Atiku For President 2019: Let Us Give Him A Chance Like We Did For Buhari!

If there is a trending buzzword now disturbing the Nigerian cyberspace lately, it is definitely #Atiku2019 or #Atikulate these were coined by the many lovers of Waziri Adamawa who felt disenchanted and disgusted by the rudderless style of leadership that keeps spreading poverty at an alarming rate by the one man show Buhari's government.

Who Is Atiku?

Born on November 25, 1946, Alhaji Atiku needs no introduction to those in the political sphere of Nigeria, he was the man who slugged it out to the last kobo against Chief M.K.O Abiola (of blessed memory) at the 1993 Social Democratic Party (SDP) Convention at Jos, it took the efforts of Party Stalwarts to talk Atiku out of proceeding further to please allow Abiola a chance to the Party's Presidential Ticket. Indeed, as a refined Gentleman he was, he obliged and M.K.O/Kingibe emerged as the Party's flagbearer the rest from there is history. Who is Atiku? He is an astute businessman who caught his business savvy early in life as a trader, by dint of hardwork he built his first house at age 15! Not deterred, Atiku proceeded in his zeal to become somebody in life by venturing into a career in Custom and rose through the ranks as Deputy Comptroller General before he retires and off fully into private business where Alhaji Atiku had built a business empire that employs not less than 400,000 employees either directly or indirectly across the business strata of Nigeria where the Turakin Adamawa had vested interests.

Buhari's Helping Factor!

It is obvious to the blind that Buhari is no longer a selling product against 2019 as a result of too many abandoned promises, jaundiced views on sensitive economic matters,  flip-flop decisions and killing policies robbing more from the poor and creating unbearable hardship on the innocent masses. Alhaji Atiku may not need to campaign too much with wordy platitudes as Buhari's government is already directly and indirectly campaigning for him. Under Buhari, it can be deduced that we now live in a Country where there is capital flights, soldiers and other security operatives cannot guarantee security,  doctors now embark on strikes and perform abysmally due to poor training and supports, lawyers are victimised to forcefully support this current government and even justices are served unjustly against perceived enemies of the government,  journalists now doctor news just to deceive the unwary masses as a matter of fact, Nigeria is operating under a state of lawlessness!

Why The Atiku Factor?

Nigeria at this juncture needs a helping hand to redirect the trend of things as they have since degenerated and if there is anyone I can think of as the right force to steer the ship of State to a clearer Coast that has to be Alhaji Atiku, a tested politician of high repute who brought in the best Economic Team into the political annals of government between 1999-2007 while serving as Vice President to President Olusegun Obasanjo, he has proven beyond palpitation of the hearts that he is an astute businessman with vested interests in education, oil and gas, foods production, farming, importation and exportation, printing businesses and others.  It is crystal clear now that beyond unnecessary primordial sentiments that "Atiku Cannot Become President" being chanted in some quarters on the ground of "unestablished corruption charges" against his person will not fly because the people are wiser now.

Alhaji Atiku needs to bring his business savvy to bear on governance in Nigeria, it is time to give someone who is detribalised and have his business tentacles across the Country employing; the Northwesterners, Northeasterners, Northcentrals, Southwesterners, Southeasterners and Southsoutherners as his workers spreading wealth in the process. We need an Atiku to run Nigeria not as a fiefdom or an autocratic setting but a going concern with Nationalistic Colouration the Turakin Adamawa is known for. We need an Atiku to being his wealth of experience to create more jobs being a passionate job creator from his early life. We need the Atiku factor to stop the barriers of servitude innocent Nigerians have been subjected to over the years especially under this current administration.  We need to push the frontiers of bigotry, tribalism, underdevelopment and wastefulness backward and push forward a working system that will pedestal Nigeria's economic stature as a giant before the comity of Nations. We need the Atiku factor to galvanise the economic potentials of this great Nation back to working ways like we used to. We need the Atiku factor to suppress cabals toying with the future of this great Country but a bold individual as Atiku with the masses in his political calculations is all what we need. Nigeria cannot afford another 4 years of Monkey dey work, Baboon dey chop style of government as being run by Buhari one man show. It is too certain that Nigeria needs a New Man at the Helm of Affairs and that New Man is definitely, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, GCON, Waziri Adamawa. #Atikulate 2019!

