Silence. There is absolutely nothing wrong in voting for our candidates. The only reason we succeeded was because it was allowed, for if it wasnt we wouldnt have been able to. Maybe if there were a system like 1 vote per IP, then we mightnt, but then again, you have proxy systems. Oops.

By Musa Simon Reef
Boko Haram yesterday reacted formally to the barrage of condemnations against its Christmas Day bombing, insisting that what it did was correct and vowed to carry out more attacks.

The Islamic sect, whose actual name is Jama’atu Ahlissunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, confirmed in a statement issued by its leader Imam Abu-Muhammad Abubakar bin Muhammad Shekau that it was responsible for the December 25 bombing of a church in Madalla, a suburb of Abuja, in which at least 37 people were killed.

Shekau said in the statement written in the Hausa language and e-mailed to media houses by the group’s spokesman Abul Qaqa: “I am informing all Nigerians and the rest of the world that there is no doubt that we committed that act and God’s willing we will carry out further attacks.”

He revealed that the attacks are meant to avenge the “mass killing of Muslims carried out by Christians with the connivance of government” in northern towns like Kaduna, Zonkwa, Langtang, Yelwan Shendam, Jos, Tafawa-Balewa, and Numan, as well as in Shagamu and Ikoyi, Lagos in the south. The latest of such killings, according to the group, took place a few months ago on Eid el-Fitr Day in Jos, the Plateau state capital, during which non-Muslims cannibalised the burnt corpses of victims.

“We swear by Allah that we will avenge any form of injustice committed, being committed or to be committed against Muslims. This is just the beginning,” Shekau vowed.

The group also questioned the stance taken by Muslim leaders and traditional rulers who condemned the Christmas Day killings, saying they have no right to decide what Islam preaches on the responsibility of Muslim activists.

According to it, “the so-called Muslim leaders” should know that God, in the Qur’an (2:194) urges Muslims to avenge any transgression committed against them by non-Muslims. It also referred the Sultan of Sokoto, whom it derisively called “Emir of Sokoto,” to Qur’anic chapters and verses 2:190-194; 9::36, and 22:39-41, as well as the 134th Tradition in Sahih Muslim on the concept of jihad or holy war.

Shekau challenged the Muslim leaders to tell Nigerians why they did not condemn the Eid el-Fitr Day killings in Jos, which was documented on video, as well as the alternative way of avenging the killings since they found the Boko Haram way unacceptable.

The militant leader also denied the insinuations allegedly made in some quarters that a former minister of information, Prof. Jerry Gana, and secretary-general of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Elder Sa’idu Dogo, were sponsors of the group, asking rhetorically, “Is this, then, the job they sponsored us to carry out?”

Sports / Lyn Oslo Offer Akwa Ibom N920m Stake by Relax101(m): 5:48pm On Dec 30, 2011
Former John Mikel Obi's Norwegian club, Lyn Oslo, is offering Akwa Ibom State 30% stake in the club thought to have a financial value of about N920m.

If the two parties eventually strike a deal, the Norwegian club will set up an academy in the South-South Nigerian state and will also provide technical and counterpart support to see the team blossom.

Complete Sports gathered that transaction between the club and Akwa Ibom State is getting close to maturity.

The deal is being brokered by a Nigerian agent whose firm has marketing right to source for investors for the club from Nigeria, Africa and the Middle East.

The agent is understood to have links with an ex -Nigeria international pulling the strings for the state which also has a Premier League club in the country.

Sports / Oba: I’m Ready To Drop My Ear Rings For Keshi! by Relax101(m): 5:42pm On Dec 30, 2011
FOOTBALL:

Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has told Complete Sports that he is ready to remove his diamond earrings to play for the Super Eagles under Stephen Keshi.

Keshi has placed a ban on the use of earrings among players of the national team and the Rubin Kazan forward insists that he has no problem with the new rule under the former Mali and Togo coach.

"I have no problem with that," began the former Newcastle forward. “I just want to get back my chance and prove to him that I still have that goal scoring touch.

