Nigeria: 400 Boko Haram Insurgents Killed in Battle to Retake Bazza, Michika, Madagali

By Kingsley Omonobi and Umar Yusuf

Heavy fighting between Nigerian troops and Boko Haram terrorists ensued yesterday in Adamawa State as soldiers backed from the air by Nigerian Airforce attack helicopters launched an attack to retake territories in the possession of Boko Haram.

In the ensuing battle that continued into the night, Vanguard gathered that about 400 Boko Haram terrorist had been killed while there were casualties on the part of the Nigerian soldiers.

Military sources in Adamawa state told Vanguard that the onslaught to retake the towns of Bazza, Michika and Madagali was launched from the town of Vimtim, the hometown of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh and that the General Officer Commanding 3 division of the Army, Major General Mohammed Zaruwa was coordinating the onslaught

Said the source, "I can assure you that we are advancing successfully. We have dealt a heavy blow on the terrorists. They didn't expect what they are seeing. Our armoured tanks are blasting and they are running for their lives. The airforce is providing air cover and hitting them also.

"I cannot give you a categorical answer regarding casualties but so far about 400 of the terrorists have been killed. We have casualties among our soldiers also but the propaganda circulating that 70 of our men were killed is wishful thinking".

"From reports on the ongoing battle, we may have lost a few soldiers but it cannot be confirmed because usually, they may have been injured and are holed up somewhere for first aid treatment" the source said.

Contacted on the development, Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade confirmed the fighting but stated he cannot give casualty figures or full details as operatives on ground were yet to furnish him with the situation report. He said he would give details when the operation is concluded.

Online media reports had indicated that during the fight at least 70 soldiers were killed in a fierce battle between insurgents and Nigerian troops and pointed out that the fighting was for control of the towns of Bazza and Vimtim in Adamawa State, a claim denied by the military source.

The source further debunked claims that Boko Haram used helicopters to fight back noting that the Nigerian airforce helicopters may have been mistaken for that.

An eye witness told newsmen that the insurgents at a point on Sunday might re-grouped at the Federal Government College, (Technical) in Michika before they were dislodged and chased away.

According to him, "the army came in on Sallah day and since then fierce fighting has been on. But, as you can see the insurgents are moving away and the military are following them".

"The insurgents who were in their thousands came through Uba and attacked the Nigeria troops. "The gallant Nigerians soldiers were attacked from the rear by the militants but the military men engaged them in fierce battle over five hours ".

It will be recalled that on the 7th of September, 2014 the Boko Haram insurgents overran Michika, Bazza, Madagali and other border towns between Adamawa and Borno State during which the son of the former Nigeria President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a Lieutenant Colonel, Olugbenga Obasanjo an Engineer in the Nigeria Army was shot and wounded.

During the takeover of Madagali and Michika, the insurgents also attempted to overran Vimtim, the hometown of the Chief of Defence staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh.

"Nigeria's military has dismissed claims that a man beheaded by Boko Haram fighters in the group's latest video was an air force pilot in a fighter jet that went missing three weeks ago.

Spokesman Air Commodore Dele Alonge, asked whether the man was an air force pilot, said: 'The man shown in the Boko Haram video is not our officer.

'The picture of a man beheaded in the video is superimposed,' he said.

'Our plane is still missing and we are looking for it. Boko Haram is just making unfounded claims."

MikeZA: I told Nigerians a week back.

"Shekau" is pop up again to embarrass your military.

Now he has released another video, claiming "alive and active"?
THE PURPORTED SHEKAU VIDEO IN CIRCULATION

The Defence Headquarters is studying the claims made in the video purportedly released by the terrorists showing their leader Abubakar Shekau as dismissing his death. From immediate observation and what some online news outlets claimed to have seen, the video did not indicate when it was shot neither did it show any proof of life or currency such as screen time or date. The video also did not make any reference to anything that has happened since the impostor’s reported death.

It is also noteworthy that the air plane said to be mentioned in the video had been missing before he was killed. It should not surprise anybody if the terrorists decide to manipulate pictures, clone another Shekau or upload a pre-recorded video all in a bid to prove invincible.

