Cross River State Civil servants have received their December salary, barely four days after getting their November pay, Brainnews report. This is even as the state is yet to receive federal allocation for November. In the past years it has become a tradition in the state under the governorship of Senator Ben Ayade, for workers in the state to receive their December salaries in November. According to reports, although a section of the workforce has on many occasions protested against early payment of salaries in the state, Governor Ayade has stayed steadfast to early payment of salaries. On the rationale for the payment of December late November, the Governor explained that the idea is to get workers to do their shopping early, to avoid inflation that always occasion shopping close to Christmas. “We pay workers in the state early to usher in the Christmas festivities that begin in the state on December 1st. Besides, it also saves our workers the stress and strain of shopping close to Christmas given the tendency for prices of goods to skyrocket. “So by paying early we ensure that our workers do their Christmas shopping early, thus getting true value for their money instead of buying goods at highly inflated prices if they shopped close to Christmas. Given that the payment of December salary was done early, he assured that salary for the month of January will also be paid early. “Because we have paid December salary early, we will also pay January salary early so as to assist our workers who are parents meet up with the obligation of paying schools fees for their children,” Ayade assured. Civil servants and pensioners in Ondo State on Tuesday protested against the alleged refusal of the state government to pay their salaries and allowances from the Paris Club refund. The pensioners accused the state government of not paying four months pensions, while some of them alleged that the government had been deducting their pension illegally since 2013. Similarly, the state workers, comprising members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress accused the state government of withholding and planning to divert the Paris Club refund to a fixed bank account. The protesters marched to the governor’s office in Alagbaka, Akure, singing anti-government songs and blocked the entrance gate of the governor’s office, preventing workers from going into the premises for several hours. Speaking on behalf of the pensioners, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Chief Rapheal Adetuwo, said the government owed the pensioners about N43bn from 2012 till date, adding that many members of the NUP had died of hunger. He said “If President Buhari saw salaries and pensions as means of livelihood and if he rightly dole out Paris Club refund to state governors to enhance the immediate payment of salaries and pensions, such money should be used for the purpose. “We have to embark on this protest to let the public know our plight. We can’t continue to keep quiet; the outstanding gratuities are getting too much, government must do something about it. “ In the same vein, the NLC Chairman in the state, Tayo Ogunleye, said the government had failed to pay the outstanding salaries and pensions of workers and pensioners as directed by the Federal Government. Ogunleye said, “The Paris Club refund was released by the Federal Government solely for the payment of arrears of salaries and pensions. No more, no less”. Also, the state TUC Chairman, Soladoye Ekundayo, said it was only the Ondo State Government that had refused to address its citizenry on the refund despite repeated demands by labour leaders. He said “It is disheartening to note that while other states have disbursed their refund according to the directive of the Federal Government, Ondo State Government pretends not to have received it “It is a bitter truth that the state government in connivance with the Office of the Accountant General has placed the Paris Club refund in a private interest-yielding account in one of the banks for the reasons best known to them.” The workers threatened to resume at the entrance of the state secretariat office on daily basis until the government settled the accumulated salaries and pensions’ arrears. However, the state’s Head of Service, Mr Toyin Akinkuotu, while addressing the protesting workers, said the government would not hide anything from them, promising that all workers and pensioners would soon get their pay. He told the workers that the Governor Rotimi Akeredolu-led administration had not owed salary since inception, stressing that the workers were paid as and when due and letters of 2018 promotion exercise had been issued to worker that were due for promotion. |
The NUT Chairman in Rivers State is indeed a mistake of a Man in leadership. For the fact that Rivers State Govt keep crediting our dues to them monthly, they don't care about our welfare. To play on Teachers intelligence, a times he will come on air and shout about promotion and arrears and you won't hear from him again for at least four months,he will shout again, go mute for another four months. Ngkpogene is a fraud |
waliezi:I wouldn't have dignified you with a response but just for the records,I believe u are an adult and should realise that salaries, pensions and gratuities and promotions are workers rights and not a privilege. Despite the fact that my account is yet to be credited, I need not remind you that I only gave my opinion just the same way you do have urs. I am neither PDP,APC or GDI etc, but if u feel this govt is the best for u no problem, its ur opinion and may I add also that God should bless you the same way wike blessed those whose plight I mentioned above. learn to mind your business and separate politics from governance. |
TheWatchDog:Salary issues aside, I have taken time to analyse the upcoming 2019 Gubernatorial Elections In Rivers and I came to the following postulations, 1- Gov Wike doesn't have the security Agencies to back him up as it was in 2015. 2- Gov Wike doesn't have federal might like it was in 2015 when The presidents wife stood for him. 3- Gov Wike Isn't carrying the state citizens along in terms of people knowing what's in the budget. 4- Gov Wike will have issues with sacked Time Riv workers voting for him. 5- RSSDS workers owed for three years and families whose children's scholarships were withdrawn will have issues voting for him 6- Pensioners will have issues voting for him due to non payment over three years. 7-Civil Servants which I am among them without promotion, being owed arrears, even those promoted still earn same thing with arbitrary deductions in salaries with frequent cum endless biometrics will have issues voting for him. 8-Sacked Ken saro wiwa polytechnic lecturers bori, will have issues voting for him. 9- The various LGA moribund fish farm workers and banana plantation will have issues voting for him. 10-Taxi & Keke drivers who pay different high levies will have issue voting for him. Even the Obio akpor boys who collect levies and seize peoples cars and goods will make his goodwill to reduce and they may have issues voting for him. In conclusion, its not going to be easy for him to win like it was in 2015 which was a walk over. |
If the emperor didn't remit salaries today, then it will after the Almighty PDP PRESIDENTIAL CONVENTION. He isn't backing Atiku,he knew Atiku will spend whatever billions it takes to emerge. So WIKES love & support was for GOV TAMBUWAL, so he needs cash to defeat ATIKU |
As usual, the emperor may value PDP PRESIDENTIAL convention more than workers salaries |
