PoliticsRe: We Lack The Capacity To Prevent Corruption In Nigeria – Okonjo-Iweala by relagze: 2:48pm On Feb 18, 2015
Mention:
Abuja – The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said on Tuesday that corruption persisted in the country because Nigeria lacked the institutions, systems and processes to prevent it.

Okonjo-Iweala made this known when she spoke on the Topic: `Preventing Leakages in the Nigerian Economy` at the Catholic Caritas Foundation Forum in Abuja.

According to her, the absence of the relevant systems and institutions that will help check corruption has created opportunities for people to engage in the act.

“This thing has been with us and we must crack it. This is not something that started in this country today; but it is something that we must crack.

“Fundamentally, we have to ask ourselves, why has this continued to be a problem; I am convinced that it is because we constantly look at the symptoms and not the cause of the disease.

“The cause of the disease is we don’t have in place the institutions, the systems and the processes to block and prevent it in the first place.
“That’s the only difference between us and the people abroad.`

The minister assured that people would be compelled to do the right thing always if the appropriate systems were in place to block and prevent corruption.

She urged youths in the country to ask the relevant questions that would help tackle corruption in the country.
She said: “This is so important now because of technology and I am a total fan of the use of technology and electronic platforms to block the leakages in this country.

“We must use them the way they are being used in other countries.“
Okonjo-Iweala said that the introduction of the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMS) had helped to reduce physical movement of cash to make payments and curb corruption.

She said that the Integrated Personnel Payment System had also helped government to remove ghost workers from the system and save money in the process.

She said, “We have been able to weed out about 62,893 ghost workers till date saving N208.7 billion and we have not finished in the system. That is addressing the root cause.“

The minister said that the names of the persons found to be involved in the act had been sent to the ICPC for further action.
OKonjo-Iweala said that through the electronic wallet system introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, government had been able to reduce corruption in fertilizer distribution in the country.

According to her, 10.5 million farmers have been registered under the system with more than 6 million being able to access the product personally.

This, she said, had contributed to increased food production.
The minister said that with the creation of the Pension Transmission Administration Department as demanded by law, issues with old pension were being handled systematically
She said that 14 people were presently under trial for various pension scams in the country.

Commenting on the outcome of the forensic Audit on the alleged 20 billion dollars missing oil money, she said the ministry had written to the NNPC asking it to remit the amount as directed by the auditors. (NAN)

PoliticsRe: Uninterrupted Electricity Impossible In Nigeria Now— Power Minister: Prof. Nebo by relagze: 3:24pm On Feb 10, 2015
Segunod:
Miinister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, says it is impossible to provide constant, uninterrupted electricity to everyone in Nigeria in the near future.

Speaking with newsmen in London over the weekend, the minister said: “Nobody in the world can provide 24/7 electricity everywhere in Nigeria”, adding that 160,000 megawatts would be needed to do that. The current capacity is 4,500 megawatts.
“The cost of providing electricity per megawatt on average is $2billion. To get to where South Africa is, you will need about $3.2trillion (about N672trillion). Where will you find that kind of money?” he asked.

In addition to the huge amount of money involved, Prof. Nebo said power projects also take time to come to fruition, stressing that it takes between four and six years to deliver the power projects.
“You don’t buy these things off the shelves. It takes time to design, study, procure, manufacture, install and commission”, he said, but explained that the government had done so much on generation capacity, transmission and distribution infrastructure, which are key necessities in power supply.

He said 20,000 megawatts was needed to ensure constant power supply to major cities in the country that have been connected to the national grid, but said it would require a lot of resources and time to achieve the feat.

The minister further said the current facilities and infrastructure on the ground had the capacity to provide more than 5,000 megawatts in the country, but lamented that some saboteurs were bent on ensuring that the target is not achieved by vandalising gas pipelines on a regular basis.

He emphasised that the demand for electricity in Nigeria is so huge that “no matter what you do, once electricity gets to a place, people acquire more facilities, buy refrigerators and air-conditioners, and before you know it, what you think is enough for everyone has to be shared by so many people”.

