Politics / I Inherited N400billion Debt Owed 8,000 Contractors’ – NDDC Boss by queentell(f): 7:32am On Apr 11, 2016
The Acting Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, weekend, said the biggest challenge she was facing since assumption of office, was the fact that “we are owing so many people.”

Mrs. Semenitari disclosed this on Sunday when she featured on the News Agency of Nigeria Forum in Abuja. She said the commission owed more than 8,600 contractors between N400 billion and N450 billion when she assumed office, but about 600 of them had been paid by her administration. According to her, the paucity of funds coupled with the public perception of the commission became sources of concern for the management of NDDC. She, however, said that the commission had to deal with both challenges and reinvigorate the workforce to be able to get to its present state.

Semenitari said: “That is a lot of money. So, the first challenge was, we had so many contracts and and so much debt, so there was a big hole right there. The second was the perception problem. The commission was perceived, rightly or wrongly, as a place you just come, take your own share and go.

Politics / Nigeria Will Keep Faith With Western World – Buhari by queentell(f): 1:37am On Mar 12, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday assured that Nigeria will stand with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, SADR, in line with several resolutions of the African Union, AU, on the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence. The President stated this in Abuja while receiving the Minister of Foreign Affairs of SADR, Mohammed Salem Ould Salek,

who visited him at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa as Special Envoy of President Mohammed Abdelaziz of SADR. Pledging that outstanding issues on self-determination for the country would be scrupulously attended to, Buhari noted that: “the issue first came up when I was in office as military head of state. After I left government, Nigeria remained steadfast on it.

“In my maiden outing at the UN General Assembly last September, the issue of Sahrawi was in my speech. You have no cause to doubt our commitment. We stand with our African Union colleagues on this issue. “Nigeria will maintain focus till everything is finally resolved positively,” he told Salek. Advertisement The Special Envoy said his country would never forget the role Nigeria and its then military head of state, General Muhammadu Buhari played in recognizing his country in 1984,

when it sought self-determination from Morocco. “It paved the way for the UN to adopt several key resolutions on Western Sahara, elaborating a peace plan. History is now repeating itself, as you are the President of Nigeria at a time the Sahrawi issue is being put on the front burner again.

Politics / Court Sentences Popular Nollywood Actress, Ibinabo Fiberesima To 5-year Jail by queentell(f): 1:25am On Mar 12, 2016
The Court of Appeal Lagos Division, Friday dismissed an appeal filed by ex beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima challenging a Lagos High Court judgement which sentenced her to serve five years in prison for the death of one Dr. Giwa Suraj. The embattled president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) was sentenced by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi for reckless driving which caused the death of Suraj in an auto accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

He was a staff of a Lagos State hospital. Dissatisfied, Fiberesima in her amended appellant brief filed by her lawyer, Nnaemeka Amaechina, urged the court to set aside the sentence and restore the decision of the Magistrate Court which sentenced her to a N100, 000 fine. But, delivering judgment Friday, the appellate court dismissed the appeal and affirmed the High Court’s judgment. In a unanimous decision delivered by Justice Jamilu Yammama Tukur the court held that the trial Magistrate Court lacked the discretion to grant Ibinabo an option of fine after her conviction.

It held further that the appeal lacked merit and thereby dismissed it accordingly. Other members of the panel are Justice U.I. Ndukwe-Anyanwu (Mrs.) (presiding) and Justice Tijani Abubakar respectively. Ibinabo, who was visibly apprehensive throughout the proceeding, burst into tears immediately the judgment was delivered.

Politics / Prostitutes Beat Up Policeman In Apapa by queentell(f): 10:27am On Jan 27, 2016
“When Usang asked them where they were going, the accused could not give a satisfactory answer and he decided to take them to the police station. Paul and Aneka, who did not want to follow the policeman to the station, conspired to beat him up and also tear his shirt,” Elibeh told the court.

The offence contravened Sections 166, 172 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 166 provides a N15, 000 fine or imprisonment for three months for disorderly act, while Section 172 stipulates a three-year jail term for serious assault.

The accused, however, denied the charge. The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolarinwa, granted the sex workers bail in the sum of N50,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Vunokilang Police Station in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State was among the 30 people killed in an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Sunday morning .

Reports from the area revealed that the suspected herdsmen raided four villages: Demsare, Wunamokoh, Dikajam and Taboungo in what is believed to be a vengeance mission over an existing feud with farmers in the area.

Several houses and other property in the villages were also burnt in the attack.

The DPO, Okozie Okereofor, a Chief Superintendent of Police, who was deployed to the state about two months ago, was said to have been ambushed when he was leading police officers to the disputed area. He was killed in the eventual shootout with his assailants.

The corpse of the slain police officer and the others killed is currently deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.

The Police in Adamawa have confirmed the killing of Mr. Okereofor.

“The DPO and his team were attacked while on official duty in the affected villages where he was killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen,” the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, Othman Abubakar, said.

