Science/Technology › Re: The Smart Meter And How It Is Being Hacked by Raymondluv(m): 8:36am On Aug 04, 2015 |
cybelink: A smart meter, according to regulatory authorities, is an advanced meter (usually an electric meter) that records the consumption of electric energy in intervals of an hour or less and communicates that information at least daily back to the utility for monitoring and billing purpose. Smart meters are widely used in most nations of the world that make use of electricity as a source of power. Users of electricity are billed with this smart meter based on their consumption. As a resident of Ibadan, Nigeria, I’ve grown accustomed to the idea of knowing that the Power holding Company of Nigeria (formerly National Electric Power Authority) distributes a monthly bill of your total consumption each month. For a house rented by four People, One may not be a stay-lite at home, She/he may be a business type, on returning back home, She/he might have been away for 3 weeks on a business trip, this person has not been consuming electricity for weeks but yet is being given a high bill, this is due to the frequent and the lavish usage of the electric power by his/her neighbors, this is simply done by the usage of freezers, microwave ovens, Pressing irons, electric cookers, Electric kettles, Washing machines, Computer etc., these electronics tend to consume more electric power. The Introduction of Smart Meters in Nigeria Few years back, after the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) was sold by the Federal Government of Nigeria to a private electricity company which is Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). After the Power Holding Company of Nigeria acquired the National Electric Power Authority, it was then given its name “PHCN” which still exists till today. Few years after the Power Holding Company of Nigeria acquired the National Electric Power Authority, it introduced the Smart Meter, in the days of NEPA, the analogue meter was being used by the consumers of electricity. The Power Holding Company of Nigeria distributed the newly introduced smart meter across the country, but due to the large population of Nigerian electric power consumers, the smart meter didn’t circulate, most people didn’t have access to it. But these days, if you need to get a smart meter in Nigeria, some say You have to get it with money while some others say it’s free. Benefits of the Smart Meter • No more cutting of electric cables wires • No cheating (You pay for what You use) • No more reconnection fee • You — Your meter whenever You are in need of power • No one will penalize You for not buying a card Hacking the Smart Meter The Smart meters themselves are not impregnable fortresses (The meters are subjected to being hacked). Smart meters are hacked in many countries of the world. The smart meter was hacked in Puerto Rico. Another recent example of smart meter hacking was demonstrated by Mike Davis, a security consultant, He reversed-engineered a meter that was bought on E-bay and installed a computer program that replicated itself across the wireless network and blocked the utility company as it went. The perpetrators of this act were said to have hacked into the smart meter using an optical converter device connected to a laptop, allowing smart meters to connect with the computer. The hackers were able to change the settings for recording power consumption using software available on the internet after making a connection. This method does not require the removal or disassembly of the smart meter. There are also various ways by which a smart meter can be fooled. The introduction of the smart meter was basically to curb electricity theft still there are some gurus that hack into it. The following are some suggestions made by professionals on how to fool smart meters. 1. Attacking the smart meter’s memory: A needle is inserted to intercept the electrical signal in the memory chip. 2. Using a Digital Radio: A hacker who has cracked the meter’s programming can use security codes from the software in the chip to get on the network and issue commands. 3. Spread malware to the network: David baker, a director of services for IO Active, a research company, designed a virus that can replicate itself in other meters and enable a hacker to shutdown the system remotely. Davies showed that if his virus were to be released in a location where all the houses were fitted with the same brand of meter, it could spread to 15,000 homes in one day. 4. Accessing the Meter: This method can be done through a wireless device. Using a software radio programmed to mimic a variety of communication devices; the hacker can listen in on wireless communication in the network and guess overtime how to communicate with the meter. 5. Revering and Engineering the smart meter: It is a cheap method, but the process will require a good knowledge of integrated circuits. Note: The key point of discussing how to fool the smart meter. The intention of writing this article is basically to curb electricity theft. Author: Adefisoye Ifedamola For: www.234electricity.com ©2012 pls i want to knw hw to bypass a prepaid meter |

kosby001: The iSsue relating to your meter can be view in two ways. First, its very possible your neighbour is tapping 4rm d supply cable which supplies light to ur apartment. If that is the case den u need to consult electicians within u to trace d sources of the both of u supplies. Secondly, its very possible also that you ve an outstanding debt on ur account while u were using the analog meter. The prepaid meters been installed now allows ones outstanding debt 4rm d initial analog meter to be transferred to the prepaid. You can confirm if your meter is having an outstanding debt by consulting ur pay point, or checking ur print out slip indicating any "aux" word wic is 4rm "aux 1-4" depending on the rate of your debt. But if the latter isn't applicable, then I believe you consult an electrician or visit your service provider for more enquiries. the man dont use to recharge is meter instead of decreasing is meter unit number is increasing yesterday it was 2 and today it now 5 dnt knw d tricks he use |

