Brands like Nokia, Tecno, Samsung should be included during such post. Camon X and Canon X pro is now the talk of town. Nokia 7 is something else...and yet non was mention...

A new lawsuit accusing Google of tracking people’s locations against their will has served as a reminder that every movement of most smartphone users is being recorded, often without their knowledge. The California man who filed the suit claims that the tech behemoth continued to track the whereabouts of Android smartphone users even after they turned off “location history”. But the history of geolocation and the privacy issues it raises are as old as the mobile phone itself. Early days Before smartphones arrived more than a decade ago, it was still possible to use geolocation. Mobile phones constantly connect to local antenna towers, and by triangulating the signals the user can be found — as Jeff Goldblum illustrated in the 1996 movie “Independence Day”. However smartphones brought about a far simpler way to track people: GPS. GPS revolution After the release of the first iPhone revolutionised the industry in 2007, GPS — Global Positioning System using satellites — became prevalent, and it is now included on all smartphones. Most apps now use location tracking, and not just for obvious purposes like maps and transport. It’s also used for dating, food delivery and gaming, such as Pokemon Go, which became hugely if briefly popular across the world in 2016. Trackers on 75% of apps As the popularity of apps using geolocations grows, so does their money-making potential. For example, when tourists use their phone to explore, they can be targeted with advertising not just from the country they are in but also the city and even the street they are standing on. A 2014 study by CNIL, the French government’s techonology consumer protection body, showed that between a quarter to a third of apps had access to the phone’s location. By 2017, a study by Yale University found that three-quarters of Android apps contained trackers — usually containing advertising. The CNIL study also found that some apps tracked the phone’s location more than a million times over a three-month period — accessing the information about once per minute. Even flashlight apps The new Google lawsuit is far from the first time privacy concerns have been raised over geolocation. In 2011 fellow tech giant Apple faced a lawsuit over location tracking on its ubiquitous iPhones and iPads. And there are also national security concerns. In July of this year, researchers found that the fitness app Polar had revealed sensitive data on military and intelligence personnel from 69 countries. The app later disabled the function. Just months before another health app, Strava, was found to have showed potentially sensitive information about US and allied forces around the world. But the problem includes apps that don’t even need to track the users’ location. Some simple flashlight apps have been discovered to have been secretly sharing location information. https://www.channelstv.com/2018/08/21/your-smartphone-is-likely-tracking-your-location/ https://www.channelstv.com/2018/08/21/google-sued-for-unwanted-tracking-of-phone-locations/

The Nigerian government is planning to distribute the next batch of loot from Swiss Authorities recovered from former military Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha. The presidency wants to share the recovered $321 million to vulnerable families in the country and according to the BBC, around 300,000 households are expected to get $14 (₦5,000) from July 2018. Irrespective of the seeming good intention of the government, considering that this will be a nationwide exercise, how efficient are the modalities in place to achieve the said goal? Only 40% of Nigerian adults are banked, this means there’s a high possibility these targeted households are out of the financial system. How then will they be reached? In a tweet, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Digital/New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi revealed that the Swiss government insisted on Nigeria adhering to certain conditions before the release of the funds, one of which is that the money would be spent on the Cash Transfer to vulnerable households. Another condition to release the funds is that World Bank will oversee the disbursement. At $14 monthly for 300,000 households which equals $4.2 million, the total fund will last 76 months, not considering the cost that may be associated with the distribution. The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo affirmed that beneficiaries of the monthly payment would be determined from a register that’s being developed. Osinbajo who was represented at the launching of the Monitoring of Recovered Assets through Transparency and Accountability project by the president’s Special Adviser on Social Protection, Mrs Maryam Uwais revealed that the register would have captured the entire country by year-end. The register is expected to have beneficiaries’ telephone number and pictures captured which only few devices have nice camera quality e.g Tecno, etc. (see picture for camera quality.) The distribution is expected to be powered by a network of agents as Uwais said commercial banks backed down from the project on the basis that biometric registration is expensive. Also, how feasible will this new biometric exercise be?The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) would have been of great impact in identifying the target populace but it’s yet to deliver on its mission for a sustainable world-class identity management solution. The biometric registration exercise by NIMC has been on for a couple of years and is yet to come up with a complete database of Nigerians. Will this be different on the notion that the target audience is just 300,000 as against the total adult population that NIMC is targeting? According to The Guardian, more than ₦45 billion ($12 million) was spent on the Bank Verification Number (BVN) registration exercise. Irrespective of the number of the targeted populace, it would probably require similar infrastructure since it’s also a nationwide exercise. From a positive perspective, this also means the 774 local governments in Nigeria can serve as collection points in as much as the cost of distribution would not be higher than the monthly stipend for targeted households. Basic mobile transactions are another option to consider. (As seen in pic 2) There are currently players in the financial industry that allow fund transfer to a telephone mobile which can be cashed from an agent or via the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) using cardless withdrawal features. Some quarters have been calling on the federal government to commit the funds to developmental projects that would have an impact on the general public. With questions around the sustainability and the best disbursement methods, a developmental project might just be the best option. In Q2 2018, Nigerian startups raised a total funding of $73.6 million. Download our report to find out more. https://techpoint.ng/2018/07/18/sharing-recovered-321m-abacha-loot/