The Determining Factors!

No thinking about it, the Buhari's government made lots of promises that are yet to be met despite going almost 3 years into their administration. All we need from Waziri Adamawa is based on 6 Pivotal Determining Factors which are;

(1) Corruption - How Do You Intend To Fight Corruption And Yield Great Economic Results For The Country Sir?

(2) Unemployments - This is like a curse and cankerworm to Nigeria's development when there is a massive brain drain and insolvency of her working populations, Sir, How Do You Intend To Create A Working Ambience That Will Bring About A Worthy Employment Revolution Among The Teeming Working Populations Currently Jobless?

(3) Insurgency - This is one area The Buhari's administration failed woefully more
Ilke just window-dressing their so-called fights against Boko Haram and Fulani Herdsmen. Sir, What Do You Have On The Table To Curb This Menace Once And For All Especially In Your Geographical Zone of Northeast?

(4) Power Supply - This is the most embarrassing aspect of the governments that had rule us since 1960 and even more annoying when you have a current government that promised to make Power Sector a top priority yet we seem to have lost it all as darkness seems to be the order of the day whereby Nigerians now brand a sitting Minister in the Ministry as "Minister of Darkness"! Sir, your University in Adamawa is run on 24/7 Power Supply, How Do You Intend To Revamp The Power Sector To Give Nigerians Adequate Power Supply of At Least 19 Hours A Day?

(5) Lack Of Respect For Rule Of Law - There is no doubt that one of the most trampled and rubbished arm of government is the judiciary where rules are subverted and flagrantly disobeyed especially by the Executives which gave birth to the ill-adviced  mantra of "a benevolent dictator is what we need" in order to fight corruption yet the same "Benevolent Dictator" is entertaining and harbouring corrupt individuals in his cabinet. How Do You Intend To Stem The Tide Of The Tension Within The Judiciary?

(6) Application Of Federal Character In Portfolio Sharing - This is very sensitive going by the tribal Colouration of Nigeria. If by God's Grace You Emerge As The Next President Of The Federal Republic Of Nigeria, How Do You Intend To Balance Up Appointments That Will Be Bereft Of Lopsidedness?

Swift response to the above posers can go a long in shaping the direction of how the forthcoming Primaries of the PDP and the Presidential Elections will eventually go come 2019! Alhaji Atiku had paid his dues in the political wilderness of Nigeria, he has been tested as the Vice President and if voted as our President come 2019, he won't disappoint Nigerians.

I agree in totality with the submission and conclusion of Dr. Kperogi. The support for Buhari in the North is far more than just political support. Atiku is a very rich and popular politician but he doesn't command the kind of heroic support that Buhari enjoys. The calculation of Atikus camp is to win bloc votes from the south and share the votes from north central. Very faulty assumptions as Buhari will win significantly in north central and south west historically doesn't even vote en bloc. If they will start in 2015, it wont be in favour of an Atiku/igbo vp against Bubari/OsinbJo. Atiku stands no chance in 2019!
Are you a graduate at all? Do you reason before gassing out? People are living the most miserable lives ever under this despotic, lanky thing you are here saying the usual jargons about one miserable Buhari. Because you are a mallam doesn't mean some of us are not in the know up North. You still want Buhari 2019? I ask again, are you normal, living, feeding or just shallow?

Some of us didn't know what the word bigotry truly meant, till Buhari came to power.
Clannishness/parochialism was taken to new depths under him.

Record numbers of Nigerians are now committing suicide due to the untold hardship he has unleashed.
Incompetence does not have to look further than Buhari.

IditaBoy:
As a student of History, I have taken courses in military in politics of Nigeria. By this, I have been exposed to numerous books. I have also spent considerable time on NL, a year after NL began soecifically, to have followed the debates on this same topic.

Wale Ademoyega’s account is more of a chronicle/primary source that requires a lot more vetting and reconstruction by a Historian. Ademoyega’s work is prone to being subjective.

