Another annoying aspect of this is people living in Nigeria giving their child/children english names. Interestingly, Nigerians living abroad give their child/children nigerian names. I can't stop wondering about this contrast.

I have abandoned folic acid n paludrine n bco long time ago cos takin drug evryday is annoyin. Also,bco gives me too much drive for food n wt ma healthy appetite,I dnt tink I need enhancement jor. Tinkin of goin back to folic acid

Dreystar: Does anyone know if excessive water intake as any negative impact on ones health?

Years ago, on a very sunny day, I got dehydrated, and began craving for water, in less than 12hrs, I drank 25Litres of water(I had water in a 25litres keg and it got exhausted within 12hrs )
I kept peeing at intervals and couldn't eat as I was filled.
That very evening, I became dizzy and had to go see my doctor, the doctor insisted I stayed back at the hospital for "observation" though I wasn't given any medication but the doctor said taking excess Water isn't good for me.
But since then, I've not had a reoccurence of such, but I drink water adequately.

Can anyone explain what was wrong with me back then?

U were on water suicide n nt water therapy(LOL). I can finish one bag of purewater btw fri n sun nite. Water ni jor,water ni jare

blink182: just follow what I said earlier, there is nothing you have suffered or suffering from that I haven't suffered and recovered from unless you have had a stroke and I doubt.

Protruding belly in people living with SCA is as a result of enlarged spleen, liver or both. Due to the fact that they are overworked in the job of breakdown of sickle cell and conjugation of bilirubin. They tend to hypertrophy to compensate for their increased functions.
Its treatment is usually splenectomy when it becomes worrisome. But immunisation against some organisms may have to preceed the surgical procedure. Though most people living with SCA undergoes autosplenectomy before attaining adulthood. There is no treatment for enlarged liver. Partial hepatectomy is not advised. Protruded belly may also be due to ascites if liver decompensates in failure.

Using glucose to treat jaundice is new to me. Though glucose might be of benefit in constant fatigue, but it certainly has no proven benefit in the treatment of jaundice.

So I can survive wtout spleen. Whre can I av this spleenctomy? Is the spleen close to liver? I tink in need another abdominal scan. Marinho(St Gregory Hospital @ yemetu) here I come.

Some unimformed one will even tink ure a glutton eatin all the eatable. I dnt tell them the reasons cos some of them are myopic. I can't even wear tight fitted blouse/dress.
Am always sad abt this.

Abali1: There is no limit to the water intake. I fit even drink drum, if my belle go gree me.

Am addicted to water, this addiction started frm childhood. Praise the Lord!!!

Dreystar: Working to curb excess weight at 60kg??

Dunno what to do about my own weight(I weigh far above 60kg) and I live with SCD!
Life indeed is beautiful

I tink the excess weight resulted frm less crisis. I dnt take late nite food n av reduce my dinner. It has to b taken bfr 7. I dnt fry ma turkey/chicke/fish(stop takin meat) again, I just grill them in the microwave oven. Loads of water o. Now am more beautiful n some tink am stil in ma twenty n I just laugh.

Reminds me of masef as a child,avoid takin ma folic acid n paludrine until crisis set in. Now as an adult. I take dem religiously. Now I eat beta(growin up wtout an appetite) appetite for food increased  i̶̲̥̅̊n̶̲̥̅̊ 1999 n I av not lookd back since. I av really added weight, I now weigh 60kg.wrkin to curb excess weight. Life is Good!!!

Madam,whre do I start? I hate the limitatn placed on me by the sickness esp as a child. Loads of don't do which I ended up doing. I missed class in pry sch a lot n its always annoying wen I had crisis fri bfr my term exam. I remba in pry 3 that I had to miss term exam. As usual, dad went to inform the sch about it,went for exam after the crisis,lo n behold,I came first. The funny thin is, I was a prize winner from pry one to five bfr they stopped giving prizes. Let me tell you that my survival is due to God n ma parents esp ma mum. I had access to good food,ma mum being a foodseller. I was a regular @ †ђξ company's hospital courtsey of ma dad. All the doctors n nurses addressd me by ma middle name. I was a regular.
In '92, I was in JSS2, I nearly died frm malaria o. I was absent from sch for weeks. Ma dad had to obtain Doc's report @ d sch's behest. I survived n continue like dat into snr class. Crisis abated as I move into SS2/3. No crisis in ma SS3 n waec was smooth.
Now, I am an HND n ACCA holder n av 6yrs experience. Its nt easy getting those qualificatn. Let's save that for another day.
Note - my parents av the experince wt SCD. First born is livin wt SCD n ova 53yrs. He could be reckless @ times just lik stronger.

