You know what the guy meant, 2006-2011 = SINCE 2006. There is only a one year gap between Arsenal's last trophy and Liverpool's yet even at this time last year(when Liverpool's current drought was the same with Arsenal's then) Arsenal were getting 10 times more bashing despite the fact Arsenal's trophy drought is clearly caused by the stadium move while Liverpool just self-destructed.

Admit it, Arsenal are public enemy no 1.

Hell boy I am disappointed - Chamakh was introduced and created at least two clear cut chances and the game did change. Against any other GK, Chamakh would've scored twice and RVP at least once y'day. Rozzi came on and had a sitter - obviously the change led to an improvement in play, but we couldn't finish things off.
You are saying the same thing i said. . . Why wait till we're 2-0 down before switching to 4-4-2?

Has Debosky been infected with dK syndrome? cheesy

There was nothing 'gung-ho' about playing Denilson, Wilshere and Diaby in midfield. . . .we had every reason to go at Utd with purpose, our defenders simply screwed up on the day.
Inter generally parked the bus in last season's CL yet they had Milito, Eto'o, Pandev, and Sneijder starting. A team's approach to a game has less to do with personnel than most people think.

Our defenders are always bound to screw up!!!

Arshavin has a roaming role and is not restricted to the wing - this idea that he is stuck wide is one of the most repeated fallacies on this thread. He did come centrally a number of times but was still ineffective, primarily because Utd crammed the middle of their defence/midfield.
Arshavin's roaming role is an even bigger fallacy!! All wide players come in-field every now and again, even Aaron Lennon!

A player with Arshavin's mentality and work-rate should never be played wide in a game of that magnitude, certainly not when your left-back is Gibbs and your covering midfielder is Denilson.

To think a different 'formation' would've beaten Utd is crass oversimplification.
A different formation/gameplan COULD have beaten United. . . The one deployed has PROVEN to fail a million times.

We created more than enough chances to win that game - a change in formation will not stop Rozzi from missing a sitter from 4 yards, or Nasri wasting time dribbling out wide instead of passing early to Arshavin who was free in midfield able to take a shot. Change in formation wouldn't have prevented VDS' superb save that stopped us from going 1-1.
United also had chances they didn't take. . . On a badder day it could have been 3 or 4. A change in strategy might not prevent missed chances but it would've prevented leaking glorious counter-attacking chances to the opposition(which they scored from).

If Ibime has ever made sense in his life tongue it's when he said this: "one chance created with few bodies in the box(i.e on the break) is better than 10 chances created in an overloaded box", or something like, Google it! grin grin

We haven't beat Utd at OT for a long time, and this is way before we started playing 4-3-3 (or whatever Wenger's variant is).
Like i said, the last time we beat United we weren't playing this formation. Even when we lost to them it wasn't as annoyingly predictable as it is now.

Utd simply possess a mental edge and a ruthlessness that we currently don't have.
I dont really believe in that "mental edge" thing. . . In fact Wenger has made me detest the words "mental" and "strength". cheesy

Now the ruthlessness, that comes with being tactically efficient. Not playing the same old 4-2-3-1, carving a glorious opening, only for you to get to the byline and discover there is absolutely no one in the box to pass to! shocked shocked shocked grin grin grin

^^Ibime doing his best Switch47 rendition! cheesy

Ol boy only a JJC would not know that Wenger is one of the most tactically inept big name coaches out there! He might be an excellent manager of resources but his technical intelligence is questionable at best! Its one thing to talk greasy to the press and its another thing to motivate your boys on the pitch. Plus lets face it his refusal to plug the gaps in vital areas have come back to bite him
I remember recommending Scott Parker on this thread some years ago after Flamini/Gilberto/Diarra all left. . . Note: This was before he had the MOTM award named after him!

Fast-forward 3 years and Wenger STILL hasn't signed a proper holding midfielder!!! We can curse Denilson all day but the fact is he isn't a DMF.

