TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by princeonx: 3:56pm On Oct 05, 2013
manny4life: Lol... The system in America is not easy o

This past Monday (four days ago), I went to the Kia dealer on Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge because I got a letter offer from them stating they want to buy out my car. YES, I still drive my lovely Kia Sorento (call me old fashioned, na you sabi o). grin grin grin . When I walked in there, I met the dude Justin, we started talking, I told him I was there to appraise my car and though I wasn't looking to buy but may explore options. After like an hour, the numbers came in ($4,400) was the value of the car, I was like DAMN... I thought it would have depreciated because of the recent accidents I had. Long story short, he told me let's go look at cars, and I said cool, I like the new Optimas...

Man, this Optimas were the BOMB, this model was the shitt, after punching numbers and told me what my bill was, I called Progressive my Insurance carrier, I would have to pay extra $80 extra for insurance because it's a new car. I told him, I'll go him and reevaluate my finances and then come back, he said I should do it now, at his desk, this dude tried convincing me for like 3hrs to get me into a car, I just told him I was tired and wanted to go home, nna men, I carry myself waka from the dealership.

Moral of the story: why spend extra $400 more on car note and insurance (property taxes not included) on what I'm paying on my car? My car is clean, no mechanical or electrical repairs other than the front bumper that was replaced when I had a fatal accident. As for credit card, I only have two: American Express Gold Card and Capital One rewards, that's it... With minimum balances rolling on it. When my Nigerian friend told me he owed $21k on his CC, I shouted... This is same person who was surprised at my savings when I told him I wanted to see a tax adviser because I wanted to cash out and use it when I relocate to Nigeria. When I told him about my accumulated vacation time (300+ hrs) and I will cash it out at exchange, he was surprised...That's a plan right there.

Moral of second story: Lots of Nigerians need "FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE". Many do not know what it is, you drive big cars, live in nice house, I like that as well, but most spend all their lives working. I said to myself, I won't cross a certain age and I'm still working, mbanu... That's a curse. I gat to be my own boss grin grin grin
My point exactly! You got out of it because you're deciplined! Others will be like "what'a h€££" let me just sign the papers after all they're giving me $4400 for my old car which I thought was around or between $2-$3k.
True the system is not easy to deal with bcox most time they even throw it at your foot but you have to be smart. I pay about $120 for 3 cars a month (07 Camry, 05 Altima, and 2005 C320) because this cars are paid for! If not, that amount won't even pay for one car insurance a month! Most Nigerians have too much pride! When around some you hear things like "Do you know I live next to the whitehouse? Do you know I went to Havard? Am a Doctor! I drive such and such 2013 car! Those achievement are very good but None will tell you how deep indept they are! Or how many jobs they work or number of days they're on call after a whole day's job. I honestly feel sorry for them especially the older ones that still have to work damn hard to maintain an already high standard of life they're or want to live.
I was behind this Nigeria lady at Costco last week trying to check out and when she open her wallet, shocked this lady has nothing less than 15 credit cards! Just name it she has it! In her mind she think she's showing off cux she just flipped it open asking me about family, and about our family trip to naija and how it's not easy to go with wife and kids! And I was almost like, with all this your cards you can't?
Ol'boy today na Saturday me em make me sit here with folks talking trash! Who wan come make him come! Who wan kill himself with dept make him carry on! America/life is what you make it!
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by princeonx:
manny4life: For me, I think I have to say my mind on what I think about this thread.

America for the most part is not what it used to be for several reasons which I will address, an immigrant migrating to the U.S., "PERHAPS" does have a better chance of living an "okay" life than if they were in Nigeria, then the true question is "at what cost"? Everyone here paid a price, you have to stay focused and remain steadfast, nonetheless, you still got to think about "HOME".

Education: Please do not believe the false hope that tuition is free and cheap, you will be sadly disappointed when you arrive. On the contrary, education right now in this country is actually being defunded meaning that federal pell grants and what have you will see significant decrease in the upcoming years. Where does that leave you as an immigrant? Not to discourage anyone, you can stay competitive, but at what cost?

Healthcare: Contrary to some have posted on here, illegal immigration is a big debate, MOST STATES do not give healthcare to illegal immigrants because taxpayers are funding it through the medicare/medicaid programs. It's very unlikely that you will get good healthcare as an immigrant.

Housing: This is a serious issue, all fingers aren't equal. Housing is cheap and expensive depending on where you look. On this, it's a 50/50 chance, so either way, you'll be fine.

Status: This is the koko of the matter, without this, YOU'RE NOTHING. I repeat YOU'RE NOTHING. It doesn't matter your degree, if you don't have the right status, you have to toil hard to make it through. Just go the legal way and get your papers. When you get your papers, you can qualify for in-state tuition, healthcare, grants, credit, housing assistance and what have you.

