Politics / Obaseki: “No One Made Me Governor” (Photos) by Priscy01(f): 7:33am On Nov 14, 2019
As the crisis within the APC in Edo state deepens, Governor Godwin Obaseki, the state governor, yesterday denied claims made by supporters of his predecessor and APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole, that the latter facilitated his emergence as governor of the state.

Obaseki denied the claims at a meeting organised by members of the APC in the state to ratify the suspension of Oshiomole from the party. He stressed that no one made him a governor and that his emergence as a governor is by the grace of God.

Speaking at the meeting, Obaseki who has been in a running battle with Oshiomole, the APC National Chairman, said he is not happy with the recent political developments in the state, especially the disruptions from a once-trusted leader who has thrown caution to the wind to cause disaffection among APC members in the state.

While speaking to the party faithfuls, the governor said when he first met Oshiomhole 12 years ago, they shared a common interest in salvaging Edo State but all that has changed in recent times.

"I am not an ungrateful person. No one made me governor. I became governor by God’s grace, with the support of many other people. If God had said I would not be governor, no way would I have been a governor. It is wrong for someone to say he made me governor.

“No one gave me money. The funds Oshiomhole initially raised for his governorship ambition was raised by me in Lagos. If I can raise money for him for his election, why would I not be able to raise money for my own election.

If you came into power on some basic principles, do not expect to change those principles because you have certain ambition. If you came to power believing no man is God, then the day you start to play God, you will get the consequences.” Obaseki said.

Politics / Road Comment: Resign Now, Apologize To Nigerians - PDP Tells Fashola by Priscy01(f): 1:07pm On Nov 09, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charges the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to resign immediately and apologize to Nigerians over his ''unpardonable comment'' that the terrible state of roads in the nation is being exaggerated.

Fashola at a press conference on Wednesday November 7th, said Nigerian roads are not as bad as Nigerians portray them to be.

In a statement released by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP described Fashola's comment as unfortunate, ''especially coming from the Minister of Works, who ought to be apologetic for the decrepit state of roads across the country since the last four years he has been minister. ''

The party described the Minister's comment as a ''violent assault on the sensibility of over 200 million Nigerians and further demonstrates the disdain with which the Buhari administration holds our citizens who lost their lives and many more who daily undergo mental and physical torture using our dilapidated roads”, Igbere TV reports.

The statement added that every Nigerian knows that most of the roads across the country are in a sorry state.

The PDP holds that the minister’s comment must be premeditated and reflects the official position of the Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, which has no regard for Nigerians and only thrives in propaganda and false claims to cover its failures in governance.

Every Nigerian knows that most of the major roads across the country are in sorry state and that travelling on our roads has become traumatizing and one of the highest life threatening experiences in our country since the last four years.

The comment by the failed minister of works is therefore highly provocative and capable of invoking the anger of Nigerians, because it shows that either he has not been going through our roads and as such not in touch with reality or he has exposed himself as falsehearted official.

Our party is however not surprised at such comment from the minister because the Buhari administration, in which he serves, thrives only in propaganda, blame game, excuses and false performance claims because it has nothing to offer.

The minister's reprehensible claim is therefore a clear pointer that Nigerians should not expect any intervention on roads under the Buhari administration.

This is the same minister who boasted that any responsible government should fix power within six months, only for the Buhari administration, with him as minister supervising power, to turn around and wrecked the gains achieved by previous administrations.

The PDP invites Nigerians to note that such leadership failures characterized by reckless statements is always characteristic of governments that did not derive from the mandate of the people at the polls and therefore believe that it is not answerable to them.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has said that corrupt persons do not flaunt their wealth as they used to before the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister said this on Thursday in Abuja at the special town hall meeting on the fight against corruption hosted by his ministry in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, Igbere TV reports.

Mohammed added that the war against corruption is a war of survival for Nigeria.

“For as long as the nation fails to check corruption, tackling insecurity and the revamping the economy will remain a mirage.

“In other words, the fight against corruption is pivotal to the success of the other cardinal programmes of the Administration,” he said.

