IkpuMmadu:
Contact with European traders

Thus, even before the first European contacts in the 16th century, the Igbo were already the focus of a network of trading relationships that extended outward from the Niger Delta. European traders became integrated into this trade network, thereby enabling the Igbo to emerge as valued middlemen in the slave trade:

The peoples of south-eastern Nigeria have been involved in trade for as long as there are any records. The archaeological sites at Igbo-Ukwu and other evidence reveal long distance trade in metal and beads, as well as regional trade in salt, cloth, and beads at an early date. The lower Niger River and its Delta featured prominently in this early trade, and evidence is offered to suggest a continuity in the basic modes of trade on the lower Niger from c. A.D. 1500 to the mid-nineteenth century. An attempt to sketch the basic economic institutions of the Igbo hinterland before the height of the slave trade stresses regional trading networks in salt, cloth, and metal, the use of currencies, and a nexus of religious and economic institutions and persons. It is argued that while the growth of the slave trade appears to have been handled without major changes in the overall patterns of trade along the lower Niger, in the Igbo hinterland a new marketing ‘grid’, dominated by the Arochuku traders, was created using the pre-existent regional trading networks and religious values as a base. (Northrop, 1972)

British colonial rule

Great Britain took over Nigeria initially as part of its effort to outlaw the slave trade. Lagos was annexed in 1861 and a sphere of influence over the country was recognized in 1885 at the Berlin Conference, although a protectorate would not be proclaimed until 1901.

This new political environment favored the Igbo, whose initiative, self-discipline, and future orientation predisposed them to succeed not only in their homeland but also elsewhere in Nigeria, where they soon became dominant as merchants and civil servants. They thus took on a role like that of middleman minorities elsewhere in the empire, such as the Parsis in western India, the Chinese in Malaya, and the South Asians in East Africa. By the 1930s, one Igbo boasted that “the Ibo domination of Nigeria is a matter of time” (Ibrahim, 2000, p. 56). This trend even affected the army. By independence, 24 of the 52 senior army officers of the rank of major and above were Igbos (Ibrahim, 2000,p. 55).

This dominance led to jealousy among Nigerians in the north and west, who accused the Igbo of unfair business practices:

In the private sector they [the Hausa Muslims] are open to the exploitation of the Ibo control of the modern sector of private business activities. Ibos fix prices unilaterally by which Hausa money is siphoned daily. The Hausa are reduced to utter poverty and a large percentage of them rendered street beggars. (quoted in Ibrahim, 2000, p. 52)

The superior Igbo achievement on GCSEs is not new and has been noted in studies that came before the recent media discovery of African performance. A 2007 report on “case study” model schools in Lambeth also included a rare disclosure of specified Igbo performance (recorded as Ibo in the table below) and it confirms that Igbos have been performing exceptionally well for a long time (5 + A*-C GCSEs); in fact, it is difficult to find a time when they ever performed below British whites. (Chisala, 2015)

The Igbo have long been known as achievers, particularly in business. Whereas trade is largely women’s work in the rest of West Africa, it is dominated by Igbo of both sexes in Nigeria.

[...] In study after study, it has been documented that the Ibo, through conflict and mobility, have been very successful in enterprise. Indeed, a major study argued that the Ibo have a very high need for achievement in the business world. Still another study showed that the majority of entrepreneurs in the sample were Ibo.(Butler, 1997, p. 178)

Sabino and Hall (1999) describe them as being “competitive, individualistic, status-conscious, antiauthoritarian, pragmatic, and practical—a people with a strongly developed commercial sense.” In colonial-era literature, they were often called “the Jews of West Africa” (see note).

Prehistory

How did the Igbo become so entrepreneurial? It’s possible that their location in the Niger Delta predisposed them to be go-betweens in trade between coastal and interior peoples. Similar assemblages of glass beads, many of Egyptian origin and dating to the 9th and 14th centuries, have been recovered from the Niger Delta and eastern Mali, indicating that the Niger acted as a conduit of trade from the Atlantic coast to the Sahel and thence to the Middle East (Davison,1972; Insoll and Shaw, 1997).

Archaeological sites in the Niger Delta show that advanced economic development began much earlier there than elsewhere in West Africa. This is seen in early use of metallurgy. At one metallurgical complex, dated to 765 BC, iron ore was smelted in furnaces measuring a meter wide. The molten slag was drained through conduits to pits, where it formed blocks weighing up to 43-47 kg. The operating temperatures are estimated to have varied between 1,155 and 1,450 degrees C (Holl, 2009). Some radiocarbon dates for iron smelting in this region go back to 2000 BC (Eze-Uzomaka, 2009).

