failed to mention payments made to staff on top of their cash salaries.

“No employee was cheated out of his or her salary,” Assael added.

Some staff even asked for raises, which they received.

With interests in oil and gas, banking and healthcare, the Hinduja Group is present in 38 countries and employs around 200,000 people.

A pregnant woman, Mrs. Ogunbunmi has been kidnapped by armed men in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

Ogunbunmi who is due for delivery was abducted after leaving her home in Oke Lantoro, to the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. Her husband, Ogunbunmi Lateef, said he had received a WhatsApp message notifying him of his wife’s kidnap by the abductors.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola who confirmed the incident said;

“One Ogunbunmi Lateef of Oke Lantoro, Abeokuta reported that his pregnant wife due for delivery left home for State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta. He received a WhatsApp message confirming the abduction of his wife by unknown armed men”
