Denial or acceptance, on profit or on turnover, VAT or CIT...whatever. If we as citizens cannot participate in how we are governed and believe that our responsibility ends when we vote and cheer when the person is sworn in and then go to sleep without actively directing the affairs of leadership, moderating their ways and setting g their agenda, then we will be on serious trouble. If we cannot hold government accountable, ask them to open their books to public scrutiny AND DIRECT THEM ON HOW AND WHAT TO SPEND OUR MONEY ON, this scenario will only get worse. I repeat again. Our government has a SPENDING PROBLEM, a bad, very bad spending habit that has not been able to show commensurate value for the enormous amount of resources they appropriate. It is you and I that ultimately pay for this. Dangote is not manufacturing cement for his personal use. It is you and I that use it to build houses, businesses and industries. Even government that uses his products to build our roads will still ultimately ask us to pay more for the roads and bridges so it is a vicious cycle. |
You just wished these people took the issues of governance as seriously as their politics. This is very unfortunate the time and effort they expend on the elections that are still months away. |
nairalanda1:I agree. There is no comparison whatsoever between a military rule, that military rule and a civilian, democratic regime. What people have against this particular regime is it's autocratic tendencies which are alien to the practice of democracy. It is incumbent on successive civilian regimes to deepen and broaden the practice of democracy that 'they' fought so hard for, so that the possibility of a release remains remote. The fact that there was a planned coup for the first time since 1999 shows all is not exactly well. |
Ù EponObi:But I have seen this picture for years. Before this forum and long before AI. I think this was a period either just before Babangida stepped down or shortly after Abacha took over from Shonekan and some sort of negotiations were ongoing, to which Abiola refused to renounce his mandate and was promptly detained. |
Tomson1:And why only for the heads. Is this not injustice and will this not cause internal feudal fights within those institutions particularly when appointment to leadership is politicized. Hopefully another government will come to reverse all these absurd policies. This government should do the business of economic recovery so that all citizens are economically secure and prosperous and so that all these divisions become unnecessary. The black man and feudalism....what a pity. |
This is the simple reason WHY every citizens has the responsibility to question government. Everyone is affected. Everyone is paying interest on the debt by a steady decline in standards of living through less and less government services and more and more and more contributions. So it has reached a point where every citizen must begin to question these debts, questions why and on what government borrows. By debating the projects and programs government borrows for. Debating their viability, necessity and priority. Debating alternative ways and means to get things done. Debating value for money and accountability. Debating capital flight through contracting, etc. In a nutshell. When a wealthy entity sees it's worth decline it begins to participate in the way and manner its money, its resources are spent. He begins to look closer at invoices and begins to question expenses whether he is a family man, a corporate entity or a country. |
ejieddy:The flat comparison is understandable. Yes things are more expensive there as in most parts of the world. But when you introduce the 'better off' narrative by Mr. Tinubu you also qualify it by introducing the 'earnings' aspect which is the basket called standard of living. So the question then becomes: What is the wage structure of that country for those in employment or how long does it take to earn a specific amount, for those who work informally. Then the argument becomes balanced. Thus the simple reason things are cheaper in this country is that they have to, because the purchasing power is low. It is the only thing that has made a very bad inflationary regime not much, much worse. And not because the government is doing anything to make goods and services relatively cheaper than in other climes. |
13 million and yet none can direct you on a proper course to move this country forward. How can you call it a democracy when your members have no influence over how they are governed. They just sit there doing 'yes sir'. Everyday you hear them on radio complaining about one thing or the other about government like the rest of the citizens but have zero influence on those they vow to support. What is the value of politics without influence, membership without participation. Just fodder for winning elections. |