In all, a pauper in Nigeria is likely better to get fresh air tinz when they arrive, but after you have crossed a certain limit, the system begins to hit on you. For me, this is where I'm beefing the system. grin grin grin
Your left one thing out! Show-off! Nigerians like to show off but guess what? No body give a rat a$$!
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Don't blame the system! If u abbuse the system, the system will do the same to u! Simple as that. It only messes you up If you missuse it or jump into it without being properly informed. Don't go and buy a 2013/2012 car that you really can't afford with one job bcox you have good credit! Instead buy an 04/05 that you can pay cash for and not worry about car payment! Car loan require full coverage insurance cux technically it's not yours yet while a car paid for can just get basic or liability insurance which is about quater of pull coverage cost!
I saved and paid $40,000 down for my house and financed the rest for only 15yrs which hopefully will be done in less than 5yrs (that's amount is still less than I paid for an empty land without road or waterline in Lagos). I didn't jump into a $500k house or mortgage that will make me work 2 or more jobs and last 30yrs to pay! All that matters is safety/good area, school system for kids, etc. All American colleges and uni are of good standard! Go to a college that's affordable, get financial aids if you can! And try to work little part time job on the side while in school. Those name brand schools like havard are good if you're on scholarship! Don't spend your weekend kicking it and partying while u could be working little jobs paying your tuition as you go! Or jump into one and accumulate $150-$200k student loan just because the system made it available. Credit card is out dated! I only have one for car rentals! If I can't pay for it, I don't want it or not ready for it. Don't abbuse it bcox you have it and by the time you know it, you've racked up debts that you can't pay or spend 40yrs paying! How old are you left to live?
What else?, status! Visit travel section, you'll learn more than I can explain here. I have never seen or heard of anyone rejected at the hospital here when/if sick! Legal or not! Yes they will ask all that paper stuff and insurance if you can stand and talk and all that! If not or if seriously ill they will attend to you sharp sharp! That won't happen in naija! You can also go to free clinics! No question ask! Might take 1 weeks to get u in if you're not dying but they'll take care of you and write your priscription of pills to buy!
Finally and back to the top, Nigerians like show off and I repeat nobody cares! Your car loan officer might have a 1998 corolla sitting in the parking lot while in his office writing you a loan of $20-$30k for car! Na craz?
Me I don taya oh! Make any and everybody do watin them like!!
Some of you go use credit card buy ticket, buy stuffs, cars, and all that to go show off for naija, then come back broke after a month to tell me how bad American system is! Them force you back on plane?
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by princeonx: 2:05pm On Oct 05, 2013
Btruth: I agreed with you. Not until the day the black race will stop the mentality of been wealthy by all means. Blacks have put money above the value of life. We tend to oppress each other with our wealth, and also, they tend to show off above their peers, instead of helping each others to grow up to attain the same level. As a result of this, African nations have suffered severe set backs because of the same mentality display by our different leaders.
Exactly!
This living abroad thing to some is just all about money money money! Everybody is not crazy about fast money or making it quick quick! And everybody will never live in Nigeria or America regardless what! Nigerians have been in American far back as when $3 was equivalent to N1.
Yes we have sold our heart for $0 to money and riches. We value money more than any and every single thing in life including life itself and family! How can somebody stay away from his wife and children for like 20yrs in the name of trying to make it abroad or trying to get papers? What will you make/get after that papers that you failed/didn't make in 20yrs? We really need some mentality change!

He's the world most powerful leader! Live with it! Or jump off the bridge! I promise you even if your death appears in news, he still won't know!

babyosisi: And see what in DC ?
Majority of homeless people on the streets of down town America are the mentally ill who refuse treatment, substance abusers and chronic alcoholics
That is a fact
Majority of the ones in LA are runaways drawn to the lure of Hollywood
There are homeless shelters in America and some stay there and those who can't abide by the rules of keeping off drugs cannot stay
Paint the real picture please.
The Nigerians looking to emigrate are usually college graduates not drug addicts and drunks
So telling them about homeless americans without showing them that majority of Nigerians here are doing well is being deceptive
That is what many are trying to get across
You are peddling lies and half truths
Help me tell am!
You gotta be kidding me. Ask people who live in DC how far the ghettos are from the white house. Ask them if homeless people dont stay RIGHT IN FRONT OF union station, opposite the Fed and right close to Congress. I am done replying this, just ask one of the NUMEROUS nairalanders who live in DC if 2 mins is even FAR enough
This is exactly why me and you are here having this conversation! I don't live or close to the ghetto! And I don't have one closer than atleast 20mnts from me! Might be 2,5mnts for others that's them! America is not the same for everybody so no body especially those that it didn't favor should not discourage anybody especially someone that is suffering in Nigeria not to come to US if they have the opportunity. And like you said, homeless people live or stay Mnts from the WhiteHouse!! That's America for you! Can that ever happen in Nigeria/Abuja? Minutes from Aso rock? I don't think so! Not with the way states in Nigeria are deporting people to their states!
Guy! to live for America no be by force oh! You cant claim you don't eat beans but eat Akara or moimoi!!! If you don't like it here or can't make it here! Try other places or better still go back naija!! You can't live abroad and condemn it and also discourage people from coming yet you no wan leave!