This production seems to have been in excess of local needs and therefore driven by trade with other peoples:

One aspect which can be inferred from the cylindrical slag blocks left behind is that the Lejja smelters must have had excess production of iron, and this may have led to extensive trade to far and distant places, sustained over a long period of time. (Eze-Uzomaka, 2009)

CastedDude:
A man has revealed his surprise after visiting the library located in the Palace of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. According to him, the massive living room which doubles as a library - is not only gorgeous but a forest of books. According to reports, the Emir still has close to 14,000 collections in his house in London that he is planning to bring back home in Kano state.

Read what Nur Habib shared online after his visit to the exquisite library;

I left the Emir's Palace here in Kano at about 9:35 pm. I went with my uncle and cousin this time around. And I went into sections of the Palace that I have never been to before. It was beautiful, especially at night. The renovations and reconstructions some grumbled about are well worth it in my humble opinion.

We met the King in his new library at the Palace. A very exquisitely furnished large room with the most beautiful wood panelling and chandeliers I have ever seen. There were shelves on two sides of the room filled from the floor to the ceiling with books.

Remember that family law he proposed one time? Well, the issue came up as His Highness rose to get a copy of a book on Islamic jurisprudence written ages ago where the recommended minimum age for marriage was surprisingly specified at 18. He then read from another book that listed the different age limits for marriage for both males and females in several Middle-eastern countries and across different Islamic sects.

He said that he is still insisting that the minimum age limit can be debated, ranging between 15, 16 and so on, as many scholars argued for, but that he still prefers it to be set at 18 years old. But to insist that the institution of marriage cannot be regulated is not only disingenuous but absurd.

The King then recounted a conversation he once had with a prominent scholar here in Kano where the Malam told His Highness that the problem with introducing something as new as the King is proposing is that the people will not welcome it. That they will "talk".

The Emir laughed, as did we, when he said he replied the Malam saying that what will the people say other than what people like him tell them? If he tells them to accept it, they will not resist. Likewise, if he also tells them to reject it then that is what they'll do. Scholars have that power here. Sometimes more power than the government even.

Anyway, work is still ongoing. The law is still being fine-tuned and all the different sides will meet up once again to find a final way forward.

He even added that the Governor of Jigawa told him that they are already very willing to implement such a family law there.

Discussions moved on to other subjects as I continued to marvel at the elegant beauty of His Highness' marvellous library. And I thought to myself, wait o, this man is equally a scholar himself. He is not just aping or making noise but he actually knows what he is talking about from the perspectives of religion, culture and the law.

Another thing meeting him today reminded me of is that he is quite tall too. You don't really see it on TV or in pictures. Or when he's seated in all his kingly regalia on a throne.

One last thing that he did that I found extremely remarkable was how he quickly recognized me. The first and last time I visited and met the Emir in private was sometime early or mid last year, I can't remember when precisely but I did make a post about it here. We had a brief conversation after I had introduced myself and I haven't met with the Emir one on one ever since.

Yet, the man recognized me almost instantly. Considering the volume of faces he comes across almost on a daily basis, I found this to be very impressive. What a memory.

MissAprokoMedia:
A Nigerian Man, Olaniyi Samuel Akanni, 35yrs old took to his Facebook timeline to share his experience as a married man, he revealed how his 25yrs old wife abandoned him when he lost his Job 2 months after their traditional Wedding, saying she couldn't settle down with a Jobless Man.

Mr. Akanni who lost his job due to fraudulent activity that happened at his workplace went on to reveal how he battled and struggled with loneliness and heartbreak, how he took to Begging money from his friends and family to survive, just when he thought he had lost it all... The light of favor shined on him.

It turned out that 6 month after his wife left him, he was called back to his Job (by then the mixup at his workplace had been cleared), he wasn't demoted but was paid N2.7 million to recover his losses.

The big issue at hand is the fact that his run-away wife has heard he's gotten his job back and is swimming in money and she twants to come back, should he forgive her?

080jbabe:
A member of my team had been under performing for a while . I was worried because, prior to this time, she was one of the star performers of our team. As the head of department and team lead,I was getting worried. She was not getting more accounts and she seemed a little distracted at work. After about a month of watching Kene’s behavior,I decided to call her and speak with her.

She came into my office. I asked her to sit down and tell me what was wrong. She said she had no idea what I meant. So I explained that her performance was giving me cause for worry but she said there was no problem, she would work on it. I asked her if everything was ok in the home front, she said yes.

Kene is a young woman who got married to her boyfriend last year,I think around September. We all attended the wedding from the office. Anyway,if there was anything wrong with Kene in her marriage,it didn’t show but her performance was clearly not impressive anymore.

