In a bid to end the ongoing strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities since 5th of November, the Federal Government is expected to hold another emergency meeting with the union executives. It will be recalled that the last meeting held in November 15th which lasted for about six hours, ended in a deadlock as both parties refuse to come to a compromise. According to the ASUU president, prof Biodun Ogunyemi who stressed that the meeting is to address the 2017 memorandum of Action which he claimed the Federal Government neglected. The Federal Government delegation led by the minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige and the minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, will this evening, 26th of November meet with the Union Executive. We sincerely pray and hope that today's meeting will bring to an end the unpleasant scourge of the ongoing strike for interest of the Nigerian students.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that the results of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be released immediately. This was made known by the Registrar, Prof, Oloyede. According to him, the reason there will be delay in release of results is to review the activities of the candidates and to minimize the number of cancellations. The JAMB boss mentioned that last year the board proved a point that there is nothing extra ordinary in releasing results immediately. However, some results were later cancelled when the board found out what happened in some centres through the CCTV Cameras. So if we have to take two or three days to look at the conduct of the candidates before releasing the 2018 result so as to minimize cancellation, then we will do so.” He said Mr. Oloyede said no computer-based centre is allowed to collect any cash from the candidates for the main exam adding that the board will release the agreed sum of N600 per candidate due to the centres to them. The registrar urged candidates to adhere strictly to the date and time allocated to them for examination. He said any candidate who fails to turn up on schedule for his or her examination automatically misses the examination. The examination is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 9, to March 17, 2018. |
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board , says it is optimistic that the conduct of its 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME ), which begins on Friday, will be successful. The Head , Media and Information of the board , Dr Fabian Benjamin , expressed the optimism in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos . NAN reports that 1 . 6 million candidates , inclusive of 367 visually impaired candidates , are participating in the examination scheduled to end on March 17 . According to Benjamin , the board has put logistics in place to ensure the conduct of one of the best examinations in recent times. “ If you come around to the board , you will find out that the atmosphere is relaxed . “ We are fully ready and on top of the game , just as we expect a hitch - free conduct of the examination nationwide . “ Today , we will start with just one session , which has been the tradition every year . “ From tomorrow (Saturday ) , we shall have the full three sessions for the candidates as stated in their examination slips. “ Our advice , therefore , is for the candidates to ensure that they adhere strictly to all the rules guiding the examination . “ There is no shortcut to success. Our helplines are always open to candidates with issues . “ They should feel free to talk to us rather than resort to self -help or engage the services of fraudsters , who might want to take advantage of them , ’’ he said . An official at one of the examination centres , Dalewares Institute of Technology in Lagos , Mr David Babalola, told NAN that the centre was prepared for the test . He said some candidates slated for the examination on Friday had been around the centre as early as 8 . 00 a . m . Source:Punch Newspaper |

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announces the extension of registration for 2018 UTME till midnight of Sunday, 11th February, 2018. JAMB as a responsive organisation has taken the decision albeit with great hesitation to accommodate candidates who failed to register between the two months window period that ended at midnight of Tuesday, 6th February, 2018. The failure of these candidates to register is unfortunate and the Board hastens to add that this culture of impunity will not be tolerated henceforth. Indeed penalty will be imposed for late registration from next session. UTME candidates are therefore strongly advised to take advantage of the extension to register as request for further extension would not be entertained. Registration for Direct Entry candidates however continues. For emphasis, 2018 UTME registration now closes at midnight of Sunday, 11th February, 2018 |
WhatsApp is about to stop working on a range of old smartphones, meaning owners will have to buy newer gadgets if they want to continue using the chat app to the best of its capabilities . On New Year ’ s Day , WhatsApp will ‘ remove support ’ for a number of devices – which updated versions of the software can no longer be installed on them . This means owners of these clapped out gizmos won ’ t be able to enjoy new features or plugs for security holes which are often introduced in updates . From January 1 , 2018, anyone still using phones which run *BlackBerry OS , BlackBerry 10 or Windows Phone 8 . 0* will no longer be able to update their WhatsApp software. In a blog post, WhatsApp wrote: “ While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don’ t offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app ’ s features in the future . “ This was a tough decision for us to make, but the right one in order to give people better ways to keep in touch with friends, family , and loved ones using WhatsApp . “ If you use one of these affected mobile devices , we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone , or Windows Phone . ” Last year , WhatsApp dropped its support for Nokia Symbian S60 phones . It will do the same for Nokia S40 handsets on December 31 2018 and then devices running Android 2 . 3 . 7 and older after 1 February , 2020 . |
AMID condemnation of airing of the presidential documentary entitled, “Human Side of President Buhari” at a time Nigerians are passing through agony caused by fuel scarcity, the Presidency yesterday described the documentary as a spice for the holiday. It also revealed that some petroleum marketers have approached government for an increment in the pump price, a request government turned down. The Media and Publicity Department of the State House had on Saturday in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said a 55-minute documentary on President Muhammadu Buhari had been put together. Adesina explained that the documentary portrayed the President in a light that majority of Nigerians had not seen him. He said: “It is made up of interviews from close aides of the President and some others who have worked closely with him, carefully put together to show a side of the President that many would love to see. “This documentary will air on the Network Service of the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, on Sunday, December 24 and Tuesday December 26, 2017. It will also air on Channels Television on Monday, December 25, 2017 (Christmas Day) between 8 and 9pm on the days and stations mentioned.” But this has attracted criticism from some quarters against the government, especially as the President was yet to comment on the persisting fuel scarcity. Reacting to the criticism, Adesina in a statement said: “I have read a lot of reactions, particularly online, on the timing of the airing of the documentary on President Muhammadu Buhari, slated for December 24 and 25, 2017, respectively, by 8pm on NTA and Channels Television. “Some of the comments are borne out of genuine concern, which we appreciate, while others are virulent, coming from inveterate complainers.” “Fault finding is the stock-in-trade of such people, and if they mistakenly find themselves in Heaven, they would even complain against God. They have no other pastime. “The reactions mainly dwell on the fact that a documentary showing the human side of the President (as against the well known iron and steel) is coming at a time there is severe fuel scarcity in the country. And I say, why not? Is life all about doom and gloom? Must we sit in ashes and wear sackcloth perpetually, and ignore the brighter side of life? God forbid! “The current fuel crisis is a combination of snafu (Situation Normal All Fouled Up) in the distribution process of petrol (which the NNPC admitted at the onset of the problem), and deliberate mischief and sabotage by some marketers who want to force the hands of government to increase the pump price. “Then, the situation is further compounded by hoarding of products, and panic buying. And government is working round the clock to restore normalcy, which will come in a matter of time. “Should we then be perpetually like King Lear at his worst, and consign ourselves to the doldrums occasioned by fuel scarcity at a festive period? No. Despite the temporal pains, life must continue, and we must look at the cheery side, while government works hard to bring succour. “That is why I disagree with armchair critics, who wail at the drop of a hat. Millions of Nigerians appreciate President Buhari, love him passionately, and would watch the airing of the documentary, which shows the President in a perspective not very well known before. “It’s a spice for the holiday season, and not even ephemeral fuel crisis would dampen the enthusiasm of positive minded Nigerians.” Source: Vanguard Newspaper |
