PoliticsRe: I Hereby Renounce My Nigerian Citizenship by Reese1: 6:14pm On Jan 14, 2009
@ felifeli,

Are you sure your American friends weren't talking about the weather?  cheesy You know like "oh man, I'd live in Nigeria forever with this kind of weather" lol, and not "I will buy any Nigerian citizenship, I renounce my American citizenship so I can stay in this here Nigeria and never go back to that America again!, Nigeria is just too loving and wonderful!"   grin

Again, Keep in mind, a lot of foreigners living in Nigeria say they love the country, etc because their living situation is still quite decent compared to the life of the average Nigerian. But I don't believe for one second that these people will desert their country to "give it all" to Nigeria, at least not with the way Nigeria is now.

Just my thought,
PoliticsRe: 6 Million Nigerian Children Out Of School – Unesco by Reese1: 5:22pm On Jan 14, 2009
I think whoever wrote that article was trying to be mischevious.  angry

Okay, so a bunch of school age kids are using laptops to browse porn. Yes, we can argue that it's inappropriate content for them as children. But kids are kids are kids all over the world. If you give laptops to kids in US, UK, Singapore, Kenya, China, wherever, I guarantee you the kids will try to see what they can get away with doing on those laptops, and porn could very well be one of those things they'll try to sneak in.

In no way is the lack of provision of critical educational tools for the children justified just because ooooohhhh, they might watch porn!!

I feel like that article was trying to insinuate that somehow the kids in Nigeria should be put in a certain light because they were browsing porn, simply because the laptops are donatedhuh

If it's wrong for poor Nigerian kids  to use donated laptops to watch porn, it's also wrong for a billionaire's kid in Dubai who got the laptop as a gift to watch porn.

The only part that made sense in that article is the quoted below:

A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.
Seems like some genius should have thought about that, before, eh?  undecided

I am neither Bush's biggest fan nor am I some political guru but I am inclined to say you are making quite a dangerous comparison here.
PoliticsRe: Men Of God And Their Friends by Reese1: 4:46pm On Jan 12, 2009
While i do not subscribe to any VIP area in churches, i still feel that to some extent, putting a governor or elected official in the midst of the 'masses' may cause some problems. Knowing our society, people will begin to ask that person for jobs, contracts, handouts, loans etc. In extreme situations, people of opposing parties may even send area boys and/or miscreants to harrass that person and probably inflict some bodily injury - IN EXTREME SITUATIONS O! Over here in more sane climates, Gordon Brown or Tony Blair may seat in the midst of millions and all these millions will do is probably greet him with the nod of the head or a wave or maybe a 'hello'. I think sometimes, we have to understand the security implications that surround our leaders - it may be also that because they have not carried out their duties properly, they are afraid also of what may happen to them should they be caught without their ADCs and security personnel.
I see your point here.
PoliticsRe: Men Of God And Their Friends by Reese1: 4:10pm On Jan 12, 2009
Even Jesus said give unto Ceaser what is Ceaser's. I can't imagine King David sat in the same pew as the rest of the Jews in the synagogue as much as he was one of the people. If he deserves to be honoured, then he should be he just didn't deserve it.
Not to turn this into a religion thread or anything but what about Jesus himself that dined, sat with, and associated with those who society considered the "pee-ons", the dregs, the slums?

My point is, there is no reason a house of God should have a VIP area, I don't care who it is.  Tinubu should be able to sit with the rest of the people and worship, after all he is supposed to be a man of the people, no? I bet if Jesus himself walked into your church, he will not ask to be seated in the VIP area. lol If he gets seated there, He'll probably ask to be moved lol

Here in our church, we have elected officials come and worship from time to time (albeit they show up more when it's close to election time  tongue), but there ain't no "spot" for them. Just sit down somewhere! Not until the pastor tells us oh, we have such and such worshipping with us today, blah blah blah and the person gets up wherever he's sitting and we acknowledge them and what not.

The first time I walk into a church, and I see a vip area, i'm leaving never to return.