"He's experienced and I think the team will do far better in the New Year."

The former Wolfsburg striker, who paid a courtesy visit to the SOS village in Isolo yesterday to donate cash and food items, further stressed that it has been his dream to lend a helping hand to the less privileged.

Martins who took time out to play with the kids at the SOS village scored the only goal of the friendly encounter played at the football pitch.

He told Complete Sports after the game that he was so fulfilled watching the 'privileged kids’ show enthusiasm during the game and he also promised to help any outstanding player actualize his dream in the round lethal game.

"I will be willing to help anyone who shows exception in the game, but I must warn them football is not easy; they must be prepared to go the extra mile to become stars," Martins said.

He also debunked media rumors linking him back to the English premiership and Russian power house Anzhi Makhachkala when the transfer window re-opens January 1.

He said: "I have one and a half years left on my contract and that's all I know. I don't know anything about that and to add to that the manager at the moment doesn't want to release me."

He also expressed his desire to score for the team in their clash against Rwanda whom he has scored three goals against in the past.

He said: “I’ve played against Rwanda in the past, and I know how tough they could be. I gathered that we will be playing on a synthetic pitch but I'm not bothered about that. I'm desperate to get back and help the team soar higher again because we all have roles to play in the rebirth of our senior national team.”

Politics / Revealed! Sylva Spent N8.6bn In Three Years On Retired Ex-militant Leaders by Relax101(m): 4:54pm On Dec 30, 2011
AT a time Gobernor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State is yet to come to terms with his failure to scale over a second term bid, an allegation involving a payment of N240million , on monthly basis, to each of the eight Ex-militant leaders in Bayelsa State, is now hanging on his head.

Under such a purported arrangement, each of the leaders is receiving N3million monthly.

This apart, the governor is being accused of giving the eight leaders “access to guns and dangerous weapons, “in the state.

The allegation, which amounts to a grievous indictment against the governor was leveled by an Olugbobiri indigene, from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Abiwai Lawson, in Yenagoa.

He told National Daily during an interview that “till date, the so called ex-militant are still carrying guns at Olugbobiri guiding their leaders when Federal Government had granted amnesty and Mop up guns in the creek.”

Olugbobiri known as “lion den,” during the militancy era by the solders, is the hometown of some of the retired militant leaders.

Lawson was piqued that “a governor, who cannot embark on any concrete projects can waste over N8.6 billion Naira militants, in the last three years, thereby stalling all developmental programmes for the state.”

He spoke, at length on what is perceived as the major reason behind Sylva's inability to secure a second term ticket, saying, “he promoted militancy and other activities in the state.'

He then raised salient posers on the controversial issue, saying, “all the Billions of Naira Sylva collected where has he kept or what has he done with them?”

Lawson was of the view that, “all the internal roads the governor is claiming to have constructed are not up to one bridge in neighboring Rivers State.”

In an obvious reference to Sylva's second term ambition, he said, “he failed because he refused to supervise and monitor some of the projects he said was awarded and allowed the Commissioners under him to misuse power and abuse of office.”

This apart, Lawson noted that “the bad eggs Sylva put in government are the same people fighting against him.”

A dependable source close to the Yenagoa Government House in commenting on the allegations said, under anonymity, “when the effect of the money was telling on the state government allocation, the governor wanted to stop the payment but was threatened by the ex-militant leaders that they will make the state ungovernable for him, hence he continued the payment.”

“You can imagine paying N240million for eight of them every month, while millions of Bayelsa don't have job, many cannot afford their daily bread; yet one man is collecting N30m every month.

“No drinking water in the state, the ten years Melford Okilo specialist hospital, none completion of projects he meant on ground, all infrastructures are down, even paying the meager salary of workers is a problem.

“Something urgent has to be done, otherwise the state is doomed,” the source said.

Reacting to political scenario in the state, an analyst, who also spoke under anonymity said, “Governor Sylva cannot decamp to another party because he will fail.”

He, therefore, enjoined the governor “to come down from his high ladder and work with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the state, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson.”

