'Dont go' has the potential to be a massive hit on a 'commercial' level  but it has to be promoted properly.

' Iyabo' is the stand out track for me, any day, any time.

demo47:
Yeh I heard that the up and coming artists are finding it difficult to get spins on the air, Typically if the song is good, it will get played, but in order to get decent amount of spins on the radio, I hear that the Djs are demanding money,
I guess if you look at it from the Dj's aspect, he has to eat too, but believe me if a song is an overwhelming hit, the Dj has no choice but to play the song as many times without asking for money,

So advice to the artists out there; create an overwhelming hit and you don't have to worry about paying the Dj OR create an Ok song and carry your cash as you deliver the song to the DJ,

The world is just not fair, this is the world we live in
Bamsyle:
We all know a song has to enjoy heavy rotation on air before it becomes a hit. Your song may remain a potential hit for life unless it gets massive public awareness.

I first heard 9ice's Gongo Aso on air in Oct 2007 or thereabouts. As good as the song is, it didn't become a hit until Jan or even Feb 2008. And by the time, it had been played so much ears were going deaf. These DJs/presenters are the bridge to ferry the songs to the listeners cos they create the awareness else your song's unknown. But they abuse their office. So what are we on?
audio:
While i understand that man must wack (including DJ's) there is also an issue of pride. Dj's all over the world take sweeteners. It's part and parcel of the job, but the difference is, they will still do their job. A Dj should feel proud to discover young talent and help break it to the mainstream.

Nigerians tend to be small minded. If a DJ builds a reputation of consistently discovering new acts, he can syndicate his show and possibly sell it or even use his reputation to enter TV (like Jatt).

Instead what tends to happen, is we have to listen to the crapiest, most repetitive records on the planet which have obviously been paid for. Rep your football teamhuhhuh?? What the F*** is that S*** doing anywhere.
It good to know people can see through all this crap. The fact that we are having these dicussions shows that things WILL change. Let small minded people remain small minded.

A journey of 1000 miles starts with a step.

Kennis music doesnt owe anybody anything. It is up to the new cats to change things if they think Kennis are getting it wrong.

In fact it creates a big gap in the market. If Kennis don't want to go out of their way to spot and promote undiscovered talent, its their loss. I don't think Kelly Hansome is better than Tuface, get what i'm saying?

Not sure why guys are hating on them with so much venom embarassed

They have done an awful lot for the naija music industry. Yeah, they made lots of money off artists. Thats what record labels do!!!!! Ask Sunny Ade smiley

If they are too 'old school' in their buisness approach then cool. I predict other record labels will emerge and change the landscape pretty soon in Naija.  cool

MI tends to rhyme words together just becos he can. This makes it all sound 'clever' and 'complicated'. It gets grating after a while and sometimes it can sound like nursery rhymes. Childish. 'Get together' is a typical example.

The chorus is nice but his ryhming structure dey give me headache. His flow in a majority of his songs suffers as a consequence. Also most of his beats make u wanna fall asleep!!Not a bad thing but makes his album seem like 'easy listening' music. Anybody remember the Lighthouse family? Yeah, like that.

But thats his style. Different strokes for different folks. Lets keep it nice and safe. No pun intended. grin

Nothing wrong with 'Area' though. Its one of the best songs out of Naija for me at the moment. YQ nails it!!!!!!!!

I also like 'fast cars' alot.  Is he singing on 'Forever'? If he is, the guy try ohh!!. Nice song.

MI only has one album so its a bit early to already start comparing him with Mode.

@ Rapjunkie. I thought you didn't like Mode9?
Of COURSE I LIKE MODE9!!!!

The only prob i have with Mode is 'deathblow part2'  Rugged didn't reply part 1 so it is what it is.

He has everything it takes to be a national superstar but he needs direction. He needs to stop listening to all these so called heads who don't buy into the music. He needs a new 'musical' direction. We all know he is one of the best ( without doubt!) lyricists in naija.  He can certainly take naija hip hop to a whole new level but he needs to make songs to also connect with the 'local' audience. They are the people who will actually go out AND BUY into his music. He can do this without 'selling' out.

How can you lose credibility because you have  'commercial'  hits. Thats a smart move. Everybody knows Mode 9 can ryhme and is a lyricist. If you doubt him then you get taken out. Ask Rugged wink

But he needs to switch up his style in certain songs and watch the money roll in. His refusal to do that doesnt make sense.

He just needs a cross over hit. Imagine if HE had the 'originality' beat with Faze just on the chorus AND switched up his 'usual Mode 9' style of lyricism and flow? Imagine the possiblities? I know exactly what this guy needs to do and how he can do it. If anybody knows this cat tell him to send me an email and i can hook him up on the downlow. Na so e be.  wink

He certainly has the potential to be considered as better than many known rappers in naija. To say he is already better is a bit of a bold statement. Even i will admit that. Lets wait until he releases his album ( hopefully soon) so we can all judge.