Going by every sources out there, primary & secondary; military & civilian; citizens & expats as well as considering the socio-political feel preceding and after the coup, any Historian worth his/her salt or any person with an analytical mind knows it was an Igbo coup - masterminded and executed by the Igbo to put Nigeria at the feet of the Igbo.

Zik’s speech, constitutional conferences, ethnic unions all point towards the ideology of the Igbo prior to independence - this same mentality was displayed in Achebe’s last work.

The executors of the coup, victims and survivors of the coup, the beneficiary of the coup, the pardon of the executors of the coup and beneficiaries of the civil service integration are all Igbos.

A handful of non-Igbo sprinkled here and there with minor roles does not change anything. Everyone knows it is a Igbo coup, else the North would not have rolled out a Northern coup in response and continue to exude hatred/dislike towards the Igbo till today.

You are the one who needs to put down Ademoyega’s text and study papers of the Nigerian state’s politics and social system prior to independence to see a trend of the sense of superiority the Igbo carried into 1966.

It is also on record that after the coup, Igbos in the North took to the streets singing anti-Hausa songs and pro-Igbo songs.

Research is the key thing here. Don’t read books tilted towarss your preconceived expectation, read everything that says what you don’t like and what you like, compare texts and sources then draw a conclusion.
Respect bro you are an egghead. I share your sentiments here totally.

Politics › History And The Future Of Decree 34 Of 1966! by Ratello(op): 8:40am On Nov 24, 2017
By Eric Teniola |   04 September 2017   |   3:57 am

On assumption of power, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree 1966. Decree No 1 dated January 17, 1966 but not published in the Official Gazette until March 4, 1966.

Of all the decrees enacted in Nigeria, none is more controversial than Decree No 34 of 1966. It was promulgated on May 24, 1966 by then Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (1924-1966) . It was called Unification Decree while some critics at that time labelled it the De-unification Decree.

It was the decree that started the death of regionalism – an issue which is still generating controversy till now. Although the next head of State General Yakubu Gowon repealed the Decree 34 on August 31, 1966 through Decree 9, a large portion of the Decree is still effective till today.

General Gowon further compounded it by promulgating Decree 14 of 1967 which broke Nigeria into 12 states and provided for military governors for each state. With Decrees 34, 8 and 14 regionalism was finally buried.

On assumption of power, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree 1966. Decree No 1 dated January 17, 1966 but not published in the Official Gazette until March 4, 1966. He then issued Public Order Decree No 33 dated May 24 1966 which dissolved eighty-one political associations and twenty-six tribal and cultural associations.

At the early stage of his tenure, he appointed a three-man advisory team made up of Chief Francis Nwokedi, a Permanent Secretary, Dr. Pius Charles Nwabafor Okigbo (1924-2000) and Colonel Patrick Anwunah, who later became Chairman and Head of the Orientation Committee at that time.

He replaced the then Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Taslim Olawale Elias (1914-1991) with Chief Gabriel Chike Michael Onyiuke (SAN), former Director, Public Prosecution, Eastern Nigeria (1960-1965) from Nimo in the present Anambra state.

In a speech to the nation on January 28 1966, he denounced the evils of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa regime and outlined necessary reforms. ”All Nigerians”, he declared,” want an end to regionalism. Tribal loyalties and activities which promote tribal consciousness and sectional interests must give way to the urgent task of national reconstruction. The Federal Military Government will preserve Nigeria as one strong nation.” He then went on to promise “administrative reforms” and referred specifically to several matters in which regional as well as personal interests were known to have had decisive influence. These were official appointments, public investments, and the universities. He promised that in the public services, efficiency and merit will be the criteria for advancement”. That industrial development would be “coordinated to avoid wasteful duplication of industrial projects”, and that the universities would be “re-orientated to serve the genuine interest of our people.”

Immediately after the speech two Governors kicked against the proposal. They were, Major General David Akpode Ejoor (83) from Ovu in the present Delta State, then serving as the Military Governor of the Mid-Western region and Major General Hassan Usman Katsina(1933-1995), who was then serving as Governor of the Northern region.

