It is estimated globally that 150 million girls and 73 million boys under the age of 18 have experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual violence involving physical contact. Yet, it is also estimated that much abuse is underreported either because the victims are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, or the adults who observe or suspect the abuse are unsure of what to do.

Unlike other public health issues, child abuse and neglect prevention has no “vaccine” or single solution to address this complex issue. It requires a multifaceted approach that shifts the focus to upstream solutions which prevent child abuse from happening in the first place.

The CTCD Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference is aimed at creating awareness on the societal issue of child abuse. The goal is to TEACH children and young people how to effectively prevent child abuse with focus on child sexual abuse because it is rightly said that the best way to protect children from sexual abuse is to empower them to protect themselves, AND TRAIN parents, educators, public officials, faith-based and community organisations and other stakeholders that works directly and indirectly with children HOW to effectively prevent child abuse from occurring and what to do if it occurs.

Now in its 2nd year, the CTCD Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference will be held at Oyesina Hall, Oke-Bola, Ibadan on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th November, 2021 and will coincide with the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse (November 19) and the Universal Children’s Day (November 20). The theme for this year’s conference is: PROTECTING CHILDREN, PROMOTING HEALTHY FAMILIES, AND PRESERVING COMMUNITIES. This theme demonstrates our hope that every child will be loved and protected. It confirms our goal of a healthy family for every child in which to grow and thrive. As the building block of society, the family serves as the basis for strong neighbourhoods and supportive communities.

Childhood is a formative time, and abuse can have devastating long-term effects on young lives. In order to provide a safe environment for our young people, parents must work to protect their children from the dangers that threaten them. Family members, educators, public officials, and faith-based and community organisations all play important roles in helping to ensure that children are safe and can grow surrounded by love and stability.

Participants of the CTCD Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference include: students in private and public primary and secondary schools, teachers, care givers, parents, public officials, faith-based organisation, community organisations and other stakeholders who are involved in working directly or indirectly with children.

The CTCD Annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference will consist of session themes and training workshops. The program will span across the latest innovations, developments and best practices in the area of child protection, child welfare and child abuse prevention. The event will also feature:
* A Walk Against Child Abuse Menace. 1-5km walk within Ibadan metropolis to create awareness on child abuse
* Inter-Secondary School Child Abuse Awareness Competition (the categories include: Essay writing, Photography, Drawing, Dance, Poetry and Song Composition on Child Abuse and Neglect).
* Child Development in Nigeria Merit Award (CHIDINMA). This is an award instituted to reward human accomplishment in different areas of child development. It is meant to encourage Nigerians of achievement and potential to do more in child protection and development.

The Conference is hosted by the Centre for Total Child Development, an NGO that advocate, advance and promote the rights and welfare of children and young people in the society. OUR VISION is to help children and young people actualize their potential by promoting and protecting their rights and welfare. The Centre for Total Child Development, an NGO with a mission to improve the quality of life of children and young people by creating and supporting programmes that bring about self-actualization and total development, was conferred the prestigious award by the Centre for Leadership and Good Governance International at it’s Public Lecture and Awards in commemoration of the United Nations World Youth Skills Day 2021 themed “Re-Imagining Youth Skills Post Pandemic” held on Thursday, 15th July, 2021.

The Award was conceptualized to honour, award and thank individuals and organisations for their excellent contributions to skills acquisition and development of young people in the society and their significant contributions to eradication of poverty by equipping young people with relevant skills that will bring about self-reliance and financial independence.

The Public Lecture & Award which had Dr. Gbola Adetunji (MD/CEO, Odunlakin Specialist Hospital and former Commissioner for Health, Oyo State) as the Chairman, Ambassador Romoke Ayinde (CEO, Kaynon Lee Group of Companies) as the Guest of Honour/Mother of the day, Dr. Kunle Awotiku (MD/CE), Uniplan Integrated Services) as the Guest Speaker, Mr. Toyese Oyebode (King Fm, Ibadan) as the Director of Programmes and other notable personalities on the platform was held at the Event Hall, Bolmor Polytechnic, Ibadan, Nigeria.

