WORKING HARD VERSUS WORKING SMART

“You can work hard. But if you don’t work smart, you will work for the rest of your life.”

Abraham Lincoln once said, “if I had six hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend the first four hours to sharpening the saw”. When the saw is sharp, it will cut down the tree faster and with less labour, but when the saw is blunt, it will take a longer time to cut down the tree and with more labour. Many people are working hard but not working smart. They keep wondering why things are not happening the way it should after putting in so much hard work. The answer is simple. They are working hard but not working smart.

So often, people are working hard at the wrong thing. Working on the right thing is probably more important than working hard. Don’t wait for luck to knock on your door. Work smart such that the luck waits in a queue at your door step. Working smart means to truly know yourself and your strengths, so you can build a productivity flow and network around you to fill in your weak spots and in turn, reach goals in the most efficient way possible. Working smart is finding where your strength lies or the area where you are naturally gifted or talented and concentrate on building a career around it. If your talent is in music and you decide to pursue a career in sport where you are not naturally gifted, you will work hard for a long time and achieve little or nothing. But if you concentrate on your strength and pursue a career in that area, your star will shine in no longer time. For a student, if you are good in the art and decide to join science class because the career prospect there is lucrative, you will end up frustrated. Be wise, go where your strength lies and build on it while you work on your weak areas. That is smart work.

Let me give you a clear understanding of working hard and working smart. Working hard is using a manual typewriter to process documents while working smart is using a computer system to process document which is faster and more efficient. Working hard is using manual labour to cultivate a piece of land for farming while working smart is using tractor and other mechanized way of farming. Working hard is trying to do everything by yourself. Working smart is delegating your task to others and training them to do it the way you would. It will save you time, energy and make you more productive and achieve a lot within a short time frame.

Take time to study what you are currently doing as a business person, employer of labour, student, employee and even house wife. Are you working hard or working smart? There must be a way to do what you are currently doing better, faster and more efficiently. Find it and start working smart. You will achieve more, earn more, save time, save energy and be more productive. Think about it.

ARE YOU A PLUS OR A MINUS?

There are people you meet in life that are energy drainers and dream killers. When they come into your life, they sabotage, disrupt, frustrate and mess up things for you. They find fault in everything you do, gossip and pull you down before others, refuse to help you when the need arise and even take from you the little you have. They don’t have any good thing to offer. Rather they are an embodiment of trouble, full of bitterness and hatred. These type of people are called MINUS. On the other hand, there are people that come into your life and add value to your life. They help you to achieve your goals and fulfill destiny. They do not judge you or see any reason to pull you down. They are more interested in you becoming a better version of yourself. They can go to any lenght to make life better for you. These are the people we call PLUS.

You should aim at adding value to the lives of everyone you come in contact with. The greatest legacy anyone can leave behind is to positively impact the lives of others. Whenever you add value to other people’s lives, you are unknowingly leaving footprints on the sands of time that live on, even after your demise. You add value to lives by helping people to succeed, by helping people to achieve their dreams, by making life easy for people and by giving to people from what you have whenever the need arise. The more we put helping others first and focus on adding value to other people’s lives, the more abundance flows our way. It’s a win win all the way around.

Success is when you add value to yourself. Significance is when you add value to others. Look at your life now, are you significant to anyone at all? Wherever we find ourselves, we should aim to be valuable by giving what we have (our time, skill, talent, resources) to make life more meaningful to those around. If you are in an organisation, be a blessing to that organisation and not a curse. Be a problem solver and not a problem creator. Let your impact be felt. Go out of your way to make things work for that organisation. You may be a leader or a follower in that organisation, it does not matter. What matters is the impacting you are making. People should miss you and remember you for good when you are not there anymore. A vacuum should be created when you leave.

To add value to others, you must first value others. If you do not genuinely love people, you cannot add value to their lives neither can you help them when the need arise. You have to learn to like people irrespective of their behaviour, attitude, religion, and orientation. That’s only when you will truly value them. Don’t be a minus in the lives of people you come in contact with or organisation you find yourself. Don’t be the fault finder, trouble maker or obstacle in the wheel of progress. When you live your life in alignment with a purpose that is centered on selflessly adding value for others, opportunities become abundant and your life becomes fulfilled.

True success in life is when you help other people to succeed and when you help them to achieve their dreams. Don’t forget that what you give others will come back to you. Give value and it will come back to you. Help others and help will come to you. Be the reason why someone is happy and happiness will never leave you. I must state it here that you really cannot give what you don’t have. You cannot give value when you don’t have it. So take time to become valuable by investing in yourself, in skills and knowledge. When you are valuable, resources will be attracted to you and when you have resources at your disposal, that’s when you can make contributions in the lives of others. Be valuable so that you can add value to others as the need arise.

Competence is the ability to do something successfully or efficiently. Inorder for you to enjoy good success in whatever you are doing, you have to be competent. Seeth thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before kings and not ordinary men. Diligence is a combination of competence and hardwork. If you are not skilled or properly trained to do a particular job, you cannot excel in it, you will not go far in it, people will not applaud you and you will not be a reference point and enjoy success. What is it that you are currently doing? Are you a student, an employee or a business owner? Become competent in what you are doing.

As a student, you cannot make good grades and excel in your studies if you don’t possess good study skills. There are skills required for you to study effectively and make good grades. When you discover these skills and start applying them, your grades will improve and before you know it, you will be at the top of your class. That is competence. Students try to find out what it takes to become a competent student. You have to learn and master studying skills (listening, note taking, writing and reading skills), use of library skills, exam preparation skills and skills for answering various types of examination questions. When you are competent in these skills, you will sure be on your way to making first class grade.

Life is not difficult as we make it look. Everything answers to principles. When you understand the principles for success in whatever you are doing and apply those principles, you will surely succeed irrespective of the circumstances surrounding you. That itself is competence. Are you are business person or a tradesman? Competence is the key to your success. Get to know your trade very well. Improve your skill by learning and unlearning. Constant training and learning will give you an edge over your competitor. You cannot know it all. What you knew yesterday cannot help you to favourably compete in today’s business arena. Things are changing drastically. Ideas and innovations are springing up daily with the speed of light. You have to follow the trend to remain relevant or else you will soon become outdated and people will stop patronizing you.

When you are truly competent at what you do, you will be on top of your field and the world will celebrate you. Say no to mediocrity in any form. Add value to yourself by investing in knowledge and skill development. When you do, success will become your next door neighbour. Success demands a high level of logistical and organisation competence. Love what you do. Get good at it. Competence is a rare commodity in this day and age. Get it at all cost for your own profiting. Competence is a greate creator of confidence that will enable you to succeed in the market square.