Visit the travel section when you can and read/hear what half of this folks here are saying or asking how to get visas to even places you won't believe!! Some are even and still crying foul about the disqualification of nigeria in the US DV lottery even though we've reached our limit. You know what? Ara ga gba ndi ara! What'a h€££!

Lucasbalo: . You are right . I guess something about your post just got to me. You can look up my postings before all our encounters. This is very unlike me. Something must have pushed my button. To be candid, my significant other would be disappointed if she sees all what transpired between you and I. Will surprise you with what I am about to say. I even like your aggressive no take prisoner attitude . I am like that in some way. I was born and raised in Lagos Island and that was how we grew up. Like I said before, no animose against you and I sincerely apologize for my utterances. Hope you accept it in good faith. Peace to you.
Mr Millionaire I am an uber patriot. Some of our brightest minds like Larry Summers critics this "our" beloved country USA.
2. This thread does not COMPARE nigeria to america, it highlights some truths that may be missing from TV Nigerians watch
Ofcox there's really no reason to compare USA (sleep) to Nigeria (death) it's incomparable but at the same time anyone that have something up there doesn't need a TV to tell you that America is not heaven! Even heaven am sure have toilet which is filled with $h!t!! America has it good, bad, and ugly side. The ugly and dirty places you pictured here with the poster are places people drive maybe 20 or 30 minutes to see or get to! While this are sites you see in naija just 2minutes from the airport! Yes the thread might or may not be comparing the two countries but when you tell a Nigerian that America is not good, what option do you leave them with if not home (Nigeria)? That's where the comparison comes in!

Bottom line: those of us (Nigerians abroad) that think Nigeria is bad, can't be fixed, corrupt, f4ked up and not a place to live are not patriotic and yes we are bad Nigerians and don't even deserve a green passport (only to enter naija anyway) but those of you who love naija so much, believe it can be fixed, patriotic, and yet live abroad or do absolutely nothing to fix it are worst!

Privacy in situations where blinds or covers are being clean/wash is more of a concern than burglars! That's my own opinion anyway. Any burglar or thief that can enter or climb this window can also do that with a regular size windows too! We just pray they don't remember us.

kennygee: Abortion is a sin depending on the Intent. If two married people didn't plan for it and it happened or if it poses a risk for the mother then it is ok. It is not ok for a single unrepentant and slutty young lady to use abortion as an easy way out, it is a sin. Fornication is already a sin, to add Murder to it is another sin, but if a young lady gets pregant out of wedlock, she should keep the pregnancy unless it puts her at risk.
If two married people didn't plan for it and it happen then its Ok for Abortion? I fear you oh!

And Nigerians are funny set of characters!
See how everybody is saying "we! we!!" Now because we're talking about another country (US). This is the same Ppl that will fight/kill eachother in other thread/topics for simply being an Igbo, Yoruba, or Hausa! Now the same folks are talking of saving Nigeria from her corrupt leaders who might even be better than most folks here on NL!
TravelRe: Nigeria Ineligible For US DV-2015 by princeonx: 1:11pm On Sep 16, 2013
Burger01: Believe me some Nigerians are just hopeless. They forget that there is no place like home and wherever one is one is still regarded a Nigerian. There is nuffin in usa except you don't say the truth. I do my hols yearly in Massachusetts and I tell you people suffer in that place. Lottery my foot. It's just a slavery system that most people shy away from this reality..
Nigerians wake up and stop being third rated citizens in your host countries. Smh.
Do you get this frustrated (written all over ur voice) when on hols in Massachusetts? That's what we're talking about! People are hard working in the US not waiting for no oil or politics money. Can you guess how many hours even Obama work per day or week? There is nothing in US yet you made it your Holliday destination every year? Guess you have nothing up there then.
Bottom line my guy, the definition of good life in Nigeria or for nigerian is way different for America or Americans likewise those that live here. Everything is not about money! Money! Or being rich. People might be working two jobs in America by choice or condition or even for wahala of families back home that you the rich man cant handle alone! And to you that is definition of suffering? So during all that your hols you haven't noticed that there's a working system in place here? Right from the airport to schools, hospitals, roads, power supply, water, and all that? Pls don't play that naija big man/boy crap here while making a fool out of yourself! America might not be all that but stop comparing sleep (America) to death (Nigeria). Nigerians have been living in American way back to when $3 was 1naira and Nigerians will always live here even if Nigerian becomes 10 times better than US! So stop expecting Nigerians in US to come back hole (home). Why don't you start first by going home abi na your village u dey for naija?