“Report at my disposal indicated that the attackers looted foodstuff and livestock of the villagers before setting the villages ablaze.

“The suspected Fulani herdsmen raided four villages in Girei local Government area on Sunday morning around 5:30 a.m. killing scores including the late DPO.”

Politics / Chief Of Army Staff Buratai Involved In $2.1billion Arms Deal by queentell(f): 10:35pm On Jan 24, 2016
The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur
Buratai and other top army officers in the ongoing probe of the alleged involved of some military chiefs in economic and financial
crimes in the management of personnel finances and the purchase of arms for the prosecution of the war against insurgency, despite that
he (Buratai) was the Defence Head Quarters (DHQ) Director of Procurement between 2012 and 2015.

In a statement issued in Abuja today and signed by its National Secretary, Mazi Steven O. Chilaka, STNM said it was concerned that
only Air Force chiefs were listed among those recommended for probe by the committee established to audit the procurement of arms and
equipment in the armed forces and defence sector from 2007 to 2015.

The statement read; Major General Tukur Buratai was appointed Director of Procurement DHQ in 2012, a position he held until May 2015 that he
was appointed Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTNF), an appointment he held till he became Chief of Army Staff.

As Director of Public Procurement at the DHQ, all procurements by the military between 2012 and May 2015 passed through his office. Our
question is; how can you probe procurement of arms within this period without the involvement of Major General Buratai, the man who was the
Director of Procurement?

Curiously too, only retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Air Force were said to have been indicted.

Politics / God Has A Hand In Nigeria’s Economic Challenges – Oyegun by queentell(f): 2:06pm On Jan 21, 2016
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Thursday said that Nigeria’s present economic downturn could be an act of God to remind Nigeria on the need to implement and embrace radical change, particularly in the country’s current economic model.‎

Chief Oyegun made the disclosure when he received in audience a 15-member delegation of an APC support group, Change Agents Foundation (CAF) led by its Director-General, Dr. Felix Felix at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

His words: “I think God has a hand in the current economic predicament of the country. Imagine the sudden fall in the price of crude oil, the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, from its heights in 2014, averaging $112 per barrel down to the current price of $28 per barrel — lower than the $38 per barrel which the proposed 2016 budget is predicated on.

“It is an object lesson for us. It tells us that we must embrace radical change in our economic model.”

According to him, the fall in oil price has taken its toll on the revenue and expenditure of the Federal Government and as a result is having a severe effect on the economy.
“The concept of change is a difficult one. Nigeria must be ready to adapt to new ways of doing things. As a party, we know and understand it calls for tremendous sacrifice, there is no other way.

“Yes the economy is in a bad shape, but maybe that is the kick we need to be innovative and find ways to drive the economy out of the woods.

Politics / Pipeline Bombing: Group Warns Buhari Against Witch-hunting Tompolo by queentell(f): 7:53am On Jan 20, 2016
The current push for the apprehension of Tompolo by the Federal government, has been condemned by a pressure group known as the Alliance for the Preservation of Nigerian Democracy (APND).

Troops begin search for TompoloTroops are currently in search for Tompolo

According to the group, the government’s efforts to arrest the ex-militant chief, is just an unrelenting and unwarranted onslaught.

In an interview with newsmen on Tuesday, January 19, the group’s spokesman, Bolarinwa Ajayi, described what it termed “the unrelenting and unwarranted onslaught on Government Ekpemupolo, a.k.a Tompolo as more of a witch-hunt than any real drive against corruption.”

The group said: “This is a clear case of political vendetta taken too far. First, they tried to rope in Tompolo on account of the National Maritime University. When that failed, they started talking of Okerekonko community land. that has failed, now they are talking of N34 billion laundering. Who do they expect to believe that Tompolo laundered money?”

“If we are not careful, the present APC administration will truncate democracy and plunge our nation into needless internal strife due to its utter clueless stance of fighting absolutely everyone at the same time,” the APND asserted.

The group also alleged that: “Tompolo’s only crime is that he refused to abandon President Jonathan and refused to work for APC in Bayelsa.”

Politics / Awolowo Would Have Joined APC, Says Alaafin by queentell(f): 9:45am On Jan 18, 2016
Lamidi Adeyemi, the Alaafin of Oyo, state governor, says the late Obafemi Awolowo would join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) “if he reincarnates today”. Speaking when Abiola Ajimobi, Oyo state governor, visited his kingdom to commemorate his 45th anniversary on the throne, the monarch said the APC represents the ideals that Awolowo stood for. He also expressed support for Ajimobi, asking his loyalists to support the governor. “If Awolowo reincarnates today, he will join the APC, because he was a progressive and APC is a progressive and people-oriented party. So, I have no apologies for supporting them,” he said. “I want to, once again, call on the people of Oyo West to embrace the APC.

