Go and read General Maurice Gamelin memoirs and records from those involved in the war. The Allies were willing to tolerate the fascists but not the communists and they expected Hitler to go Eastward from the get go. When he invaded Poland, Even thou England and France declared war, they didn't really do anything. it was known as the Phony war in Britain and the French called it "drôle de guerre" (strange war).