sterlingD:I think they are maxed out as far as this squad is concerned. They cannot play better than what they did last night and in the first leg. The defence, midfield are either aging or just not the same quality as before and then you have a rookie coach who cannot get it together properly. I expect a complete rebuild in the summer and obviously a Madrid standard UCL capable manager in the dugout, which is not a small task. |
Seunfretty:He is one player that has to go for Madrid to move forward. He is tottering between an asset and a liability as far as I am concerned. Didn't show up at all last night. Almost reintroduced his usual Laliga drama. |
And now they were four. One each from England, Spain, Germany and France. Once again the Italians ate are left out of the party just as their national soccer team will not be attending the world cup. |
UEFA should check if Neuer has an account in Curacao where betting syndicates have made a recent deposit. This is ridiculous. |
Hope the family (if any is still left) remembers that in 1991 a dollar was N9.90 and a goat cost N300 naira. So they have to adjust his bill for inflation and devaluation of the naira. |
To who. Any of the family still left. |
brutustech:When I say we are entrapped in a feudal mindset this is another example. What in the world is wrong with you serving your term and LETTING GO. GO, GO, GO, JUST GO. GO HOME, Leave and never look back. Kai. What is about the negro and his inability to accord people liberty. Let the people be. The human soul eternally desires liberty. Give it to him. This is a quarter of a century of unbroken democracy, are Nigerians not mature enough to leave home and set up their own future. Must daddy continue to choose the clothes they wear, the food they eat, the music they listen to. Let the people choose the leaders they want. Are they dull or imbecilic. Don't they know good from bad, right from wrong? |
Laying a pipeline through countries that are poorer than you... good luck to that. Nothing more to add. You know me and gas are not friends. Look at the economic devastation through skyhigh energy costs here in Nigeria. Just hope by the time, perhaps in decades when the pipeline will have reached Morocco Europe will not have gone totally green and cut their gas demands. I think there are far better ways to spend and better things to spend our money on. |
He made a joke of it but....this is a low blow. See where the so called democracy has landed us. Uncompromising decline since 1999. Hapless people, shameless leaders. Now the butt of jokes all over the world and to our faces in our home. |
There was no plan whatsoever, no deep thought to what happened after the reforms. No planned pathway out of the resulting inflation. It was just. Let us gather all the money and let them fend for themselves. So much for cerebral leadership. Well the people are fending for themselves by turning on one another in the rampaging levels of crime and criminality. When you cannot feed your pets they will destroy your house even if it just to get out fend for themselves. |
The fact remains. You can gather, collect, borrow every penny in the world. As long as you have no idea of how to build a stable, prosperous, equitable and sustainable society, nothing will change. This is three years, three years after the reforms started. Three years after Nigeria decided to put trillions of naira in your hands courtesy of fuel subsidy removals with the expectation that you invest it on their behalf and at the very least a small return. Where are the investments, where are the returns. Now you want even more. |
These are the questions we should be asking ourselves as citizens if we are interested in the way we are governed. It is not about political parties and candidates, contesting and winning elections. But the every day effects of our decisions pertaining to what we are doing to ourselves and what we are failing to do to/for others. Some on this forum will laugh about a complaint about the cost of a twenty plus year old car while others do not even know where the next meal will come. All are feeling the effects of a badly run down economy experiencing hyperinflation over an extended period of time, 3 years and counting. Let us talk more about these issues, citizen to citizen to find and fashion our own ways out and leave politics and politicians in the dustbin for once. |
Tareq1105:Now you are the one that brought Mr. Tinubu into this matter when you know it should not be about him but the system that has to be set right. No where else on earth will pensions be paid just because a new leadership is elected. It is an institutional thing. Whether the institution is working or not so that when the politician leaves office it can continue. This is the problem n this part of the world. Nothing works except the king says so. Why is it like this. Insecurity. The Presidency has to give marching orders. Salaries and wages. The Presidency has to approve. Repairs of failed highways. It has to be discussed in the Presidential villa. Payment of electricity bills primarily owed by government institutions, the President has to approve...haba. Rewards for sportsmen who excel in competition. It is only when the President signs the cheque sometimes decades later. Arrest of politically exposed found wanting in crimes. Seek the President's approval first. Okay, let the policemen then march to the villa to ask why the President didn't include them in his pensions achievements since the police cannot give them an answer. I just don't understand the personalised system of government we practice in this country. |
