Born in Igboland and sold as a slave to a Bonny trader at the age of twelve, he was named Jubo Jubogha by his first master. He was later sold to Chief Alali, the head of the Opubo Annie Pepple Royal House. Called Jaja by the British, this gifted and enterprising individual eventually became one of the most powerful men in the eastern Niger Delta. The Niger Delta, where the Niger empties itself into the Gulf of Guinea in a system of intricate waterways, was the site of unique settlements called city-states. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Bonny, like the other city-states, gained its wealth from the profits of the slave trade. Here, an individual could attain prestige and power through success in business and, as in the case of Jaja, a slave could work his way up to head of state. The House was a socio-political institution and was the basic unit of the city-state. In the nineteenth century—after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807—the trade in slaves was supplanted by the trade in palm oil, which was so vibrant that the region was named the Oil Rivers area. The Houses in Bonny and other city-states controlled both the internal and external palm oil trade because the producers in the hinterland were forbidden to trade directly with the Europeans on the coast; the Europeans never left the coast for fear of malaria. Astute in business and politics, Jaja became the head of the Anna Pepple House, extending its activities and influence by absorbing other houses, increasing operations in the hinterland and augmenting the number of European contacts. A power struggle ensued among rival factions in the houses at Bonny leading to the breakaway of the faction led by Jaja. He established a new settlement, which he named Opobo. He became King Jaja of Opobo and declared himself independent of Bonny. Strategically located between Bonny and the production areas of the hinterland, King Jaja controlled trade and politics in the delta. In so doing, he curtailed trade at Bonny and fourteen of the eighteen Bonny houses moved to Opobo. In a few years, he had become so wealthy that he was shipping palm oil directly to Liverpool. The British consul could not tolerate this situation. Jaja was offered a treaty of "protection", in return for which the chiefs usually surrendered their sovereignty. After Jaja's initial opposition, he was reassured, in vague terms, that neither his authority nor the sovereignty of Opobo would be threatened. Jaja continued to regulate trade and levy duties on British traders, to the point where he ordered a cessation of trade on the river until one British firm agreed to pay duties. Jaja refused to comply with the consul's order to terminate these activities, despite British threats to bombard Opobo. Unknown to Jaja, the Scramble for Africa had taken place and Opobo was part of the territories allocated to Great Britain. This was the era of gunboat diplomacy, where Great Britain used her naval power to negotiate conditions favorable to the British. Lured into a meeting with the British consul aboard a warship, Jaja was arrested and sent to Accra, where he was summarily tried and found guilty of "treaty breaking" and "blocking the highways of trade". He was deported to St. Vincent, West Indies and four years later, he died en route to Nigeria after he was permitted to return. Ironically, Jaja's dogged insistence on African independence and effective resistance exposed British imperialism and made him the first victim of foreign territorial intrusion in West Africa. The fate of Jaja reverberated through the entire Niger delta. Amazed at this turn of events, the other delta chiefs quickly capitulated. In addition, the discovery of quinine as the cure for malaria enabled the British traders to bypass the middlemen and deal directly with the palm oil producers, thus precipitating the decline of the city-states. King Jaja's downfall ensured a victory for British supremacy, paving the way for the eventual imposition of the colonial system in this region by the end of the century.

The outrageous characters some Nigerian landlords display can make Caliban, the evil monster, to appear a saint! Old Nick, the devil, would be so shocked and embarrassed that there are still people who are more mischievous than him! ![]() 1) Exhorbitant fees: In these present times when many Nigerians are facing serious economic/financial hardship, some landlords would still ask you to pay up to 150,000 Naira for caution and agreement fee!!! The rentage is not even included oh! When dem add rent join am, how man pikin go take survive nah? ![]() 2) Drink money: After paying the caution and agreement fees, some landlords would still ask you to drop money for drinks. If you hear the amount! Sometimes, 30k to 40k! Just for drink? One greedy landlord even asked a client to drop 20k for groundnuts!!! I almost thought there would be a get-together party for all the kids in the neighbourhood with such amount of money for groundnuts! Una go kill person!3) Collecting 2 years rent with nothing less: Nigerian landlords, abeg make una take am easy! The rate at which the rent fee for flats and mini flats in many Nigerian cities is increasing can throw an underemployed fellow off balance! At least, one year rent is okay, considering the fact that house rent is costly these days. Deh nor dey carry house take travel oh! ![]() 4) Charging outrageous fees for old buildings: How can you ask a prospective tenant to pay 650k for a 3 bedroom flat in a house that was built in 1993? Without modern facilities!!! Search your soul; e good for your eyes? I advised him to bring it down because I would not manage such property!5) Turning the entire compound to your personal garage: Some landlords would not allow their tenants to enjoy the slightest level of convenience in a flat they paid through their nose to obtain. You can't park your car inside the building because the landlord's 7 cars have occupied all the available spaces where tenants can park! Depending on the area you stay, by the time you decide to be parking outside, small small children go use your motor body take do slate, notebook and blackboard! ![]() 6) Unnecessary rules: Don't allow your sound system to go beyond 10 decibels! Don't come back later than 8pm (what if the tenant is a banker? ). My landlady in Ilorin told me that she wouldn't want to see a female visiting me wearing trousers! See problem! For this modern world? We know it's not an easy task to build a standard house in most Nigerian cities but the way some landlords act, would even make their tenants prefer a peaceful cell in Kirikiri Maximum to the flats they rented with their hard earned money ![]() You can share your experience! ![]() |

Today, it seems what we all grew up to know as romantic relationship between members of the opposite sex, that's fueled by genuine passion, is slowly dying away. In fact, what some of us experienced as 'puppy love' during our secondary school days stands a better chance to be called a relationship compared to what many young people go into in these present times. These days, most people go into relationships with various selfish motives! Today, the mindset of the average guy out there is just to bleep every single girl he is able to lay his hands on as soon as the slightest opportunity turns up!!! He wouldn't even give a hoot about the personal qualities of the girl. In fact, if they could go to somewhere nearby to have sex immediately after the exchange of names and phone contacts, he would appreciate it. Sex is now totally overrated!!! If you meet a girl as a guy and you have not made love to her within the first week of knowing her, there's this self-consciousness in you that tells you that you are messing up! Even your friends will tell you that you are effing up!!! This makes relationship so useless and irrelevant! Now, if the motive of having an affair with a girl is just to make love as soon as possible, why not patronize prostitutes and save yourself the stress? The young girls are not left out! Most of these girls see it as a very big opportunity to place their burdens on your head as soon as you ask for their phone contact! It's the attitude of girls that behave this way that necessitated a situation where guys try as much as possible to sleep with any girl they meet as soon as possible; according to them, they wouldn't want to lose on 'both sides'. As the days go by, relationship is getting empty. This is the reason why many relationships among young people (especially, from 20yrs to 28yrs) don't last. REASON: They involve sex and materialism even before they get to study their individual characters or traits! You need to be friends first! To the young girls: No sane man will respect you when you place your personal problems on him as soon as he exchanges phone contacts with you; if you do that, his next step will be to sleep with you!!! That's what happens when the rice is still on the stove and you have already started looking for spoon! ![]()
