In international trade,countries tend to engage in specialization while they encourage imports. Its to USA advantage to import goods from china. Same goods bought from china for 1 dollar if produced in US it may cost 10 dollars or more.

Consumer spendings is not a bad thing, its only bad when you don't pay back your credit debt. I laugh when people say USA economy is falling off yet the country still records the highest amount of GDP per capital and also migration. US is a capitalist country meaning 90 percent of companies are owned by private sector and 10 percent by government. Facebook, microsoft, google, chevron, mobile, Coca Cola,Oracle, Pepsi are all private companies. Nano technology will be the game changer and I doubt china man has the patient and resources to build research labs to invent their own product.