“One may say that the war against corruption is still a war in progress, it is also fair to say that corruption has been driven under the table.

“The corrupt ones can no longer flaunt the proceeds of their corruption the way they used to do in the past.

“That is a major step forward. After all, every successful battle is a step towards winning a war.”

Panelists at the event included the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, and the Chairman of Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye.

Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has assured the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of the state government’s continuous support in discharging and fulfilling its mandate in the state.

Ugwuanyi, represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Chief Matthias Ekweremadu, gave the assurance while declaring open the 2019 Sectoral Workshop of FRSC Enugu State Sector Command Special Marshals held in Enugu.

The theme of the workshop is: “The FRSC Special Marshals: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”.

He noted that the state government would improve its partnership with the FRSC to see how road accidents could be further reduced and ensure safer roads in the state, Igbere TV reports.

The governor said: “We also want to partner the FRSC Regular and Special Marshals to ensure effective traffic control as we approach the yuletide.

“As it is well known, Enugu State remains the home of hospitality in the country.

“We expect increased vehicular traffic as visitors, tourists and people that want to have good time troop into the state in their thousands.”

Ugwuanyi, however, lauded the FRSC Special Marshals for their sacrifice and passion to see that Nigerians especially residents of the state were safe on the roads, adding: “You should keep up the good work for humanity.”

The National Coordinator of FRSC Special Marshals, Mr Sini Kwabe, noted that the workshop called for sober reflection and soul searching, adding: “We must find new and effective ways of performing better.

“The work you have volunteered for is a service to humanity and our fatherland as well as ensure that you make our roads safer and achieve the mandate of FRSC,’’ Kwabe said.

FRSC Assistant Corp Marshal in-charge of South-East, Mr Osas Osadabenwen, represented by Deputy Corps Commander, Mr Anthony Ogbodo, advised special marshals to get ready to do the job even in the face of insult from unruly motorists.

“You must be calm and courteous while on the job.

“You should know that the bulk of your work is enlightenment and education of the motoring public and ensure you act with utmost civility,” Osadabenwen said.

Mr Ogbonnaya Kalu, Sector Commander of FRSC Enugu State, said that the workshop was an annual affair meant to refresh the memories of special marshals and help to keep them abreast of new development in the corps.

Kalu noted that special marshals had helped to bridge the gap between the uniform regulars and the public at large, noting that they played prominent roles in traffic management in the state and nationwide.

“Today’s event will equally re-awaken the consciousness of the special marshals in their mandate to impact positively in the motoring public by complementing the efforts of the regular marshals in the Command,” he said.

Highlights of the event were paper presentations on different aspects of road safety job as well as induction of some new special marshals within the Command.

Politics / Anambra Fire: Mob Stopped Us From Accessing Fire Scene – Fire Service by Priscy01(f): 3:24pm On Oct 17, 2019
The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has said that a mob stopped its men from getting to the scene of Wednesday’s fire incident at Ochanja Market, Onitsha, in Anambra.

Spokesperson of the agency, Ugo Huan, said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

“The Federal Fire Service received a call about the fire outbreak around 2.00 p. m.

“The control room at the headquarters in Abuja immediately turned out its nearest station at Asaba, Delta State, to attend to the fire.

“Our men immediately headed to the scene but it was not possible to contend with the heavy traffic at the Niger head bridge, coupled with the behaviour of an angry mob who pelted stones at them.

“Thus, it was not possible for the firefighters to get to the scene and fight the fire in such a hostile environment”, Huan said.

Reports say that no fewer than five persons, including a woman and her child, died in the inferno caused by the explosion of a petrol tanker.

Many buildings and shops were also torched in the disaster, according to reports.

The spokesman said the FFS Controller General, Mr Liman Ibrahim, was deeply saddened by the incident, and had expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.

“The Federal Fire Service is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property, with the procurement of new state-of-the-art firefighting trucks distributed to the 12 zones of the service across the nation.

“The service is always ready to respond to fire outbreaks and other emergencies across the nation.

