Politics › Suleja Xmas Day Blast: We Are Responsible, Says Boko Haram! by Relax101(op): 3:45pm On Dec 25, 2011
BAUCHI (AFP) – A purported spokesman for Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility for a Christmas Day explosion near a church outside the Nigerian capital that killed at least 27 people.

“We are responsible for all the attacks in the past few days, including today’s bombing of the church in Madalla,” Abul Qaqa told AFP by phone. “We will continue to launch such attacks throughout the north in the next few days.”

SAUDI ARABIA has embarked on another orgy of head-chopping, decapitating a total of 55 people so far this year - almost double the executions carried out in 1998 - including two women who were beheaded in public for allegedly trafficking in drugs.
Hawa Faruk and Aisha Saada Kassem had their heads cut off with swords - after their scarves were torn from their heads by their executioners - in Riyadh and Jeddah. Both women were Nigerian; Ms Faruk was decapitated on 28 May and Ms Kassem was executed before a large crowd outside a mosque just a week ago.

Needless to say, there have been no words of condemnation in the West, let alone in the United States, whose troops continue to be based in the kingdom and whose oil investments in Saudi Arabia render even the slightest criticism impossible. The women - like the 53 male victims - were tried in semi-secret courts. An unusually large number of beheadings this year were carried out on foreigners: they included 10 Pakistanis for drug offences, five Nigerians (four for alleged drug offences, one for armed robbery), three Indians (two for drug-related crimes, one for rape), two Afghans, two Indonesians and a Syrian.

As usual, the Saudis announced each decapitation with a short paragraph in the government-controlled press. Aisha Kassem's execution - "with a sabre", it was gruesomely announced - took place after she was convicted of "smuggling cocaine hidden in her intestines".

Riyadh – Saudi Arabia on Sunday beheaded three Nigerians accused of murdering and robbing a fellow citizen, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency.

Mohammed Ismail, Abdulqudus Adam and Mohammed Kabir Ali broke into the house of Omar Mohammed Adam where “they beat him and his wife, tied them down and strangled Omar to death,” said the statement.

Then they burgled their compatriot’s home, it added.

The beheadings in the western Red Sea city of Jeddah brings the number of executions in the ultra-conservative kingdom this year to 31, according to an AFP tally based on official and human rights group reports.

On June 10, London-based watchdog Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions in the previous six weeks.

It said 15 people were executed in May alone.

In 2009, the number of executions reached 67, compared to 102 in 2008.

violation, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict interpretation of Islamic shari’ah law.

KANO (AFP) – A wave of attacks in northern Nigerian cities attributed to a radical Islamist group killed 46 people, medical sources said Saturday, raising the death toll sharply from an earlier seven.

The two days of attacks which saw three cities rocked by explosions and gunfire were carried out by the Boko Haram group, according to a purported spokesman, Abul Qaqa, who spoke to AFP.

“We are responsible for the attacks in Maiduguri, Damaturu and Potiskum. We carried out the attacks to avenge the killings of our brothers by the security forces in 2009,” he said.

“We will continue to wage war against the Nigerian state until we abolish the secular system and establish an Islamic state”.

Nineteen bodies were taken to the morgue of a hospital in Damaturu while another 20 were counted at a morgue in Maiduguri, the sources said.

“So far, we have 19 bodies at the morgue, including three soldiers, three policemen and 13 civilians, they all have gunshot wounds on them. Among the soldiers, one was brought on the first day of the attack (Thursday),” said an official at the hospital in Damaturu.

Arrested Boko Haram members
Those reported killed earlier included senior police officers and a soldier in Damaturu, and police and a civilian in Potiskum.

Police in the region said officers had battled the attackers while truckloads of soldiers were seen arriving in Damaturu on Friday before authorities gave residents 30 minutes to evacuate one neighbourhood.

A Damaturu resident said suspected members of Boko Haram took to the streets on Thursday shooting and setting off explosions at random.

Residents in Maiduguri reported six explosions which sent people fleeing.

Maiduguri has borne the brunt of the violence attributed to Boko Haram, which has claimed responsibility for scores of attacks in the north as well as the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in the capital Abuja that killed at least 24.