As far as we are concerned, the individual who was appearing in video and claiming to be the leader of the terrorist group was killed in the Kondunga battle in September. The resemblance of the corpse and that of the eccentric character was incontrovertible. His identity was equally corroborated by people who knew him before we announced his death.

So, while waiting to see the new video before any further statement, our message to them is that justice will be served to whoever bears that name or designation and whoever engages in act

Nigerian Army Captures Boko Haram ICT Expert

Nigerian Army Captures Boko Haram ICT Expert

According to reports, the Nigerian military has arrested a foreign computer expert who is said to be behind the several video shots sent to online media organization and foreign media houses.

The arrested was said to have been seen with some sophisticated equipment and copies of some of the videos the terrorists had sent to online media houses on their escapades including that of the abducted Chibok girls,

We learnt from the military sources that the computer analyst who is currently being interrogated was responsible for configuring computer images website and internet accesses that enables the group fight media and psychological operations.

The Sources said he was arrested after a shootout when a group of the sect members mobilized and attacked Konduga with a view to recovering the body of the impostor for burial in a site they would later earmark as their shrine.

Vanguard further gathered that the foreigner has made shocking confessional statements about the terrorist’s plans and modus operandi as well as their backers that would aid the troop’s fast track the routing of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We have made a very big break through; the computer analyst is opening up and has made very big revelations on the modus operandi of the sect”.

“We also discovered that the ICT expert is the back bone of the signals and communication links of late impersonator, Mohammed Bashir who always poses as Abubakar Shekau, whenever he is talking on “U” tube”.

With the breakthrough, the military is said to be better informed on how the Impostor of Shekau was able to reach out to the world and claim victory over Nigerian troops after several attacks.

While confirming that there is a successor crisis in the camp of the terrorists resulting from the death of most of their commanders by troops in Konduga, Vanguard learnt that some terrorists are yet to be disarmed because they were yet to come to terms that their erstwhile leader, Shakau has been killed.

Watch Boko Haram's counter, I just hope the borders are close enough for the Nigerian Army to flee to.
Grow up. Operations are continuing as we speak and BH are on the run. Don't let your bitterness cloud your judgement.

DieVluit: Where is the US battling terrorism again? Where exactly? And which of those countries are battling ragtag armies in their territory? Deal with it my friend, the whole thing is an indictment on Nigeria.
Why don't you google China and Russia in relation to terrorism and you will find out. They are also battling Muslim extremists. Why are the Americans and their allies running from Afghanistan after fleeing Iraq in the past?

Look at the state of the countries America and their Allies have been involved in or supported overthrowing the regimes; Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria.

What about all the other insurgencies in Peru, Colombia etc., didn't they have internal conflicts?

Abeg, make I hear jare.

FighterPilot: THESE NEWS REPORTS ALWAYS SMELL OF A RAT. WHY IS IT THAT WHEN BOKO HARAM AMBUSH SOLDIERS, THE NUMBER OF CASUALTIES ALWAYS TURNED TO BE DOWNPLAYED, BUT WHEN SOLDIERS AMBUSH THE INSUGENTS THEN THE NUMBERS ALWAYS ARE BALLOONED?

DO WE SAY THAT INSURGENTS ARE THAT INCAPABLE THAT EVEN WHEN THEY CAUGHT SOLDIERS FLAT FOOTED ONLY PICK THE FEW. PROPAGANDA NEVER WINS THE WAR. THE TRUTH WAS REVEALED WHEN SOLDIERS MUTINIED AGAINST OWN COMMANDER AFTER THEY LOST COMRADES WHICH YET AGAIN THE ARMY DOWNPLAYED. I REALLY DO NOT BELIEVE WHATEVER NONSENSE THAT COMES OUT OF NIGERIA'S MILITARY.
You smell a rat when you don't like the news eh? hehehe.

If you think it is a lie, go to liveleak.com and search for bokoharam. You will see BH bodies littered on the ground in Konduga after the first attack a few days ago, then come and speak to me again.

By the way, the story goes that the Air Force reported the Alpha Jet missing recently to lure BH into a false sense of security, then wham! If true, great piece of Psych Ops.

AND BTW, YOU HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FOOLED BY BH PROPAGANDA MACHINE, OLODO.