A few days later,I came into work around 9.30am and called for a quick briefing with my staff. I noticed that Kene was not around. When I asked, everyone said she had not come in. We tried her phone line and she didnt answer. At some point through the meeting,Kene sent an sms that she was on her way. Just before we finished the meeting, she came in,apologizing for being late. I didnt say anything but I asked her to wait to see me after the meeting.

After the meeting,I didnt hold back,I came down hard on her for coming late, even after our discussing a few days ago about her performance. I went on talking about how frustrating it was to see her performance at work begin to slid downwards. I went on and on,rebuking her. Eventually, she couldnt hold back, she broke down and started crying. I was shocked. I stopped talking at that point and was a bit ashamed that I had made her cry. But she went on to say she was sorry about everything but that she was going through so much at the moment in her marriage. I knew it!..Or I sensed it. I asked her what the problem was but all she could do was shake with sobs and tears. I just got up at that point and held her. I started to comfort her and tell her it was ok. Seeing that we were in the office,I asked her to clean up her eyes and get back to work, that we would talk later.

Towards close of work that day,I asked Kene to meet me at a restaurant close to our office so we could talk away from the prying eyes of others in the office. When Kene came,we both sat down and ordered drinks. Its not un-usual for us to have one or two bottles of beer among my team members in this restaurant after work hours.

Kene began to narrate how miserable she was in her marriage. Apparently, she had married a serial womanizer. Her husband was not being faithful and he was also beating her. she found out on her wedding night, that he was texting another woman. After she moved in with him,she found out that several women were sending s*x messages and pictures (videos inclusive)to his phone. She confronted him and that was the beginning of their issues. He would get angry with her for confronting him and beat her. She didnt believe this was the same sweet guy she courted for almost two years and married in a very lavish wedding ceremony.

She said in order for her to have peace, she decided to stop confronting him about his affairs. But what happens recently is that,he now comes back drunk from his side chicks and wants to forcefully sleep with her. When she resists, her beats her and rapes her.

At that point,I couldnt believe what I was hearing. It was shocking that this young lady has been going through hell since last year and no one knew. I asked her why she didnt tell anyone. She said she had told her parents and pastor. Her pastor advised her against leaving the man, that God does not like divorce. Her parents want her to leave the man. She on her side is ashamed that her marriage is less than six months and is already heading to hell.

I counselled her and told her that she needed to get help. I told her she has options, get separated and see how she can get help for her marriage. She was apparently too traumatized and afraid to even take any step. With all these conversations,we had had more than enough drinks. It was too painful. I was in rage. I guess we both wanted to drown our pain in alcohol.

After drinks,I offered to drive her home as it was apparently not safe for her to drive or even out her in an Uber that could take advantage of a drunk young woman. So I offered to take her home. Thankfully,I had my Driver. So we drove out. Half way through to her place, she fell asleep in the car. At that point,I knew I couldnt take her home in that condition. I was confused.. If I took her home, what if her husband decided to attack her again especially now that it was obvious she was drunk?

At that point,I called my friend for advice. James advised me to lodge Kene in a hotel that night. I though that was a brilliant idea. I then asked my driver to take us to a hotel used sometimes by our company. We got a room for her and helped her up. I told the hotel management to take care of her and I left that night around 11.30pm.

Around 6am,Kene called me and told me she was awake. She thanked me and went home to change. I asked her to take the day off to get some rest.

After work that day,I got back home around 8pm to meet kene on my door step!....

My husband did something that is really paining me o... I'm the quiet one and he's the outspoken one, so whenever we argue, he will want to defend himself to the last.

So over the weekend, we did a lot of work especially him and while he was
busy working, I was cooking. He didn't want to tell me how far he has gone with the chores he was doing and he didn't want me to assist him either because of my nasal allergy and I was angry, because I felt he's seeing me as very weak to do serious chores.

When we were eating, I accused him of being sneaky about the chores. He ignored me.. I stopped eating, I did not even carry my meat..I went to sit down and turned my face away.(Yea I'm petty and spoilt like that).

Mr boo did not say anything, he kept eating and started chewing his meat very well so I will hear him...and I was very very hungry because I've been waiting for him to finish the chores so we eat together as usual. He did not just ignore me, he went ahead and ate my big meat.

I just swallowed saliva immediately he started chewing my own meat because I knew it was my meat he was eating at that moment...

With that anger, I went to sleep with hunger but he did not beg me to eat unlike before. Meanwhile, no sex because we are trying to make babies, so he's storing his "something" to be rich enough to fertilize during ovulation.