He also said solar power could go a long way in solving Nigeria’s power problems, especially in the rural areas, disclosing that three communities, including Durumi in the suburbs of Abuja, have enjoyed 13 months of uninterrupted electricity since the start of the pilot scheme in December 2013.

I cant imagine this after all the trillion of dollars spent on power by the 16yrs reign of PDP in Nigeria
Then why can't they invite foreign multinational power companies? Let them do the feasibility study, how it can be accomplished, give them the necessary supports needed to get the job done. The economic return is huge for this country. We can't just look the other way. We are talking about a sector that can generate over a 100,000 jobs direct and indirect. And we have teeming population of unemployed youth. Naija what is going on? This is the 21st century. If PDP feels it is impossible please they should kindly bow out and give it to people who are positive and that can get this done.***sigh***. Jonathan Goodluck their is life beyond presidency, please leave.

PoliticsRe: Zahra - Buhari's Daughter - Lives & Studies In The United Kingdom by relagze: 9:56am On Jan 14, 2015
lurther:
Yes! No doubt, Buhari's daughter trended on twitter yesterday, after some of her pictures went viral. I am very happy for her that as a beautiful daughter of Buhari, a leading presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, Priviledges like this come along.

I am not actually fused by Buhari's daughter trending because she is beautiful or she is Buhari's daughter, i am so shocked about the information i got about her.

The Information is that, Buhari's daughter is based and schooling in the united kingdom. She is a 400level student of microbiology in the university of surrey Uk according to lindaikeji.

My take on this:

1. It is no secret that why our politicians keep their children abroad, they use other people's children to achieve their aim.

2. Residing and schooling in the United Kingdom is very expensive. Buhari have been touted severally to be a saint that cant afford even a house, but, just one of his daughter that we have information on, is schooling in the Uk, I don't know about his other children.

3. It is high time nigerians as a whole begin to ask pertinent questions about our leaders and not just follow sheepishly whatever they hear. A politician will always be a politician.

4. Nigeria has pressing issues, very pressing issues, i actually do expect a Hashtag like #SayNoToTerrorism to trend amongst our youth in solidarity with the nigerian Army fighting night and day to end terrorism, but, it is a lady based in the UK that is trending.

5. Say No To Election Violence. #SayNoToElectionViolence should be our watchword. Why we kill ourselves, destroy our hard-earned properties, let us ask ourselves, were are the politicians of this children. Are their own properties even being tampered with?

My take on this issue is not just based on only Buhari's daughter, but on all politicians in these country. I strongly believe that, why they fight for power here, their children are somewhere abroad enjoying the perks of being offsprings of them.

#SayNoToTerrorism , #SayNoToElectionViolence
The level of your ignorance is really alarming. How can you explain to the outside world that a veteran General and a former Head of State should not be able to afford send his child overseas for education. Even without being a former Head of State just being a General in any Nation Army is enough for you. Stop heating up unnecessary polity with your ignorance. Laymen send your children overseas for education. Kini Big Deal.

Hello House,

Pls., I am in need of help/advice here. I had a US student visa interview scheduled for Nov. 18, 2014 but was resheduled due to system issues at the embassy to Dec. 5, 2014. My school resumes by Dec. 4, 2014 as stated on my form I-20. Should I take the the 'emergency appointemnt route'?

The web page states that :

Students or exchange visitors

Purpose of travel is to begin or resume a valid program of study in the United States within 60 days when no regular visa appointments are available. This option is limited only to students and exchange students who are within 60 days of their start date. It is also limited only to applicants who have not been refused a visa within the last six months at either the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos.

Essential documentation:
1.Original Form I-20 or DS-2019 indicating start date of program within 60 days.
2.Evidence that you have paid the SEVIS fee (when applicable).

Pls. advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks

This is my first time of posting topics on this site, and I am using this opportunity to thank nairaland and all members for their support when I was looking for job. Since I was introduced to this site I got hooked, even though I don't have a job but I still have hope in God and in nairaland. People would jeered at me anytime I am on the nairaland site. Thinking that I am just wasting my time. My dear brethren by September last year I got a job in Celtel through nairaland. I am assuring all dear members who are still on the lookout for a well meaning job that God would provide just have faith and it will happen use my story as a source of inspiration be firm and God will take control.
