Politics / Senate Panel Requests More Time To Investigate Senate Elisha Abbo Over Assault by Priscy01(f): 1:33pm On Jul 17, 2019
The Senate Ad hoc Committee investigating the allegation of assault brought against Senator Elisha Abbo has requested for more time to complete its assignment, Igbere TV reports.

The panel chairman, Senator Sam Egwu made the request during plenary on Wednesday relying on Order 43 of the Senate.

Egwu, a former governor of Ebonyi State, said additional time would enable his committee gather more information to diligently do the investigation and report back to the Senate.

He decried the refusal of some of those who appeared before the panel to furnish it with needed information, on the fear of prejudice of the court.

According to him, the victim, her lawyers, and Mr Abbo did not speak on the matter because the case was before the case.

Egwu also said that the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Ciroma, who appeared before the panel gave a similar excuse.

“In the course of the investigation, most of those invited appeared but said the matter is before the court, fearing the contempt of the Court,” he said.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, before granting the request, said their assignment was different from what the court was currently trying the senator for.

The Senate had on July 3 set up a 6-man panel to investigate Abbo over alleged assault on a woman at a sex shop in Abuja.

The panel was given two weeks to submit its report.

Politics / "INEC, Worst Thing To Have Happened Since Lord Lugard When Politicians Lose" by Priscy01(f): 8:25am On Jul 09, 2019
The national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commissioner (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, said politicians who praise INEC when elections favour them turn around to cast aspersion on the commission when things do not go their way.

It was reported that while speaking at a meeting with editors in Lagos on Monday, July 8, Yakubu said INEC would keep on playing its role as an umpire.

Igbere TV gathered that he said the commission chose to engage journalists in order to have their input on the steps that INEC needs to take to strengthen the electoral process.

He said the INEC would continue to do its best but its concern is where the trust is reduced by people who will say the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria since 1914 is INEC when they win an election but when they don’t win, they say it’s the worst thing that happened since Lord Lugard.

He said: "There is a story I love to tell. I am just in love with this story. There was a time that we conducted a gubernatorial election, I won’t tell you the state. I monitored it from Abuja via live television. One of the candidates lamented after casting his vote. The smart card reader couldn’t pick his biometric immediately.

“He tried the second time, he tried the third time, it won’t work. He was eventually accredited and he voted. He came with his wife; his wife had no problem whatsoever but immediately after voting, he turned to the cameramen and started abusing INEC. He said this INEC will crash our democracy, he complained about the card readers not working.

He said the candidate alleged that INEC was creating an impression that Nigeria is a nation of scammers, adding that the commission never responded and continued with the job.

"We concluded the election and perhaps to his surprise, he was declared winner. So when the certificate of return was presented to him, I watched the live coverage on television again.

"Immediately he collected the certificate and grabbed the microphone, one of the first things he said was that the best thing that ever happened to our election is the card reader. So, when someone wins an election, our election management board is the best. When someone loses an election, our election management board is the worst thing that ever happened to the country," he said.

Yakubu said INEC needed the support of stakeholders, especially the media to succeed.

He said some of the recommendations made by foreign and local observers could not be implemented by the commission alone.

“Many national and international observer have made recommendations but some of these recommendations cannot be implemented by INEC alone. They require collaboration with others and in many cases, amendment to electoral legal framework which is actually beyond INEC itself, it has to go the national assembly.

“Let me give you an example, the EU made 30 recommendations to improve the electoral processes in Nigeria. Out of which only nine can be implemented by INEC by administrative action. The Commonwealth made 24 recommendations out of which only eight can be implemented by INEC by administrative action," he added.

Igbere TV had previously reported that Yakubu said he would speak very soon on the server controversy trailing the conduct and outcome of the 2019 general elections.

Politics / Oby Ezekwesili Blasts Senator Elisha Abbo Who Assaulted Lady by Priscy01(f): 10:54am On Jul 03, 2019
Former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, has knocked Senator Elisha Abbo and his orderly for assaulting a woman in an Abuja sex shop, Igbere TV reports.

A video of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker from Adamawa State hitting the lady online was shared on Tuesday.

Mrs Ezekwesili tweeted on Wednesday that she had not been able to shake off the angst that the assault video evokes.

She said she was more angered by the fact that Mr Abbo felt ‘entitled to adoration from those ladies’.

“Simply unable to shake-off the deep angst that this video of a primitively violent certain Senator Elisha Abbo evokes. How far have we fallen that such hooliganism & extreme abuse of status could happen before a Nigerian Police officer who obeyed the valiant & arrested the Victim?

“Know what worsened my angst? The fact that Abbo — an obvious ‘Onye Nkilika Mmadu’ felt entitled to adoration from those ladies. He went ballistics &criminally physically and verbally assaulted the two ladies while a desecrated @PoliceNG officer carried out his own bidding. Kai!” the former education minister said.