Ok,sorry for the long post. smiley
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Needs N2.7tr For Effective Policing, Says Okiro by Reese1: 7:49am On Jan 10, 2009
Did this dude say 2.7 TRILLION shocked

I'm sorry but why is this Okiro guy still the inspector general? undecided What improvement has the Nigerian Police Force experienced under his watch? angry

He's always in the news asking for one money or the other, or else the security of Nigerians is not guaranteed! Dude, look around you!!

How much of that money is going towards adequately compensating these police officers so they can increase the quality of their lives and maybe, just maybe that might help put a decline in the number of officers taking out their frustrations on the common man angry

He's trying to buy dogs and horses angry How about putting that money to good use and invest in an elite police academy that will produce EDUCATED, DISCIPLINED, DEDICATED, WELL COMPENSATED officers.

How about equipping them with the adequate training to police effectively?

How about making sure they can spell "boy" and can speak in complete sentences before putting them on the job? Oh, and actually graduated from an educational institution, and not bribing their way through either!

How about setting these officers up to be a respected entity in society?

But no, he wants 2.7 trillion to buy dog and horse, and helicopter.

Before he spends one naira on any kind of gadget, he needs to invest in the HUMAN RESOURCES first. Get the right people first, the toys will follow. angry

PoliticsRe: Akwa Ibom Carol Night That Broke The Guiness World Book Of Record by Reese1: 5:45pm On Dec 28, 2008
A statement signed by the Special Assistant on  Media to the governor, Pastor Anietie Ukpe said the event tagged “AKSG Carol Night 2008”, which is packaged as a tourism act, would be declared open by the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.
Tourism act for who? Who's coming to visit? What do you have to offer your "tourists"?!

The statement reads in part: “the event  would seek to best the former record set at Bob Jones University in the United States, when 7,514 carol singers assembled to sing carols and left a record which had received hallowed mention in the Guinness Book of World Records for years
See idiots, America got road, light, food, housing, water, everything you don't have. And all you can think of is to compete with them on Christmas caroling.

"Several governors, ministers, National Assembly members, members of the diplomatic corps, etc are expected to grace the event.”
You impoverish your people on a daily basis, yet these fools have the nerve to "grace" an event and show their face in public. Should the 9,000 + hungry souls feel honored? But then again, they probably felt honored that their leaders came to watch them sing.  undecided

Accordingly, the governor’s pointsman said the 9,300-man choir would be drawn from the state, adding that each of ten villages would contribute 30 choristers and this would add up to 310 choristers per local government.
It's a shame all 9,300 of those people didn't turn on those "dignitaries" and beat the daylight out of them until they cough up all the money they've collectively stolen.
PoliticsRe: Fake Products All Over Nigeria by Reese1: 8:41pm On Dec 27, 2008
Very thoughtful and I'm quite impressed but do we really have credible  elections in Nigeria?
We still gotta try though. In this case, he still has to make an informed decision on who he believes will best represent his interests in office. If we don't vote because we know they're rigged, it's a lost cause before it even starts.  sad

@ Poster,

I suggest you let your representatives that are in power to serve and represent you know that you can't take this anymore.

The contact information below is for the Consumer Protection Council in Nigeria.

Website: http://www.cpcnigeria.org/index.aspx

Their job, as stated on their own website is :

[b]WHAT IS THE MISSION OF THE CPC?

The CPC would have succeeded in its work when Nigerian consumers can be described as well protected, getting their money’s worth, knowledgeable about the market place and its mechanisms, vigilant about what takes place in it, assertive about their rights and conscious of their responsibilities.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE CPC?