Lt. Col. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1933-2011), Military Governor of Eastern Region welcomed the decree while Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi (1926-1966), Military Governor of Western Region never commented on the promulgation of the decree.

Lt-Col Ejoor was reported as saying that the ’National Government’ set up by the army was the prelude to ‘the reintroduction of a unitary form of government’ and insisted that it would create future problems. Shortly afterwards, the Supreme Military Council announced that a senior government official, Mr. Nwokedi, had been asked to consider and to report to the Supreme Military Council on the establishment of ‘an administrative machinery for a united Nigeria’ and the ‘unification of the Public Services and Judicial Services.’

In his own speech on February 19 at the Kaduna Airport, the Governor of Northern region, Lt-Col. Hassan Katsina said he was not aware as a member of the then Supreme Military Council of the modalities for the proposed National Government. ”I am afraid the egg is about to be broken”.

On February 21 1966, General Aguiyi-Ironsi again addressed the nation on the issue. He said: “On the question of the political future of the country, the experiences and mistakes of the previous governments in the Federation have clearly indicated that far-reaching constitutional reforms are badly needed for peaceful and orderly progress towards the realization of our objectives. I have already touched on some of the major issues involved in recent broadcast to the nation. It has become apparent to all Nigerians that rigid adherence to ‘regionalism’, was the bane of the last regime and one of the main factors which contributed to its downfall. No doubt, the country would welcome a clean break with the deficiencies of the system of government to which the country has been subjected in the recent past. A solution suitable to our national needs must be found. The existing boundaries of governmental control will need to be re-adjusted to make for less cumbersome administration.’

As a follow-up on May 25, General Aguiyi-Ironsi promulgated the Constitution (Suspension and Modification)(No. 5) Decree 1966. Decree No. 34 (the ‘Unification Decree’).

After the promulgation, the country was thrown into turmoil which led to demonstration particularly in many parts of Northern Nigeria at that time. On his return to Kaduna on May 27, Col. Hassan Katsina was besieged with demands for an explanation. It was feared that in a unified service, Northerners would be at a disadvantage. It was no consolation that the Decree provided for the delegation of appointments and promotions, except the most senior, to Provincial Civil Service Commissions.

With its authority challenged and shown to be weak, at least in large parts of the North, the National Military Government had little option but to proffer its assurances and to explain its actions. The Supreme Military Council met on 7 and 8 June 1966 and issued the following statement:

“The public must not be led to confuse the Military Government with government by a civilian regime under a constitution approved by the people. Nobody will expect the present Military Government to cease to function until new constitution has been approved or to be compelled to operate the old system of government with its obvious weakness. It cannot be too seriously emphasized that the Military Government while in office can only run the government as a military government under a unified command. It cannot afford to run five separate governments and separate services as if it were a civilian regime. Final decisions on the territorial structure of the country and the public services will be matters for the Constituent Assembly and the referendum.”

The Supreme Military Council also decided that General Aguiyi-Ironsi should invite traditional rulers from all parts of the country to a meeting to be held in Lagos as soon as possible and that the Military Governors would immediately summon similar meetings in their own Regions. This was presumably an attempt to improve the channels of communications. There had in fact already been a meeting of Northern Emirs and Chiefs in Kaduna on 4 of June and the Military Governor had been given a list of grievances and recommendations to take to Lagos. The Emirs and Chiefs met again on June 16 to receive General Aguiyi-Ironsi’s reply.
Sadly on 29 July 1966, General Aguiyi-Ironsi and the Military Governor of Western Region, Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi were murdered in Ibadan during a meeting with the traditional rulers from all parts of the country.

Teniola, a former director in the presidency, lives in Lagos.

The British colonial Masters purportedly carved out a large chunk of land for the Northern part for a pilitical reason though being a semi arid region had an expansive patched plains however down here south we have thick vegetation that are not readily accessible hence it appears we are smaller but in reality the Southern part being more of a coastal area than the North ought to be the place with the largest land mass with its surging populations.