“It is worthy to note that similar situations in recent past in Sokoto, Uyo, Minna, Ibadan, Osun and Lagos were prevented from escalating to a major disaster by the Federal Fire Service.

“The case of Ochanja market was an unfortunate one, as one will wonder why individuals will want to attack firefighters that came to help put out fire that was threatening lives and ravaging property,” he said.

Huan added that “the service will like to use this opportunity to appeal to Nigerians that in as much as the fire service is prepared and committed to saving of lives and property in emergencies, their support and cooperation is highly needed to do that.”

He further explained that the service remained committed to its mandate of saving lives and property of Nigerians and others residing in the country.

Politics / “Progress Recorded In Curbing Insecurity, Grossly Underreported” – Lai Mohammed by Priscy01(f): 6:38pm On Oct 15, 2019
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says the progress recorded in combating banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping, especially in the North-West zone, is under-reported.

The minister stated this on Tuesday at a special Town Hall Meeting on Security (Banditry, Cattle Rustling and Kidnapping) organised by the ministry in Katsina.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event was attended by the governors of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara, namely Aminu Masari, Aminu Tambuwal and Bello Matawalle as well as Ministers of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola and Defence, Bashir Magashi.

“Here in the North-west, the security challenges – Banditry, Cattle Rustling and Kidnapping – have been unique and daunting.

“The deadly attacks that claimed lives and destroyed property were daily making headline news all over the country.

“At a stage, the situation became so bad in some of the states in the North-west that many felt they were intractable.

“But thanks to the unrelenting efforts of the Federal government, as well as the determination and innovative efforts of the governments of the affected states.

” There has been a remarkable improvement and peace and security are gradually returning to the worst-hit states.

“Unfortunately, the progress that has been made in combating banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping, has not made the kind of
headlines that the security challenges were making at their peak”, Mohammed observed.

The minister reiterated that the cardinal programmes of the Buhari Administration were to tackle insecurity across the country and that the government had faced the challenges posed by it with grit and determination.

He said the federal government was unrelenting in tackling the challenges because, without peace and security, there could be no development.

Mohammed said that the town hall meeting was, therefore, imperative for the Federal Government, working with the affected states, to provide a platform for the governors of the front-line states to highlight the successes they had achieved in their various states.

He said the Ministers would also highlight the efforts that had helped to drastically reduce the level of insecurity in the North West.

Mohammed recalled that town hall meeting was launched in Lagos on April 25 2016, to provide a platform for the Federal Government to regularly give an account of its stewardship to the people and get feedback from them.

He said the 16th edition being held in Katsina, was unique, being the first time that they were having Governors from the APC and the PDP as panellists.

It was gathered that the three governors acknowledged that the security situation in their respective states had improved owing to the supports from the Federal Government, innovative approaches introduced and cooperation of stakeholders.

The governors recommended more funding for security agencies, more collaborations among states, deployment of modern technology, recruitment of more military personnel and policemen, value reorientation and job opportunities for youths to end the scourge.

Politics / President Buhari Inaugurates Industrial Court New Building (Photos) by Priscy01(f): 6:12pm On Sep 30, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja pledged that his administration will continue to adequately fund the judiciary to enable it discharge its responsibilities.

The President also said it is the collective duty of the three arms of government to ensure fair justice delivery and safeguard the rights of all Nigerians.

The President spoke at the commissioning of the annex building of the headquarters of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Area 3, Abuja, which also marked the valedictory session of the President of the Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo.

President Buhari said: ‘‘You will all recall that in 2014, the entire budgetary allocation to the judiciary was N68 billion.

‘‘Today, the judiciary budgetary allocation has gone up to N100 billion. Rest assured that we shall continue to adequately fund the judiciary to ensure it is enabled to discharge its responsibilities.’’

The Nigerian leader used the occasion to appeal to the three arms of government to continue collaborative partnership to ensure that policies, programmes and projects of this administration positively impact the lives of Nigerians.

‘‘Simply put, all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion and politics deserve peaceful and prosperous lives.

‘‘Where these basic rights are trampled upon, Nigerians deserve fair justice delivery.