Bama Attack: UPP Commends Military

Paul Uwadima
— Sep 8, 2014 | 3 Comments

The United Progressive Party (UPP) has paid glowing tributes to officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces for repelling Boko Haram attack on Bama, the second largest town in Borno State.

The party which made the commendation in a statement by the national publicity secretary, Chief Ogbuehi Dike praised “our gallant soldiers and urge them to recover Gwoza and all areas occupied by the insurgents. It is obvious that Nigerian Army is the best and strongest in Africa and capable of protecting the territorial integrity of the nation”.

It commended the federal government for boosting the morale of the armed forces with new military weaponry and war planes to crush the insurgents that have terrorised the people of the North East in particular and the nation in general.

The statement reads in part, “We further enjoin the government and military authorities to boost the morale of our indefatigable soldiers by addressing their welfare as they fight and protect their fatherland.

“The rescue of over 200 school girls Boko Haram abducted at Chibok, Borno State should be uppermost in the minds of our gallant soldiers. Our hearts go out daily to the innocent schoolgirls held captive for over 140 days.

Boko Haram loses 38 men in shootout with Nigerian troops print
Published on January 10, 2014 by

Nigeria’s military said they had killed as many as 38 Boko Haram fighters during counter-insurgency operations in Damboa, in the country’s northeast.

Army spokesman Colonel Muhammad Dole said Thursday that troops on patrol foiled a planned attack on local residents and a military camp in the town in Borno state, in the early hours, and inflicted “heavy casualties”.

“While the encounter lasted, 38 Boko Haram terrorists were killed and some fled with various degrees of injuries,” the officer said in an e-mailed statement, adding that three vehicles were destroyed.

One of the vehicles was found to have cylinders and improvised explosive devices. Weapons and ammunition, including machine guns, were also recovered, he said.

One soldier was killed and two others were injured in the encounter, he said.

“Combined ground troops and Nigerian Air Force aircraft are tactically pursuing the fleeing terrorists in the ongoing operation in the general area of Damboa and surrounding villages,” Dole added.

Damboa is nearly 90 kilometres (55 miles) southwest of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

Boko Haram has been fighting a bloody insurgency in Nigeria’s north since 2009, attacking schools which follow a “Western” curriculum and churches as well as military and police targets.

Nigeria’s government in May last year imposed a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, in an attempt to stem the violence, which has claimed thousands of lives.

The National Assembly approved the extension of special measures late last year, although the focus of attacks and military operations have largely shifted to remote, rural areas of Borno near the border with Cameroon.

chris365: But some situations require that we do. Take for instance in Liberia and SL, what would have happened if we hadn't gone in while waiting for UN?

Look at how we waited for Mali. Imagine if France didn't intervene independently when they did.

When it concerns your national interest and security, you don't have to wait for UN pocket money before taking actions.

SA touts itself as a leader on the continent and should therefor understand the cost. I don't think Nigeria made any mistake in funding those missions.

It is such leadership qualities that has continued to place us higher than SA on the continent. No matter how developed there are than us.

Look at the status Kenya achieved after they intervened in Somalia before joining the AMISOM. Bros, he dey important.

Just look at how SA sissied out of CAR and chose to play back seat in DRC. Who would respect such military?
I don't disagree with you in an urgent situation to go it alone knowing there will be no reinbursements (we know that now). What i am against is a routine UN mission (like Sudan), which I think should lie solely with the UN unless the situation is dire.

What else do you expect from the SANDF? cheesy
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 3:33pm On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: So, why is it a problem if we let UN to take reaponsibility of every cost that we incur. Why is it a problem if we SA do so? Why is it a problem when we do it?
Have I told you it is a problem? I think the UN should incur the costs if it is their operation because Nigeria has learnt lessons from the past and understand no one will reimburse you if you bear the costs upfront.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 3:02pm On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: So, why didn't your military exercise their own discretion just like we did other than waiting for UN.
Because it was a UN mission and their responsibility. We have airlfted troops and equipment to missions in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali etc and even been evacuating Nigerians from CAR with a C-130 and chartered flights, so airlifting in not a problem.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1:
Fighter Pilot: Thanks, you have now answered it. If you are a captain and you are promoted to the rank of Major, L.t colonel or even Colonel, there is money involved which you will have to be paid for assuming a new higher rank. Budget=money. SANDF pay very good salaries to avoid exodus that you are experiencing in Nigeria.
It is a shame you can't get your head round anything. There is no problem paying salaries as money is not a problem or bone of contention.