sunboy: Bros, from my own experience. If you want a real stress-free BB, go for Bold4 #shikena Bought mine new over 1year now, it works perfect. No damage, no repairs, no restarts, no battery issues.
Note: Never buy a branded brand-new BB, what I mean is don't go to buy new fones and they are AT&T, Verizon, Tmobile etc even though its new please avoid such fones, they are always 2-3k cheaper than the new unbranded ones.
About slot, I noticed most phones from slot are branded, I don't even buy from them again ever since I bought a bad nokia from them until a friend took me to dallas when E5 came out then.
Since then I buy my phones from Dallas communications, ask anyone about Dallas in Ikeja. Dallas is even cheaper than Slot. Slot go remove earpiece of some fones, dallas always intact.
Not advertising for them oo, jes from my experience. I'm posting this with my 1yr+ bold4. Still as clean as its only 2months old, people begging me to sell to them whenever I'm ready to sell bt unfortunately no BB yet meets bold4 durability, reliability and ruggedity standard. which version of bold 4 did u now buy |

engrchux: My dear, my candid opinion; stay away from Bold 5. I'm a tech geek & I've fixed a lot of BBs & I can tell u that the most frequent prob with bold 5 is firmware prob. It just goes off & won't come up again no matter what u do. I presently have one in my custody I've been working on 2 no avail. It doesn't matter if its brand new or fairly; firmware ish doesn't know whether its brand new or used, perhaps that wud matter if u're talkin abt hardware problems. I'm not saying it happens to all bold 5 users but its better if u stay clear. RIM admitted to the fact that bold 5 has a peculiar firmware glitch. I'm using a bold 4 & I've been very pleased with its performance. is bold 4 is the camera clear |

cabsco: Spirit FM is a real, tuned over-the-air FM radio app that doesn't require internet access, it's an app developed my Mike Reidand and works with many android devices. The app works both on rooted and non rooted Android phones and your device doesn't need to have pre-installed FM radio before it can work. On most devices that doesn't support or have FM radio, you can use this app to gain access and unlock FM radio on your phone. Though, on some old model of samsung, htc and motorola you'll need to have root before it can work.
Spirit FM 2 was recently released which works seamlessly with HTC One (M8), The interface is easy to understand, there are lot of tweaks this app offer, you can record while listening to a program in any format, the recordings is stored in your Memory card. It has RDS, AF (auto frequency), visualizer and a widget which you can place on your homescreen.
You can force your radio sound output to stereo which sounds good when listening through headphone, the sound quality produced is much more better than many pre-installed radio. The UI is customizable and you can choose from many themes.
You can view the developer thread to know which phones are supported: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059296
For download link visit http://www.ccnworldtech.com/2014/04/spirit-fm-for-android-radio-that-works.html pls is the spirit fm still working |

chigoizie7: There is absolutely nothing good in dat decision.
Have you for once considered d reason why u chose a course of study? The institution?
*proximity:- how could u be living in lagos and u chose unilag, only for jamb to come and reassign u to university of maidugari? (Proximity, security and familiarity) simply because unimaid has a low turn out for jamb.
*money:- u saw skuls like covenant university, and co, some of the best skuls in naija, yet u went ahead to choose UNN, UNIZIK and UNIBEN, it is so, simply because, u cannot pay their fees, u might want to limit it to private uni, but hey, ANSU, IMSU ESUT and so many other govt skuls pay above N150k per session, where as some good skuls pay as low as N16k,N20,100 etc.
*quality of education, u saw skuls that could not make the 1st 200 list n naija, u didn't chose it, u went for UNN,UNIBEN,UNIZIK, UNILAG and co, because u knew the competition, u read so hard and so well so as to pass the 200 cut off, only for jamb to come and reassign u to those useless skuls simply because they had no or less candidates, isn't that gross?
* I can go on and on and on,
*why did jamb scrap the "OPTION" of 2nd choice in their registration process? because, this is were the 2nd choice of a thing would have come into play. When u didn't reach 1st choice, u revert to 2nd choice, and when u don't get it too, u will not blame anyone.
Plz always check well b4 u conclude on certain issues, ur half baked decisions can affect people negatively. my guy if person put uniben as first choice and he wan study ISD. but he nor make am and he put auchi as second choice but he score 191 and he dey go for business admin auchi fit accept dat person |

knowledge4: Nothing has changed The University still has the final say on who it admits. Even if Jamb sends all those who scored 180 to Unilag to do the Post UTME Exam, does it make a difference where they do the Post UTME exam but Unilag cut off for a course is 220? Who is fooling himself here? Is it not the candidate and his parent? Why cannot a parent take his child to a Private University if the Federal Universities cannot accommodate everyone? Did the child not attend private nursery, primary and secondary schools? Why run away from a private university? These Nigerians sef, making noise over nothing At the end of the day, the same parent will blame the FGN for falling standards of education What is wrong with Private University, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education? i nor just knw wetin i wan tel dis 8 year old boy...u lack knowledge infact ur name nor suppose to be knowledge..do u think na every parent go fit afford 500k infact dis ur post vex me if u talk dis one for road na lynch dem go lynch u...IDOIT OF THE CENTURY..infact u nd baba go slow na desame sense una get |