In the video, Abbo, 41, on May 11 assaulted a woman, said to be a nursing mother after she defended an attendant at a intimacy gadget shop who was about to be arrested on claims that she had insulted the lawmaker.

The senator was said to have returned to the store to warn against releasing the footage of the incident.

Since the case was reported on May 14 at the Maitama Area Command Headquarters on Nile Street, the police have been reportedly negligent on the matter.

Politics / "Imo IGR Is Shrouded In Scam" – Gov. Ihedioha Says by Priscy01(f): 4:04pm On Jul 02, 2019
Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has said that the internally generated revenue (IGR) system in the state is shrouded in scam, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Mr Ihedioha said on Tuesday when he paid state workers an unscheduled visit that he would need their help in generating revenue for the state to meet its obligations.

Ihedioha, who was accompanied by his deputy, Gerald Ironna, and Secretary to the State Government, Uche Onyeaguocha, said: “Preliminary findings show that our source of revenue in the state is thin. Apart from FAAC, the only source of revenue is Internally Generated Revenue and I am certain that you have a duty to help the government generate revenue.

“IGR in Imo is shrouded in scam. There were myriads of concessions; we have been trying to find out whether those concessions were made in public interest and if they are of any economic benefits to the state.”

Ihedioha assured the workers that he would pay full salaries, away from the 80 per cent paid by the last administration.

“My government will be ready and willing to pay your full salaries but you have to match productivity with output. I am aware that our indebtedness is huge and I have been notified that there will be huge deduction from July.

“I am ready to do the adjustment to your salaries but you have to tell me how we can make savings for it. We decided to undertake this visit to have a firsthand appraisal of the state of the facilities in this complex.

“As civil servants, you need to be paid. I am of the belief that a worker deserves his wages but the money has to be generated. There is need for justification for the money we pay to you,” he said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has announced that the House would commence electronic voting as from July 3, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Mr Gbajabiamila made the announcement on Tuesday at the commencement of plenary after two weeks of recess.

The e-voting system, he said, would only be applied on some selected national issues to determine accuracy.

The speaker said the system would ensure transparency and accountability as it would determine who voted for or against any national issue.

“Progress has been made and by tomorrow it will be fully operational,” Gbajabiamila said.

He also announced that the surroundings of the National Assembly Complex have been enabled with Wi-Fi connection to allow legislators carry out research from all locations.

Politics / Atiku To Present 400 Witnesses Within 14 Days To Prove Buhari Didn't Win by Priscy01(f): 10:17pm On Jul 01, 2019
Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar has told the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Monday that he and his party want to call 400 witnesses to prove their petition challenging the victory of President Buhari, and his All Progressives Congress, at the February 23 poll, Igbere TV reports.

The process is expected to last 14 days. The Justice Mohammed Garba-led five-man tribunal said the 14 days period is prescribed under paragraph 16(3) of the First Schedule to the Electoral Act.

In response, the lead counsel for the petitioners, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), said as much as his clients had proposed 400 witnesses, they “intend to call as many witnesses as possible within the prescribed time.

What we have not agreed on yet is whether we will be given opportunity or isolate the preliminary objection from the main address. We are also not too sure on the length of time of cross-examination.”

Justice Garba said the length of time for cross-examination “will be dependent on the circumstances and facts”, particularly the number of witnesses parties to the case intended to call. He added, “But we shall set a template for cross-examination which will not be sacrosanct. “Like I said it will be dependent on the circumstances.”

Uzoukwu later applied for a 30-minutes stand-down to enable parties to the case to resolve on other issues that would arise during the substantive hearing of the petition. The tribunal approved the application.

Politics / Buratai Hosts Troops To Durban In Borno by Priscy01(f): 1:50pm On Jun 28, 2019
Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has hosted troops in the frontline to a colourful durbar as part of measures to boost their morale, Igbere TV reports.

Buratai had criticised some of the soldiers, calling them ‘bad eggs’ who were influencing others not to fight with their hearts against terrorism.

Army spokesman, Sagir Musa, in a statement said Buratai hosted 300 troops and answered their questions in an effort to encourage them.

Musa said Buratai commended the troops for their gallantry and courage, asking them to scale up their onslaughts against Boko Haram terrorists in the northeast.

“In line with the extant Military Traditions, Customs and Ethics, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai has held a dubar with troops of Theatre Command Operation LAFIYA DOLE at the Command and Control Center in Maiduguri, Borno State on 26 June 2019.

“A total of 300 troops drawn from the various Units and Formations across the Theatre Command attended the occasion, where, as a rare privilege, troops freely interacted one-on-one with the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen TY Buratai.

“At the event, without any restriction, troops were allowed to sincerely bare their minds on issues bothering them either as a group or individually, especially on professional matters like administration, welfare, logistics and general operational situation including progress and challenges.