Now i know money is tight and all, but the truth is Wenger could have spent 8-12m max to get a someone to adequately fill that massive void in the side, instead we are waiting for Frimpong/Couquelin to come good. I'm all for youth development but i don't see why that cant be complemented with ONE good signing in such a critical area. . . SMH!
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 12:57pm On Mar 13, 2011
I have argued on this forum several times that AW needs a plan B for some games. But Ive given up hoping for any
I believe Wenger does have a Plan B, i.e throwing on Chamakh and changing the shape of the team. But activating "Plan B" suggests things aren't going your way. . . Why wait for things to go pear shaped before you make changes, especially when experience has taught you Plan A doesn't work? Why must Arsenal go gung-ho away to Man Utd when everyone and their grandma KNOWS Utd will counter effectively? These are the questions Wenger should be asking himself.

Why must Arshavin play wide when he is clearly more effective centrally? This is how i think Arsenal should have lined up:

Nasri/Eboue    Diaby    Wilshere    Rosicky/Nasri

                           Arshavin

                              RVP

I believe the last time Arsenal beat Man Utd we played 4-4-2. Unfortunately Wenger is now fixated on 4-2-3-1 for whatever reason, when it clearly doesnt work against United.

It doesnt matter how good you are or how much "mental strength" you have, if you are not set up properly you will lose. This is purely Wenger's fault.

presido1:
Isn't the two highlighted contradictory? Unless you mean a better side compared to wolves and co. But then you can't compare united to wolves and co.
There is no contradiction, Arsenal had marginally better players on the field than United, against Wolves and co the gap is humongous.

Mugus like Ibime said United played their Carling Cup team, but SAF put out his first choice defence/attack, though he reshuffled the midfield. Let's not forget Arsenal were also missing Fabianski/Szczesny, Vermaelen, Clichy, Song, Cesc & Walcott, that's more than half the team that would normally be starting.

Yes Arsenal still put out a better side overall but there wasn't too much in it.

^^ Are you questioning the sanity and intelligence of Monsieur WenGAY?
Hehehe, you forget your home boy LvG is in the same 4-2-3-1 "total football" boat as Wenger. For a CC of a typical Arsenal v Man Utd match look no further than Bayern v Inter UCL final. Wenger/LvG do all the playing while SAF/JM do all the scoring.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 11:47am On Mar 13, 2011
Back then I said I pitied him and I still do. He has done a lot for the club but sadly, his stubborness in keeping players that he should have sold off long ago will tarnish his image. Unfortunately, the players he has risked his reputation on have not paid him back in kind.
I disagree. . . Arsenal had better players on the field than Man Utd, it's not the players.

The United team goes on to the field (no matter who is playing) with the intention of winning the game.

The Arsenal team goes with the intention of not losing. Great difference.

If it was Arsenal that had so many injuries and had to play with 7 defenders, we would have given up even before the game started with ready made excuses. We lose games to referees and injuries even before we kick the ball.
I don't believe they set out "not to lose", it's a cup tie and they wanted to win certainly. It's not psychological, at least not in that manner.

This is where Wenger has to take the blame for his tactical naivety, always playing into Fergie's hands, ALWAYS! This is unacceptable.

Wenger's immutable game plan may work against Wolves and co because of the sheer difference in quality, but against the better sides he gets found out more often than not.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 10:09am On Mar 13, 2011
It's amazing how Wenger can be the best manager but yet the worst coach on earth simultaneously.

Even with very limited finances he's still managed to build a team which pound for pound should rival any other in the country.

Yet Man Utd v Arsenal has become a broken record: United park their Batmobile, invite Arsenal to attack them, then pick them off on the break. SMH

How someone with a coaching badge falls for the same trap time after time boggles the mind.

When did Iniesta score vs Chelsea? 88 mins
Oh, so it's ok to start defending once it's 88 mins?

Mention one game where barca has been defensive. It exposes your idiocy to claim If barca played yada yada yada. Which team on earth has barca played and gone defensive? Or are we talking about the Martian 11 from outer space?
You must be the biggest foool on earth. . . Read what i wrote again then explain why you are asking me these idiotic questions.

