“If you go about in arrogance; if you are found where elections are rigged; if you take revenge on people who turned their backs on you on your way to jail; or found where shady deals are done, then you haven’t learnt anything and will rot in hell.”

These were the words of admonition, Venerable Tayo Aduloju of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, imparted on the former chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority and ex-deputy national chairman of the PDP, south, Chief Olabode George, who was Saturday released from the Kirikiri maximum prisons, Apapa, Lagos.

George, who was received by PDP party chieftains led by former President Olusegun Oba-sanjo, Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State and Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Musiliu Obanikoro, among others, had served out a two-year jail sentence following his conviction by the Justice Olubunmi Oyewole led-High Court, Ikeja, Lagos on October 26, 2009.

He was convicted for charges ranging from contract splitting and disobedience to constituted authority.

George left the Kirikiri prisons at exactly 10.30 am Saturday in the company of his wife, Roli, mother, and daughter, Oyinkan, Lagos PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, and Oyo State deputy governor, Taofeek Arapaja, clad in white guinea brocade Agbada and a maroon and black cap to match.

George, who drove away from Kirikiri in his bullet-proof Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number BE 252 BDG, was in his elements and looked relaxed as he acknowledged cheers from the hundreds of supporters, who had converged on the prison to receive him.

The former NPA chairman then went straight to the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina Lagos, for a thanksgiving service, where he was joined by other prominent members of the party.

They included Obasanjo, Governor Daniel, Minister of Defence, Mr. Adetokunbo Kayode, Minister of Environment, John Odey, governorship candidate of the PDP in Ogun, Gen. Adetunji Olurin, Gen. The Kirikiri environ was also adorned with posters and banners with different inscriptions praising and saluting George, whose incarceration they described in some of their banners as politically motivated.

Nigerians stranded in crisis-ridden Libya may have to wait a little longer before being evacuated as Libyan authorities have refused to grant landing permit to the aircraft and personnel designated to bring them home.

President Goodluck Jonathan had on Wednesday ordered the immediate evacuation of Nigerians stranded in the troubled country.

However, sources at the National Emergency Management Agency told THISDAY last night that the team for the evacuation and the aircraft chartered for the purpose could not fly to Tripoli since Thursday as they are still awaiting diplomatic clearance from Libya.

"The Director-General of NEMA, Sani Sidi, who is the leader of the team and others have been on standby at the airport since Thursday waiting for the clearance from Libya. Others in the team are foreign affairs officers, medical personnel and immigration/rescue officers. We are still waiting for clearance," said another NEMA source.

NEMA Spokesman Yushau Shuaib confirmed the problems being faced by the Nigerian team, saying the agency would keep trying until it gets the necessary clearance to enter Libya for the evacuation exercise.

Nigerian embassy sources in Tripoli told THISDAY last night that there are about 2,000 distressed Nigerians in Libya who are eagerly awaiting evacuation.

They are said to be getting a raw deal in the hands of Libyan security men who have been brutally repressing the uprising.

The source said when the embassy was finding it difficult getting clearance for the evacuation team, at a point, it considered the idea of asking the distressed Nigerians to either move to Egypt or Mecca in Saudi Arabia, "from where the NEMA team will go and pick them."

However, the Nigerian embassy dropped the idea for fears that the Nigerians may be exposed to more dangers if they should attempt crossing Libyan land borders.

The embassy source further disclosed that the Libyan authorities have unenthusiastic about the issuance of the clearance to NEMA difficult because Libya views Nigeria as an unfriendly country.

This, the source said has been responsible for the frosty relationship between the two countries in the last ten years. As a result of this, Libya closed its embassy in Nigeria over ten years ago. However, Nigeria still maintains an embassy in Tripoli.

Meanwhile, anti-government protesters in Tripoli came under heavy gunfire yesterday, with many feared killed.

Protests in the city resumed as protesters seeking the overthrow of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi emerged from mosques following Friday prayers.

They were confronted by a force of troops and militiamen who opened fire on them in the Souq al-Jomaa area as they headed towards Green Square. Snipers on rooftops are also said to have fired on the marchers.

Reports of anti-government protesters being fired on have also come from other areas of the capital including Fashloom, Janzour and Zawlyat al-Dahmani.

"Many people are being killed right now in Tripoli, I just got a few phone calls from friends who witnessed people going out of mosques being shot at," one Tripoli resident told the BBC.