A military task force has been deployed in Maiduguri in a bid to stop the sect, but it has in turn been accused of major abuses, including shooting civilians and burning their homes in the wake of bomb attacks.

Damaturu was hit by coordinated attacks in early November claimed by Boko Haram which left some 150 people dead.

Earlier this week, blasts at a house in Damaturu rented by suspected members of the sect left one dead and several wounded.

Boko Haram launched an uprising in 2009 put down by a brutal military assault which left some 800 dead as well as its mosque and headquarters in Maiduguri in ruins.

It went dormant for about a year before re-emerging in 2010 with a series of assassinations. Bomb blasts have since become frequent and have grown in sophistication.

There has been intense speculation over whether Boko Haram has formed links with outside extremist groups, including Al-Qaeda’s north African branch.

The group is believed to have a number of factions with varying aims.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation with some 160 million people, roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

Politics › Nigerians Are Still The Most Optimistic People In The World. How? by Relax101(op): 9:07pm On Dec 24, 2011
A year ago, a Gallup poll revealed that Nigerians were the most optimistic people on the planet. This year, we have topped the poll yet again: when considering economic prosperity, Nigerians have only the sunniest of dispositions. My immediate response was: "Really? Again? How?"

Last year I placed the source of Nigerian optimism at having lived through bad times and surviving. Even so, after the 2011 we've had, it is nothing short of miraculous that Nigerians have maintained their optimism. The single biggest issue right now is probably the government proposal to remove the fuel subsidy on petrol. The finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has speculated that the price of a litre of petrol will jump from 65 naira (40 cents) to 139 naira a litre. The government says the money can be channelled more effectively into developing infrastructure; opponents worry that the prices of commodities will badly hit ordinary people.

This was also a landmark year for the Nigerian bank robber. Reports of gruesome robberies across the country forced banks to shut down branches in several states; during a particularly bad week in November, entire regions were left with no open banks. The Islamist terror group Boko Haram continued its campaign across the north-east and Abuja this year, launching a suicide car bomb attack on the Abuja police headquarters in June and bombing the UN building in August.

Then there was the story that shocked an entire nation – the gang rape of a young woman at Abia State University by five young men, who filmed their actions and distributed the recording until it found its way on to the internet. At the time, the governor of Abia rejected reports of the rape, saying they were a "satanic falsehood" and a "tissue of lies". Despite widespread outrage, no one has ever been formally charged with the rape, and the identity of the victim remains a mystery.

Last month, a bill to outlaw gay marriage and ban public displays of affection between homosexual couples, as well as making gay organisations illegal, was introduced. When Britain and the US threatened to withhold aid to countries that do not respect gay rights, the senate president, David Mark, responded: "If there is any country that does not want to give us aid or assistance just because we want to hold on to our values, that country can keep her aid and assistance."

So, what the hell have we got to be so damn optimistic about? My father argues that "Nigerians live on hope. Belief in religion outweighs common sense. That's the key thing." A Nigerian friend Funlayo, who lives in Tunis, says simply: "We don't get angry like the Tunisians; we're mad for a while, and then we start to make excuses."

On the one hand, it's nice to write pieces on the legendary optimism of the Nigerian. But on the other hand, is it a sustainable optimism? Whether it's a question of cultural philosophy – a natural resilience or wilful denial – is moot. With 40% of the population under the age of 14, and the Arab spring less than 1,500 miles away, maybe it's time we started getting a little less optimistic and little more angry.

Nigerians have been able to swindle the Citi Bank in New York of about 30 billion dollars by getting it to honour a forged cash payment request from Ethiopia's Central Bank.

Three Nigerian men were arrested in Seoul on Thursday for allegedly withdrawing millions of dollars from Citi Bank in New York on the forged cash payment request, South Korean Police said.

The suspects, whose names were withheld, were reported to police by one of the local banks in Seoul to which the money had been remitted for their collection, said Han Jeong, Head of the Foreign Affairs Investigation Department of Yongsan Police Station.

"The suspects say they have already handed over most of the money to Ethiopian residents in Korea," Han said.