Arsenal vs Villareal we saw a shameless catennaccio from the "attacking team" and exponent of beautiful football, Every Arsenal vs Barca game,

In 2006 vs Madrid Arsenal set up to play counter attacking football.
So Arsenal were defensive at the Emirates last month?

So if Arsenal have played conservatively a few times over the last 5 years, you overlook the 1 million other games they've played in that same period?

Since Arsenal are not an attacking team, can you name an attacking team in Europe besides Barca?

Using Dayokanu's/Krayola's retar.ded logic, Messi is a useless player because he was shackled by Inter last season.

Your school fees shoulda been put between a stripper's bum-cheeks. . .

How many teams in CL history have played 90mins with 0 shots at goal? Only the trophyless hopeless club from North london.
0 shots at goal and yet Arsenal were on course to go through up till the 70th minute. . . Bayern Mushin with 100 shots at goal were 4-0 down at half time at the same ground.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 6:32pm On Mar 09, 2011
You guys should please think with your BRAIN
They are brainless grin grin grin

Imagine this piece of rubbish Krayola typed earlier:

It's time to call out Arsenal on the nonsense attacking team they try to pretend to be.

We all heard both coaches claim they they would go out and attack and yada yada yo. Barca, kept pressing even when we had the result we needed. We were still committing players forward and going for goals because that is what we do. It costs us sometimes and I personally think it's silly to do that even after you get the result you need and the game is almost over. . . But that is the barca philosophy and we NEVER EVER play defensively. We might bring more defensive players on the field, but we never stop pushing forward and looking for goals.
Imagine the clown. . . He wants to single out one game to judge Arsenal's attacking capabilities and overlook all the others. . .

What happened after Iniesta equalized against Chelsea? I'm sure Barca were still "pushing forward and looking for goals", nonsense!

If Barcelona don't play defensively it's because they have the ABILITY to keep the ball better than any other team, NOT because of any rubbish PHILOSOPHY.

If tomorrow Barcelona meet a team with the ability to beat them at their own game(like Arsenal did with Barca), they'll do what they have to to be victorious, and if that means playing more defensively than normal, they'll do it.

Deluded lot! cheesy
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 2:54pm On Mar 09, 2011
you cannot talk about cesc gifting barcelona a goal when your only game in the match was an own goal from busquets. even after cesc lost the ball, barcelona still had so much work to do to get the ball into the net. messi's skill to chip the ball over the goalie and volley it home was exquisite.
Fair enough, Arsenal's goal was fortuitous as well, but that's not the point i was making. The point is for all Barcelona's possession and shot's their break came from an unforced error.

gone where? that was a stone-wall penalty. the referee missed it.
Messi wasn't in possession of the ball when Diaby touched him. I've seen them given but that was far from a "stone-wall" pen.

a player cannot have his hands on the face of another player. it's a red card offence.
Now you've shot urself in the foot. According to you Abidal should have been sent off for having his hand on another player's face. . . I still don't recall any Arsenal player ever having his hand on a Barca player's face.

it wasn't koscielny. it was van persie. kicking the ball after a goal has been scored is simply time-wasting.
How is it time wasting if your team are still celebrating? Would Barca kick-off with Arsenal players still celebrating in their own half? huh

the referee must have seen that or told by his officials or barcelona players.

Officials being swayed by players? Shocking. Maybe Rvp should have told the ref "Abidal just insulted your mother" to get him sent off grin grin

he had that on his mind when van persie(who knew he was offside) still attempted to take a shot. van persie's lack of emotions after that shot told me he heard the whistle. if a player of his quality misses from that position, he will be holding his head in his hands disappointingly but he showed no expression at all(cos he knew the whistle had gone).
Even if RvP heard the whistle that still doesnt warrant a second yellow. That's simply shocking refereeing.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 2:28pm On Mar 09, 2011
this is a bit pointless considering the fact arsenal's only goal was via busquets heading into his own net.
I'm sure you are familiar with the term "unforced error".

i can actually say the referee was biased against barcelona.

