missjekyll: Nobody is as dangerous as the man with nothing more to lose.
Nothing will ever be dangerous enough to deter an asylum seeker desperate enough to trek here from Afghanistan. Put sharks in the channel? They will come. Razors in the channel, they ll come.
Its a losing battle. Just build processing centres in France like our very sensible neighbours have been offering for years and stop the risky crossings. The people are not sailing from Afghanistan or syria to the UK neither do they just appear in the UK. The actually come from france. They have the option of staying in france or moving to other EU countries. If they know there is a fair possibility they will be sent to Rwanda, they will rather stay in France or move to other EU countries. The risk of being deported to Rwanda if they see it as very probable will almost certainly change the calculus of their decisions. That france will allow the UK manage an asylum centre on their soil is a fairly optimistic thought. |

Zahra29: My dear brother,
The whole point is that the Rwanda deterrent is not working. The boats are still arriving, in increasing number.
Also have you looked at the details of the Rwanda plan? The elephant in the room is that even when fully operational , Rwanda can only accept a very limited number of migrants:
News reports have said that the numbers sent to Rwanda would initially be low, with Rwanda suggesting it will take 1,000 asylum seekers in the five-year trial period.
1000 in 5 years? So approx 200 a year
Meanwhile over 10,000 have arrived in the year to June so far. What do you propose happens to the remaining 19,800 that can't be sent to Rwanda? That is the ones they can actually find as many land and then abscond. It's not like they'll be sitting patiently in their rooms waiting to be one of the sample few that are put on the plane.
And this is assuming the planes actually take off as there will be a myriad of human rights challenges lodged in the courts against removal from the UK.
Why haven't any planes left yet? The only person they've sent over is the man they paid a few thousand bob to leave!
The scheme is as dead as a dodo, Tories are just trying to pull a fast one and wasting £ hundreds of millions of our money in the process. The deterrent effect will not work if people doubt you'll ever be able to use it. If Rishi had done just one trip and showed the potential to do more, that number will definitely come down. Many in his own party strongly opposed it, opposition parties promised to scrap it. So no deterrence effect. Even if Rwanda takes 1,000. When you realise you could be one of the 1,000, you have to rethink the equation. It's like using having an expensive weapon that people doubt you'll ever be able to use. Will not keep you safe. Not supporting or speaking against the Rwanda thing sha. Britain grew wealthy and prosperous on the back of sailing to other people's shore illegally to claim the benefits of those countries .
They only receive a pinch of what they've done to others over the years and are already irked. |

It's clear Labour would likely have the day. I'd be keen to see how they'd meet peoples expectations. I'd be particularly interested after the first two years as their initial get out of jail card (like PMB) would be '14 years of Tory failure' The NHS will always be a bone in the throat of any government. Currently, £1 of every £10 is spend on the nhs, far more than any sector. The nhs probable worked well when the country had a young population and a fast growing economy. The population is aging, as a developed country it is unlikely to grow at a very fast pace, cost of medicare has gone up....something has to give. Either make more services privatized or strip other sectors of funds to prop up the nhs |

Funnyman: Why should I be more comfortable doing business with companies owned by other nationalities but not Nigerian owned? Why cant our people do business with acceptable standard as obtainable in other societies? Why should Nigerians always see opportunity to cheat others in all their endeavors? TO THE ISSUE, I booked a ticket with wakanow on feb 8, 2024 (my first time ever and a mistake). I paid 911 USD for a round trip from NYC to Lagos. Wakanow issued the ticket but at the time I only wanted to seize the opportunity for the low fare, my travel itinerary was not certain yet, the supposed flight was for April end till may end. By march 1st, it was obvious, I cannot travel by April ending, so I reached out to wakanow to cancel the ticket. Mind you, the ticket I booked was a fully REFUNDABLE TICKET with Royal Air Maroc according to wakanow website before I paid. Wakanow said they will only refund about 800k naira and I will forfeit the rest, mind you I paid in dollars but they want to refund less than half of the money in naira. I agreed that they should go ahead and cancel the ticket and refund me, that was around March 1. Since then I have been messaging wakanow via WhatsApp and mail, they are always telling me they are working on it on WhatsApp while they have stopped replying my mails. Meanwhile, I reached out to Royal air maroc which confirmed I should get in touch with wakanow as my funds are no longer with them. It is almost 3 months I cancelled now and I cant get my money back, I cant book another flight since my funds are now tied down. Why is it so difficult to refund me for almost 3 months when their website says refunds are processed in 2 - 3 weeks? WHY IS WAKANOW TREATING A FELLOW NIGERIAN LIKE THIS? I AM NOW PAYING BACK MONEY WAKANOW STOLE FROM ME TO THE CREDIT CARD COMPANY. WAKANOW IS A THIEVING COMPANY. WAKANOW REFUND MY MONEY. Front page please. can you show evidence that the ticket was fully refundable from wakanows end? why I asked is, when I used wakanow last (a few years back), they did not have fully refundable tickets. |

Ofunaofu: Power is truly transient
About a year ago, Wike was governor, behaving like an emperor, but today, he is just a mere federal commissioner, working so hard, albeit failing woefully, to impress a notorious narcotics drug trafficker engaging in criminal state capture. governorship is a power position. In almost all duels where the incumbent governor took on senators, ex governors or commissioners, the governor triumphs. Lagos was the only state where the incumbent lost to an ex governor. Even in Kano, the governor triumphs the ex governor who is a sentaor and party chairman |

SerendipityHere: Morning everyone. does anyone know the implication of increasing your personal pension contribution at work?
Someone said if a person increases their personal pension it might affect chances of ILR as the pension is not taxed. How true is this please? I doubt this. It reduces your tax though. If your employer is matching your voluntary contribution, gives you "double pay". The catch is you may not be able to assess the money before 55 or 60 (cant remember the exact age) without paying some massive tax that will wipe off most of the portion contributed by your employer and still subject your portion of the contribution to tax also. |

BeckyB1: Greetings All. Please, I need clarification, and want to learn...
I am on a COS visa, and my sponsor have not given a shift since I arrived, but I have been doing my supplementary 20 hours with an agency and my tax code is 1257L.
Someone told me a few days ago that the tax code the agency is using for me is wrong as they are not my main employers.
I want to know the implications of this please. If you can, ask the supplementary employer to sponsor you. An employer that offers COS without shifts is risking home office cancellation of their license. You probably should check well before providing information to HMRC that suggests your supplementary job is now your main job as that brings to question the validity of your visa sponsorship and you may not be sure how things go from there. |

Thanks If it was revoke due to no fault of yours, your best bet is likely to find another job within the same healthcare sector. The good thing, there is high demand for the service. You should also be opened to relocating to another city if needed so your search is not restricted as I think you have 60 days to get a new sponsor |

KnowAll: 1. Free transport to work
2. Subsidised homes. Like the ones built by shagari in the 80’s . Little one two & 3 bedroom houses. They would pay N5000.00 per month
3. Build large cooperative stores that would sell groceries at rock bottom price. That means government would buy fruit and vegetables from farmers and subsidies them. Including meat rice& fish.
It can be done. There would be know reasons to increase wages which would eventually lead to a runaway inflation. The 650,000 labour is asking for would lead to runaway inflation just like in Zimbabwe. where do you expect the government to get the money to fund these subsidies? |