Centre for Total Child Development (CTCD) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization established to advocate, advance and promote the rights and welfare of children and young people in the society. One of the areas we have seriously paid attention to is human capacity development in terms of skill acquisition and vocational training. Through our skill acquisition program, we train young people in vocational skills like computer application, photography, videography, graphics design and makeup artistry. We share the vision of the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) which are expressed as: Value re-orientation, poverty eradication, job creation, wealth generation and using education to empower the citizens. So our focus is to eradicate poverty through empowering young people with vocational skills that will help them to create jobs and generate wealth.

Apart from our vocational and entrepreneurship training for young people, we also empower students with life skills through our Road2Success Child Development Programme (a capacity building training workshop for students in secondary schools). This workshop covers the following areas: Skills for my future, Career Exploration, Study and Exam Success Skills, Social Skills and Etiquette, Body Image and Self Esteem, Child Sexual Abuse Prevention and Sex Education. Since 2019, we have trained over 5,000 students and still counting in public and private secondary schools in Ibadan.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

The Child Development in Nigeria Merit Award (CHIDINMA) is Nigeria’s biggest child development award project. It focuses on honouring individuals and organisations that have made and are making positive impact in the lives of children and young people in the society.

Now in its 2nd year, these awards were instituted to reward human accomplishment in different areas of child development. It is meant to encourage Nigerians of achievement and potential to do more in child development, child welfare and child protection. The most unique features of the Awards is that they cut through the spectrum of society. Everyone is recognized as long as they are making remarkable impact in the lives of children and young people through their jobs, business, professional services, projects or policies. Even so, the deciding factors in the making of the nominations into the awards are: excellence, achievement, hardwork, innovation, creativity and passion for child welfare, child protection and development.

It is in the spirit of encouraging all-round child development and seeking to accomplish its vision and mission that the Centre for Total Child Development (CTCD) established the Child Development in Nigeria Merit Awards. Today, the awards which are more generally referred to by their abbreviation of CHIDINMA, are believed to be the most prestigious awards in the area of child development.

The CHIDINMA enjoy recognition in various circles and have been widely acclaimed for their integrity and national outlook. The awards draw recipients from all the geographic parts of Nigeria and field of human calling with focus on the development of the Nigerian child. Child abuse and neglect – particularly sexual abuse – are among the world’s most serious concerns, with millions of cases reported to various children’s protective service organizations each year. It is estimated globally that 150 million girls and 73 million boys under the age of 18 have experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual violence involving physical contact (International Center for Assault Prevention). Yet, it is also estimated that much abuse is underreported either because the victims are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, or the adults who observe or suspect the abuse are unsure of what to do.

Schools have a moral as well as legal duty to safeguard the welfare of their students, as well as those children using their facilities or involved with their programs and activities. This child protection and safeguarding training sets forth the steps that faculty, staff, students, volunteers, contractors, and consultants are required to take to minimize the threat of child abuse in their schools and to respond promptly and effectively should abuse be observed, suspected, or disclosed.

The child protection and safeguarding training addresses the following essential components of a comprehensive Child Protection Program:
1. Recognizing, responding to, and reporting allegations and suspicions of child abuse and neglect.
2. Screening and selecting staff, faculty, and volunteers.
3. Training and education about child sexual abuse prevention.
4. A Code of Conduct that guides interactions between adults and children.
5. Ensuring safe environments and practices.
6. Connecting to local authority and resources.

OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING

* Assist schools in creating a child protection and safeguarding policy and procedure that is appropriate and applicable to all standard schools in their local setting;

* Provide all of the necessary definitions and assessment tools for clear identification and recognition of abuse/neglect situations;

* Ensure that prompt and adequate assistance is provided to a child in need of special care and protection;

* Define procedures for staff members and establish clear reporting guidelines and mechanisms;

* Outline processes and protocols for schools in connecting to their local community, and to agencies for child protection support; and

* Provide sample personal safety/abuse prevention lessons, curriculum modules, and resources to educate both adults and children about the dangers of child maltreatment, its recognition, and its prevention.
