Science/TechnologyRe: World Largest Tortoise Found In Amazon River by primusmaximus: 7:35am On Sep 27, 2013
The "tortoise" is not real. The picture is a scene from the 2006 Japanese movie "Gamera the Brave" which features a giant turtle creature. At one point in the movie, the wounded Gamera is transported via a military truck to a research facility. The circulating image is apparently taken from this part of the movie.

CFCfan: You're welcome.
Lagos's GDP is around $87bn, which means the debt is less than 10% of GDP; therefore the debt is not close to a yoke on the LASG.
Less than 1% actually... If the GDP is indeed $87bn

9ijaMan: The first criteria at getting a shot into an O&G firm is to finish first with a 2:1. At least a lot of interview doors will easily open for you. UniLag and UniBen have for long ranked among the top schools in Nigeria. UniPort obviously enjoys the advantage of location. I know some here feel schools don't matter, they are very much entitled to their opinion. My almost 15 years in the industry, shows clearly that Schools do really matter. Arguing that they don't matter amounts to self denial. In the UK and the US it's the same. In fact, it does happen too in the middle east.

Back to your questions, those three schools have an almost equal ranking within the industry in Nigeria, once again UniPort enjoys location advantage, hence it just about ranks equal with the other two heavy weights.

Since there will be no significant "school factor" advantage, it then boils down to individual performance, members of the interviewing panel and finally luck.

My response above is based on real life experience and not some "equal opportunity employer" hogwash.

EducationRe: Chemical Engineering Vs Petroleum Engineering by primusmaximus: 12:23pm On Sep 19, 2013
If university is irrelevant what's the whole point of university ranking/rating? doesn't a graduate of chemical engineering at MIT stand a better chance than a graduate of Chemical engineering at Howard university? or can we compare the chances of a graduate of Cambridge/Oxford with one from university of Bolton? or is it that the whole irrelevance of university choice applies just to Nigerian universities since our schools are all regarded as below standard? Also, is it that the B.Sc given in US and UK is different from the B.Sc here in Nigeria? If no, then why do all our people want to run there for education? These are questions we should ask ourselves. Cheers

[color=#000099]I may have to correct you again though i appreciate some of your valid points,

FPSO means floating production storage offshore, from its name alone, you can deduce that it produces as much as it stores,
an example in Nigeria, is Bonga owned by shell, Akpo operated by Total. i give you specifics to enable you to verify and make corrections when i am out of line.

FSO, means floating storage offshore, it has only storage capacity examples are; exxon owned Yoho, Addax (now Sinopec) owned Knocka doom and Total owned Unity.

it is not correct to say that FPSO does not produce oil, i agree with your transition analogy but in reality they are upstream.

jp philips: please do me a favor, can you show me a job advert from a reputable company (not one man company) who has "name of institution'' as a major criteria, please. i want to learn from you as well.
Earlier this year Total Invited 300 people for a scholarship (IFP France) aptitude test we didn't apply for.. on getting there we asked how me were selected and their HR manager told us that they went to their database and picked 2.1 and 1st class graduates from the top universities in Nigeria.. anyone that wrote that test can verify what i just said... No company will ever publish that in an advert, its more of an HR thing, and its not only happening in the oil sector

kenneyyice: Tankz peepz but shuld i jugde it base on skul, base on d course or base on job opportunity.... I got petroleum engineering in uniben tru jamb and chemical engineering in unizik tru pre science.. Which one shuld i accept
personally, I think you should take all 3 factors seriously.. Its a very tricky situation you are in and its a decision no one can really make for you. A graduate from uniben is more likely to get a job before a grad from unizik (All other factors being equal) and a Chemical engineering grad is more likely to get a Job than a Petroleum engineering grad (all other factors being equal).. Companies with job openings will even come to uniben during your undergrad years. Halliburton, shell and Total will come offering you guys(Top 10 in your department) programs too during you undergad years at Uniben.. If in your shoes I'll have gone with Uniben

gbengadada2004: Pls this your opinion in terms of job prospect is it in relation to getting job in oil and gas industry?
I have to ask this because, in these days of telecommunication apart from Electrical, Computer Engineering have more job prospect than Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum and the other ones you have listed. I have so many jobless friends that studied Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum etc. Infact the Head of Department of Chemical Engineering in my University once said that if he was opportuned to choose course as an undergraduate again, he will choose Computer Engineering. As an electrical or computer engineer, banks and telecommunication companies like mtn, glo, etisalat, etc are there to employ you.
1st- Electrical
2nd- Computer
Others can follow.
To jobs in general.... I think Electrical is 1st without a doubt because they can literally work anywhere (bank, school, farm, telecoms etc)..... why i dint put computer engineering as 2nd is because they have to compete for Jobs with departments like systems Engineering, computer Science and some others.. looking at my list again i think civil should be in top 3 prospects wise
