UK senior commanders and Whitehall officials are on "high alert" and monitoring the situation "with growing concern", a source told the Mirror.


Moscow has amassed close to 100,000 troops at the flashpoint border and senior Ukraine military sources fear its war-planners may have wrong-footed them.

Putin’s navy on Thursday piled on further pressure on embattled Kiev by announcing the deployment of a war-fighting fleet towards Ukraine arriving within days.

A source said: “Aggressive Russian troop movements towards the border have caused a great deal of concern within the Ministry of Defence.

“The situation is being monitored constantly. I would definitely describe this as a growing crisis.”

It is feared that within days more than 95,000 assault troops, backed by tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and even thermobaric rocket batteries will be ready to invade.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops – including reservists- have been called up to the border and US advisers are believed to be “in country,” according to sources.

American intelligence assessments grade the threat of a major Russia-Ukraine flare-up as “potential imminent crisis” as stated by their European operations centre EUCOM.

War has raged along the 1,500 miles-long East Ukraine-Russia border since 2014 after the Euromaidan riots in Kiev and the overnight and lightning Russian invasion of neighbouring Crimea.
In brutal fighting, which has often returned to a trench warfare stand-off around 14,000 people are estimated to have been killed.

The brutal frontline stand-off has been worsened for Ukraine in the east by pro-Russian rebels, aided by Moscow’s GRU military intelligence spies.

More than ten heavily-armed Russian warships are now steaming towards the Caspian Sea from the Black Sea, armed with artillery and other weapons to back Putin’s land forces.

Russia’s Defence Ministry announced it was moving more than ten navy vessels, including landing boats and artillery warships to the Black Sea to take part in exercises.

But western nations and Ukraine have voiced alarm over the build-up as a five strong alliance or “QUINT” of the UK, US, Canada, Lithuania and Poland allies backed Ukraine.

UK defence Secretary Ben Wallace was among the Quint which issued a statement warning Russia: “The Quint Defence Ministers are united in our unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of increased Russian military activity.

“We will work closely with Ukraine to monitor the situation and continue to call on Russia to de-escalate.”

The Russian Ministry of Defence said in a statement: “As part of the winter training check, more than 10 amphibious and artillery boats and vessels of the southern military district are conducting an inter-fleet move from the Caspian Sea to the Black Sea.”

Lawrence Livermore Researchers Testing Out Nuclear Blast Defense Against Earth-Threatening Asteroids

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) — It sounds like a scene from a Hollywood sci-fi thriller, but researchers from Lawrence Livermore National lab have joined with an Air Force team of technologists to test if a nuclear blast could be used to deflect an earth-threatening asteroid.

Whether it be Bruce Willis and his crew of oil drillers taking on an asteroid as it approaches earth in ‘Armageddon’ or Tia Leoni and her father awaiting a massive tidal wave from an asteroid strike in ‘Deep Impact,’ Hollywood has been fascinated by the threat from space.

Lansing Horan IV, a member of the team, said the research was focused on the neutron radiation from a nuclear detonation since neutrons can be more penetrative than X-rays.

“This means that a neutron yield can potentially heat greater amounts of asteroid surface material, and therefore be more effective for deflecting asteroids than an X-ray yield,” he said.

Horan said there are two basic options in defeating an asteroid: disruption or deflection.

Disruption is the approach of imparting so much energy to the asteroid that it is robustly shattered into many fragments moving at extreme speeds.

“Past work found that more than 99.5 percent of the original asteroid’s mass would miss the Earth,” he said. “This disruption path would likely be considered if the warning time before an asteroid impact is short and/or the asteroid is relatively small.”

Deflection is the gentler approach that involves imparting a smaller amount of energy to the asteroid, keeping the object intact, and pushing it onto a slightly different orbit with a slightly changed speed.

“Over time, with many years prior to impact, even a minuscule velocity change could add up to an Earth-missing distance,” Horan said. “Deflection might generally be preferred as the safer and more ‘elegant’ option, if we have sufficient warning time to enact this sort of response. This is why our work focused on deflection.”

Horan said the work was one small step forward for nuclear deflection simulations.


“One ultimate goal would be to determine the optimal neutron energy spectrum, the spread of neutron energy outputs that deposit their energies in the most ideal way to maximize the resulting velocity change or deflection,” he said.

Horan said the research showed that precision and accuracy in the energy deposition data is important.

“If the energy deposition input is incorrect, we should not have much confidence in the asteroid deflection output,” he said. “We now know that the energy deposition profile is most important for large yields that would be used to deflect large asteroids.”

He said if there were to be a plan to mitigate a large incoming asteroid, the energy deposition spatial profile should be accounted for to correctly model the expected asteroid velocity change.

“On the other hand, the energy coupling efficiency is always important to consider, even for low yields against small asteroids,” he said. “We found that the energy deposition magnitude is the factor that most strongly predicts the overall asteroid deflection, influencing the final velocity change more than the spatial distribution does.”

For planning an asteroid mitigation mission, it will be necessary to account for these energy parameters in order to have correct simulations and expectations.

“It is important that we further research and understand all asteroid mitigation technologies in order to maximize the tools in our toolkit,” Horan said. “In certain scenarios, using a nuclear device to deflect an asteroid would come with several advantages over non-nuclear alternatives. In fact, if the warning time is short and/or the incident asteroid is large, a nuclear explosive might be our only practical option for deflection and/or disruption.”

Russia and Ukraine on brink of war 'signals coming of Messiah' in 400-year-old prophecy


A famous rabbi made an eerie prediction in the 18th century that seems to mirror the rising tensions and military build-up between the two Eastern European nations.

