I posted it again. They must answer!

Only a crazy man will compare America with Nigeria, that's not what this is all about.

I was only suggesting its okay for the OP or anyone with some cash to relocate back home (just make sure you get the "Kpali" first though).

Moreover, there are a lots of hardworking people that will rather stay in naija and make it big time because they save on their incomes massively.

If you have $30000 then naija is your best choice.

And you passed maths when you wrote WAEC...i'm dying of laughter here, save for taxes , all the other expenses are per month..so.multiply it as needed and see how much is left...kids..smh

Depending on location, $1200 Is pretty cheap for rent..
And he's not even adding other expenses, hair cut, clothing other miscellaneous expenses..

Don't do this to yourself. Respect yourself. Unexpected expenses could eat up that 150k alone.

unsuspected expenses is not included.

My carpenter paid just N75k for his apartment yearly. Wait o, he goes 70 - 30 % with his wife on this.

should I continue?

You rip what you sow, how can someone for over 25 years cant save 400$ monthly.. From your above assertion you are sunk in credit card debt "you caused it because you were not frugal in ur spending culture hence you have to pay back ". owing back taxes was solely your choice, what you did was an exempt on your W2 which we all know IRS will take what belong to them. I got $8000 on my tax refund last year, " once again you are solely to be blamed"

You mentioned OLOSHO it only tells how you have lived your life for the past 25 years. I make more than what u say u make but with my spending habit i send home $1200 monthly to my account in Nigeria.. The focal point is if you dont curb how u spend your money in america you will run broke quickly not only in america anywhere in the world, spend wisely and avoid debt and u will see ur hard earned money in your savings Account.

I don't know you. It's only smart for me not to judge you. Unlike you I don't like to disrespect people.

Before you talk more trash about me why not help yourself and search my moniker on this forum to educate yourself?

Why must you insult people to make your opinion?

Do you think the "likes" you get for insulting me will make any difference to your life? smh

Social security is not enough to live on in the United States. Presently someone over 65yrs gets just a bit over $1500 monthly from social security which is unable to pay the rent and bills, thats why people are required to fund a 401k. Most Americans dont even have $5,000 saved in 401k which spells financial disaster when they are due for social security at 65

Bravo !

Like I said before, I'm forced to stay here by fire-by-force because they wont gimme my money I contributed to social insurance. I was told I have to be either 65 to collect everything or 55 to collect half of it.

Now I have to live in naija and try to for go 6 figure$ accumulated already or stay in America like a slave.

Chai! God punished the devil! embarassed

What you forgot to mention is that 17k covers your basic needs. In Canada that 17k in taxes covers your medical, roads, schooling (not post secondary), police, etc. Not to mention you get a pension once retired (social security) and several safety net in case of jobless. Such as employment insurance, as you get a salary for 11 months if you get laid off. You're attempting to paint a picture like that 17k is just given to the government and we receive nothing back.

Now in naija by the time you pay for your kids school fees from elementary out of pocket, buy gen, buy fuel for Neppa, constantly change your shocks because of bad road, go get India visa, pay for the flight, then medical bills to get that surgery in Indiana, etc. How much you go save? Talk true my guy. "Poverty" in the West is laziness and living above your means. Don't get that confused.

I'm not (@ the bold). Yes the government use the tax payers money wisely. I'm only trying to elaborate on the amount of money left in your pocket after paying those taxes. In other words I'm saying even though you make $60000 yearly you will be richer if you can make just $6k yearly in naija. Why? because of the obvious reasons.

This one is a big fool o

This guy is deranged; D cheesy

The guy is actually right. I've spent almost 25 years here and I can tell you that it's extremely tough to save $400 per month on a $55,000 annual salary, I'm not saying you can't but its very hard especially when when you're paying $1200/month for rent, $100/month for electric bills, $70 on phones, $250/month on car insurance, $250 on gas/month, $50 on cables/month maybe $400 or less/month on food the rest can't even be accounted for like credit cards bills, line of credit or over-draft, olosho etc.

The thing is, you pay up to $17000 in taxes alone from the $55,000 depending which states you reside, then if you owe back-taxes, IRS might garnished up to another 10% of whatever that is left after basic taxes and deductions. By the time you get your pay cheque in your account bi-weekly, you don't even have enough to cover your rent let alone to eat. This is why you have more than 10 time the number of homeless people in USA compare to Nigeria. I don't want to scare you but it is inevitable. Take the current US President for an example, he was once almost homeless too. (google it)

It's not that you cant make big money, it's just that you can't save it (easily).