In August, the suspects sent a forged cash payment request from the National Bank of Ethiopia to the New York headquarters of the U.S.'s largest bank, requesting some of the Ethiopian deposits be sent to bank accounts in several countries, including South Korea, China and Tanzania, police said.

Citibank transferred about 6.4 million dollars to four Korean banks in Seoul, and the Nigerians have already withdrawn 5.68 million dollars.

The Police caught the suspects while trying to withdraw the remaining 720,000 dollars from a local Kookmin Bank, Korea's largest lender, which had received a request from Citibank to suspend the payment.

"After belatedly discovering that the documents had been forged, Citibank notified the Korean banks," Han said. "A Korean bank clerk thought there was something fishy about them and reported the matter to the Police."

Two of the suspects were in Korea on a business visa, while another was in the country illegally, Han said.

Police said Citibank officials told them that the forged document had signatures from the chief and the directorial board of the Ethiopian Central Bank and that the fraudulent remittances to several countries totalled as much as 30 billion dollars. It is not known whether the fraudulent scheme has been detected in other countries.

Police said they have yet to investigate whether the fraud could extend into a global financial scam or how the document forgery involving the central bank was possible in the first place.

All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA,) yesterday joined many others to condemn Lagos state government and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) for the toll collection on Lekki-Epe expressway and "wickedly increasing tuition fees in Lagos State University (LASU.)"

A press statement signed by the party's publicity secretary, Sanjo Olawuyi accused Governor Babatunde Fashola and ACN of inflicting more pains on the citizenry against comfort and meaningful development promised during electioneering tours, saying, "Fashola's government is not masses oriented at all, in fact his administration had totally deviated from the progressives that it claims to belong to.

"It is overtly seen that, most of his initiatives that, supposed to be massively applauded by the masses; as the dividend of democracy, have over nightly turned out to be the source of massive-cum-masses exploitation and frustration," Olawuyi wrote.

According to APGA, "Currently, Lagos state government came out with new school fees regime which was wickedly and unilaterally increased to N240, 000 per annum; this is a ploy to massively send out all the poor students out of LASU; this is far out of the democratic dividends expected from the ACN government of Lagos State.

"This is the same government that hyped free education as its main selling point during the April 2011 general elections; who is fooling who?" it asked, recalling, "If we can remember, the UPN regime of Lateef Jakande that established LASU did not establish it to be an institution that will turn out to commercialized."

The party lamented that, "It is to a dismay that, some of the roads constructed during the first regime of Barrister Raji Fashola are now presenting defects, chief among the defects is big pot hole(s), which may be attributed to the fact that, those road construction contracts were not awarded to competent road construction companies or the technical aspects of the project were politicized; on a good day, a well constructed road supposed to last for a minimum of seven years or at least four years.

"In order for Gov. Fashola to consolidate his policy of Commercialized Governance, his administration had put everything in place to be collecting toll fees at the remaining few roads that, have not developed pot-holes, a typical example of this is the toll fees that are now being collected by the Lagos State Government, at the Admiralty Bus Stop of Lekki-Epe Express Way.

"In the same vein, it is unfair to note that, the ACN regime of Barr. Fashola has succeeded in commercializing virtually every aspect of his regime. This could likewise be seen at all the general hospitals in Lagos State, where drugs are sold at exorbitant prices. This is the same government that is busy with media hypes that, health care in Lagos is free," APGA listed.

It however suggested that men of the state Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) need to be professionally trained to be guiding vehicle drivers/owners and other road users on the best way to use the roads and not to be carrying out fund generating function for Lagos State Government, concluding, "LAGOS ACN please for God's sake; be masses friendly in your administration."

