Russia warns NATO to BACK DOWN after Putin masses 4,000 troops on Ukraine border sparking war fears

RUSSIA has today warned it will ”take extra measures” if NATO sends forces to help Ukraine, amid renewed fears over the region’s long-simmering conflict.


It comes after Vladimir Putin deployed up to 4,000 soldiers along with tanks and other armoured vehicles to the disputed border with its neighbour.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov today said Russia would take the additional measures, after claims such a move by NATO would escalate tensions near its borders.

Peskov told reporters: “No doubt such a scenario would lead to a further increase in tensions close to Russia's borders.”

“Of course, this would call for additional measures from the Russian side to ensure its security.”

He insisted, however, that Russia was “not threatening” Ukraine, despite an earlier statement which warned a war in Donbass would “destroy” its neighbour.

A NATO official told Reuters that Russia was undermining efforts to reduce tensions in eastern Ukraine, and NATO ambassadors had met on Thursday to discuss the situation.

The official said: “Allies share their concerns about Russia's recent large-scale military activities in and around Ukraine.”

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky joined the criticism, saying "military exercises and possible provocations along the border are traditional Russian games".

Meanwhile, Mr Peskov accused Ukrainian forces of staging "provocations" on the frontline in eastern Ukraine, where a fragile ceasefire is violated daily.

The U.S. pledged its "unwavering" support to Ukraine on Thursday, with defense officials acknowledging the thousands of troops newly-deployed to the separatist Donbass territory, which is controlled by pro-Moscow factions.

US military officials have held phonecalls with both sides as they attempt to de-escalate the knifedge situation.

The Pentagon reportedly elevated the alert level of US troops in Europe to its highest status, saying "we're watching the situation very carefully".

Kiev's intelligence services have warned Russia may attempt an armed incursion into Ukraine, reports news agency UNIAN.

Tanks, military trucks and howitzers can all be seen allegedly being shipped to the border in unverified videos on social media.

Open war between Russia and the Ukraine would force the West into an impossible situation.

Britain, the US and other nations may either have to go up against Putin -with his massive military and nuclear arsenal - or abandon their allies in Kiev.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russian for "muscle-flexing" and said they were ready for any confrontation.

"Our army is not just strength and power; it is also wisdom and balance. Our state is unity. We are always ready for any provocations," he said.

NATO planes were scrambled 10 times in a six-hour period on Monday in response to an "unusual peak" of Russian flights in several areas, the Western military alliance said on Tuesday.

They intercepted planes near alliance airspace in the North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic and Black Sea, Nato said.

There was no immediate response from Russia, which recently accused Nato of following a path of confrontation.

Nato's secretary general has urged Moscow to resume dialogue.

Jens Stoltenberg's call last week was backed up by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a visit to the alliance's headquarters in Brussels, when he proposed a "relationship with Russia that is at least predictable and stable".

According to Nato, while the Russian military aircraft never entered its member states' airspace they did not transmit transponder codes so posed a potential risk to civilian flights. The alliance said the interceptions involved six groups of Russian planes:

•Norwegian F-16s scrambled as two Tu-95 Bears neared the Norwegian coast

•The Russian planes then flew south over the North Sea prompting action from UK and Belgian air force planes

•Two Tu-160 Blackjack bombers were later intercepted by the Norwegian Air Force.

•Allied planes also tracked three Russian planes over the Black Sea

•A Russian maritime patrol plane was intercepted by Italian planes over the Baltic Sea near Kaliningrad.

Relations between Moscow and Nato deteriorated in 2014 when Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine and Russian-backed rebels took over areas of eastern Ukraine.

They have been further strained by a dispute over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Germany which is opposed by the US. Mr Blinken has warned that any companies involved in the project risk US sanctions.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called last week for Russia to resume dialogue in the form of the Nato-Russia Council, which has not met since 2019. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Nato was unable to get rid of the habit of seeing Russia as a "threat from the East".

Meanwhile, a 2020 ceasefire in Ukraine, which is not a member of Nato, has come under strain with both sides blaming each other for the rise in violence. Ukraine's commander in chief, Ruslan Khomchak, has accused Russia of waging an "aggressive policy" and sending Russian troops close to Ukrainian borders.

China is readying itself for American and Japanese involvement in any Taiwan Strait conflict, with recent warplane exercises around the island aimed at displaying its ability to isolate Taiwan from potential support, according to analysts in Beijing and Taipei.

After 10 People's Liberation Army aircraft, including fighter jets and reconnaissance planes, flew sorties into Taiwan's air defense identification zone on Monday, a senior defense official in Taipei noted the "offensive posture" of the military exercise. Deputy Defense Minister Chang Che-ping described the waves of Chinese aircraft as part of a naval and air force "joint operation."

The gesture by Beijing was notable for its pincer-like flight pattern around Taiwan after the Japanese defense ministry reported two additional PLA warplanes crossing the East China Sea and Miyako Strait between the Japanese-controlled islands. One of the aircraft then headed southwest before turning north to fly parallel to Taiwan's eastern coastline.

Flight patterns from the exercise appeared to show Taiwan surrounded on three sides, and the drill was a pointed message to the governments of Taiwan, Japan and the U.S., analysts said.

The Chinese military was "continuing to increase its combat preparedness by making its routine exercises more complex and realistic and taking possible U.S. and Japanese interventions into consideration," Communist Party newspaper Global Times reported on Tuesday.

The additional sorties in the east showed the PLA was able to strike targets in eastern Taiwan, "but also lock down the island entirely from possible interventions by U.S. and Japanese forces," according to the report from Beijing.

Recent Chinese warplane incursions into Taiwan's defensive airspace amounted to "political signaling" by Beijing, said senior security analyst Su Tzu-yun, who is with Taiwan's Institute for National Defense and Security Research.

Monday's noteworthy exercise coincided with the visit to Taipei by a U.S. diplomat. Beijing had also "expressed its fury" by sending 20 warplanes toward Taiwan after the signing of a U.S.-Taiwan coast guard pact last Friday, Su told Newsweek.

He said that the military significance of Monday's pincer movement, which involved PLA anti-ship and anti-submarine aircraft, was "the PLA's way of showing it has the capability to isolate Taiwan if the U.S. and Japan plan to assist" Taipei during a Taiwan Strait contingency.