    * Providing speedy redress to consumers complaints through negotiation, mediation and conciliation;

    * Seeking ways and means of removing from the markets hazardous products and causing offenders to replace such products with safer and more appropriate alternatives;

    * Publishing from time to time list of products whose consumption and sale have been banned, withdrawn, severally restricted or not approved by the Federal Government;

    * Causing an offending company, firm, trade association or individual to protect, compensate, provide relief and safeguards to injured consumers or communities from adverse effects of technologies that are inherently harmful, injurious, violent or highly hazardous;

    * Organising and undertaking campaigns and other forms of activities that will lead to increased public consumer awareness;

    * Encouraging trade, industry and professional associations to develop and enforce in their various fields, quality standards designed to safeguard the interest of consumers;

    * Issuing guidelines to manufacturers, importers, dealers and wholesalers in relation to their obligation under the CPC enabling law;

    * Encouraging the formation of voluntary consumer groups or associations for consumers’ well being;

    * Ensuring that consumers’ interest receive due consideration at appropriate fora and providing redress to obnoxious practices or the unscrupulous exploitation of consumers by companies, firms, trade associations or individuals;

    * Registering and monitoring products, services and sales promotions in the market place.

PoliticsRe: Is It True That Nigerian's Are Really Cowards ? by Reese1: 7:11pm On Dec 27, 2008
Okay, a perfectly good example is that thread about the lawmakers already allocating N15 Billion for foreign trips and refreshments in 2009. That news alone is enough to make someone take to the streets!  shocked

But guess what the majority of the reaction you'll get will be? "Well, God dey, sha." "They've started again". "These politicians are wicked o!"

It's like somebody rapes you continuously, you're bleeding, you're dying, and here he comes with a knife-pointed foreign object to continue where he left off, he says "bend over' yet again, what do you do? You spread those cheeks and bend right over!, YET AGAIN!

Only in this case, a hundred something million people have their butt cheeks spread wide open! Bleeding and all!

I apologize for the graphic description, but it was the best way I could make my point.
PoliticsRe: Is It True That Nigerian's Are Really Cowards ? by Reese1: 6:59pm On Dec 27, 2008
why the average nigerian would not put their necks out is because they have been betrayed by the politicians too many times
Well, if enough of Nigerians make their voices heard loud enough, I believe the politicians that keep betraying them won't keep coming back, no?

look at people like festus keyamo even adams oshiomole with all his mouth, nigerians listen to them but once they make a name for themselves they start to get close to the rich n corrupt business people and politicians,look at the almighty dora akunyili that everyone thought was above board selling her integrity for a mess of porridge imagine all the people that have stood with akunyili even nafdac staffs who have braved danger and death to refuse bribes you think they will believe it if another person comes along shouting anti corruption and sacrifice?ebenezer babatope ,onagoruwa e.t.c ni
But should they be looking to "that great one" to emerge? Why doesn't an individual Nigerian feel like he can exercise his or her voice as well?

all these has reduced the average nigerian mindset to cynicism and siddon look attitude
For how long?

its very well for you to call people to the national stadium for a protest,but look at it from these people's point of view,what is stopping you from abandoning them if tinubu or yar adua's man  bribes you with some millions?
But by the same token, there's nothing stopping one of those people, to organize the protests, start the petitions, etc, afterall, THEY won't succumb to corruption or be seduced by the millions. So it's either they don't care enough, or they know they're corrupt themselves, hence siddon look while I wait for my turn.  shocked

people have resigned themselves to the way things are and don't want to die for a cause when the leadership of the cause will turn round to collect millions.
Again, should they be looking for a "great knight"? I'm thinking maybe enough people don't know the power that they can have in deciding who gets to represent and serve them,

Remember, these dictators, leaders are as brutal, and unrelenting as they are because they believe without a shadow of a doubt, that Nigerians are FOOLS and are scared out of their minds. And they will continue to demoralize and oppress them until someone with some courage or some people start making some very loud noise and prove them otherwise.
PoliticsRe: Is It True That Nigerian's Are Really Cowards ? by Reese1: 4:56pm On Dec 27, 2008
If I suggest we hold a peaceful rally at race course to create awareness of how much we are frustrated as Nigerian's with our leaders, I know I will be on my own.

If you guys no be coward, signify your interest to meet up at a venue and we will arrange to mobilise about 5million Nigerians to go to race course or a venue we agree for a peaceful, non-violent non-confrontational rally.