Only for him to wake me up in the morning, he apologised, we prayed and he turned to me and said
"Baby, do you know why I ignored you when you were just talking and talking yesterday?"
"No, why...So you know you were doing it intentionally abi?"
He laughed and then said "..... I know you are restless because you've not been banged... You know if it's before, as you are just talking, I'd just carry you, kiss you and knack you very well and you'll become dumb, so just calm down, we have few days left..."

Chai, that was like adding salt to injury... I felt embarrassed and most of all, I felt like a wild dog on her heat period.

Are women usually restless when they are sex starved?

Family › Re: Men That Cheat Still Love Their Wives by PSTEMMA1960(m): 12:05pm On Jan 30, 2018
aremuforlife:
Read This Carefully

A man can cheat on his woman and still love her but a woman cannot cheat on her man and still love him. I say this because while men do not have sex with emotions, women can't have sex without attaching emotions to it. This is the reason men simply need a place to have sex while women need a reason to have sex.
Most women who take their husbands to court for divorce are those that cheat on their men. A non cheating woman would most likely never take her husband to court for divorce, unless the man exceedingly abuses her physically and emotionally to the point of killing her.

Men don't equate sex with love. A man can have sex with another woman but still doesn't love her. That's why women who fell in love with married men find it difficult to find happiness in those relationships as they are just being used by those married men. But once a married woman starts sleeping with you, she can even narrates some hidden secretes concerning her husband and she will even tell you why she hates him (her husband). She can even accept poison from you to eliminate her husband.

For men, sex and love are two different things. But for women, sex and love are one and the same things. For men, sex comes first before love (infatuation), but for women love comes first before sex (true love). Therefore, once your woman starts having sex with another man/men, her love shifts from you to that man and she can even start giving that man the best food and love than she gives you.

The fact that your man is cheating on you doesn't mean he has stopped loving you. But I can't say the same for women. Once a woman starts cheating on you, she has fallen for someone else and you people will never live the same again. And she can even kill her husband once she starts cheating on him.
If your wife starts cheating, you should be a lucky man not to die in less than 10 years. It has been found that 95% of women who cheat wish their husbands dead. That is the main reason why it is dangerous for a man to continue staying with a wife who cheats on him. That is why is now encouraged everywhere in the world including in the Bible, for a man to divorce his wife only once she starts cheating on him. Cheating women are more deadly to husbands than ordinarily criminals or weapons. There are many cheating women in the world who invite criminals to break into her house at night only to come and eliminate her man and police officers plus relatives can't detect this as the same woman tend to moan more than any person at the funeral so as to attract sympathy and hide her evil acts.

That's why psychologists discourage women, more than men, from cheating.

Women can't handle the emotional conflict that comes with cheating.

That's the reason an observant and intelligent man will notice that his wife has started cheating on him once he starts doing it because most women tend to lose respect to their husbands and try to avoid sex with them in most times.

Cheating Women will even be giving excuses for not wanting to have sex with their husbands. Study has revealed that nearly 90% of women who cheat find it hard to have enjoyable sex with their husbands, again an intelligent man will detect this once his wife's behavior with regard to sex start changing. But a dull man can never detect this and always tolerate fake excuses from his cheating wife until he is completely eliminated.

Study has shown that every relationship begins to flounder once a woman starts cheating. There are many men who cheat on their partners but still show them true love. But it is very hard to find a relationship in which a woman is cheating and things still remain the same.

I repeat, nearly 100% of cheating women wish their husbands quick death or divorce to have unlimited sex freedom while nearly 100% of cheating men can't wish their wives quick death or divorce. That is why most men cant allow their wives to be physically or verbally abused by their girlfriends. Men will always stand for their wives.

A man would cheat but still love and respect his wife, but the opposite is true with cheating women.

Once your wife starts sleeping with other men/man, just know that your death is near.

thirdly u carried knife and treathened to kill anyone that comes close, meaning u have a short temper , u may nt be a smoker, bt some smokers can't even behave like u..

forthly, for ur father to go to ur school it means that ur mum was in support of it, and for ur mum to surport him, then u have really giving her sleepness nights..

my advice, if u are good as u claimed, jst resign from ur place of work, get a new job and start all over again..

the people that are reporting u here are ur familes, nt outsiders..

once they say that this person is mad or smokes, if he is harsh, people around will say that did we nt say it, and if he is calm, they will say he is a pretender..

I no even know Suleiman b4 this scandal. men in power should stop using their power to oppress the poor.
if u don't know him that means u are nt a religious type, can u tell me one popular person that people have nt spoken evil about?