"I am very scared to leave the house. I was planning to visit my parents, but they called me and told me not to go out because there's heavy security on the main roads, stopping cars for checks. We haven't left the house for six days, apart from going out to buy bread. The city is completely closed," another resident told the BBC

The Finance Minister rightly commisioned an independent audit being led by I think Akintola WilliamsDeloitte instead of making half informed statements like Babalola and with the report due next week, Oniwon is just trying to preempt the report and gather some credibility for himself.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Wednesday got additional four years in office, courtesy of a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting governorship elections in Kogi, Sokoto, Adamawa, Cross Rivers and Bayelsa States in April because the tenure of the affected governors has not yet expired.

Reacting to the ruling, the spokesman to the INEC chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said the commission was still studying the judgment. He also said the commission’s next line of action would be informed by whatever it gets from its ongoing study process of the ruling.

Uduaghan was sworn in January 10, this year after winning a re-run election, which was conducted on January 6. This followed the annulment of his 2007 election victory by a Court of Appeal, Benin City, Edo State on November 9, last year. By the judgment, the governor’s tenure expires on Jan 10, 2015.

The state government said it was delighted by the ruling which it also said had strengthened the hand of democracy.

The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Oma Djebah, said: “The ruling has easily manifested in the wild jubilation that has engulfed the length and breadth of Delta State.  Deltans are overwhelmingly joyous that the electoral foundations of performing administration of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan have been further reaffirmed by the judiciary.”

The court also held that the tenure of the five sitting governors - Alhaji Ibrahim Idris (Kogi); Aliyu Wammakko (Sokoto);  Murtala Nyako (Adamawa);  Liyel Imoke (Cross Rivers); and Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) - would expire at various times other than May 29, this year.

By this judgment, Idris would leave office on April 5, 2012; Wamako would vacate office on May 28, 2012; Nyako leaves on April 30, 2012, Sylva’s tenure expires on May 29, 2012, while Imoke would vacate office on August 28, 2012

The Senate, on Wednesday, approved the sum of $1.53billion for economic and power reforms, rural development, special intervention for infrastructural development and social programme development for the Federal Government and 14 states.

The approval was for the Federal Government and some states to access funding facilities in Islamic Development Bank (IDB), the International Development Association (IDA), French Development Agency (FDA) and Indian Line of Credit.

The loans which are in line with Nigeria’s External Borrowing guidelines would improve the state of infrastructure of the beneficiaries.

The loans and credits would be secured on concessionary terms with repayment period of 25 to 40 years and moratorium of seven to 10 years.

The Joint Committees on Finance and National Planning, Economic Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in their recommendations frowned at a situation whereby lenders propose to beneficiary states the type of projects they should execute with the proceed of the facilities.`

It added that “ the terms and conditions of all loans are favourable to the borrowing states and will not in any way imperil Nigeria’s debt burden”

Last year, the Senate approved the second batch of the 2010 external borrowing plan in which it excluded the states but approved the Federal Government’s request to borrow $1.537 billion out of the overall $3.702 billion for which President Goodluck Jonathan had repeatedly requested of the lawmakers.

The first approval was in April 2010 when the lawmakers partially approved $915 million out of the $5.22 billion loan proposed under the 2010 borrowing plan.

But the Senate objected to the request by Ogun State following the inability to reconcile its requested loan with what was approved by the Ministry of Finance.

Kaduna State was also denied approval because they were yet to finish negotiations with the lending agencies.

The Bank of Ghana yesterday in Accra, handed over Class “A” Banking License to the Energy Bank Ghana Limited established by a Nigerian business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim, at a ceremony witnessed by the President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor John Atta Mills.

This is coming as Ibrahim pledged to invest $50million towards building a first class hospital in Ghana.
Handing over the banking license to Ibrahim, the Governor of Bank of Ghana, Mr. Kwesi  Bekoe Amissah –Arthur said the Energy Bank Limited had met the minimum share capital requirement of 60million cedis for first class banks in Ghana and passed other checks by security agencies.

He noted that the investment was a demonstration of the confidence of foreign investors in Ghanaian economy. “The name selected for this bank is interesting. It shows that the bank has decided to position itself to take advantage of the huge potential in the energy and petroleum sector. Just as the sector has great prospects; it carries with it enormous risks. But the background of the promoters gives some comfort, even though there are huge challenges that can only be overcome with dedication,” he said.

He however cautioned that the board of the Energy Bank should know that the share capital could easily fizzle out, if not properly managed and advised them to be innovative in order to remain competitive in the banking sector.

Speaking while inaugurating the bank’s office complex, President Mills said it was a demonstration of the confidence of the international business community in the economy of Ghana.

He appealed to the Energy Bank and other financial institutions in Ghana to reduce the cost of credit in order to create jobs and invest in human resources.

