Another Kogi civil servant commits suicide

47 year-old Abdullahi Uye Zhiya from Oguma in Bassa Local Government of Kogi State has killed himself by intentionally drinking a dose of substance suspected to be poisonous chemical.

His frustration may not be unconnected to the non-payment of his salaries of about twelve months.


Close family sources told DAILY POST that for over one year, life had not been favourable as everything turned for the worst for him.

Another family source confirmed that he was a hardworking man, and that ” because he had been without salary for several months, his situation became unbearable.”

It was gathered that many relations have been reaching out to him in terms of help, but it was not sufficient as he decided to end it in death.

Another version of his story from some of his relatives indicated that the deceased may not have taken his life because of his economic challenges, but that there seemed to be other challenges which he refused to disclose.


According to the source, “We suspect that what happened has a spiritual undertone. The deceased at some point became withdrawn, but even when we asked he was never forthcoming.”

The deceased as the chief store officer at the State Universal Basic Education office in Oguma was described by his colleagues as an easy going man who avoided trouble.

Cocoa farmers in Nigerian have petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged distribution of fake farm inputs by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
The farmers alleged that the products that were distributed to cocoa farmers in the cocoa growing parts of the country adversely affected the growth and development of the crop when it was applied.
The letter dated November 27 and addressed to the president, was signed by members of the executive of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria, CFAN, including the National President, Raimi Adeniji; Secretary, Adeola Adegoke; National Vice President, South West, Ayodele Joseph; Financial Secretary, Ufono Sunday; and Public Relations Officer, Yerima Mustapha.
A copy of the letter which was obtained by PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, noted that the farmers were not consulted on the quality and necessary inputs required to meet their needs before the chemicals were procured.
“We want to draw the attention of Mr. President, Muhammad Buhari to the ugly economic sabotage perpetuated within the Ministry of Agriculture whereby fake and unwanted inputs were procured for cocoa farmers,” the letter read.
“In fact, the procured inputs, particularly fungicides, had destroyed our cocoa trees and farms.
“Sir, we have appealed to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture that farmers should be consulted whenever critical issues relating to the procurement of inputs in order to know our demands for the year.
“We want Mr. President to realise that most of the inputs procured in the past like jute bags, solo sprayer pumps, fungicide and insecticides were rejected by the cocoa farmers as a result of its low standard while those farmers that used part of it regretted their action because of the negative impact on their cocoa farms.
“Mr. President sir, it is sad to note that cocoa economy that use to feed the nation during the time of the western region has been relegated to the background due to the unpatriotic actions of those people saddled with the responsibility of promoting cocoa production at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture which is affecting the growth of the sector seriously.
CFAN further said it had written a letter to the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, to raise the same issues while the President was on medical vacation in the UK and the letter was promptly referred to the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, but no action was taken.
The group claimed it had also written several letters to Mr. Ogbeh, but did not get any response.
“On this above experience and explanations, we will therefore appeal to Mr. President to use his power to stop the ongoing procurement exercise on cocoa at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture with immediate effect until consultations are made with us as representatives of the peasant cocoa farmers in Nigeria,” the association demanded.
It said if the procurement of the inputs was not halted, the farmers would be forced to embark on an open demonstration in protest against the action by the Ministry of Agriculture at the various cocoa producing states of the country.

We strongly appeal to Mr. President to move into the matter urgently to save cocoa farmers from untimely deaths due to the havoc caused by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture,” it added.
The group, however, lauded the president for his commitment to the development of agriculture in the Nigeria, especially, cocoa, which was one of his campaign promises. It urged him to save the economy and the future of Nigeria.
Responding to PREMIUM TIMES’ enquiries on the matter, the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, regretted the development, saying the ministry would immediately do a review of the situation and discuss with the stakeholders.
Mr. Ogbeh, who responded via a text message, stated that the ministry could not have deliberately supplied fake inputs to farmers.
”I am shocked to learn of this unfortunate development,” he said.
“The ministry will immediately meet with those affected, take samples of the fungicides and investigate the source of supply, find the supplier and compel him or her to account for the damage.
“The ministry would not deliberately issue chemicals to destroy farmers’ crops. To what purpose would we do that?
“We appeal to the farmers to exercise patience and let us conclude investigations before taking appropriate measures to rectify any damage caused.”

Federal lawmakers from Benue State, have accused the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government of placing premium on Fulani cattle more than the lives of the citizens in Benue.

This was even as the lawmakers also accused the President of having no political will to end the reoccurring attacks on locals in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

Addressing Journalists at the weekend in Abuja, the lawmakers expressed disappointment over the inability of the government to effect arrest or prosecute any of the marauders, who have claimed over 5000 lives in Benue State in the last two years.

They said despite the threats coming from the Miyetti Allah Groups and others since the anti open grazing law was enacted in Benue November , the federal government has decided to pay deaf ears to them.

“We condemn in unequivocal terms provocative and inflammatory statements credited to the National President, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello Bodejo and the National Secretary, Saleh Alhassan of the group against the implementation of the anti-open grazing law in Benue State”, the lawmakers said.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Hon. Dyegh said the “carnage” and “massive destruction wreaked in the people of the state has almost grounded economic activities “as people have abandoned their farms and businesses due to the ravaging activities of AK-47 bearing herdsmen, who constantly invaded our communities, destroyed farms, property, maim and kill indiscriminately.”

He said “the people are still living with the sordid memories of the massacre in virtually every nook and cranny of the state, particularly in Buruku, Guma, Tarka, Logo, Agatu, Gwer West and Gwer East etc. Thousands of lives and property worth billions of naira have been lost to these inhuman actions of these so called Fulani herdsmen.

“Worried by the continued desecration of our land and a clear agenda to exterminate our people, the Benue State House of Assembly this year passed the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Bill, which was signed into law by the Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Samuel Ortom on May 22, 2017.”

While urging President Muhammadu Buhari to support the Open Grazing Prohibition Law, the lawmakers condemned what they called “the campaign of calumny” against Governor Samuel Ortom.

“We use this medium to draw the attention of the federal government and make a passionate appeal to the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari to grant full support to the Government of the State by giving a standing order to all security agencies to ensure maximum implementation of this wonderful piece of legislation.

“We hereby use this medium to draw the attention of the federal Government to the threats from Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and the unlawful activities of herdsmen who are violating the law and still openly grazing their cattle in Agatu and Apa Local Government Areas of the State.

“We decry the campaign of calumny against Governor Samuel Ortom by this group and want to declare our unflinching support for the Governor in the implementation of this Law. No individual is above the law and the Miyettu Allah cannot be an exception,” they added.

The lawmakers said the law was not targeted at any group of people, but it permits grazing of livestock only within ranches and prohibits the movement of animals from one destination to another in the state except by rail, trucks and other vehicles.

The lawmakers, who jointly signed the statement handed to the media include, Emmanuel Orker-Jev, John Dyegh, Saleh Hassan, Adamu Ochepo Entonu, Dickson Tarkighir, Mark Terseer Gbillah.

Others include, Emmanuel Udende, Dorathy Mato, Benjamin Wayo, Samuel Okwu and Ezekiel Adaji.

They all vowed to resort to the option of self defense, if the federal government does not rise in protection of lives and property.

They submitted that, enacting the law in Benue was not enough, until the federal government breaks silence to give support to it.

The Kaduna state government later confessed to having participated with the military under command of General Tukur Yusuf Buratai in a secret mass burial of at least 347 victims in attempt to cover up the crimes.