But i no go lie, I like the guys swag, flow, delivery, lyrics e.t.c. My favorite track of his so far is ' Iyabo' because of the the subject matter and the different ways he flows in the same song. Lets face it, we all know girls like that! But he tackles the issue in a way that is entirely fresh and the guy is 100% original.

Please lets try and lend this guy some support. It only helps but elevate the naija hip hop game.

Even if 9ice had acknowledged him or kept one of RXD's verse's on the 'gongo aso' album it could have really helped and propelled him to the mainstream. You never know.

Admittedly his verses are a bit wack grin but thats not the point.

He paid for the beat, spent money on a vid and and got 9ice to appear on it. The guy dey hustle to make am.

Its a shame that 9ice added this beat to his album knowing fully well that the beat was made for RXD.  I mean, he can't say he didnt know, he was in the fu*king video!!!!!

If it was Yankee, 9ice would have to pay a lot of money in compensation. I'm sure RXD must have asked to be 'settled' before approaching the media but if 9ice/ID Cabasa are ignoring him what else can he do?

One of the responses on this thread typifies what is wrong with Nigeria. because its 9ice it doesnt matter how shady his business dealings are. In fact, how dare anybody even bring the matter up? Thats why people go into public office and embezzle with impunity because they know they will not be accountable for their actions. Instead, their community will give them traditional titles for a job well done.

Thats how 9ice's management took money for a show in Dublin knowing fully well he wasn't going to show up and when K16 dissed him nobody could get past the fact that K16 had the balls to do that. Instead, all the reaction was ' how dare he? '

9ice is not a God and he should stop behaving like he is. If I was him, I would call RXD and compensate him. All this adverse publicity is not doing him any good.  embarassed

Bamsyle:
Yeah, I agree on those songs you listed as not being 'hardcore'. But do you know you just listed 3 out of the several joints Mode has? By the time you check all his albums, you'll agree that 90-sumn % of his songs are 'hardcore'. And when an artiste keeps to a particular style 90-sumn % of the time, he tends to generally be labelled with that style.

Of course Rugged goes hardcore too - when he wants to. Infact, his "Thy Album Come" had an overall hardcore sound. He's even got a natural voice for hardcore.

You know, this 'hardcore' thingy can be technical and difficult to define. I think some salient elements tend to make a song what it is - including hardcore or not. It's kinda the overall feel . . . Some artistes are generally regarded as hardcore acts but then they go 'mild' atimes. Biggie, Nas, Pac, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, DMX might be generally regarded as hardcore rappers but they went 'mild' on some joints. Biggie did "Ready To Die" but also did "Missing You" . . .

However, I think 'underground' is the major difference in both cats' overall styles. You would agree with me that Mode is underground. Rugged is mainstream. Or rather, he went mainstream. Not saying either style has any advantage over the other. It doesn't indicate wackness or dopeness. Just stating the obvious.

Punchlines? Nah. Punchlines are never the yardstick of Hardcore Rap.

Let me be a peacemaker here . . .  tongue *Lalaboi should thank me for this*

Sheath your sword and reconcile with Khanye et Russell . . . let's have a peaceful war.

However, when these retards insult me because they don't agree with my opinions thats when it gets ugly with Rapjunkie.

Have you seen the 'gongo aso' freestyle he did?It is clear he is ( or was) a big 9ice fan. If 9ice had let his fans know he wasnt going to the Dublin show ( which he knew weeks beforehand, apparently) then none of this would have ever happened.

Rapj, I don't think there's any hard and fast rule about Hardcore Rap. It doesn't have to be 'gangstar' if that's what you think. Aggression and confrontation - in both sound and lyrics, mostly make up what we call 'hardcore'.

Mode may not do it the way East Coast started or continued it - but I also agree what he's doing can be termed hardcore. Partly the confrontation/brags in his songs, atimes the noise, prolly the in-yo'-face feel in his songs or the no-song-chorus style he adopts might make his songs qualify as that. Several of his songs are like that but "Spazmodic" quickly comes to mind.
I accept your point but I didn't mean that it had to be 'gangsta'. What about ' cry' or 'things fall apart' or even 'talking to you'. Is that 'hardcore' rap? I don't think so.

Also, if Mode is hardcore rap then so is Rugged. whats the difference? Is it because Mode uses more punchlines he is now hardcore rap? His beats are not hardcore anything. I don't mind having debates on any issues but I can also dish insults which is what Khanye Twit and Russell- in- ya- ass- o seem to want from me

I just like the way naija hip hop keeps evolving with more and more talented cats putting their hats in the ring.