We can’t gain anything from the opposition. If Ajimobi is not doing well, I won’t support or ask you to queue behind him. Some people sometimes accused me of taking sides with the governor. But the man is doing very well. “I’m saying this with every sense of responsibility and I want to be quoted, we are fully supportive of Ajimobi’s drive to give Oyo state a new lease of life. “He is doing well and I want my people to continue to support him.” The Alaafin also warned those disturbing the peace of his kingdom to turn a new leaf or face the full wrath of the law. On his part, Ajimobi showered encomiums on the king, attributing his cordial relationship with the Alafin to the monarch’s altruism, understanding and sense of balancing in all matters since he became governor. Ajimobi said that their intimacy had continued to surprise many people; especially those he said had predicted that the monarch’s support for him would not last beyond one year.

Politics / Assets Declaration: Customs Top Shots Panic, Storm Conduct Bureau Today by queentell(f): 7:36am On Jan 18, 2016
By Uche Usim and Isaac Anumihe, Abuja

TOP shots of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) are presently confused and are already panicky over last Friday’s directive from their new boss, Col. Hameed Ali (retd) to declare their assets within 14 days.

They will, today, in compliance with that directive, storm the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to declare their assets.

NCS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, told Daily Sun on Sunday that the directive covers all personnel and not just top officers of the service.

“Look at the circular, it was signed by 5:00pm on Friday. The directive was given on Friday. The following day was Saturday.

“Does the Code of Conduct Bureau work on Saturday?”

Prodded further, Adeniyi added: “Tomorrow (today) is Monday. The directive was given on the last working day, which was Friday. We expect compliance starting Monday (January 18).”

His deputy, Mr. Atta told Daily Sun in a telephone interview that the directive is normal.

“There is nothing so special about it…”

Regardless, last Friday, shortly after Ali’s pronouncement, some officers gathered in groups to discuss the new directive at the service’s headquarters in the Wuse Zone 3 District, in Abuja.

One of the officers said the move was allegedly targeted at some people perceived to be loyal to the former Comptroller General, Abdullahi Ande Dikko who is being quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over graft allegations.

Another top customs officer told Daily Sun that the move was targeted at some corrupt officers who acquired wealth in and outside the country.

“We have been told to collect forms tomorrow and we are expected to fill the forms and return same to the bureau. For us, who do not have much because we have nothing to fear but those who have assets in and outside Nigeria…” he said.

COMMANDER of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Major General Okunola, who led his troop to inspect one of the blown up pipelines at Egwa II community in Warri South West, has said the Army will hold community leaders in whose domain such bombing took place responsible for any act of sabotage in their area.

He said that the Federal Government would do all it can to bring the saboteurs of national assets to book as they were already closing in on the criminals.

Okunola said henceforth, security agencies would enforce extant law banning the use of outboard engines with 200 HP and above.

He said the Federal Government would not condone any act of sabotage in the country adding that the act was not only criminal, but, also, capable of undermining national security.

The commander pleaded with government officials and community leaders to give JTF and other security agencies in the region useful information that would lead to arrest of the perpetrators for prosecution.

He said “the pipeline was blown three days ago. We are going to fish out those responsible. It was a massive sabotage and critical to national assets. There is no way we will fold our hands and allow perpetrators to get away with it.

“We do not have our men deployed in the area; that was why they had the opportunity to do it.”

Politics / Biafra: IPOB, Family Members Disown Kanu’s Wife On Change Of Lawyer by queentell(f): 6:53am On Jan 18, 2016
AS the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu is due to appear in court today, his group and family members have distanced themselves from his wife’s plan, Mrs Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, to change his lawyer, Mr. Vincent Obetta.

Deputy Director of IPOB, Mr. Alphonsus Uche-Mefor, who spoke to Daily Sun from London yesterday said IPOB has not taken any decision to change Vincent Obeta as his wife’s lead counsel defending its leader who is standing trial on charges bordering on treasonable felony.

Kanu’s wife had, in a paid advertorial published in a national daily yesterday announced the change of Mr. Obeta who had been lawyer to Kanu with Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofo.

Mrs Okwu-Kanu had claimed that the decision to appoint a new lawyer for her husband was taken at a meeting of the IPOB held on January 9, at Forest Gate, East London.

But Mefor and Kanu’s brother, Mr. Kingsley Kanunta Okwu-Kanu, who also spoke to Daily Sun from Germany, said they were at the said meeting and IPOB never took the decision to change Obeta as the counsel to its leader.

They insisted Obeta has, so far, done very well in the representation of Kanu in court, saying IPOB has no intention to change him now.

Also, in a telephone chat with Daily Sun, Kanu’s siblings, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Chi Kanu, who spoke from their hometown, opposed the change of Obeta who they said has done well as Kanu’s lawyer.

“We are not against any lawyer coming from whatever group to defend Nnamdi, including Mr. Ejiofor, but, he must work in concert with Obeta who has handled this matter from the first day for the sake of continuity and to avoid confusion,” the Kanus said.