Dang homie, I think it's safe to say that Wallace was thoroughly SONNED by Farrakhan. shocked Wallace should start calling him father lol

The thing is no nation is immune from corruption but from what I see, in the case of the U.S., the elected officials chop some, work some, chop some, work some, so at least the people can still feel that their money is being used for the people's benefit.

But in Naija? shocked, omo na chop ALL O, wetin be work? Screw the people! Who cares if they can BLATANTLY see that I'm not using the money for the good of the masses? I finally got to this post and I'm gonna sit here and chop and chop till I die, and I'll make sure my unknown generations to come after me can chop and chop till they die as well. And I dare any common man to try to speak up cuz I'll degrade, demean, belittle, and oppress you to the point that you'll give up on life itself and have no choice but to retreat to your pathetic existence, suffering and smiling, of course, and maybe hope and pray that God will deliver you someday undecided

So yeah, that's the difference. sad

TravelRe: 6 Months United States Visa ! by Reese1: 3:10pm On Oct 03, 2008
Hey Mryellow, in response to your question, don't quote me on this cuz I'm not 100% sure but I believe them marrying in the U.S. won't do them much of any good. They'll still have to leave cuz 6 months is 6 months. The only way they can stay is if they got a fiancee visa and your friend is already a U.S. citizen and then her fiancee can stay. But if what they got was a regular 6 month stay visa, they have to leave after 6 months, regardless of what they do.

Now, if she has a baby there, unfortunately that doesn't do her much good until the baby turns 18 and can file for both of them to become residents then citizens, so unfortunately, in this case too they'll have to leave but the baby is still considered a U.S. citizen though; and he or she can file for the parents when he's 18.

But check this info though to make sure it's accurate but that's how I think it works. For more info check the US immigration website at www.uscis.gov

The way your name is on your ticket has to match how it is on your passport exactly or you might run into problems. So, I would force him to change it.

You paid for the ticket, so you should get exactly what you requested, and as a professional, he should honor that.

PoliticsRe: 'Return Home', Fashola Charges Nigerians In Diaspora by Reese1: 5:11am On Sep 05, 2008
Its high time Nigerians in abroad create alternative goverment, because the nigeria goverment has failed us, The sole aim is to accelerate the developmental goals of the nation and make Yaradua's vision of leaping from a developing nation to industialised nation by 2020.
Objectives of the alternative govt

1. To hold a National congress of all nigerians in diaspora
2. The aim is to choose a National president of Nigeria in diaspora.
3.The aim is not to wrestle power with demoratically elected govt but act as an alternative govt in providing jobs for our young people, building busineses, buying land in large swathes of nigerian cities with the sole aim creating new alternative cities for our members, cities where everything works from electricity to water.
4.The president will be chosen through an on-line voting system armed with a budget of $1 billion dollars a year.
5. Top world accounting firms will be chosen to forensically audit the account yearly.
6. The president will have a vice - president and probably 10 commisoners.
7. The president will be on a salary of $50,000.00 and each comminsioners will be given $35,000.00 each, the vice president will be on $40,000.00
8. The terms will be 4 a four year term.
9. On appointment hte president and his commisioners shall relocate to Nigeria untill the end of their term.

How do we fund this grand scheme - The scheme would be funded by every Nigeria in diaspora from the ones in Ghana to the ones Austalia, if each Nigeria in diaspora contributes £100.00 a year this development goal can be acheived.

Who is eligible to be the president and commisioners, every nigeria in diaspora who contributes to the fund it does not matter if your a cleaner in diaspora or a professor. But it will be of great benefit if you attain some reasonable level of education.

So Nigerians in diaspora - I want you all to ponder over this proposal I am sure some of you out there could modify these vision and make it a reality. UP Nigeria, One Nigeria !!
I think it would be ideal if each state had a representative, like the role of the "governor" so not one commissioner is tasked with too much burden? But then again, the budget would decide if that's feasible.

But getting people to get behind this idea though is the thing. How does one get people to really think through this and trust it? Get the word out, so to speak, to all nigerians globally?
