Former Delta State governor, James OnanefeIbori, has filed an appeal in the British Court of Appeal against his 2012 conviction.

A statement by Ibori’s Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, yesterday said Ibori’s counsel informed the Southwark London court on Friday March 17, 2017, that they have filed the appeal on Ibori’s behalf.

The statement said “the court then indefinitely adjourned the on-going proceedings concerning the second confiscation hearing.”

According to the statement, the British Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has, since February 2016 been undertaking a disclosure exercise and “so far substantial material evidencing the police corruption and misconduct has been disclosed."

Atleast 18 people, mainly high school students, have died after a large tree fell on them at a popular waterfall spot
in Kintampo, Ghana, police say.

The students were swimming during a storm when the freak accident happened, local police chief Owusu Boampong said. 22 others were injured and are being treated at local hospitals.

Rescue teams used chainsaws to cut through the fallen tree and free those trapped underneath. An eyewitness said most of those involved were students of the Wenchi Senior High School, but that there were also tourists.

Anukaenyi Bob-Manuel Ogochukwu, a 43-year-old computer instructor has been arrested at the Lagos airport, for importing heroin from Nairobi, Kenya.

Ogochukwu explained that he got involved in drug trafficking because nobody except drug barons offered to help him out of his financial predicament as his sick son is currently on admission in Nairobi on a life threatening ailment.

While under narcotic watch, he excreted 66 wraps of heroin. In his words, “I teach in a computer school at Onitsha, Anambra State. This is my very first time of having anything to do with drugs.

I smuggled drugs to save my sick child. The doctor said that my child has a hole in the heart. I met many people for help but nobody was willing to help me except a drug baron.

My son is currently struggling for survival at the hospital in Nairobi. The baron who is from Tanzania promised to pay me $2,000 for my child’s medical bill. I am very worried about the condition of my son”

Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah, Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, said that no excuse is tenable for crime. “No explanation is tenable for committing crime. Drug trafficking is a criminal offence and the suspect will be charged accordingly.

The suspect’s action only complicated his condition because he is here facing a criminal charge while the responsibility of taking care of his sick son now rest solely on the wife” Abdallah stated. Anukaenyi Bob-Manuel Ogochukwu who is married to a Kenyan lady hails from Anambra State.

A “predator” who groomed two teenage girls online before sexually assaulting them has been jailed for 7 years. Taheeb Udusole, 27, met his victims on social media while pretending to be a 17-year-old boy called, Daniel, who was rich due to his father being an African king.

The unemployed Nigerian offered the girls, aged 14 and 15, gifts and money while he sent taxis to collect them and bring them near his home in south-east London. The victims, who did not know each other, both thought that ‘Daniel’ was their boyfriend and made their allegations to police independently.

Udosole was arrested last May and on Monday pleaded guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court to one count of sexual activity with a 14-year-old and two with a 15-year-old.

He also received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order [SOPO] and will be deported at the end of his sentence. Detective Sergeant Laura Hillier, the investigating officer, said: "Taheeb Udusole is a predator who claimed that he believed the girls were adult because neither arrived in school uniform.

Both girls had told Udusole their age and he continued to force them to have sex regardless. Unaware that they were victims, these girls have gone through a traumatic experience and should be proud of the strength of character they have shown during the investigation and approaching trial.

I hope that today's sentence brings them a measure of comfort and closure and that they can move on with their lives. We cannot be certain that there are not more victims who have suffered from the actions of this man who have not yet come forward. I would urge anyone who has been a victim to contact police immediately by dialling 101."

The Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service has impounded a forty foot container laden with Tilapia Fish from Turkey

Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Customs Area Controller of the Command, Jibrin Musa, disclosed that the importer declared apples as the content of the container before scanning proved it to be 2700 cartons of prohibited frozen fish.

Idegwu Chibueze, 30, has been sentenced to three years in prison for beating Ukpa Joseph, 34, last year, after an
argument over an outstanding debt. Chibueze was charged with “intentional violence with aggravating circumstances.

At about 10:30pm on October 30, 2016, Chibueze and the victim argued about a $500 loan Joseph had not paid back. Chibueze then took a piece of steel and struck Joseph repeatedly until he sustained a broken right collarbone.

Ms. Hope Usang, 25, who leases arms to suspected robbers in Calabar has been arrested by the Cross
River Police Command. The command said it has arrested a female armourer Usang and 21 other suspects who were arrested at different locations across the state.

Former Adamawa state Governor Bala Ngilari, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by Justice Nathan Musa of an Adamawa state High court.

Ngillari was found guilty on all five counts of conspiracy to award contract amounting to the tune of N167,812,500 for the purchase of 25 units of operational official vehicles for the state without compliance with due process.

The judge in his ruling based his conviction of the former Governor on section 58(5) of the Public Procurement Acts, saying “the law hands of the laws are tied to convict any person found guilty of breach of procurement acts to be sentenced to less than five years imprisonment.

He said, “The convict is sentenced to cumulative sentence of five years, cumulatively on all the five counts to any jail in this country of his choice. But, in the meantime, he will be held here in the Yola Prison.”

Ngillari has however said he will exercise his rights to appeal while welcoming the judgement in good faith. “I accept the judgement with good faith without hard feelings to anyone,” he told journalists after the ruling.

The case against Ngillari, who ruled Adamawa following ex-Governor Murtala Nyako, under the PDP, was filed by the ruling APC-government led by Mohammed Jibrilla.