People only leave or are compulsorily retired when they reach the retirement age or fail their promotion exams and become too old for the post they hold if they fail to make any progress as required. It is enshrined in military law. They are not allowed to sit on fat bottoms doing nothing as in SANDF. They can take on contracts or act as advisers or do what they want when they leave, but not good enough to remain in the army.

An exodus is when people flee somewhere, i.e. SANDF.

Only the officers with specialist skills are kept on longer after retirement age.

It doesn't affect military operations as there are plenty of officers who have merited the promotion waiting to progress.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 1:17pm On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: Don't bring blogs which have been written from people's personal point of view. All pilots who are retiring from full-time military service because of salary related problems are free to pursue other opportunities at their own accord. Many of them still regard military with the highest esteem, thus have joined our reserve forces which is still part of SANDF.

Nigeria also cannot sustain their peace keeping missions without the help of UN. Many of them were left stranded in Sudan where even two of their soldiers died because of depression, while SA could not wait for UN to provide transport, but charted their own plane home.
Stop lying, it is well documented about the exodus of SANDF personnel due to your policies of positive discrimination.

It has already been covered in the past re peacekeepers in Sudan who were the responsibility of the UN and not the Nigerian Military. The UN eventually brought them home. It was their mistake.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:55am On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: My friend, use your head. Do you by any chance want to tell me that you can be promoted to the rank of a colonel from captain in Nigeria and still get the salary of a captain, that's madness.

No wonder there is such a biggest exodus of combatants in your military.
No, you will be promoted from a Captain to a Major and paid as a Major. It is all budgeted for. There has never been a problem with officers being paid their salaries (I am not talking about deployment expenses etc, which is always open to abuse).

I think you will find the big exodus is from SANDF not Nigerian Armed Forces. In fact, you have people desperate to join cool
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:21am On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: Promotions have a lot to do with finance my friend. If you are promoted to a rank of captain you will have to earn more than what you have been earning.

You cannot just keep on promoting if you do not have enough money to do that. I have to admit that SA is also sometimes facing challenge in that respect.
No my friend, it has nothing to do with it in the Nigerian military, it is purely on merit and positions available, hence the compulsory retirements to move people along.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:10am On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: My friend we are dealing with subjects that media cannot even reach, but only intelligence sources. Nigeria does not use routine policy of promoting officers due to financial constraints.
Man, you are really limited in your knowledge of military promotions. A mass promotion just took place between the three services and has nothing to do with finances. If you don't pass your exams at each level, you don't get promoted and will be retired once you exceed a certain age in a rank.

Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 11:01am On Jan 09, 2014
Fighter Pilot: Yet, the biggest challenge facing Nigerian military from swelling in numbers is lack of opportunities and promotions.
That is a silly statement as that is why there have been promotions etc to cater for the new battalions, Brigades being created, so what you have said doesn't make sense.

Officers that have reached retirement age are retired, unless they have specialist skills, so there is no log jam.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by rka1: 10:58am On Jan 09, 2014

Quote where anybody said 150,00 has been reached? That is the aim, hence the establishment of the 7th Division in the NE, another one being set up in the South South region (amphibious division) and there are rumours that will be followed by possible new armoured division.

It won't take very long as they are churning out 9,000 troops a time.

Thiza: Increased levels of fighting in South Sudan have apparently led to the SA Army being asked to send a mounted infantry battalion to the continent’s newest state in an effort to restore order.

At the same time the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said more than 23 000 South Sudanese have fled to Uganda.

Fighting continues between government forces and rebels despite ceasefire talks being underway and the volatile situation in South Sudan is on the agenda of an AU meeting currently underway in Addis Ababa.

Afrikaans daily Beeld reported Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as saying it would be difficult for the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) to make 1 000 soldiers available for deployment to South Sudan. She said the South African military could offer assistance but did not specify what form it would take.

SANDF head of corporate communications Siphiwe Dlamini told the paper South Africans were already part of the UN mission in Darfur adding the AU meeting would have to take decisions on how to further the peace process in the East African country.