‘‘It is therefore our collective duty to work collaboratively to ensure that such rights are safeguarded,’’ he said.

Congratulating the President of the Court on his retirement and meritorious service to the country, the President said Justice Adejumo’s numerous contributions are well known and appreciated.

‘‘I am confident his legacy will have a positive impact on those who follow him,’’ he said.

Speaking on the mandate of the Court, the President recalled that it was established as a specialised Court to adjudicate on disputes arising from and relating to labour, industrial and employment matters.

‘‘Indeed, it is the Court in Nigeria that is constitutionally mandated to perform these functions. Thus, the performance of this court directly impacts Nigeria’s ease of doing business indices,’’ he said.

The President noted that the completion of the Annex Building will further enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of justice delivery by the Court.

‘‘Furthermore, the socio-economic impact of this Court cannot be downplayed as it also provides the platform for employees, retirees as well as the dependents of deceased employees to find justice when treated unfairly,’’ he added.

Politics / Poverty: We Must Win The Fight Against Corruption - Buhari by Priscy01(f): 9:15am On Sep 28, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed the resolve of his administration to win the fight against corruption, stressing that there was no alternative to it as it remained critical and essential to ensuring the development of critical sectors in the country, and ensuring the drastic reduction of poverty in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.

“As Africans, we have no choice but to break the back of corruption,” he said.

Buhari, who is the African Union, AU, Anti-Corruption Champion, made the assertion at the High-Level Side-Event organized by the African Union Development Agency and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, AUDA-NEPAD, in collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, which held on September 25, 2019 in New York, United States, on the margins of the 74th United Nations General Assembly, UNGA 74, Igbere TV reports.

Speaking on the theme, “Promotion of international cooperation to combat illicit financial flow and strengthen good practices on assets recovery and return to foster sustainable development”, Buhari expressed great concerns that such massive and illegal loss of assets, resulted in dearth of natural resources, which are enormous in Nigeria, and Africa as a whole.

“That is why our government has made it a war we intend to win, and we will give all it takes to ensure that there is no hiding place for purveyors of corrupt practices who are truly enemies of the people,” he said.

Citing the Tax Justice Network and the International Monetary Fund, he revealed that an estimated $200 billion was being lost yearly by developing countries, due to multinational enterprises not paying taxes in the countries where they made the profit from.

“These flows deplete Africa’s internally generated revenues, foreign exchange earnings, reduce tax revenues, drain natural resources, facilitate corruption and stunt private sector development,” he said, and called for effective international cooperation between African countries and the international community to ensure that illicit financial flows out of the continent was stemmed.

According to Ibrahim Magu, acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the illicit flow of funds, remained a major threat to global peace, requiring urgent measures to nip it in the bud.

“The developing countries of the world are the most hit by its implications as funds that could be used for development are illegally ferried offshore,” he said.

Quoting from a recent report of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, and Trust Africa, he revealed that Nigeria loses between $15 billion and $18 billion annually to illicit financial flows.

He noted that traditional sources of IFFs have now emerged including illegal mining, kidnapping, terrorism, militancy, smuggling, crude oil theft, cybercrime and other forms of organized crimes, with the attendant effects of non achievement of sustainable development goals in the country.

Making reference to the recent judgement in favour of the Process and Industrial Development Limited, P&ID, he said, “The recent one is the international conspiracy to defraud Nigeria of over $9.6billion, which is about one-third of our budget by people who are completely fraudulent”.

According to him, investigations by the EFCC revealed, “There is no legality whatsoever, and we [the Nigerian government] should not even negotiate with them.”

He used the opportunity to call for “unconditional repatriation” of Africa’s stolen wealth and urged all law enforcement agencies around the world to collaborate and have an understanding to ensure that illicit financial flows are stopped.

The High-Level event, also had in attendance President Sahle-Work Zewede of Ethiopia; President Edgar Lungu of Zambia; President of the UNGA, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande; Vice President of the African Union, Quartey Kwesi; Princess Gloria Akobundu, Chief Executive Officer, AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria; along with dignitaries from the European Union, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Namibia, Norway, South Africa, and Nigeria.