Sori I can't share one of ma many plays wt fate on an open blog like this. Cos its so personal n I nearly lost ma life. While growing up, I av had ma share of recklessness vis-a-vis takin of cold water,abandonment of drugs,exposure of body to cold weather. In 2009 n 2011, I was travellin to lag evryweekend for almost 3mths. Imagine workin mon to fri n den sat off to lag back in ibadan on sun n den back to work on mon. There are times I av traveld to other states to wrk(its part of ma job n av had ma share of travellin since I started working in 2007.working outside ma city comes wt the job. Moreso, I am still single)come back on fri,travel to lag on sat n come back on sun. I got wat I was going to lag for everyweekend,I am now an ACCA affiliate.
I don't want to play wt fate anymore,it cud backfire!!!!

Let's be honest here. It's like a 'curse frm the gods' but still, one has to face the challenges. I have managed to achieve so much educationally and financially even with this problem.

I live a 'reckless' life, i do drink alcohol, brandy and beer.I've been drinking now for 16yrs but i hope to call it a day soon. frm 4 bottles of lager at a sitting i now take only 1. And yes i do have lots of sex too . Now, i'm lucky i dnt really have pains. Actually, i can have pains just once a year and there is a pill i jst take and the pain goes. I would have loved to recommend it but i know it will be abused by those who suffer pain. The pill works and it is an anti-inflammatory drug and i guess it can be addictive.

I am lucky to be this strong but that doesn't mean all is perfect. I suffer from malaria alot when in Nigeria. There is no way i can avoid being in Nigeria at least 6mnths a year. it's so bad that i must have malaria once a mnth and sometimes i need to take multiple malaria drugs (with all that side effects) for the malaria to clear. So irritating.

There is something u guys didn't mention. It is called PRIAPISM. Painful erection in males without sexual arousal. That is something that gives me issues too at night, i have to wake up and do some exercises before it subsides and it only happens when i'm asleep. It denies me my full 8hrs most times. By and large, i'm a pretty strong guy and 90% of people who know me don't know that i have SCD. I hardly take transfusions, maybe once in 5yrs or so.I don't take meds, just folic and multivitamins. That is what i've taken for yrs and then the water thing is superb. Works like magic. I hardly eat though and my eating habit is pathetic.

this disorder has limited my life cos there is so much i think i can achieve but sometimes the strength isn't there. There must be a limit to how we can push ourselves.

I have a partner who is crazy about me and wants to drag me to the alter. I'm kind of reluctant. What if this disorder decides i've had enough good luck and decides to mess me up by throwing a misfortune my way. We are prone to all sorts of problems from organ failure to blindness. I don't want anybody to suffer in case i become a liability. These are random thoughts though. An inner voice tells me all will be well and i will keep having good health. Who knows. I might take the plunge soon enough and hope for the best.

My summary is that avoid sickle cell by all means. Luv is never enough. This disorder is wicked. Actually, i see it as one of the worse illness in the world. Stay safe and stay strong.

Yeah, the recklessness comes wt the disease. I can't even share wat I av done as a babe living wt SCD. I cudnt av survived if not for God. God's mercy.

I am above 30 n my genotype is SC. Being alive today is just God if I remba to sleepless nite of pain. I wish I cud stop these pain killers, cos now I av ulcer cos of them. Whre can I get drug-cellod-s? I kno ow to get discovite.
Pls tell that man to have a positive outlook towards life. Headache,fever n mild pain setting in,M̶̲̥̅γ̲̣̣̥ bed beckons.

These people are all over the country. I remembered in 2005 during my NYSC,an IT student in my office was almost a victim in Jos. N they are evrywhre in Ibadan too,UI,UCH,Bodija rd,Ring rd,Liberty rd. I had an encounter wt them on my way to Church this Sunday. Anoda passenger was already boarding and I calld out to her but she refused. That was after I already got down frm their cab. Same ruse for ages n greedy peeps stil fall victim. They are diabolical too
