the first argument against software/technology is garbage in garbage out - yes a layman may be able to use software to do some designs, but if it is not backed up with experience and industry knowledge, you may get unusable /useless results. software is not a replacement but a complement. you must have a clear knowledge of the basics and an idea of the expected result, the legal requirements, the institutional standards

for large projects core professionals are required. you can probably get away with an experienced and principled electrician/plumber/bricklayer on a domestic build; it becomes more risky on a commercial build. and one big projects, everyone wants to ensure the blame for any eff up is spread widely, so the more the merrier.

Atleast now we now we know your a civil engineer.I understand what you've been trying to say.In the construction industry collective effort is required for big commercial,residential and industrial projects. For small project we can let go.These days brickayers in my area now call themselves engineers, they even supervise 3 Storey building projects .Most of them dont even know who a QS is,I tell them I am an Engineer instead .Sometimes they even bring landsurveying projects for me, thankGod For my survey class back in school,I quickly rent a theodolite and get to work on the project.
Sometimes they even bring architectural jobs, sharp guy I collect the job grab my mouse and I get to work with AUTOCAD with OFFSET in my head,then I create 3D WITH REVIT OR DREAMPLAN.

Lol I laugh you. let me shock you my Aunt is a principal Architect in a federal govt ministry (infrastructure ) my dad was a one time HOD of the building technology dept and former Dean of a the Environmental studies faculty LASPOTECH and currently runs a facility management firm, my mum retired secretary elect elect DEPT GATEWAY POLY IGBESA.
My senior Brother is also an architect just finished his MSC....My dads sister civil engineer. Current runs her construction co in BAYELSA.

do you know chinese are now building robot and drones with AI that would be able to supervise construction projects. Soon the civil engineering profession would soon become extinct. Does that mean civil engineers would soon become irrelevant NO.

So because of QS PRO, primus estimates and other estimating software A WHOLE. QS PROFESSION CANNOT DIE.

there was this bizarre claim where we would pay for materials delivered to site, and still be expected to pay full price for finished product. the QS kept saying that was the standard and that if i was a QS i would understand . maybe you guys could explain that standard to me ?

For the types of jobs that we discuss here mostly, that profession is a complete waste.

Now, for financed buildings, joint builds, commercial builds then an argument can be made.

I've heard of a unique situation though from Hajj where the HOA is asking for a QS.

this is the typical workflow in my office
PM prepares project brief /proposal/scope
architect prepares drawings.
discipline engineers prepare drawings and boqs
PM reviews for adequacy, prepares cost estimate etal

QS does not feature in the workflow. even worse is the fact that we had a QS some years back who kept on giving us poorly done estimates that messed us up in the field. to date i still have no idea how the QS lifted quantities, given the horrible variations.





you see. what is funny is your rank hypocrisy. you first start calling out others demanding to know if they are a QS, then you come out boasting you do QS, Architect builder contractor as 'hustle'. by yourself you are admitting that your profession is dying, otherwise you would not be doing the same thing [taking up the work of other professionals ] you were bitching about a few posts ago.

Back to your answer.The QS your company employed no sabi. But when a QS is talking the other professionals would calm down and listen because a company can run into debt if a QS sneezes.
I dont know who your CEO IS but by worldwide standard every project needs a cost professional from the design to post construction stage.

Industry wise....the Architect remains the No.1 in any project and every other follows.
But every professional as regarding construction works is very relevant.

For certain reasons people make use of short cuts to avoid paying certain fees and you'll not see such in an organised environment.

You cannot bypass the architect on major projects. The architect is usually the project manager. You can easily bypass the QS. I do not need a QS to prepare boqs. You can lift or export bom information from Electrical, civil, mechanical etc drawings.

yeh mogbe project manager, that's a wrong info.True you cant bypass an architect Only a few architects with experience can manage a project . But if you put a QS ON THE PROJECT even if its just 3years experience YOU ARE GOOD TO GO.

