In 2003 he was a governorship aspirant under PDP but left before the primaries becos he didn't trust the process, he went to APGA and he was given the ticket. He contested the election with Ngige of PDP and he won them squarely but PDP led fed govt with the help of the Uba brothers rigged the election. He went to court and in 2006, his mandate was restored.

In 2010, he contested for 2nd term and this time with Ngige of ACN, and former CBN gov and current Anambra gov Soludo of PDP and he defeated the both of them on the first ballot. Soludo came third after Ngige in that election