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Dofie Ola in his text massage response, merely said, “What a low quality fiction!”

Politics / Turai In Multi- Billion Naira Contract Mess by Relax101(m): 4:45pm On Dec 30, 2011
- FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed in dilemma

THE maxim which admonishes: ‘be kind to the people you meet on your way up because you may meet them on your way down,’ is true after all. Hajia Turai Umaru Yar'Adua might have started reaping the fruits of her (mis) conduct when her husband, Umaru Musa Yar'Adua who was the President of Nigeria took ill necessitating her being the most powerful individual in Presidential Villa, Asokoro, Abuja. During the over twelve months of her husband's last struggle with the ailment that eventually killed him, Turai was purported to be in charge of giving the final authority or any official matter or contract award which ordinarily is the prerogative of President Umaru Yar'Adua.

National Daily learned that the former first lady is seriously worried about the consequences of incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan's decision to review some of the multi-billion naira contract awarded during the last month of Yar'Adua's life particularly those awarded when he had been incapacitated and was unable to personally discharge his official responsibility. The president's intentions has received the backing of the senate.

- Usurpation

Competent sources affirmed that as was demanded by the constitution Jonathan was not allowed to take over the President's responsibility when he could no longer be effective for a long period until the senate intervened and pronounced Jonathan the acting president.

Turai was said to be at the head of the Cabal who seized the apparatus of government and took vital decision which in most cases served only selfish and parochial interest.

Following intense pressure from concerned groups and individuals, the senate resolved to probe into certain projects that touches on the infrastructural development and welfare of Nigerian's in the project area.

Among the progress currently under review is the Zuba-Mpape Road, Abuja, new residences for the Senate President, his Deputy, Speaker of the House of Representatives and his Deputy. The issue of 7 hectares of premium land she acquired on Airport Road, Lugbe, Abuja and the N10billion she raised purportedly to build her cancer centre is causing some furor between her and the new FCT minister who sources said is bent of retrieving the land.

- Retribution

National Daily learned that the current persistent effort to review inflated contracts and uncover abandoned ones said to be awarded under the influences of the former first lady was not only sanctioned by President Jonathan but was given a more sharpened teeth by the incumbent first lady, Patience Jonathan who is said not to have forgotten How Turai humiliated her husband when she was “Mama Excellency” of Aso Rock.

“The first lady is still recriminating the ordeal Jonathan was made to face by Turai when Yar'Adua was incapacitated instead of being made to hold brief for the former President, Jonathan was sidelined on the instructions of Turai. Jonathan spent hours in the office reading newspapers” an inside source said, adding: “the first lady is unhappy that Turai seized the opportunity to enrich herself through dubious projects and inflated contracts. She wants future first ladies to learn a lesson about humility”

The Senate in its determination to encourage prudent management of public funds, accountability and to drive the federal government's anti-corruption crusade empowered its committee on Federal Capital Territory headed by senator Smart Adeyemi to review some contracts awarded in the last days of Yar'Adua's administration. Among the contracts include Zuba-Mpape road dualisation which was awarded to CGC at the whooping cost of over N50 billion.

The committee reviewed the contract down ward and demanded that the contractors refund N30, billion paid as mobilization fee to the federal government.

- Sordid details

Competent sources disclosed that Turai and Adamu Aliero who was Minister of Federal Capital Territory were those that directly influenced the award of contract to CGC, a company said to represent Turai's interest.

The senator Adeyemi committee has so far made startling revelation of abandoned contracts in the FCT. “There's a case of four contractors that had been mobilized to build new residences for the Senate president, his deputy, speaker of the House of Representatives and his deputy for N3,044,675,974.54. The contract was awarded to Bussdor and company Limited, Persons Science Engineering Co. Limited, Shelter Development Limited. And Independent service Nigeria Limited but there was no visible progress on the contract execution.

Another dubious contract is the design and construction of the official residence of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which was originally awarded in October, 2009 at the cost of N7billion and reviewed upward to N16 billion. The senate committee discovered that the sites for the construction of these projects are non-existence.