Three unemployed men, who allegedly sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl, were yesterday brought before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Michael Fadipe, 28, Sunday Chukwunero, 26 and Dotun Obajuluwa,22, were arraigned before Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja on a three-count charge of conspiracy, indecent assault and rape.

Prosecuting Inspector Chinalu Uwadione told the court that the defendants committed the alleged offences on May 25 around 8pm, at Fagba area in Agege.

He said they conspired with two others at large and one Fela Domeh, who accosted and threatened her with a knife.

According to the prosecutor, the teenager was on her way to buy noodles for her mother from the next street, but they led her to Domeh’s room and had carnal knowledge of her.

“The victim was threatened with a knife and forced into a hidden dark room wheushe was raped in turns by the trio,” Uwadione said. Chief Magistrate Adelaja admitted each defendant to N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum. The case continues on October 9.

BUT HE ASKED FOR ESTIMATE WHICH IS CALCULATED USING BUCKETS and daily labour rate (8hours/day)although some painters charge PERSQM.

After reading through all the comments here, I can but laugh about the cost being speculated.
Let us even take a 3m by 7m pool for example.
Your excavation cannot be less than 1m offset round the perimeter and the depth of excavation of 2meters. So the area to be excavated is 9m by 5m with a depth of 2m.
Volume to be excavated is 9*5*2= 90cubic meter. Three times the volume excavated for a septic tank and the cost if excavating is approximately 40k for septic tank. How on earth will the cost of excavation be 35k.
2)also if your are not doing a beam to receive the slab you will definitely do a screed on the floor to receive you reinforcements for slab to prevent corrosion. A floor screed of 50mm thick. 7*3*/0.05m= atleaat nothing less than 50k will go into this for cement,sand and labour.
I even forgot to talk about setting out getting lines pegs and profile boards, nails say 10k.
Your reinforcements requirements can't be less than 2tons, and I guessed engineers in the house knows what the cost of a ton is now, and do not forget rebar worker wages.
Your concrete requirement is 7*3*.2 =4.2cubic for the slab, while for the Walls is 2(7+3) *2*.23=9.2cubic meter. Total volume if concrete required is 9.2+4.2=13.4 cubic. For grade 30 you cannot get it lesser than 35k/cubic meter.
Also whatever type of additive you want to use crystalline is the best type of additive for swimming pools, whether Dr fix it product, concrete logistic or advance concrete product it is very important you add additives to your concrete, less I forget if you want to cast the slab before the Wall you will definitely need water bar as well.

Your plumbing works and electrical works skimmers,pipping pumps,filters water treatment etc. This will definitely cost you above a million.
For tiling, I saw 150k somewhere ago, what is that for. The floor area is 21 square meter while the Walls is 40square meter, total of 61square meter, you need to factor 5%waste into tiling which brings it to 65squaremeter. For mosaic tile it is about 6000/sqm while for normal 125 by 250mm size you should be able to see 4-5k good Spanish or Italian tile not China. If you do your arithmetic you will have between 300k for tile alone, what of cement, sharp sand for floor screeding, plaster sand for wall rough plastering to receive tile and grouting cement and also labour cost at 800/sqm. The total tiling will be between 500-600k.
Also factor in constigency (unforseen expenses)
Whichever way it can't cost less than 4million.

CONC IS 31K/CUM max. Tiling is N2000-2500/sqm (bidding rate. )

2. Can we have honest review of the following mid-range paints? namely, finecoat, shield, eagle, value, superior, prestige, princess, president et al. In terms of longevity for both harsh internal and external environment.

the drawing of the structure above is not handy to know some details concerning the building. However we have to run some check on the foundation to know its capacity and more.

Considering the foundation dept, the pillar iron bar/size and also the concrete pillar, so we decided to make it a storey of four flats. There we go...

so what kind of advice do you need now am a quantity surveyor and also a contractor