Politics / Nigerians Call On Sunday Dare To Help Rescue Siasia’s Mum From Kidnappers by Priscy01(f): 1:32pm On Sep 24, 2019
Nigerians have called on the minister of youth and sports, Sunday dare, to intervene in the case of former Nigeria international, Samson Siasia, whose mother has been held by kidnappers for more than two months.

Igbere TV recall that Beauty Siasia was kidnapped on July 15 in Odoni community, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

She had earlier been kidnapped in November 2015, spending 13 days with her kidnappers until a ransom of about N600,000 was allegedly paid.

Siasia told newsmen early in September that his mother’s kidnappers had not set her free despite receiving N1.5 million ransom.

He said the abductors released his cousin’s mother-in-law, Florence Douanana, 66, and also took in an unnamed person who delivered the money to them.

Nigerians on Twitter have now resorted to bringing Mr Dare, who is currently in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly, into the matter.

Politics / You’re Not Joshua, Buhari Is Not Moses, Fani-kayode Tells Bakare by Priscy01(f): 2:02pm On Sep 23, 2019
Former minister of aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has sent a veiled message to the founder of Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

Bakare, who was Buhari’s running mate in the 2011 presidential election, said during his sermon at his church on Sunday that he would succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

The preacher said he was born for the purpose of governing the country.

“I will succeed Buhari as President of Nigeria, nothing can change it. I am number 16, Buhari is number 15. I never said it to you before. I am saying it now and nothing can change it,” he said.

The cleric’s statement has been received with outrage on social media.

In a tweet on Monday, borrowing from the Bible story of Joshua completing Moses’ work of leading the Israelites to the Promised Land, Mr Fani-Kayode, without mentioning Bakare’s name, said anyone who endorses President Buhari’s policies cannot be described as Joshua.

“Buhari is NOT Moses and NO-ONE that endorses his vicious, divisive and sectional policies can be described as Joshua. He is NOT leading us to the Promise Land, he is leading us to HELL!”

The former minister had in a tweet on September 21 said that Bakare would make a better Vice President than Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

“Rumours abound and if the truth be told @T_Bakare would be a much better VP than @ProfOsinbajo. I may not agree with him on everything but at least he is loyal, he is courageous, he is strong and he would never betray his people and faith. That is more than I can say for Osubande,” he said.

Her friend, Arike, says while praying that Lizzy’s wealth will bring accusations of cocaine smuggling and money rituals.

She also accused the ‘Alakada’ actress of hastily organising a session that shows her childbirth in a hospital.

Lizzy promised that she would continue to come after Toyin until she cautions her followers adding that bloggers had twisted her apology to fans from its intended meaning.

Toyin Abraham countered Anjorin’s claim of having her child in a traditional centre in Nigeria.

In a video made public by Broadway TV on Wednesday, Toyin said she had her baby at Vedic Lifecare Hospital, Lekki, Lagos, after seeing how efficient the clinic was.

“Because I trust you people, I decided to have my baby in Nigeria. I actually travelled but I came back. I said I am coming back, let me have my baby in Nigeria because I want to be around everybody,” she said.

On Monday, lawyers representing Toyin Abraham wrote to Anjorin demanding a public apology for accusing Abraham of cyber-bullying.

Read his full tweets below; “We need the best of the best in government. We need our best brains/clever minds to help Ministers, Senators and even the President get the work of governance done.

Its a shame that we have lost 2 brilliant guys over Twitter madness. First it was Olu Onemola, now Seun Onigbinde.

Young people let hatred and toxic stupidity becloud their judgement.

They abuse intellectuals and troll anyone who dares have a different opinion. Its a shame really. Big big shame what is going on.

Seun Onigbinde has ran a brand that manages projects running into millions of dollars on a yearly basis for the last 5 or 6 years.

He is CLEARLY competent to advice a Minister. Now that he has resigned, I hope he won't be replaced by an incompetent and unexposed yes man.”