“It is judgment day for Turai. It is time for her to account for her deeds as de facto president of Nigeria for the 12 months her husband was indisposed. She was absolutely in charge of decision making process and this affected appointments, contract and oil lifting license. During this period, the vice president (Goodluck Jonathan) was shut out. She was very hostile to the vice president, his staff and his wife, Patience. The incumbent first lady who was the wife of the vice president then, has not forgotten that experience. Now that her husband has become the president, she wants to cut the former first lady down to seize that is why she is influencing her husband's supporters in the senate to uncover Turai's fraudulent contract awards “our source said.

National Daily learned that the specific target of the probe are the contracts awarded by the FCT while the late President was either away in Saudi Arabia for treatment and when he was invalid in the presidential Villa.

Senator Smart Adeyemi, Senate Committee Chairman on the FCT is said to be vested with the responsibility to coordinate other “friends” of the first lady the senate to galvanize support for the senate to pass a resolution to review all contracts awarded by the FCT administration during the entire Yar'Adua years.

The executive arm of the “contract Review Project” is said be under the coordination of Senator Bala Mohammed, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Mohammed according to sources, has began moves to retrieve the land by cancelling the previous documents concerning the 7 hectares of land awarded to Turai by his predecessors, Adamu Aliero.

- Dilemma

However, when Information filtered into her, Turai was said to have made desperate effort to show that “there is work in progress at the site” and that the project has not been abandoned. It sources said that Mohammed is under pressure to confiscate the huge expanse of land a situation which is said to have turned a dilemma for the FCT minister whose appointment into office was said to have been influenced by the incumbent first lady. Mohammed's dilemma is allegedly heightened by the fact that he desires to run as governor of Bauchi State which he had the support of his state godfather, Governor Isa Yuguda. However, Yuguda is Yar'Adua's son in-law being married to one of his daughters, Nafsat, Yuguda will not support Mohammed to undo his mother in-law, Turai, so, Mohammed is in torn between loyalty to his Aso Rock benefactor and to his future ambition.

Sports / Samuel Osei Kuffour: I'm A Nigerian From Sagamu by Relax101(m): 4:26pm On Dec 30, 2011
CELEBRATED Black Stars of Ghana defender, Samuel Osei Kuffour, has revealed that he is a Nigerian from Sagamu, Ogun State.

The former Bayern Munich of Germany star player disclosed that he was born by a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother.

"My mother did not show me neither did she tell me about any of my father's relation, so up til now I don't know anybody in Nigeria, all what I can confirm is that I am from Sagamu."

While speaking on Nigeria's failure to book a ticket to play m next year's African Nations Cup, Kuffour stated that he believes the Super Eagles of Nigeria's absence at the 2012 Nations Cup will not take the shine from the championship, as this goes to show that other nations are improving in the game.

The Bayern Munich former star said last weekend in Accra that the absence of Nigeria, Cameroon and Egypt would make other top teams to sit up, as there are no minnows in the game anymore. "That countries like Nigeria, Cameroon and Egypt did not make it to the 2012 Nations Cup showed that other nations are working to demystify the super powers of the game in Africa, he said.

"We have to respect teams that qualified for the 2012 Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon because they are good to have made it to the last 16 m the continent. If Nigeria did not qualify, they have to accept it in good faith because from 19JS4 to 1992, Ghana did not qualify for the Nations Cup. "What Nigeria needs to do is to put themselves together and begin to rebuild and now that they have Stephen Keshi as the coach, I believe they can get back to their form again.

Ghana could not qualify for the 2004 Nations Cup but made it to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. I think this can also happen to Nigeria that if they don't feature in 2012 Nations Cup, they can qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil."

Politics / How Petrol Importers Milk The Economy – Nimasa Boss! by Relax101(m): 2:07pm On Dec 30, 2011
By GODFREY BIVBERE

Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Patrick Akpobolokemi has said that petrol importers have continued to milk the nation of millions of dollars annually by pretending to import products from abroad.