Endinjustice:No sir. Most likely their juniors in service. This is the lot of a feudal system where loyalty is not to the country, its institutions and its laws but to the office and office holder. The boot will always appear on the other foot. |
She doesn't look Ugandan. She looks Plateau/ Nassarawa-ish. Didn't play the vid to hear the accent but you know what. With hundreds of languages, dialects and intonations round this country almost any African can camo in this country. Not bad for the crucible of Africa. But it has also exposed that raw underside to fiery fiendish felons from the Futa Jallon raining fury on our landscape. |
WhizdomXX:This is feudalism in action. It is the people he should be consulting with. Service is to the people not to a clique. And that is why there is a glass ceiling above this country. Stuck in a place where it cannot grow beyond. Because the people are not active participants in building it, just a few and the shape the state and national takes cannot rise beyond the thoughts of a few. |
RealityKings1:I cannot understand that man. If Jesus were to be alive and in the flesh will he be advocating the destruction of nations, of people or interceding for peace. Did he not live in the times of Roman occupation, of wars and conflicting....and desecration of all the Jews stood for, yet... Where are the words, 'Love thy neighbour...' 'Pray for those who persecute you...' Why will you seek the destruction of a single life you cannot create. |
Jakumo:That is not the solution. You don't bombard a location you are unsure where your troops are except there is direct communication and targeting coordinates. What the army needs is a squadron of helicopter troop carriers and supporting helicopter gunships that can cover that ground rapidly and put a squad of spec.ops on the ground in minutes of an SOS. The first gunship on the scene will soften the ground, the troop carrier comes in to deploy the rescue force and the second gunship stays high beyond range to observe enemy movement or pinpoint the direction of enemy fire. If we can get two sets per states under siege the military can do real damage and save lives. To patrol those badlands on foot is just another Vietnam. An unwinnable war. As long as Nigeria REFUSES to establish state and local government police to OCCUPY these spaces and work intelligence this war cannot be won by conventional military operations. |
If you run a family, a company or a country as a leader or owner or as a head in any capacity you must make those you lead understand the cycles of sacrifice in investment and hope in expectation for a reward. Both you and them will be part of this process from beginning to end. Everyone sacrifices and everyone gets the reward at the end. You don't tell your children or company workers or citizens of state they should make the sacrifices of investment and then you as leadership excludes yourself and live even more extravagantly, bereft of any responsibility to the vision and expect understanding. That is not leadership but rulership. |
Hey, it is not subsidy removal, which is the same thing as tax income or every othe income that matters. It is what is done with the resources that makes the difference. Spending is the difference between poverty and wealth. It is spending that creates the cycle of poverty or wealth. Every toddler in business knows that. Just like for the individual. Your earnings are secondary to your expenditure. If you earn the world and cannot manage your resources but squander it recklessly, you will eventually become poor. I supprted the removal of subsidies since the first day I came to this forum long before the APC was formed. This party, this leadership and this President resisted it in favour of fighting the cartel. I said then that the structure of Nigeria could not achieve that (it still can't). But what leadership can do is to invest the earnings from the removal towards developing the country. So the question is: How has this government invested the massive resources earned or saved from not subsidizing gasoline....that is determining how poor or rich we are today, tomorrow and in months an years to come. |
This is terrible. What is wrong with you. Kai, this is disgusting. |
robosky02:You forgot: Nigeria v mediocrity. Venue: Glass House of Failure, Package Zzzzzzz... |
When they fail the NFF will wake up and look for the resources to investigate and indict their opponents. Lousy house of football and the muppets running it. That is how they never had the sense to organise a proper world cup qualifying program and the sense to organise the playoffs. |
Come oh, what is all these garri, fufu, rice and stew. I see all these everyday and I am sick of the sight. |