The Lagos State Government has shut down 250 unregistered auto and spare parts dealers’ shops in some parts of the metropolis for non compliance with the provisions of the law.
Officials of the Motor Vehicle and Administration Agency, MVAA stormed Egbega, Alimosho, Alagbado, Agege, Apapa, Ojo, Ijora areas of Lagos, southwest Nigeria and shut down the unregistered shops.
An auto dealer needs to pay N100,000 to register while a spare parts dealer needs to pay N50,000 for registration.
The enforcement is a joint one carried out by the MVAA with the Association of Auto and Spare Parts Dealers to rid the state of unregistered auto and spare parts dealers in the nooks and crannies of the state.
The state government vowed that the enforcement would be continuous until operators of auto and spare part dealers comply with the provisions of the law.
A statement from the MVAA said the government had declared zero tolerance on the dealers who operate illegally in the state.
The exercise is also to rid the state of unregistered auto and spare parts dealers selling vehicles with questionable sources and fake spare parts to unsuspecting members of the public.
Those whose shops had been shut will have to pay the stipulated amount of money as registration fees before they can be reopened, P.M.NEWS gathered.
The state enjoined auto and spare parts dealers to obtain their dealers permit as defaulters would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Crime › Olutosin Oduwole, Ex-siu Student, Sentenced To 5 Years In Threat Case by Relax101(op): 5:45pm On Dec 23, 2011
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — An aspiring rapper was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison over a 2007 money-demanding note that threatened a Virginia Tech-like killing spree, failing to convince a judge the writing was innocent lyrics and other musings.

A barely audible Olutosin Oduwole insisted in court that he "did not mean to incite fear."

"That was never my intention. That is not my character," said the 26-year-old rapper and former Southern Illinois University student. The note was found in his car on the college's campus.

Madison County Circuit Judge Richard Tognarelli said jurors were right when they convicted Oduwole in October of attempting to make a terrorist threat, a felony.

"The jury found that this was not a song. They found it was a threat, and I do not disagree with them," the judge said of the case.

Oduwole stared blankly toward Tognarelli when the judge rejected the defense's call for probation and ordered what he described as "appropriate" prison time. The sentence was well short of the maximum 15-year term prosecutors were seeking.

Tognarelli also sentenced Oduwole to 364 days and a $1,000 fine on a related conviction of illegally having or storing a loaded pistol in his on-campus apartment the day he was arrested in July 2007, just months after the Virginia Tech rampage that left 32 people dead along with the gunman.

Tognarelli ordered the terms to be served at the same time, minus whatever time Oduwole has already spent in jail. He rejected Oduwole's requests for a new trial and release on bond pending his appeals, saying he still sees Oduwole as a public threat.

Oduwole was attending the Illinois school's 13,000-student Edwardsville campus, northeast of St. Louis, when campus police found a piece of paper in his abandoned car, which they had impounded and was out of gas. The writing demanded payment to a PayPal account, threatening "if this account doesn't reach $50,000 in the next 7 days then a murderous rampage similar to the VT shooting will occur at another highly populated university. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!"

While referencing the Virginia Tech massacre, the writing did not make any direct reference to targeting the Edwardsville campus.

Even before the piece of paper was found in his car, Oduwole was being scrutinized by federal agents. A gun dealer had tipped them off earlier in the month that Oduwole appeared overly anxious to get four semiautomatic weapons – including an Uzi-like Mac 10 – that he had ordered.

Prosecutors said in court Wednesday that the totality of those circumstances, along with the loaded gun found in Oduwole's apartment, constituted a potential danger that could not be ignored.

"I'm having a hard time coming up with a scenario where that isn't threatening serious harm," prosecutor John Fischer argued, insisting that Oduwole be given a tough sentence that could dissuade others from acting similarly. "Having a loaded gun on campus is inappropriate, regardless of the threat. The threat rises it to another level."

Oduwole's attorneys, as they had at trial, countered that the "note" was "nothing more than a piece of scrap paper with private thoughts, the beginning of a song." They said the writing found crumpled in his abandoned car was never meant to be made public or shared.

"Olutosin Oduwole was prosecuted for his thoughts," Jeffrey Urdangen argued on Oduwole's behalf. "At the end of the day, judge, everything else being equal, I can honestly characterize this as a First Amendment train wreck."

After Wednesday's sentencing, Oduwole pleaded guilty to felony charges of theft and computer fraud related to his online sale of a gun he did not have, though he collected money from the would-be buyer. Oduwole was sentenced to 2 1/2 years of probation on those charges, which will be served with the prison time.