Akpobolokemi who spoke with Vanguard in an exclusive interview in his office said that most of the importers actually get their products from local refineries and when they get to the Lagos waters, they discharge same into another vessel.

The NIMASA boss further explained that the new ship is then taken outside the nation’s territorial waters and returned back into the country with the claim that they have imported the product.

ship
According to him, “We so much talk about subsidy removal in Nigeria. People carry product from Nigeria precisely from Port Harcourt for instance, maybe the point of destination is also Port Harcourt. Some of these ships are found in Lagos discharging into another ship from where it is moved outside Nigerian waters and then brought back into the country as import.

“It is then recorded that they have supplied petroleum product, asking for subsidy. In actual fact, what is the true subsidy? You should not be arguing with the President on the removal of the subsidy, it is because this illegality is so much. When it is removed, lets see how somebody can parade various port asking for subsidy.”

Akpobolokemi further explained that the level of illegal bunkering and other illegal activities along the nation’s waterways had gone unchecked for years and a lot of industry operators, including the press have been complaining that the agency has not done enough to arrest the situation.

He pointed out that since his appointment, he and the management team had worked hard to ensure that they brought sanity to marine business along the nation’s waterways.

In his words, people have been saying that “we are suppose to confront illegal bunkering, that it is within our jurisdiction that we are responsible for whatever cargoes we bring to the ports. We must know whether it is in accordance with the safety standard of the country.”

“We must be interested because we have to collect our three per cent revenue. So you must declare what you are carrying in your stock and where you are taking it to. Before now, these things were not done. We have been arresting and detaining (vessels involved in illegal operations) and if we go on with it, the economic sabotage is going to stop,” he concluded.

Gbawe:

You should learn the truth about the whole subsidy issue before speaking ignorantly. The Major marketers , often with majority of their operation legitimate, will not be affected by subsidy removal . It is Nigerians and , at worst, the many "independent" marketers that came on board under Yar Adua and GEJ , often with no background in  the oil business, who will lose out.

You need to know the real issues instead of sounding like a country bumpkin with silly talk about "people wey dey benefit from subsidy na dem dey whine for NL". You may not have a real life or perspective beyond NL but highly simplistic to think all of us are in the same boat as you because we comment here. I personally speak only because of what subsidy removal portends for ordinary Nigeria and not because I will be affected by subsidy removal either way.

Let me rephrase it. If you dnt support subsidy removal , you(Gbawe and your likes) wholly support corruption or you have friends/associates that benefits from the current system.

^^^ I dont believe that crap.

oyb:

you people are amazing - must you do your best to turn every tragedy into an ibos vs the rest of the world?

is it not enough that nigerians died?

is it not enough that Christians died?

what is it with you lot that EVERYTHING must be about you?

Boko Haram has been on a bombing campaign since this time last year

i didn't see anyone bandying any 98% of the victims were hausas during the mammy market bombings

60% of the victims were birom during jos attacks

80% of the victims were fulani during the unbroken spate of bombings in maiduguri

you lot should grow up and come to terms with the fact that boko haram is about  politics , nigeria religion, and certainly not about ibos. wtf?

my condolences go to all the victims, they are all nigerians and all victims of boko haram.

Shove your condolence up in your ripped arse.
I wish I could see you in real life.
Honestly, I wish I could.
Your hate na first class. I mean you wicked from inner soul.

Oba234:

RIP to the victims, but I am not surprised they were Igbos. I actually said the same thing when I heard of the bombings. Everybody knows Igbo and catholicism goes hand in hand. All Nigerians that I know that are Catholic are Igbos so not suprising. Now if it had been RCCG or Winners where Yoruba people typically go, most of the casualties would have been Yoruba. Please, i don't think this is an attack on Igbo people.

dayokanu:

This is no attack on any specific ethnic group it was aimed at Xtians simple regardless of where they are from

They bombed an MFM church which I believe would be populated by Yorubas.

Do you think Boko Haram cares whether the xtian killed is Ibo, Yoruba, Ijaw, or Berom?

Hahahaha, wetin man no go hear for NL.
You don see am. chei!