“We welcome wholeheartedly, the Energy Bank into the business community of our dear nation. We know that with their antecedents and with the kind of support that they have, they should not find it difficult to operate in the Ghanaian business community,” he said.

In his speech, the Chairman of Energy Bank, Barrister Ibrahim said Ghana’s banking sector was one key institution in that country’s success story.

“It is amazing to see 28 Ghanaian banks having over $1billion shareholders fund spreading across all aspects of banking in a 25million population of Ghana; compared with 23 Nigerian banks with shareholders fund of about $1.9billion for 150 million population. There is no doubt that Ghana presents a future economic stability guarded with robust human resources of the Bank of Ghana,” he said.

“Mr. President, I am encouraged by the development in Ghana and as someone, who prize intellectual capacity in high esteem over moral intelligence, I cannot but appreciate a growth that is propelled or instigated by brainstorming exercise rather than any other incapable one that is influenced by local circumstances and ethnic zeal or overzealous retaliatory attack that have no fundamental bearing on your sustained economic growth,” he added.

He commended President Mills for being prudent and not overheating the system in the face of global recession.
“As a mark of our love for the government and the people of Ghana, our Group will further invest $50million, in the first instance, towards building a first-class hospital, provided the government will provide land where such hospital will be built,” he said.

A semblance of hell broke loose Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital as members of rival political parties violently attacked each other, destroying campaign bill boards and inflicted heavy bodily harm on rival party members on a day President Goodluck Jonathan stormed the capital for his presidential campaign.

Narrating the ordeal of members of the ACPN in the hands of the attacking members of the ruling party, PDP, in Ilorin Tuesday, the Organising Secretary of ACPN in Kwara State, Suleimon Jabata said the fate of the attacked members of the party who are on danger list still hang in the balance with the arm of one them chopped off, adding that the other members who sustained injuries are still being checked for the degree of their injuries to be ascertained.

Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) in the state condemned the pulling down of the bill boards of the governorship candidate of the party for April general election, Hon. Gbenga Olawepo by people believed to be suspected thugs in the state.

In a statement issued in Ilorin and signed by the state chairman of the party, Alhaji Abidoun Usman, the party said such attitude portends a serious danger to the enthronement of democracy in the country.

According to him, “ It is disheartening that inspite of President Goodluck Jonathan’s commitment to healthy democracy in Nigeria, some people have continued to constitute a cog in the wheel of progress of the nation by embarking on action that may likely cause political unrest in the country.”
Usman stated that, the people irrespective of their political parties should be able to pursue their political campaigns without recourse to the damaging of ones posters or pulling down the bill boards of the opponents as this would go a long way to usher-in good governance and allow credible leaders to emerge without rancour.

He said “ Thugs numbering about 15 drove into our party secretariat at 25, Irepodun street, Adewole Estate, Ilorin at about 8.00 a.m in a blue Lite-Ace bus and chased away the security guards after which they destroyed and carted away our bill boards especially that of our governorship candidate for this April elections in the state”

Usman added ” not satisfied with this, they moved round the Ilorin metropolis and pulled down all the bill boards belonging to DPP and this is uncalled for in view of the recent security meeting held with the state police command on how to ensure peaceful conduct of campaigns in the state for this elections”.

He stressed that, this latest action has been brought to the notice of the affected security agencies in the state in order to curtail the activities of the suspected thugs before it turns into another thing in the state.

While appealing to the members of the party in the state to remain calm , Usman said that, the appropriate authorities concern have been informed about the action .

He therefore called on the state police command and other affected security agencies in the state to address the issue without further delay in order to ensure the peaceful conduct of the forthcoming general elections in the state.

Reacting, the state government through the chief press secretary to the governor said “The alleged attack by some political parties and pulling down of their bill boards was an outright falsehood. The state today hosted Mr President on his campaign rally and to our dismay, many of the party supporters wearing aso ebi were attacked while buses carrying the party supporters who have PDP posters on their vehicles were also attacked. Those alleging these were the same people attacking our innocent supporters when returning from the rally.

“The bill board of three of our aspirants including the candidate, Abdulfatah Ahmad, Rasaki Anumwa and Issa Bio Ibrahim were not only torn off, but pulled down at Adeta round about and Wahab Folawiyo road, Pakata area among others. Equally, we have appealed to security operatives in the state to bring to book the perpertrator of this dastardly act.

As a goverment we have laboured so much to bring development to our state in the last eight years, we would not tolerate any disgruntuled elements to take the state back to the dark era which we have wished away all in the name of playing politics,” he concluded.