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine are heating up, sparking fears of an imminent war — and a prominent rabbi claims it's a sign that the coming of the Messiah is near.

Conflict between the two nations has been brewing for the past seven years, ever since Russia annexed Crimea in the wake of the Ukrainian revolution.

On March 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree essentially declaring war with Russia, calling for the "de-occupation and reintegration of the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol".

Since the decree was issued, there has been a significant military buildup on both sides, with Ukrainian tanks spotted rolling into the Luhansk and Donetsk region.

Meanwhile NATO has been shadowing an unusually large number of Russian military aircraft flying over the North Atlantic, North Sea, Black Sea, and Baltic Sea.

Last week US President Joe Biden made his first phone call to President Zelensky and pledged to stand by Ukraine in the face of Russian "aggression", while the US European Command raised its alert status to the highest level.

Russia responded by warning NATO against deploying troops to Ukraine, saying such a move would escalate tensions near its borders and the Kremlin would have no choice but to respond with force.

The worrying escalation in military tension has been cited by religious scholars as the fulfilment of an apocalyptic prophecy made in the 1700s.

Rabbi Elijah of Vilna, also known as the Vilna Gaon, was an 18th-century Jewish academic who made many significant contributions to understanding the Messianic process.

While Christians believe Jesus Christ was the Messiah and will return to Earth in the Second Coming, Jews believe the Messiah has yet to visit us and are awaiting his First Coming.

The Vilna Gaon handed down a prophecy to his son that said: "When you hear that the Russians have captured the city of Crimea, you should know that the times of the Messiah have started, that his steps are being heard.

"And when you hear that the Russians have reached the city of Constantinople [Istanbul], you should put on your Shabbat clothes and don't take them off, because it means that the Messiah is about to come any minute."

The prophecy was brought to light a few years ago by the Vilna Gaon's great-grandson.

Rabbi Pinchas Winston, an author who specialises in theories about the end of days, says the situation in Eastern Europe does seem to parallel the War of Gog and Magog, believed to be the precursor to the Messiah.

"It is known that the Gog and Magog will come from the north," Rabbi Winston said.

The Hebrew word for 'north' also implies 'hidden'."

He also noted that war between Turkey and Russia was predicted to happen before Gog and Magog.


"The two nations have faced off before," he explained.

"Each time is like the building of a tower of explosives. It may seem like small events set off major conflicts but in every case, the conditions were all in place, waiting for a spark to set them off."

Rabbi Winston claims the common denominator in major multinational wars is "excessive liberalism", after a period of which conflict is bound to break out.

"A little liberalism is a good, even necessary thing," he said.

"The world can only run properly when people, especially leaders, acknowledge that God runs the world. People and governments need to take responsibility for their own actions in a global framework.

"When people become socially irresponsible, as liberalism has certainly become, a conflict becomes unavoidable."

He says the Bible illustrates this, with Eve being "the first liberal" who "threw off the yoke of heaven" and acted in her own self-interest.

"The snake is like the Putins and Hitlers of the world who think only of themselves and how they can benefit at the expense of others," he added.

Tehran and Hezbollah’s military build-up in Syria remains a red line for Israel, and the IDF has carried out thousands of strikes to thwart the Iranian entrenchment.


The Israeli Air Force (IAF) attacked targets in the outskirts of Damascus on Wednesday, during which four Syrian soldiers were injured, Syria’s state media reported.

SANA news reported that the IAF carried out the attack from Lebanese airspace and claimed that several of the missiles were intercepted by the Syrian Army’s air defenses.

However, the attack injured four soldiers and caused material damage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said explosions reverberated in Damascus and its environs, reporting that three Iran-backed paramilitary fighters were killed in the strike.

Israeli residents of Metula, the most northern town in the country heard explosions and were notified that the noise was the result of the firing of anti-aircraft systems from the Lebanese area. The missile fell in the village of Hulah in southern Lebanon, very close to the Israeli border.

The last time Syria reported on an Israeli attack was on March 17. The IAF reportedly attacked several targets, causing material damage. The SOHR reported that the attack was aimed at two ammunition depots belonging to pro-Iranian militias at sites near Damascus airport.

Iran has been exerting efforts to arm its proxies and militias in Syria and in Lebanon, and chiefly the Hezbollah terror organization. Using transports on land through Iraq, flights to Damascus and arms shipments by sea, the IRGC has been working to build a strategic threat against Israel on its northern borders.

Iran and Hezbollah’s military build-up in Syria remains a red line for Israel. The Israeli Air Force has carried out thousands of attacks to thwart the Iranian entrenchment in the war-torn country.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly declared that they will not tolerate an Iranian threat on its northern border with Syria and will take all necessary measures to ensure that such a menace does not emerge.

A top scientist said contacting alien life is a 'terrible idea', and his words have been interpreted as a warning of inviting other species to 'rule Earth'.

It comes as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is set to launch later this year and it will peek into worlds at the far reaches of the universe, reports The Next Web.

Currently, the Hubble Space Telescope is Earth's most famous piece of space seeing technology but the JWST will go much, much further.

Such is the power of NASA's new telescope that some scientists fear it could disturb alien species that are unaware of our existence and maybe they will not all be friendly.

String theorist Michio Kaku told the Observer that the new telescope will allow people to look at thousands of planets but we should think carefully about reaching out to their inhabitants.

Michio Kaku said: "Soon we’ll have the Webb telescope up in orbit and we’ll have thousands of planets to look at, and that’s why I think the chances are quite high that we may make contact with an alien civilisation.

"There are some colleagues of mine that believe we should reach out to them. I think that’s a terrible idea. We all know what happened to Montezuma when he met Cortés in Mexico so many hundreds of years ago.