* he denied barcelona a penalty when messi was fouled in the first half.
* van persie should have been sent off when he slapped a barcelona player in the first half
* van persie should have received his second yellow when arsenal got the equalizer. he kicked the ball to row z immediately after the goal to waste time.
A. The ball was already gone before Diaby made contact with Messi, that's not a pen IMO.

B. You are having a laugh. Who did RvP slap? Hope you aint talking about Alves. If that's a red card then Abidal should have been given three red cards for putting his hand around RvP's throat.

C. I believe that was Koscielny. How does kicking the ball while your team ARE STILL CELEBRATING warrant a card? Teams are usually given 20 or so seconds to celebrate a goal, no?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only (A New Strength, A New Hope). by ritchboy(m): 1:50pm On Mar 09, 2011
The funny thing wiv Stats is that you can use it to prove just anything. People who claim that Arsenal didn't have any shot on target should state how many Barca had in a first half that was a defensive masterclass by Arsenal. Thing is, the game was going very well according to plan. We couldnt really counter- attack because the only outlet we have for this, Arshavin was left on the bench for Rosicky to complete the defensive web. It was a game of percentages, inspite of the limitation imposed on ou substitution by the keeper injury, one felt that  key changes will change the tide of play completely. Our goal gave us a perfect platform to win the game when we were not even attacking. If VP was on the pitch and Arshavin comes in for Rossa, believe me Arsenal would have licked Barca clean. For ten men to have the kind of chance that pinky boot spurned wiv three mins left is an indicator what this Team can do. If anything I'm taking postives from this game. Itz now proven, Arsenal can defend if they need to. The shape of the Team before the Red was excellent. Only a dunce will expect a Leading Team to go looking for 'shots on target' The onus was on them to break us down but they couldnt until the red. Say anything you want but I say, on the basis of what I saw over the two legs, this Barca Team CANNOT take the Champions league!. They showed all the frailties that I nie embarrassing for such a hyped Team. Had Arshavin been in that Bendtner position yesterday it wud av been nunc-dimitis. For A team with ten men against ball huggers, we did well!
This is the most brilliant post of the lot. . . I don't know what all the fuss is about shots on goal when Arsenal didn't need a goal in the first half.

When we did need a goal, we got it within EIGHT MINUTES of the second half.

For all Barca's shots on goal they needed a gift from Cesc to score their first and a gift from the ref to score the other 2.

Barcelona are bound to dominate any game especially early on, but Arsenal are bound to come to the party later on, usually around the final 15 minutes.

Even if Barca had still scored one or two goals  at 1-1 vs 11 men i'm pretty sure Wenger would've thrown on Arshavin for Rosicky during that final 15 minute spell and Arsenal would've scored at least one more goal.

Having said all that obviously the better team went through in the end. But if i got a penny for every time Arsenal have been the better team but didn't win i'd be the richest man on earth. . . oh wait a minute, I AM! cheesy

I woz telling my mate during the game that Kalou is Chelsea's best 4-4-2 striker. . .and he came on and changed the game in 10 mins. Its time to stop judging Kalou as a winger. He's a striker with some potential! A 4-4-2 striker must have skill, speed and movement to stretch the play wide, and still have the strength to play as the target man. Kalou is the only striker who has all these at Chelsea. Anelka has no strength at all, DD has no movement or dribbling skill, and Torres lacks strength and some pace. Also Kalou's goals-per-minute stats is comparable to DD and Anelka!

As for Fat Frank, what more can I say about the guy? I still remember the infamous "Lamps will play till 35" argument. He is almost 33 now and I haven't seen any midfielder who covers more ground. He did more defending than Essien today and got forward as usual. He play great passes, and he passes at a faster speed than most midfielders. I value CONSISTENCY over 90 mins and Lamps is Mr consistent. Myopic analysts who only rate players who look good in highlights will do well to watch a player like Lamps who doesn't grab "highlights", but produces on a consistent basis.
The thing is Lamps doesn't look good in highlights, over 90 minutes, or in the mirror grin grin
