After 31 days in the kidnappers’ den, the Proprietor of Sure Foundation Polytechnic, Ukanafun Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Idongesit Udom, finally regained his freedom on Wednesday night, with one of his fingers chopped off for failure to pay the N70 million ransom demanded.

A family source disclosed that N5 million ransom was paid before the retired ExxonMobil worker, who was kidnapped in his village, Nneke, on April 9, was released in the early hours of Wednesday, at Aba, Abia State.

The source said: “The kidnappers were angry when N5m was paid to them. They told the family contact that the N5m was for the victim’s welfare. Maybe because they could not get more money, they decided to chop off one of his fingers.

However, the family is happy that he is alive. He is currently receiving treatment in a hospital after being in the kidnappers’ custody for one month. The kidnappers had demanded N500 million ransom from Udom’s family but later reduced it to N70 million after two weeks of negotiation.

At a point, they asked that Sure Foundation Polytechnic be sold to raise the ransom." Contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chukwu Ikechuwu, who confirmed Dr. Udom’s release, added that investigations were still ongoing to track down the hoodlums.

Former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, on Wednesday evening paid a surprise visit to the presidential Villa, for the first time since this administration began as he met with the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo.

The development is coming at a time President Muhammadu Buhari left the country tothe United Kingdom precisely London for a medical follow up consultation on Sunday evening.

Recall, that the former Vice President has been away from public, since he lost as running mate to former President Goodluck Jonathan at the 2015 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

According to news reports, Sambo‎ arrived at Osinbajo’s office at about 4 pm shortly after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by the Acting President.

Osinbajo was said to have stepped out of his office to personally receive his predecessor, and ushered him into his office where they had a brief discussion behind closed doors

Shortly after the meeting, Sambo described the visit as "usual" when he spoke with State House correspondents.

He said,
“I have come to pay a visit to Mr. Vice President and Mr. Acting President. It is a usual familiarization visit. As you know, former Presidents visit Mr. President and former Vice Presidents visit the Vice President. I am happy to see all of you, our good friends. I want to thank you very much for this reception.” Sambo said

A close aide of the former Vice President had claimed that there was nothing strange in the meeting of the two leaders who he described as friends.

The aide said Osinbajo and Sambo had been exchanging invitations, citing an example of the invitation extended to Sambo to attend the ninth annual Bola Tinubu Colloquium which was held on March 28 in Lagos.

The invitation signed on behalf of Osinbajo by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Ade Ipaye, was dated March 20 and addressed to Sambo and his wife.

Ipaye noted in the letter that Osinbajo had been convening the colloquium in the last nine years to play a crucial role in strengthening “the process of national decision - making within the political and social spheres of Nigeria”.

Veteran actress, Joke Silva, has voiced her opinion on the increasing rate of celebrity divorces in recent times and gave insight as to why that is so.

The actress, who has been married to her actor husband for over three decades, revealed that divorce is not more prevalent among celebrities than it is with couples in other professions who are not so popular.

According to her, celebrities seem to be more hit by divorce only because they are in the public eye therefore whatever happens to them is made public. Read what she wrote after the cut...

“It is because the younger generation are very popular because of social media, and so, whatever happens to them becomes news; forgetting that there are as many divorces, there as many separations in other professions such as medical, financial, legal among others. Name any profession; there are so many separations in those as well,” she told New Telegraph.

The mother-of-two fingered social media as the major challenge facing celebrity marriages and advised celebrities to learn how to manage what they put out for others to see, that way they can still keep the important parts of their lives private and secure.

“There are a lot of challenges that are being faced by artistes of this particular generation; and one of those challenges is the social media, which almost doesn’t allow you your life. People of my age, when we were getting all the attention, and we were feeling like we were the best thing, things were different. You need all the attention anyway. For your work to sell, you need that popularity. It goes with the job, so you need that popularity. But after a while, you also get to learn that it can be a double edge sword. So, it is about managing it, appreciating the audience for appreciating your work, but also giving yourself that limit to what aspect of you they can experience.

“In this age of reality shows where nothing seems to be off limit, the new skill that the entertainer has to learn is how much do you give your audience? More so, because you don’t want to be false; like used to happen in the early years of Hollywood where they would create this incredible image, and then it was almost impossible for the performer to live under that image; and a lot of them used to use all kinds of medications just to fit a particular image that was being built around them. Now, we are in the age of social media, so it is learning how to cope with social media, to do the work that social media does, which is to get your work out there, to get your face out there. 47 year old female New York corrections officer opened fire on her 44 year old ex-boyfriend outside a prison in Queens on Monday. According to an eyewitness account, the former couple were arguing outside the Queensboro Correctional Facility on Van Dam Street when she shot at him early Monday morning.

She was reportedly in uniform while her ex was not.

The hail of bullets sent her ex, who is also believed to be a corrections officer, running into the Long Island City complex for cover, according to the . Fortunately, none of the bullets hit him and he is not believed to have suffered any injuries.

The woman reportedly left the scene after the first shooting, then retiurned to unleash multiple shots at her former partner's vehicle.

The woman – who has not yet been identified – then pointed the gun at herself and shot herself in the chest.

She was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where she later died.

An eyewitness, Rafael Macias, said:

"I saw a female corrections officer shooting at a guy. I was making a left turn and the bullet hit the passenger's' side door. I heard six shots in total."

Another eyewitness, Darison Abreu said:

"She was flying down the block." and said the shooter appeared to be silent and calm during the chaos. "She wasn't saying anything. She had a determined look on her face," said Abreu.

"They weren't too far apart, maybe 30 feet. He was running straight. I had my arm on the door when the bullet hit it. I felt the vibration in my arm."

Describing the moment he ran towards her immediately after the guard shot herself, Abreu said:

"She was on her back, face up. Her eyes were a little more than half open.

"She wasn't saying nothing. She was breathing, though. I was trying to see where exactly she was shot, but the other Corrections officers were pushing me back."

The Federal Road Safety Corps has suspended Ayodele Kumapayi, its sector commander in Rivers State, for cutting female officers hair with scissors, during a routine parade exercise on Monday.

The FRSC spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, said that other officers who allegedly participated in that act have been suspended alongside Mr. Kumapayi. He said the sector commander accused the female marshals of carrying long hairdo.

Mr. Kazeem said the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, ordered the errant officers immediate suspension pending investigation into the incident.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has said Zamfara State which started the implementation of Sharia law in Nigeria currently has the highest poverty rate in the country.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Emir of Kano Speaking at the Mo Ibrahim Forum in Marrakesh, Morocco, weekend, Sanusi said many of those who seized religion as tool of getting power were not necessarily better than the rest of the people.

According to him, such people should, however, be given a chance to participate in a democracy, so that they don’t go on pushing a myth that they were not given a chance.

“Give them four years, after sometime people find out that they have not improved education, they have not put food on the table, they’ve not provided healthcare, they vote them out.

So long as you don’t give them a chance to try and succeed or fail, you have a myth of people being denied an alternative that would make their lives better. I think the mistake that many people make is that they simply don’t have the patience to wait four years.

We have had it in Nigeria; people came and said they were implementing Sharia. Zamfara State started Sharia in Nigeria; it has the highest rate of poverty in the country today.

It’s a matter of time for people to realise that this is all deception, this is all politics, this is not religion; it is about politicians appropriating religion as a discourse for getting into power.” Zamfara state implemented Sharia in 1999.