Nigeria on the other hand, once you have a mindset of doing everything by yourself and ignore the government, that is just the beginning of wisdom. Naija is a shit- hole no doubt but it's also a country where you can bend the rules to your advantage. And for only that reason alone with determinations, the sky is not the limit but the beginning. I'm not here to preach, all you need is N500k.

Before you or anyone call me names, please click on my moniker and read some of my posts dated years back on this topic when I decided to relocate back to Nigeria.

Stay blessed!

For all those that are saying OP shouldn't go back to Nigeria, I have this to say to you...

I pray LORD God hears your prayers and take you to your desired destinations. I pray you have the best education money can buy. I pray you work in one of the fortune 100 companies and have a fat account. I pray you live and never ever even thing about relocating back to Nigeria.

You have no idea what it is to live in America for decades. Trust me, it's not a blessing, it's not something you really want. It's a shame we don't appreciate what we have till we loose it. No matter how successful you become, you will never find that peace till you relocate back home. Trust me, I know. Nigeria is not one of the better county out there to live but it's still your "home".

America is good to get some education and work experience with some cash like the OP outlined, nothing else. If we all go back home to start something with our savings, then we can help our brothers and sisters to get a job. Imagine if just 200k naija here go back home to set up a business that can employ 10 people each? Now multiply the original figure by 5?

Most people here don't want to go back home because of the way you paint naija negatively. Sure, there's a lot of nativities out there but there are even more here too. e.g. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-32740523

What makes you guys think the West doesn't have their problems?

Be positive and never give up. Stop waiting for government to do everything for you, matter of fact don't expect them to do anything for you. Why? Prepare for the worst and hope for the best nevertheless, put your trust in God and not the Nigeria government.

Thank you
Bros the only thing those place have more than Lagos is Police and the structures.
Imagine them rating even London ahead of Moscow and St Petersburg.
The same London thier are more people on the street than house

You are right. Even it was just early this year they forced people sleeping and camping on the street off the most beautiful city in the world, Vancouver. It got so bad, BC government has to make a new law not to sell new houses to foreigner from Asia anymore.

They will close their eyes on this issue and put the video of the worst part of Lagos on prime time CNN news.

Don't get me wrong, Lagos still has long way to go but we definitely have bigger issues in all of the top 10 cities on the list too.

Hi,

I live in Calgary (the 5th on best city on this list) for almost a decade now, I can honestly tell you that after living in Staten Island NY, Chicago (north side)IL, Montreal, QC and of Lagos, Nigeria. Calgary is probably the worst place I've ever lived. Why? The only thing here is, it has the lowest unemployment rate in North America, other than that, its crap! No life, no recreations, no amusements no beach no play!

Chicago on the other side is awesome, but its not just guaranteed that you will live to see the next day because of the gun violence and high crimes rate.

I wonder why they Lagos was rated so low, to me, this city is way better than most of top 50's on the list.

Properties / Re: What Sacrifices Are You Taking Or Took To Build Your Own House? by Qc1(m): 7:14am On Jul 07, 2017
edoman2016:
I want to learn from house owners or those that are still building their own house, the sacrifices they took or are taking to have enough money to build their own house. It could be cutting down your lifestyle expenses such as cars, clothing, electronics etc, opening a side business or taking an extra job, or no vacation for the family.

Some of us will like to learn from your experiences on the sacrifices you took before building your house.

If you are living in the USA /Canada you will need to get at least 2 full-time jobs because we all know that 9-5 barely cut the rent/mortgage + other bills. If you have a family member that earns a decent living then that will be very helpful too. You will need to save about $120K USD or less depending on the qualities and taste for your build. I don't know what you do but I know if you ain't got 25% of the budget already saved up before you even think bout something like this, then get ready to endure some hardship in cutting back on your lifestyles. This means forget about any vacations, expensive gifts, unnecessary bills like cables will have to be swapped for Netflix, stop wasting that extra money going to parks or the movies, if possible to let go your ride for public transit, then go for it because you will save from car insurance + car maintenance. You might even need to eat just once daily plus some fruits. However if you used to eat out a lot then cut back to cooking your own food. etc.

Does it worth it? well... lemme put it this way. At the end, you will have the same joy and feelings compared to a pregnant woman that just gave birth to a healthy baby. grin
