Yesterday, I was unable to log into CARFAX because my account had been suspended. It was reinstated today with a warning that it will be monitored since they felt the volume of use was too high. They are concerned I am using the service far beyond the scope of "personal use."

I’ve forwarded an inquiry to see how I can access the same volume of information without running into trouble and am currently awaiting their response. Will provide an update once I hear back.

The CARFAX Buyback Guarantee protects you from unknowingly buying a used car with Dept of Motor Vehicles -reported incidents (salvage, fire, flood damage, odometer problems or lemon history). This coverage lasts one year and is transferable. As far as I know, this guarantee is not applicable once cars are exported from North America because their info comes from DMVs mainly in the US. Essentially, CARFAX is saying that as long as the issue was reported to a Dept of Motor Vehicles, they will make the info available in their report.

A car has a clean title when there's no issue of salvage, rebuilt, odometer rollbacks, etc.

TOTAL LOSS means the cost to repair after an accident exceeds 75% of the pre-accident value of the car.

SALVAGE - In most US states, salvage means vehicle is not road worthy and some states would regard the vehicle as junk.

REBUILT title - Issued when a car is repaired and has passed some sort of road worthiness inspection after being salvaged. Refurbished parts are often used for rebuilt title repairs.

Not Actual Mileage title/Odometer issues mean the current mileage shown on the car is likely inaccurate and actual should be higher. Pls see my post to nvtf above for a clasic example of this.

By default, if a car has no title problems you can assume the title is clean and go ahead with the usual comprehensive Mechanic's inspection.

Summary - Car was in an accident a couple of weeks after purchase late 2007. Severe damage reported as a result of rear impact and possible airbag was deployed. Car title is salvage, issued Dec/07 and car was imported to Nigeria in May/08 from NY.

Unfortunately, CARFAX has not provided any details about the accident. Autocheck is another vehicle history agency, they may or may not have info about the accident.

The accident has had no effect on the title so it was probably moderate or even minor. Sure, it would be nice to know details but I'd be comfortable with this car even not knowing - the important thing is that title is clean.

I'm sure the police report would provide details but I have no idea how you'd go about obtaining that - assuming it's available to the public.
