Health › Do Smoking Bans Work? by raphy(op): 9:49pm On Mar 15, 2007
The smoking of sheesha – scented tobacco – is to be banned in the cafes of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The city's governor says the move is to help bring down high pollution levels.

But some complain it will ruin the atmosphere of the cafes and kill an ancient tradition.

Smoking tobacco has been banned in some other countries. Three years ago, Tanzania stopped it in many public places for health reasons; Kenya and Uganda have since done so too and other countries are considering such legislation.

Are smoking bans a good idea? Should other African nations follow suit? Have the bans worked in East Africa? Are health concerns more important than tradition? Send us your views.

Jokes Etc › The Football Game by raphy(op): 9:29pm On Mar 02, 2007
St. Peter and Satan were having an argument one day about football. This goes on and on with both arguing about who would field the best team.

Satan proposed a game to be played on neutral grounds between a select team from the heavenly host and his own hand-picked boys.

"Very well," said the gatekeeper of Heaven.

"But you realize, I hope, that we've got all the good players and the best coaches."

"I know, and that's all right," Satan answered unperturbed, "we've got all the officials!"

Family › Should Parents Be Blame For Obese Kids? by raphy(op): 9:25pm On Mar 02, 2007
obesity?
Should governments be doing more to tackle the growing rate of obesity around the world or does the buck stop with parents?

From today all adverts for processed snacks and fast food in France will have to carry a health message encouraging people to stay healthy and take regular exercise.

The move affects advertisements on television, radio and billboards and the Internet for processed, sweetened or salted food and drinks. Advertisers who refuse to run the message face a fine of 1.5 percent of the cost of the ad.

Will these messages have an effect? What can be done to stop the rise in childhood obesity? Are parents doing enough to stop their child becoming overweight? Should your government be taking the issue more seriously?

Health › When Pregnat Mom Eats Fish, kids Do Better. by raphy(op): 6:46pm On Feb 18, 2007
LONDON - Women who eat seafood while pregnant may be boosting their children’s IQ in the process, according to new research published Friday in The Lancet.

The results of the study were surprising, say the authors, and contradict American and British recommendations that pregnant women should limit seafood and fish consumption to avoid potentially high levels of mercury. The study relied on mothers’ observations of their children’s development and their reports of their food intake while pregnant.

Mercury is found in small concentrations in fish and seafood, but can accumulate in the body. High amounts of the metal can damage the human nervous system, particularly those in developing fetuses. On the other hand, seafood — including fish — is also a major source of omega-3 fatty acids, essential to brain development.