“Few of the major highlights of the durbar session include the need for more patriotism, professionalism as well as the need to reappraise, reorganize and re-strategize to boost the operation and defeat the insurgency/terrorism,” Musa said.

The spokesman said the troops had dinner with Buratai and they were ‘elated, visibly happy’.

He said the issues that were discussed at the occasion would be communicated to the rest of the troops in the frontline by the 300 representatives.

Politics / I Did Not Vote For Senator Akpabio – Aide Confesses To Tribunal by Priscy01(f): 4:21am On Jun 27, 2019
Mr Anietie Ekong, a media aide to the former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has told the National Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Uyo that he did not vote for the Senator in the National Assembly elections held in February 2019, Igbere TV reports.

According to reports gathered by Igbere TV, Ekong also failed to authenticate the winner in Senator Akpabio’s unit despite possessing video documentaries of alleged elections, claiming he left the venue with his boss before collation and announcement of results.

Anietie Ekong, testifying as PW17 in Tuesday, admitted under cross examination that he is a registered voter in Ward 13, Oruk Anam local government area, but never went to vote since he was busy with the Senator at his Unit in Ukana West of Essien Udim local government area throughout the period of the elections.

The media aide who was subpoenaed to appear before tribunal despite being a personal staff of the petitioner, brought DVDs and audio recordings which were watched by the tribunal.

However, Anietie Ekong admitted that he acted illegally as he was neither an agent and not an accredited election observer at Unit 9, Ukana West, told the tribunal he edited a Facebook video recording into a five minutes video he tendered.

In the video, the former senator is shown accompanied by his wife Unoma and some security officials and is later seen casting votes.

Reacting to the video, the Counsel to the PDP , Solomon Umoh SAN, asserted that Mr Ekong edited an alleged five hour video into 5 minutes distorting some critical information.

“Because you compressed the video, there are cut ins”, Umoh further argued

“Please can you show us where Chief Akpabio was accredited to vote?

“In this video Senator Akpabio wore a long sleeve on arrival but the man you have shown us in the video being accredited wore a short sleeve. Is that not ridiculous,” Umoh exclaimed.

Pointing out that without the use of a professional camera, it was difficult to clearly confirm which particular election was being shown in the video, the INEC Counsel U.U.Njoku argued that the petitioner had voted during the general elections in the same unit in 2011 and 2015.

“You will also agree that in 2019, other than the presidential and National Assembly elections, the Governorship election also held at the same polling unit”

“Yes my Lord”, Anietie Ekong confirmed.

On his part, Counsel to 3rd, 4th, and 5th respondents, Robert Emukpueruo said “the complete absence of results, either carbon copy or certified true copy for this polling unit is a negation of this video you have shown us”.

“In this video, would you show us where results were declared?” – Robert asked.

Anietie Ekong who appeared at a loss muttered, “I left with my Boss to attend to international journalists at my Boss’ house”

“So you were not present at the polling unit throughout the duration of the voting process?” Robert again asked.

“I was not present my Lord ” – Anietie Ekong added.

Politics / Court Approves NBC, Ait/raypower’s Settlement Terms As Judgement by Priscy01(f): 5:49pm On Jun 26, 2019
A Federal High Court in Abuja has adopted as its judgement, the terms of settlement reached by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Daar Communications Plc, owners of AIT and Raypower FM, over their recent dispute, Igbere TV reports.

The NBC had seized the national broadcast licences of the media organisations.

Justice Inyang Ekwo ruled on Wednesday as “consent judgement” after Daar Communications’ lawyer adopted the terms of settlement dated June 20, 2019, and filed before the court on June 25.

Ekwo adopted all the seven terms in the agreement consented to without any alteration as the court’s judgement.

Among other items listed in his judgement, the judge ordered that Daar Communications should furnish the NBC “with a concrete and realistic proposal” and ensure prompt payment of the outstanding licence renewal fee.

He also ordered the company to ensure balance in its news coverage, especially political commentary on its stations across the country.

“That the plaintiff shall take full editorial responsibility for the use of content sourced from social media and all/any other outlets.

“That the plaintiff shall ensure that all programmes transmitted on its TV/Radio stations across the country comply with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, the National Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap. NH, Laws of the Federation, 2004 and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code as may be in force or/and as amended from time to time.

“That the Terms of Settlement tiled and adopted is hereby entered as judgement of this court in this suit.

“That each of the parties shall bear its own costs of this action,” Ekwo said.

The parties had reached an out-of-court settlement in a meeting on June 9 coordinated by the President of the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), Nduka Obaigbena.

Some of those who attended were Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NBC, Ishaq Modibbo-Kawu; Founder and Chairman Emeritus of DAAR Communications, Raymond Dokpesi, among others.
